Chris Towne, Director of the Towne Group of Companies has been elected as the new chairman of the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA). He replaces Len Latham of Bridon International, who stands down after two years, as is customary with the LEEA.

Established in 1944, the LEEA has over 300 member companies worldwide and campaigns vigorously for higher standards of safety within the lifting industry. In addition to providing members with training and expert technical advice, the association works closely with organisations such as the Health and Safety Executive in the preparation of regulations and British, European and International standards. Member companies include those involved in the manufacture, hire, repair, refurbishment and use of lifting equipment; all are responsible for the test, examination or verification of lifting equipment. Applicants are subject to an initial technical audit before full membership is granted, and then to a continuing programme of assessments.

Chris Towne’s appointment was announced at the LEEA’s AGM, held in Chester on November 20th. Commenting on his new role, he said: “I am delighted to lead the team in fully developing LEEA as the international trade association committed to enhancing the skills and training of all those involved in the lifting industry…….”

After starting his career in the Merchant Navy, Chris Towne joined the family businesses of C. E.A. Towne (Ship Riggers) Limited and Fleetwood Trawler Supply Limited in 1976. He developed the lifting equipment manufacturing and supply side of the Towne Group throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and was appointed to the LEEA board in 2004. He studied at Hull University between 2003 and 2007 and holds a Nebosh Safety Diploma and a University Degree in Safety.

Plus, too much vitamin A -- over 5,000 International Units (IU) daily -- can increase a person's chances for broken hips and liver problems. In addition to supplements, vitamin A is also found in topical acne and anti-wrinkle treatments.

2. Vitamin C
Oral vitamin C minimizes damage from free radicals and UV exposure, which can result in wrinkles and skin cancer. While many skin creams and topical treatments contain vitamin C, there is a much higher concentration of vitamin C in a supplement. Also, vitamin C breaks down once it hits the air.

3. Vitamin E

Linda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN, FAAN, who, with former US secretary of health and human services, Donna Shalala, co-chaired the committee that researched and issued the IOM report, will deliver the keynote speech. Her presentation, at 9:00 am on Friday, January 7, Leading the Way: Who Will Answer the Call?, will be followed by a conversation on the theme of the conference with NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN.

Dr. Malone will take the podium twice again later that day, first at 1:15 pm in a plenary session entitled Leading with Passion, and then at 3:15 to sum up with Building Consensus: What Are the Top 10 Issues that Emerged Today?

In concurrent sessions throughout the two-day gathering, participants will examine in-depth issues related to organizational systems; leadership processes; the politics of workplace environments; academic-practice partnerships; and the role of public policy in advancing leadership. They will hear more from national experts about the impact of the RWJF-IOM report, as they focus on strategic planning, diversity, and inclusion, and developing personal career plans to advance in organizational leadership.

Leading artificial turf maker FieldTurf pointed to the much anticipated research from the EPA out today on synthetic turf as further evidence of the safety of synthetic turf fields and playgrounds.

The EPA’s ‘Scoping-Level Field Monitoring Study of Synthetic Turf Fields and Playgrounds’ was conducted to….
 Gain experience conducting multi-route field monitoring of recreational surfaces that contain tire crumb by evaluating readily available methods for measuring environmental concentrations of tire crumb constituents; and

 Generate limited field monitoring data that will be used by EPA to help the Agency determine possible next steps to address questions from the public regarding the safety of tire crumb infill in recreational fields.

With regard to the study goals, FieldTurf executives were both pleased with the results of the testing and for that matter the validation of numerous existing testing methods. The latter of which should result in more appropriate methods of testing for others that will choose to do their own evaluations in the future.
