This October, only a short distance apart, like-minded individuals and groups devoted to finding sustainable solutions to the global food crisis were meeting at two related venues in Europe. Italy hosted another of its annual Terra Madre gatherings this month, which was inaugurated with written addresses from the Prince of Wales and the Secretary of the United Nations, General Ban Ki-moon. Slow Food and the Terra Madre Foundation were the organizers of this third world meeting of food communities. Turkey was the site of another gathering of people thoughtful about the future of the planet, about nature and intelligent food-production as opposed to the destructive practices motivated by "greed and ignorance," as one participant called it. The latter was promoted under the name Ringing Cedars Readers' Conference (http://www. ringingcedarsofrussia. org/conference).

While the Terra Madre gathering was inspired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (with his message that "finding long-term solutions to the world food crisis was one of the priorities of the United Nations", and that he welcomed "initiatives which contribute to such solutions"), the Ringing Cedars Conference, at another coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Turkey, called themselves the "Uniting Nations", in appreciation of the numerous countries represented at the meeting, and their mutual, global concerns for the Earth and its inhabitants.

These developments are commonly undertaken as part of an eco-village and celebrate life and freedom from the unnatural pressures and stresses of modern life, while enjoying the comforts and benefits of helpful technologies. Eco-villages (http://www. ringingcedarsofrussia. org/theearth/ringing-cedars-newspaper-interview-vladimir-megre-part2-2008-oct. html#n2) are oftentimes found close to large cities, so people who still like to travel to their work can live in loving and nurturing environments while continuing their "city-commitments", which might even include a small indoor food-garden in a city-apartment.

Over 300 Kin's Domain eco-villages have been developed or are in various stages of development, all inspired by Megre's own inspiration - namely a young, beautiful recluse woman who has lived her entire life by herself in the harsh environment of the Siberian Taiga - Anastasia.

Anastasia is the title of the first book in the Ringing Cedars of Russia series and the name under which over eleven million readers discuss her theories affectionately. She shared her deep wisdom with him for three days, and permanently changed his life. Megre was a successful and affluent business-man at the time. In an amazing synchronicity, Prince Charles' inspirational statement for the Italian gathering emphasized that the solution to the current global food crisis, and its ensuing problems, rested largely with what he called "truly sustainable" farming. He also emphasized how crucial it was for the voices of the participants to be heard in the global debates concerning these issues. As quoted from the transcript of his message, he was "enormously encouraged that so many people are today recognizing the benefits of working with nature and harnessing positive forces through healthy soil, healthy crops and healthy animals in order to provide healthy food." And in addressing the sustainable farming community, he expressed "nothing but my greatest admiration for all you stand for." He called sustainable farmers "guarantors of our long-term food security, based upon your dedicated care of the natural environment."

Dr. Regina Jensen, a Santa Barbara psychotherapist, attended the Turkey conference. She is an independent writer and editor of the new Space of Love Magazine (https://www. ringingcedarsofrussia. org/store. php? id=sol01), with publisher and co-editor Yuri Smirnov. The magazine, in print and online, is one of many international publications supporting the Ringing Cedars movement. Dr. Jensen attended the gathering to conduct interviews with Anastasia author, Vladimir Megre. The center of her interest with this interview, she said, was the ideas offered by this "inspiring movement," namely Anastasia's and Megre's ability to not only inspire, but inspire-to-action so many thousands of people world-wide.

"Most of us know what we should do, or not do, to help save this planet from the thoughtless destruction we have wrought upon it," said Jensen. Dr. Jensen does not make such claims lightly. For some time now, the focal point of her concerns continue to lead her in the direction of sustainability. In that quest, she recently visited Sepp Holzer's International Permaculture center in Austria, Krameterhof, where she found confirmation of the Ringing Cedars information. The Permaculture Center has gained world-renown for its ability to thrive in a very inhospitable climate, with luscious and unusual crops grown on heretofore barren soil. Sepp Holzer, (the owner and nature-genius who has proven that anyone can build a self-sustaining paradise and feed his family, regardless of where they live) besides running the center, now teaches and consults globally.

Notably, Megre often discusses the energies of the plant-kingdom, which, he feels, have been tragically ignored, abused and underestimated. In his books, Anastasia apparently also describes a method with which the plant-kingdom can be engaged to produce food which develops specifically to help an individual to correct health challenges.

The global vision of finding ways to resolve the food crisis, either through re-developing inexpensive waste-lands, through government programs of leasing or land-trusts, or by simple land purchases is "as brilliant as it is simple," as one follower has described the concept. Historically, the Russian Dacha Gardens, the German Schrebergaerten, and the American Victory Gardens are examples of families having provided wholesome food - and life - for themselves even during times of economic hardship and food crisis by way of food-gardening. In some regions, the government is helping people without the financial means to obtain such dreams. Jensen adds that her own family has enjoyed such a family-plot for 56 years, which is still feeding the family with fruits and vegetables.

The Austrian Krameterhof (though outstanding in its beauty and fabled climate, and created by way of intelligent harvesting of water, use of large rocks for warmth and novel application of grading and use of plantings) is not the only Permaculture center which is inspiring people who fear that the land they have available is too dry or barren. Geoff Lawton of the Australian Permaculture center, in a celebrated effort in Jordan, showed that "you can make a paradise anywhere" when he "greened" the desert in an area where the parched, salinity-stressed ground was so hard, dry and dead that even the locals were laughing at the idea (greeningthedesert. com). Lawton's demonstration of the intelligent use of water-harvesting and what he calls "swales" is yet another seemingly miraculous transformation, which is deeply encouraging.

Almost everyone who’s scheduled for surgery experiences at least a few symptoms of anxiety. But while some stress is normal, patients who experience severe anxiety actually increase their need for sedating drugs and subsequent complications such as severe pain, slower wound healing, and increased risk of infection, adverse drug reactions, cognitive impairment, and longer hospital stays.

According to Los Angeles surgeon Eric Robins, MD, there’s a simple way to reduce these risks by reducing the anxiety that causes them. His prescription is EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), a simple do-it-yourself procedure that combines gentle fingertip tapping on key acupuncture points with focused thought.

“Stress is a real problem in health and healing,” says Dr. Robins. “but it doesn’t just complicate surgery, it actually contributes to disease. Most of the problems that send people to surgeons are themselves linked to stress, anxiety, or past traumas. I like EFT because it’s easy to demonstrate, easy to learn, works fast, and addresses an illness’s underlying factors. In some cases, it works so well that we have to cancel the operation.”

One of Dr. Robins’ patients was scheduled for surgery because she wasn’t able to void urine after a knee replacement. During her pre-op exam, Dr. Robins wondered whether emotional factors might be interfering with the function of her bladder.

She answered that stress from her husband’s recent illness might be a factor. “Even though we were talking in a busy medical clinic with many distractions,” says Dr. Robins, “I taught her EFT and guided her through 10 minutes of tapping. After we filled the patient’s bladder with water and removed her catheter, she voided just fine. Five days later she was still doing well, making the surgery unnecessary. Her symptoms never returned.”

When surgery is needed, he says, EFT can reduce or eliminate pre-op nerves, reduce the patient’s need for anesthetics, speed recovery, and improve the procedure’s outcome.

Reducing a patient’s need for sedating drugs is important not only to those with drug sensitivities but to America’s aging population. According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, over half of patients age 60 and older experience confusion and other symptoms of cognitive impairment when discharged after surgery, and three months later, over a third continue to be adversely affected. Patients undergoing heart surgery, joint replacement, or fracture repair are at greatest risk of anesthesia-related mental decline.

A former competitive speed skater, Seal attributes rebounding to his complete recovery from a debilitating and painful back injury.

"I felt I was rapidly declining into old age," Seal said. "Rebounding gave back my health and vitality, improved my mental well-being and helped me get back into shape."

Rebounding's health benefits are also applauded by Seal's clients and people recovering from illness.

Arnold Manalang of Martinez, CA, had heart bypass surgery a year ago. He says gently bouncing on his rebounder for a few minutes a day has helped him recover from his surgery.

And Denise Schwartz of Solana, CA, who has been rebounding for about four months, attributes rebounding to reducing the size of a lipoma (fatty tissue) on her back.

"I haven't changed a thing in my diet so I know it's from the rebounding I do everyday," she said.

Although trampolines are often linked to injuries, especially in children, rebounders are small -- around 40 inches in diameter and only ten inches off the ground -- so injuries are less likely.

But Seal says to be beware of purchasing cheap rebounder trampolines sold at discount stores.

"The construction of the rebounder is very important," he said. "A broken spring or a faulty hinge can lead to injuries."

Seal, who says he's personally tested and reviewed all rebounder brands, only recommends two: Needak and Dave Hall. The popular Urban Rebounder failed to meet Seal's standards for safety and performance.

Seal recommends that people who are just starting out purchase a rebounder with a stabilizing bar to help with balance and coordination.

"Rebounding offers so much to so many people," Seal said. "It's fun, but more importantly, it works."

So how to you get active when youÂ’re retired? You find an activity or hobby that you enjoy and seek out the opportunities that are in your area, related to that activity. One organization that you may find attractive is the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Volunteers. From the first settlers, to those who sought out better lives by following Horace Greeley’s words, “Go West young man”, and this nation has been founded on the principles of volunteerism.

Our continental army was volunteers, as were man of our Civil War combatants, on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. During the 60Â’s, volunteerism was alive and well, domestically and abroad. Voter registration drives and the Peace Corps come to mind.

Today, the opportunities abound for those who are retired and donÂ’t want to sit home searching for activities to consume their time. An active mind is a healthy mind, and a healthy mind makes a happier person.

According to the National Academy on an Aging Society analysis of data from the 1992 Health and Retirement Study, 58% of the people surveyed who were happy with their retirement were not depressed. Another study, the National Academy on an Aging Society analysis of data from the 1992 Health and Retirement Study showed that participation in social activities were a keystone to keeping oneÂ’s self out of depression.

So how to you get active when youÂ’re retired? You find an activity or hobby that you enjoy and seek out the opportunities that are in your area, related to that activity. One organization that you may find attractive is the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary is composed of approximately 38,000 men and women from all walks of life that assist the United States Coast Guard in almost every single aspect of the countries oldest military service. The only two areas we, as uniformed, volunteer civilians can not get involved in, is military action and direct law enforcement activities.

ThatÂ’s a lot of ground that you can get involved in. From serving on Coast Guard Cutters, Helicopters and Jets, to working in Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, Auxiliarists, if qualified and properly trained can do it all.

Here are some examples of some hobbies and their counterpart in the United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Remember, you would be volunteering in the Auxiliary, youÂ’d be a civilian, youÂ’d set your own hours and places youÂ’d want to work, in conjunction with the needs of the Coast Guard.

• Amateur Radio (Ham) – the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard needs trained communicators. On a daily basis, the Coast Guard does and always could use more qualified Watchstanders – these are the people you talk with when you call the Coast Guard on the radio for emergencies and information. The Auxiliary also provides a secondary emergency radio network, as well as a place for social gathering in our off-time.

• Boating – The Auxiliary has a large boat crew program. You see them on the waters, doing safety patrols and Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) patrols. All members who enter the boat crew program must undergo a significant amount of training, but the skills learned are worth it.

Members also have the opportunity to apply for, and train to work on Coast Guard Cutters and patrol boats of all sizes.

• Conservation – The USCG is the primary steward of our oceans. They enforce both fisheries laws as well as environmental laws on our navigable waters. Auxiliarists work hand in hand with their Coast Guard counterparts in every level, except the law enforcement aspect of the large environmental protection aspect fo the Coast Guard Mission.

• Cooking – The Coast Guard is always looking for a few good chefs! In one of our Districts we have even created an Auxiliary Chef School to train and qualify Auxiliarists as Coast Guard Chefs. These people work at Coast Guard Stations throughout the country giving our men and women gustatory pleasure. In the recent Republican National Convention, Auxiliary ChefÂ’s worked round the clock feeding the large number of Active Duty, Reserve and Auxiliary Coast Guard members working at keeping New York and their guests, which included the President and Vice-President safe from water-borne threats.

• Education – The Auxiliary is the primary facilitator of the Coast GuardÂ’s Recreational Boating Safety mission. To this end, Auxiliarists (who have qualified as instructors) teach a myriad of boating safety and navigation courses to hundreds of thousands of students each year.

• Marine Safety – The Coast Guard and Auxiliary spend countless hours protecting our maritime domain. The Auxiliary assists the Coast Guard as acting as their eyes and ears, by conducting Maritime Domain Awareness patrols. Who else knows better then those who live and work in and around our navigable rivers and ports as to what is normal and what is abnormal. The Water Watch program (http://www. cgauxed. org/waterway/ (http://www. cgauxed. org/waterway/) is a major program in the effort to keep our country safe.

• Training – The Auxiliary provides training not only to the public (under our education mission) but to both the Auxiliary itself and the Coast Guard. As someone who has worked their whole life in a particular job function, industry or profession, you have skills that have been honed and sharpened. These skills should not be let to atrophy. You can, and the Coast Guard can use, many of the skills you have to offer.

Almost all the examples required some type of training. And for the greater portion of these training programs, Auxiliarists are the people training Auxiliarists. Some training is given by Auxiliarists on areas that provide an value added benefit to the Coast Guard. An example of this type of training would be Ham Radio classes offered in some areas of the country.

So, youÂ’ve retired. YouÂ’ve worked hard and now you are faced with some hard choices. You can sit at home, and loose touch with the active life you once led or you can make that leap and walk to a computer or a phone book and seek out the contact person at an agency who is looking for volunteers; someone just like you, to assist in their particular mission.
