Florida author Kay Day says both patients and doctors need to learn how to talk to one another. Doing so increases chances for success in both healing and cost-savings.

As Florida author Kay Day wrote the book Killing Earl (Ocean Publishing, June, 2005), she realized that communication between patient and physician can be a challenge for both. She learned that lack of communications can be a barrier to a timely diagnosis and can also increase treatment costs.

“Our daughter Becky was 12 years old,” says Day. “No one knew what was wrong with her. I believe it took longer to figure it out and the costs were higher because of communications.”

The author watched her daughter try to talk to the doctor, and realized that both of them had a problem. “The doctor would fire questions at her and Becky would just stumble over the answers,” said Day. “When I’d pick up her records later, I’d see information that hadn’t been fully explained. Sometimes I’d realize the test she’d just undergone didn’t help.”

Day says the Internet was a valuable tool. “A pre-teen isn’t exactly equipped to deal with all aspects of testing, imaging, and examinations—decisions about what to agree to,” she says. “So a parent or guardian has to be informed.”

“You’d be amazed at what you learn when you are politely assertive and ask questions,” says the author. “And clear information can often make the patient more comfortable. I learned to ask questions of every member of the healthcare team. I learned to speak to the doctors and nurses with an information-based approach. Just as important is talking to your pharmacist--this professional is often overlooked by the patient as a resource. I learned it’s okay to ask about risks from medications. Those are a few reasons our daughter was cured.”

Day says that for several years, groups such as the American College of Physicians have emphasized talking to patients and improving skills to that end. “I don’t think they can deliver that message enough,” she says, “regardless of the patient’s age.”

Day wrote Killing Earl because her daughter asked her to. “Earl” was the name Becky used to refer to her pain. “I hope nobody has to deal with an Earl,” Becky says.

3. Practice the 3-minute rule. Having hydrated skin is key to having healthy skin. But people may not be getting the full benefits with their hydrator. Be sure to moisturize within three minutes of washing, showering or bathing – when skin is damp – because this helps to lock in moisture. In fact, it’s a common misconception that moisturizers hydrate the skin. To the contrary, moisturizers lock in skin’s own moisture, notes the American Academy of Dermatology. So hydrating skin when it’s dry is largely unhelpful.

Voting to extend the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief is vital to keep from losing pace in the fight against HIV and AIDS in hard-hit nations, a World Vision advocate told U. S. senators at a hearing today.

The international Christian humanitarian agency World Vision strongly supports reauthorization of the United States Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Act of 2003. The law, which expires in Sept. 2008, funded the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) with a total commitment of more than $15 billion for AIDS prevention, treatment and care. President George W. Bush is asking Congress to reauthorize PEPFAR and double that funding for the next five years.

“Congress must act on this legislation quickly to ensure continuation of the live-saving global AIDS programs it funds,” Princess Zulu, a Zambian AIDS educator and advocate with World Vision, told a hearing of the Senate Health, Education Labor and Pensions Committee today. “We also support the continued requirement that at least 10 percent of all resources in this Act are directed to the care of orphans and vulnerable children.”

AIDS has already orphaned 15 million children worldwide.

If signed into law, the increase would fully fund the bilateral AIDS programs administered by the U. S. State Department in 15 of the world’s most-affected countries.

World Vision, a Christian relief and development organization operating in nearly 100 countries, specializes in child-focused, community-based programs to alleviate the root causes of poverty and injustice. The agency began its work to stem the impact of HIV and AIDS two decades ago in Rakai, Uganda, the pandemic’s epicenter. World Vision now has AIDS prevention and care work in 60 countries.

Los Angeles, CA., October 29, 2002: Dr. Kosta Mumcuoglu, a parasitologist at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem and a world renowned expert in the field of head lice study, has published an article about the effectiveness of a natural head lice remedy. The article, published in the October issue of the English-language Journal of the Israel Medical Association, compared the results with a chemical spray containing Malathion.

Mumcuoglu, who has tested 15,000 Israeli children for head lice over the past 15 years, found that the natural remedy, sold in the U. S. as HairClean 1-2-3 Lice Kit, was more effective than the chemical preparation. (website: www. quantumhealth. com)

Mumcuoglu and colleagues from the Jerusalem District Health Office and the Hadassah-University Hospital dermatology department studied 940 children aged six to 14 from six Jerusalem schools. Of these, 21 percent had lice and eggs, and 17% had only nits. Of the 119 children treated, half were given the natural remedy and the rest the chemical spray - three times during a 15-day period. Girls were much more likely to be infested with lice than boys, and younger children aged six to nine more than teenagers.

The natural remedy is composed of coconut oil, anise oil and ylang ylang oil killed lice and nits on 92.3% of the children. The chemical spray's active ingredients are permethrin and Malathion. The spray was effective on 92.2%.

The chemicalÂ’s effectiveness may be attributed to the ingredient Malathion, which is available by prescription only. Permethrin, the other chemical ingredient, has, in many cases, been shown to fail due to lice resistance. Permethrin is found in most drug store head lice products.

Several trials conducted by Professor Terri Meinking of the University Of Miami Medical School preceeded the Israeli study, showing that HairClean 1-2-3 was more effective than products containing permethrin and pyrethrum.

New generations of head lice are becoming resistant to preparations that were previously effective. Thus parents, Mumcuoglu concludes, will welcome the news that the natural remedy can kill lice and nits as well as the chemical preparations and causes no serious side effects.
