Over the last number of years Mimetic Productions’ owner Gavin Booth has been showing the world that when it comes to production there is no better place than Windsor Ontario. With production work being completed for some of the largest entertainers in the industry and two independent films currently in post-production Gavin has now announced that Windsor is the perfect place to shoot “A Most Useless Place” the company’s third film.
A Most Useless Place is the poignant and heartbreaking story of 18 year old Casey Mills. A frail, detached, and mysterious teenager, Casey takes the viewer from the very brink of moral revulsion, to the ultimate core of human empathy. With nothing to lose but her only companion, a worn-down, battered Teddy Bear, Casey steals, lies, and threatens. She is often cruel, but her tears reveal sorrow. She is often sympathetic, but her smile hides rage. Piece by piece, scene by scene, the tangled web of her journey is unwoven. Through her eyes, she reveals her despair, her hopelessness, and finally…her Most Useless Place.
The story itself is unique but so is the way it is being told and shot. The movie which begins production on July 12 2006 is being filmed by Gavin Booth as a one man film crew, a formidable challenge that Booth is willing to take on.
“I’ve been saying for several years that digital film making is at a point where one person with a camera and a computer has the same abilities as a Hollywood studio," says Booth. “I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to put my money where my mouth is on this idea.”
The story itself is also unique as it is revealed to the viewers with absolutely no sound. Haunting images and carefully chosen music will draw in the viewers. The story line is a somber one.
“The battle with depression is something that many teens face but are afraid to speak about,” Booth explains. “That idea is what partly inspired the silent film approach. It is also one of the reasons we will be launching an awareness campaign with the Windsor-Essex County Canadian Mental Health Association to bring attention to an issue that many feel uncomfortable discussing.”
Casey will be played by Boston Massachusetts native Tanya Bettencourt who has just recently appeared in the Santana and Steven Tyler music video “Just Feel Better.”
Shooting of the movie will be done over a ten day period around Windsor and Essex County. Anyone interested in participating in the film as an extra is encouraged to contact Mimetic’s production office by calling 519-254-2172 for further details.
