Toxic Beauty: Salon Safety Tips for a Healthy Summer

Toxic Beauty: Salon Safety Tips for a Healthy Summer

Award-winning Le Jardin Day Spa offers tips to prevent a luxury experience from turning in to an infectious nightmare.

Collegeville, PA (PRWEB) July 7, 2008

Le Jardin Day Spa and Salon (www. spalejardin. com), the most award-winning and credentialed Spa in the Philadelphia-area, today announced tips for looking your best while staying safe at any salon this summer. LeJardin, voted Top Day Spa in Montgomery County four years in a row, recognizes that summer is the height of pedicure and Spa season, and that women around the country should be vigilant when it comes to pampering themselves this summer.

"Too often, women neglect safety when it comes to pampering," said Stephen Fox, Owner of Le Jardin Day Spa and Salon. "Although there are thousands of reputable and safe salons across the country, we hope that the following information will arm women with the knowledge to stay beautiful and safe this summer," he continued.

1. Your Nose Knows - You should avoid salons where you notice strong odors. Salons that practice proper safety procedures should provide proper ventilation and maintain a near odorless environment in all areas. Inappropriate exposure to certain salon chemicals can lead to headaches, respiratory irritation, skin problems and more.

2. Writing on the 'Bathroom' Wall - Like with restaurants, you'll want to visit the bathroom of any salon you visit. The establishment's restroom-cleanliness will offer a quick glimpse at their overall hygiene.

3. Lethal Weapon - Any instrument that is used as part of a Spa service, from nail files to hair trimmers, should be properly disinfected after each use, not once at the end of the day.

4. Disinfect to Protect - Technicians are required to clean both their and hands and their clients hands (and feet) prior to any nail service or massage. Be sure you're not an exception. In addition, salon instruments are not the only thing that may be carrying germs or harmful bacteria; pedicure tub, manicure station and massage table surfaces all must be sanitized after each guest. This includes nail files, pumice stones, toe separators and more.

5. Help Your Self - Le Jardin suggests that guests avoid shaving their legs immediately prior to any pedicure, or facial waxing prior to any facial. This will decrease any self-inflicted cuts, nicks or blemishes which could result in an infection. Meanwhile, don't have your cuticles trimmed too aggressively, this could cause unnecessary bleeding.

6. You Get What You Pay For - The price of your service does not indicate that you'll receive a higher quality or safer experience. Do your homework.

7. Do Ask, Do Tell - Don't hesitate to ask for a technician's license. All salons should have their Health & Safety Certificate displayed and should have the licenses of their technicians readily available.

8. Toxic Beauty - Keep in mind that some products are toxic if swallowed. Le Jardin suggests that you wash your hands before eating or touching your eyes or nose following a salon treatment. Also, do a patch test if you suspect that you might be allergic to a lotion or chemical.

9. Just Say No -- Technicians should not offer service to a guest if they suspect the guest might have a cut or infection. Similarly, if a technician is responsible for accidentally cutting or burning a guest by filing too close to the skin, cutting a nail too low or by the high temperature of water or wax, a guest should immediately halt their service and disinfect their injury.

10. Au Natural - Many all-natural and organic products are available on the market today, thus many salons are offering their guests the opportunity to reduce their carbon imprint on the environment. Le Jardin offers various organic shampoos, hair colors, lotions, polishes, makeup and waxes. Ask your salon for a list of their 'green' products.

Once considered a luxury, top quality salon services are now main stream. However, like with all medical procedures, there are always risks to any salon treatment. Clients are responsible for their own well-being and should research a salon before making an appointment, just like they would research a doctor or hospital. Le Jardin offers these tips as well as free beauty consultations and complimentary health seminars. Avielle, their premiere line of exclusive cosmetics, launching this summer, completes their wellness package.

Le Jardin strives, seven days a week, to provide the local community with a relaxing and elegant environment from which to receive the highest quality aesthetic services available. They have accomplished this by choosing exceptionally talented, certified professionals to perform state-of-the-art treatments which unify the body, mind and spirit. Premise Corporation and Stryker Medical Announce Strategic Alliance in Collaboration with Microsoft to Release Next Generation Patient Safety Solution

Premise Corporation and Stryker Medical Announce Strategic Alliance in Collaboration with Microsoft to Release Next Generation Patient Safety Solution

Companies to launch iBed™ platform and other software solutions to improve patient flow, caregiver communication and quality of care

Kalamazoo, MI and Farmington, CT (PRWEB) February 26, 2008

Stryker Medical, a division of Stryker Corporation (NYSE: SYK), and Premise Corporation, the leading provider of clinically-focused solutions to optimize patient flow, today announced a strategic partnership to develop and promote communication solutions to support clinical and nursing efficiencies for leading hospitals.

In particular, the companies will draw upon their core competencies - for Premise, optimizing patient flow via workflow automation and hospital-wide communication; and for Stryker, providing intelligent beds to help ensure patient safety and high quality care both at the bedside and beyond. Collaborating with the Microsoft Corp. and working with the Microsoft technology platform, Stryker and Premise will streamline the communication process of patient information through Stryker's Connected Hospital® strategy that provides multiple levels of connectivity: 1) More informed care at the bedside; 2) Optimized communication to the nurse station; 3) Connecting caregivers throughout the hospital.

"Microsoft's mission is to improve health around the world. We recognize that patient safety solutions are a critical industry need," said Chris Sullivan, U. S. health industry solutions director, Microsoft Corp. "Built on Microsoft's familiar, easy-to-use and widely supported software platform, Premise and Stryker's iBed Awareness Dashboard solution takes patient safety to the next level, and we're pleased to work with such innovative companies."

In January 2007, Stryker Medical launched its exclusive iBed platform. As an integrated or standalone solution, Stryker iBed and Premise Care Management will provide clinicians with the highest level of knowledge, communication and workflow automation around the patient care process at the bedside and beyond. iBed will further enhance clinical knowledge, patient safety, communication and decision-making -- unlocking the abundance of bed - and patient-centric data without the burdensome task of data entry. Today, there's no practical way to conveniently access this useful and rich data. By making this data both available and contextual to care delivery activities, iBed will help improve the timeliness and quality of care while providing a more informed and less chaotic caregiver environment.

The Stryker iBed Dashboard further extends the recently announced Premise Care Management Solution that is being developed collaboratively with Microsoft Corp.'s MS-ISV (Independent Software Vendors) Group. Premise was a 2007 winner of the MS-HUG Innovation Award and is currently a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. This relationship provides Premise and Stryker access to Microsoft's latest technology innovations, development and architecture expertise, as well as use of Microsoft Technology Centers.

"Premise's mission has always been to help hospitals achieve optimal patient flow, which is about much more than patient placement and bed turnover. The Premise-Stryker partnership couples proven technology with flexible options for improving flow, increasing patient safety and creating a more efficient care environment both at the bedside and hospital-wide," states Premise Chairman and CEO, Eric Rosow. "As our clients use the integrated iBed platform, integrate with Real Time Location Systems, or use the Premise Patient Flow Platform in a myriad of other ways to meet their patient flow objectives, we're pleased to provide customized solutions that create a higher quality, more efficient care environment that benefits both clinicians and patients."

In addition to the iBed Platform, the partnership will also yield other solutions to improve communication, quality of care and patient flow. Utilizing Stryker's expertise in advanced smart bed technology, combined with Premise's proficiency in optimizing workflow and Microsoft's knowledge of integrating software solutions, the companies aim to design an end-to-end solution that leverages disparate information to help improve caregiver efficiency and patient outcomes.

Congresswoman Cynthia Mckinney Sponsors H. R. 4282, The Health Freedom Protection Act

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-4th, Georgia), joins 14 members of Congress, 89 dietary supplement companies, public interest groups and supplement distributors in supporting H. R. 4282, The Health Freedom Protection Act.

WASHINGTON DC (PRWEB) December 24, 2005

Today, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-4th, Georgia), joined 14 members of Congress, 89 dietary supplement companies, public interest groups and supplement distributors in supporting H. R. 4282, The Health Freedom Protection Act. The Congresswoman supports public access to affordable and quality health care and public access to truthful information on the role of nutrients in treating disease.

In becoming a sponsor of H. R. 4282, McKinney is advocating a change in the law to ensure that consumers have access to truthful nutrient-disease treatment information in the marketplace. That change will enable consumers to obtain full information at the point of sale concerning inexpensive, safe and effective nutrients such as fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) to reduce the risk of sudden death heart attack; calcium to reduce the risk of bone fractures; and glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to treat osteoarthritis. The FDA has in place an absolute ban on the making of nutrient-disease treatment claims. The Health Freedom Protection Act would change this by giving Americans access to information concerning how commonly consumed foods and dietary supplements can benefit them.

"Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is taking a leadership role in the fight to protect Americans' right to receive truthful information about the role of nutrients in fighting disease. Her actions and those of the 14 other congressional sponsors of the bill hold out the promise of greater health and longevity for all Americans," stated Attorney Jonathan Emord (www. emord. com), Author of H. R. 4282.

About Congresswoman Cynthia Mckinney

In just nine years, Cynthia Ann McKinney, Georgia's first African-American Congresswoman and the only woman serving in the state's congressional delegation, has emerged as an internationally renowned advocate for voting rights, human rights and the strengthening of business ties between Africa and the United States. She is known as a passionate, intelligent, charismatic and effective member of the House of Representatives. Born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 17, 1955, Cynthia currently lives in south DeKalb County. She earned a B. A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California in 1978 and is currently working to complete her dissertation in international relations at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

About The Health Freedom Protection Act

The Health Freedom Protection Act will prevent the FDA from censoring Americans' right to know about truthful, health-enhancing benefits of foods and dietary ingredients. Congressmen Ron Paul, Walter Jones, John Duncan, Peter DeFazio, Roscoe Bartlett, Dan Burton, Jeff Miller, and Rob Bishop introduced the Health Freedom Protection Act (H. R. 4282) on Wednesday, November 9th, 2005. Since November 9, the following additional members of Congress have become sponsors: Lynn Woolsey, Jo Ann S. Davis, C. L. Butch Otter, Chris Cannon, Dana Rohrabacher and Thomas G. Tancredo. For more information, visit www. StopFDACensorship. org.

Beauty News: Creating Sandal-Ready Feet for Summer

Beauty News: Creating Sandal-Ready Feet for Summer

Leading Dermatologist Dr. Joshua Fox on Removing Unsightly, Painful Corns and Calluses

Stamford, CT (PRWEB) June 27, 2010

Sarah Brown, wife of U. K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, made headlines recently when she removed her shoes at a Hindu temple, displaying the corns and calluses on her feet. She joined celebrities including Katie Holmes, Amanda Bynes and Rihanna, who are known for having less-than-perfect-feet.

In fact, nearly 10 percent of American women and five percent of the population as a whole suffer from unsightly, often painful corns and calluses that make their feet best suited for boots and other winter shoe styles. But according to dermatologist Dr. Joshua Fox, “by taking care of these problems now, woman and men can enjoy the summer in sandals or their bare feet.”

“Corns and calluses are caused by friction and pressure on the feet, either from wearing shoes that don’t fit properly or from conditions such as arthritis, trauma, bunions or various deformities,” says Dr. Fox, founder of Advanced Dermatology and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology.

“While most corns and calluses are unsightly, only some cause pain. If you are in good health, you don’t have to see a professional for corns and calluses unless they hurt or bother your walking. But, if you don’t like the way your feet look, if you are having pain or if you have certain medical conditions including diabetes, poor circulation or numbness in the feet, it’s important that you see a doctor or podiatrist who can evaluate the problem and help you remove the corns and calluses.”

According to Harry Baldinger, M. D., an esteemed podiatrist in Monsey, N. Y., “Most people do not get calluses or corns. People do get them when there is extra friction at some point during the gait cycle. Sometimes the cause is the structure of the foot which could be adjusted with devices, biomechanical and padding devices.” “Sometimes, surgical intervention is needed if the foot structure is out of the ‘normal’ range. Usually, this type of surgery is NOT cosmetic in nature but rather to make the foot fit the shoe,” adds Dr. Baldinger.

Dr. Fox explains that the yellow or gray, thick, hardened, dead skin on the feet known as calluses and corns form to protect the skin from pressure, friction and injury. While both calluses and corns are less sensitive to the touch than surrounding skin and may feel bumpy, the two are different. Both calluses and hard corns are hard, dry and thick, while a soft corn looks like an open sore. Corns that are neglected can turn into sores which may become infected. Both corns and calluses are diagnosed during a physical exam; your doctor may want to x-ray the foot if he or she suspects a problem with the underlying bone which can be treated by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon.

“The best way to remove a corn or callus is to prevent it from forming in the first place,” says Dr. Fox, who offers several at-home suggestions to prevent corns and calluses from forming. “Wear shoes that fit well and give your toes plenty of room,” he says. “Wear protective coverings such as felt pads, lambs wool, cotton balls or bandages over the parts of your feet that rub against your shoes. If that doesn’t work and you’ve developed a corn or callus, you can try an at-home treatment,” he adds.

If you start to feel pain, Dr. Fox says, the first thing to do is to remove the pressure or friction that is causing the problem, giving it time to heal. This is done by wearing shoes that fit properly and using protective padding, which can be purchased at a drug store, to cushion the callus or corn. Podiatrists can make a specialized shoe for your foot to remove pressure. “Don’t use liquid corn removers containing salicylic acid,” he says. “This can irritate healthy skin and promote infection. Soaking your feet in warm, soapy water can soften corns and calluses, making it easier to remove the thickened skin.”

Dr. Fox also recommends rubbing corns and calluses with a pumice stone or washcloth during or after bathing to help remove a layer of thickened skin, and following that with moisturizer. “Never cut or shave calluses or corns yourself, as this could cause infection.”

Dr. Baldinger advises, “An evaluation by a professional is a worthwhile investment for the future in any case. Until a patient can get to their doctor (dermatologist/podiatrist is best), a useful over-the-counter product that works to remove the hardened skin and soften the underlying skin is KERASAL’s One-Step Exfoliating and Moisturizing Ointment ™, which is available in most pharmacies or doctor’s offices (KerasalPro Ointment)”.

For stubborn, painful corns and calluses or those that you feel are particularly unsightly, see your podiatrist or dermatologist, who can evaluate the problem and remove the dead skin safely, Dr. Fox says. “It’s important to call your doctor if you cut a corn or callus, which could cause infection; if it oozes pus or clear fluid, both of which mean it is infected; or if you develop a corn or callus and you suffer from diabetes, heart disease or other circulatory problems.” During an office visit, he says, your doctor may trim the thickened skin with a scalpel, apply a patch containing salicylic acid and may recommend applying an antibiotic ointment to reduce the risk of infection. In severe cases, your doctor may recommend surgery to correct the alignment of the bones in your feet that are causing the problem.

Applebee's & PureOFlow San Diego Offer up Purified Water

Applebee's & PureOFlow San Diego Offer up Purified Water

Improved taste in beverages gives Applebee's Las Vegas a leg up over competition

San Diego, CA (Vocus) September 18, 2009

Today PureOFlow of San Diego, a company specializing in commercial and residential water treatment systems, announces that Applebee's Nevada Inc., part of Apple American Group LLC, is now serving its guests beverages made with healthy purified water.

Apple American Group LLC, is the largest Applebee's independent franchise with 190 locations in nine states including California and Nevada and strives to be the premier franchise group in the Applebee's system.

According to John Yanchewski, president of the PureOFlow dealership in San Diego, "Water quality is pretty bad in several areas where Applebee's is located, so I saw an opportunity to help them make their water better. I recommended a PureOFlow reverse osmosis system because it is their best option."

Applebee's represents the largest casual-dining chain with almost 2,000 Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar locations across the US and overseas.

Bill Parobek, Director of Purchasing for Apple American says, "Our focus over the years has been on giving our customers the best dining experience. We are now able to take it to another level by giving them the best tasting beverages made with the healthiest water in town."

The pilot program of a PureOFlow installation at the Applebee's at location has already seen a vast improvement according to the comments from regular diners and the staff who don't have as much maintenance clean up. Prior to the PureOFlow installation, the aggressiveness of the water was causing frequent maintenance issues with the IceMaker Parobek adds, "It was remarkable to see the scale and other elements in the water just get flushed out within minutes of the PureOFlow installation, resulting in crystal clear ice after that."

Applebee's has had a consistent commitment to meeting the needs of each dining guest and has been leading the efforts to provide healthy menu options. By offering beverages made with water that is purified without salts or additives, Applebee's beverages are a great option for those on sodium-restricted diets. The best part is that fountain beverages now taste just like they would from a soda can or soda bottle because the PureOFlow system will provide water to meet a major soda manufacturer's specifications.

In hindsight, this installation seems prescient as the California Assembly passed AB1366 banning the use of water softeners to prevent the expenses incurred to prevent salt pollution from millions of chloride ions dumped into the environment each year.

EX-USF Dean Sets A New And Bold Vision To Transform Women's Healthcare And Clinical Research In Florida

EX-USF Dean Sets A New And Bold Vision To Transform Women's Healthcare And Clinical Research In Florida

Lisa Murray is a free lance reporter. She writes for many syndicated media outlets and is presently working on a series for a national business magazine interviewing healthcare executives in the Greater Tampa Bay area. This interview is part of that series and highlights the work that is being done by the Institute of Women’s Health of North America; the largest healthcare provider for women in the state of Florida. This interview was conducted in two parts; Part I addresses the transformational changes that Abdul Sohail Rao, M. D., M. A., D. Phil., Chief Executive Officer and Chief Research Officer is making in the Institute, and Part II addresses Dr. Rao’s contributions to improving healthcare in the Greater Tampa Bay area as a senior leader at USF Health and the bike incident which had the potential to undermine his legacy in this region.

Orlando, FL (Vocus) December 1, 2009

Over 10% of Floridians are presently uninsured and/or under-insured and lack the resources to obtain quality and affordable health care. This crisis is not limited to the State of Florida but has impacted the lives of Americans in each and every state in the Union. This calamity has been further compounded by the on-going global recession with burgeoning unemployment in the U. S. President Obama and the U. S. Senate and the Congress are taking proactive measures to address this catastrophe by possibly signing into law a bill that would provide healthcare insurance to all Americans without any exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions.

Abdul Sohail Rao, MD, MA, DPhil., was recruited earlier this year as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Research Officer of the Institute of Women's Health of North America; a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in the state of Florida. Dr. Rao presently leads the largest healthcare provider for women in the State and among the largest in North America. He speaks candidly with Lisa Murray about his vision for transforming women's healthcare and clinical research in Florida and for timely implementation of a state-wide plan for effective prevention and treatment of communicable diseases (particularly HIV and STDs). Please visit this website to get full script of this interview: PART I - TRANSFORMING WOMEN'S HEALTHCARE IN FLORIDA

Before joining the Institute, Dr. Rao had made substantial contribution to improving healthcare in the Greater Tampa Bay region as a Senior Associate Vice President of the University of South Florida Health. He was also the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, College of Medicine, Director, School of Biomedical Sciences, and Medical Director, Tampa General Hospital. He also served as the Chief Operating Office of the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute which, until Summer 2008 was an independent entity but ultimately integrated with USF Health as one of its research and clinical centers. He also served as the Institutional Official for the entire USF System and was responsible for providing oversight of all research integrity and compliance issues in the University.

During his tenure at USF Health, Dr. Rao was responsible for establishing 13 core research facilities, enhancing NIH funding by almost three fold particularly during the period when NIH funding was declining, recruited and/or retained >17 faculty, and enhanced the ranking of the medical school from 79 (in 2006) to top 50 in the U. S., in NIH funding. He was also charged with transforming the culture of the medical school a task, which he considered most challenging. He brought transparency into his operations and demanded nothing short of excellence from himself and his colleagues in the office. Please visit this website to get full script of this interview: Please visit this website to get full script of this interview: PART II: ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CHALLENGES AT USF HEALTH

Because of the sweeping changes that he was making at USF Health, he was not the most popular Dean on the campus. As such, many challenging situation were created for him during his tenure at USF Health including the misrepresentation of facts related to the bike incidence at the Byrd Institute. However, no one argues the legacy that he has left behind at this Instituion and its impact on healthcare in the Greater Tampa Bay region. He talks about his legacy at USF Health and about this unfortunate incidence. Please download this part of the interview by visiting this website: Accomplishments and Challenges at USF Health.

Dr. Rao came to USF Health in 2006 from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). He spoke of his time at MTSU with much admiration and deeply regrets leaving that Instituion which he considered most fertile for growth and development. He was Vice Provost for Research and Dean, College of Graduate Studies at MTSU and authored a State-wide vision for enhancing research and graduate education in the Tennessee; a document that now serves as the blueprint for the entire State. He has also served in leadership positions at Drexel University and its College of Medicine, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Rao obtained his medical degree from Dow Medical College and proceeded to obtain a Master’s in Physiology from Boston University. After serving as a Post-doctoral Fellow at Harvard University, he joined the Nuffield Department of Surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford UK as a Clinical Instructor. During his tenure at the University of Oxford, he also obtained his doctorate (Doctor of Philosophy) in Immunology and Pathology. He has to his credit >140 publication in peer-reviewed journals and innumerable invited lectures and presentations.

His passion for serving the community is what prompted him to assume his current position. He and his family donate a lot of their time and money to local charities and he frequently visits Pakistan and other developing countries as a Visiting Scholar to enhance the culture of discovery and innovation in the developing world.

The Secret to a Healthier Relationship May Rest on Buying a Mattress According to New Data from The Better Sleep Council (BSC)

The Secret to a Healthier Relationship May Rest on Buying a Mattress According to New Data from The Better Sleep Council (BSC)

New national survey from the Better Sleep Council (BSC) reveals data linking a new mattress to improved sleep comfort and intimacy.

Alexandria, Va. (PRWEB) October 25, 2007

Americans aren't getting the satisfaction they deserve in bed. But according to a recent Better Sleep Council (BSC) (http://www. bettersleep. org/) survey, the secret to a better, healthier relationship may be hiding under the sheets. In the BSC's latest consumer poll, one out of every two respondents identified an old mattress as the culprit in an unsatisfactory night's sleep and a leading contributor to increased irritability and stress in their romantic relationships.

According to BSC findings (http://www. bettersleep. org/sleeprelationships/sleep_survey_results. asp), an overwhelming 78 percent of respondents agreed that a new mattress could be the key to a better relationship with their significant others. Among leading relationship benefits, people noted that a new mattress could:

-- Leave them more rested at night and more cordial to their partners throughout the day (52 percent),
-- Reduce tossing and turning by their significant others, leading to fewer disturbances and annoyances during the night (40 percent),
-- Encourage them to spend more time in bed with their partners (27 percent),
-- Improve their sex lives (26 percent).

"More than improving relationships, the mattress truly plays an integral role in the total health package," says Nancy Shark, executive director of the Better Sleep Council. "Consumers who invest more in their sleep systems are investing in better sleep and their overall health and well-being."

In fact, scientific research from Oklahoma State University shows that a new mattress leads to significant, sustained improvements in sleep quality and comfort for people who previously slept on mattresses more than five years old. The latest consumer poll from the BSC also found that adults with newer beds (less than five years old) were more than twice as likely to praise their sleep surfaces as "excellent," compared to those with older mattresses (five years or more). What's more, the American Chiropractic Association advises consumers that comfortable mattresses and pillows can help limit back and neck pain.

"As you age, your personal needs for comfort and support may change," says Shark. "That's why it's important to evaluate your mattress every five to seven years to ensure the best sleep possible. If your mattress is not providing you with the good night's sleep you deserve each and every night, it's time to consider buying a new one."

New BSC Consumer Resources Make Mattress Shopping Easier (http://www. bettersleep. org/Ease/guide-shop. asp)

Wondering when and how to shop for a new mattress (http://www. bettersleep. org/Ease/index. asp) shouldn't leave you tossing and turning. To determine whether your mattress is ready for retirement, and to learn the correct way to shop for a new one, the BSC offers the E. A.S. E. method. Here are a few tips to get consumers started:

Evaluate your current bed to determine if it's time for a new one. Ask yourself a few simple questions, such as: Do you wake up with aches and pains? Are you getting a better night's rest somewhere other than your own bed?

Arm yourself with the knowledge needed to make the best purchase. With the variety of options and new technology available, it's important to educate yourself about the current choices in bedding to determine the best fit for your personal needs.

Shop to find the right mattress to suit your individual needs, and be sure to "test drive" your new mattress when shopping in the store. Now available online, BSC offers short videos to guide consumers through each step of the mattress-shopping process.

Ensure that you get the most out of your mattress with quality care. Make sure your new mattress and foundation are properly installed in your home, and be sure to use a good quality, washable mattress pad to protect your bedding system.

For simple solutions to help improve the quality of your sleep and for comprehensive mattress shopping tips, go to www. bettersleep. org to download the BSC's new "Better Sleep Guide: Better Mattress. Better You." (http://www. bettersleep. org/OnBetterSleep/download_guide. asp)

Sleep Professionals and Bloggers Asked To Help Consumers 'Tune Out, Turn Off and Drop Off' Naturally With the GLO TO SLEEP Mask

Sleep Professionals and Bloggers Asked To Help Consumers 'Tune Out, Turn Off and Drop Off' Naturally With the GLO TO SLEEP Mask

There is a safe, effective alternative to sleeping pills that sleep professionals and bloggers should know about - and its called the GLO TO SLEEP™ mask. Information can be found at http://www. santacruzholistics. com

Santa Cruz, CA (PRWEB) April 3, 2008

Today, California wellness products promoter, Santa Cruz Holistics (http://www. santacruzholistics. com) announced that it wants America's health professionals who treat, and bloggers who advise, up to 70 million Americans who spend the night in a restless half-sleep and 'Tune out, Turn off and Drop Off' naturally with the GLO TO SLEEP™ mask because of the side-effects of both over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Santa Cruz Holistics recommends that sleepless Americans switch to the 'GLO TO SLEEP™' mask that naturally changes troubling beta waves to relaxing alpha waves, in preference to the many sleep aids that can be accompanied by bizarre behavioral side effects such as sleep-eating and sleep-driving, in addition to the more common experienced "next day drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, lightheadedness…and difficulty with coordination and memory loss" (a direct quote from the website of the top sleep-aid companies).

Peter Mackeonis, a spokesperson for Santa Cruz Holistics, commented, "We all know that sleep problems have been around since Roman times, but the Romans did not drive on freeways, pilot aircraft, or run nuclear power plants, whereas millions of tired Americans do every day. And, now that sleep issues are widely recognized as causing obesity and diabetes, the drug companies are using massive advertising campaigns to push sleeping pills down the throats of consumers, while soft-peddling the down-side of their products." He continued, "And when you consider the fact that most pills stop working after your body builds up immunity to them, yet are addictive, the consumer is experiencing the worst of all worlds."

Santa Cruz Holistics suggest that whether sleep issues are caused by anxiety, an overactive mind, unusual work schedules or time zone travel, doctors owe it to their patients, and bloggers to their readers, to suggest the drug-free and side-effect free GLO TO SLEEP™ mask, so the sleep-deprived can 'Tune out, Turn off and Drop Off' naturally as the wearer's own body functions transform active beta brain waves into calming alpha waves.

GLO TO SLEEP™ masks:
have no moving parts, wires or batteries are assembled in a medical-grade facility in California - not China are manufactured from lightweight, hypoallergenic (including the adhesive) materials are constructed from completely breathable materials feature a comfortable genuine Velcro strap and not a scratchy imitation retail for $59.95, and have a 100% satisfaction guarantee

For more information, retailers and distributors should visit http://www. santacruzholistics. com and consumers should visit http://www. glotosleep. com.

So, 'Tune out, Turn off and Drop Off' naturally with GLOtoSLEEP™

Canada and European Union Bans American Horsemeat

Canada and European Union Bans American Horsemeat

Europeans focus on food safety issue -- no more poisoned American horse meat

Hitchcock, TX (PRWEB) August 8, 2009

For decades, the gourmet diners of Europe and Japan have eaten American horse meat poisoned by chemical contamination. The horse flesh exporting by unscrupulous producers and horse slaughter plants will come to an end in April of 2010. The new rules enacted by the European Union will mandate chemical free horse meat entering those countries.

American horses are routinely given powerful chemicals prohibited for human consumption such as wormers, Phenylbutazone (Bute), and a host of other deadly medications which are life giving to a horse but cause serious medical issues when ingested by humans. Like DDT, banned for similar reasons, some of these compounds such as Bute remain in a horse's body long after administered. Studies indicate medical issues such as birth defects, anemia, and cancer are brought on when these dangerous chemicals are consumed by humans.

The ban was quietly announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in late July. It quickly exploded across the Internet as news of it made its way to anti-slaughter websites and finally to mainstream equine media worldwide. With the new ban in place, the slaughter of horses exposed to these drugs will stop and the production of commercially available horse meat will grind to a halt.

"We have known of the dangers of chemicals in American horsemeat for years, but our warnings have often fallen on deaf ears," said Jerry Finch, founder of Habitat for Horses, the nation's largest all breed equine rescue organization.

"Thankfully, agencies in the European Union responsible for health safety realized that there is virtually no testing for dangerous chemicals in American horses being sold for food," he said. "Foreign governments will inadvertently bring the slaughter of American horses to a halt while the American government, with their failure to pass legislation, has simply ignored the health of the European people."

Finch says that the same EU rules will halt the export of American horses slaughtered in Mexico for European consumption.

About Habitat for Horses:

Habitat for Horses (HfH) is a not-for-profit equine protection agency committed to the prevention, rescue and rehabilitation of neglected and abused horses. The largest organization of its kind in North America, HfH operates a rehabilitation ranch in Hitchcock, Texas, as well as a growing network of foster homes throughout the United States.

New Grads Need Short-Term Medical Coverage

New Grads Need Short-Term Medical Coverage

College graduates need more than a job and housing, they may also need short-term medical insurance. This is especially important for those grads who are no longer covered by their parents' insurance, but their employee benefits don't start immediately.

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) June 15, 2006

With college graduation season quickly approaching, the class of 2006 is busy finding jobs and places to live. But other needs may not be as apparent – like finding short-term medical insurance. Products like GradMed® (www. GradMed. com) are specifically designed to protect students who are waiting for coverage to be activated at their first job.

This is particularly important because health insurance – either through parents or school – often ends at graduation. Without coverage for the gap between school and getting a job, new grads will be required to pay 100% of any expenses incurred for medical care, which could total thousands of dollars, depending on the accident or illness.

“The challenge is getting students to realize the importance of short-term medical insurance,” said Elissa Connor, Vice President for Insurance Administration at American Insurance Administrators. “We’ve seen too many examples of why this type of coverage is needed. We had one customer incur over $5,000 in bills because of a fall on a rainy night. It’s nearly impossible to avoid this kind of accident, and new grads often don’t have the financial resources to cover the resulting bills.”

GradMed makes obtaining short-term medical coverage easy. The application process can be completed online, with coverage starting as soon as the next day. Multiple coverage periods are available – starting at just 30 days – to make finding the appropriate length of coverage even easier.

Policy details vary by state. Visit www. GradMed. com to see complete information and rates based on age, gender and geographic location.

New Section on Sextant Properties Entitled "Living in France"

New Section on Sextant Properties Entitled "Living in France"

According to Matthieu Cany and Brice Bonato, Managing Directors of Sextant French Property Agents, their website needed more content to better help their customers in their search of a property in France.

London, UK (PRWEB) March 2, 2009

According to Matthieu Cany and Brice Bonato, Managing Directors of Sextant French Property Agents (http://www. sextantproperties. com), their website needed more content to better help their customers in their search of a property in France.

The previous version of the website already included several guides about the most popular regions of France. As time went by, more content has been added such as sub-region and town guides. Navigating on the Brittany (http://www. sextantproperties. com/brittany) pages now gives a pretty clear idea of the work achieved.

Having been in contact with customers purchasing properties in France (http://www. sextantproperties. com) for several years now, the directors decided to better answer the most common questions asked by their customers by developing a new section on the website called "Living in France". This section contains 12 main subjects:
Holidays: this page contains all the useful websites to look at for those looking to spend holidays in France as golfers, skiers or simply for people who are looking to enjoy the sun on a sandy beach. Insurance: this page describes the major aspects related to insurance in France (which is pretty similar to the UK). Lifestyle: this page describes the advantages to spend holidays in France or even better to move to a country well known for its food and wine culture.
Finance: customers might need to take a French mortgage (http://www. sextantproperties. com/french-mortgage) to buy a property; very often they will need to transfer money to France to secure the purchase. If they decide to retire to France, they can set up a regular pension transfer plan between the UK and France. Retiring to France: this is a very passionate subject, most people in the world dream to retire in a sunny place, and France is among the most popular destination for retirees. In this section, people looking to move on a permanent basis will find a lot of tips and useful information before the big leap. Work & Income: For those who are not lucky enough to be retired yet, they can find several ways to get a job in France such as working as a freelancer. In this section, there is some useful information that may help anyone thinking to work in France. Health: France is well known for its excellent healthcare system, this page explains how it works for people moving from abroad. Telephone & Internet: broadband availability is one of the most common questions asked by customers prior to a move in France. There is a link to a website which shows the different zones and access points. Renovation: This page contains a few tips and advice for adventurous people looking to buy a property in need of part or total renovation. Education: The French education system is pretty different to the British one; this page explains very precisely this complicated but efficient system and the different types of schools available. Learning French: Some British people who already moved to France manage to live there without speaking a single word of French. However, if they want to integrate in the local community, they better have to learn a few words of French! French people will be pleased to hear their foreign accent and to help them finding the right words. In this section, there is some information about the different ways to learn French. UK TV in France: British people very often wish to stay connected while they spend holidays or move permanently in France. Getting British channels in France has never been so easy. This section explains how to get UK TV while living in France.

The Sextant French Property team will continue to add more quality content within the next few months in order to become the reference in their field: the French Property (http://www. sextantproperties. com) market.

Limerick Priest Leads Rescue Effort in Mississippi

Limerick Priest Leads Rescue Effort in Mississippi

A Limerick priest is at the centre of the emergency aid drive in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

LIMERICK, Ireland (PRWEB) September 14, 2005

Dr David OÂ’Connor, who is pastor of two parishes in the city of Natchez, Mississippi, 150 miles north of New Orleans, was among the first to provide shelter and food to the many people who were made homeless by the storm and who fled to the city.

He expects that the evacuees will be dependent on aid for many weeks to come. As feeding queues have extended at times to more than 350 people.

Dr OÂ’Connor has repeatedly been called to the local casualty wards since the storm hit to tend to the ill.

But his initial efforts were frustrated by the fact that there was no electricity and the cityÂ’s water system was not functioning.

In addition, the cityÂ’s six shelters had no air conditioning and people sweltered in temperatures of 35 degrees.

However, power was restored after about a-day-and-a-half and relief work was able to commence in earnest. Local churches, the Red Cross and United Way combined all their facilities to help as refugees poured into the city.

Hw commented that his city only got minimum impact and that makes it possible to serve so many who have lost homes and maybe loved ones.

The evacuees include all ages, including the elderly and sick, and children of all ages.

Dr OÂ’ConnorÂ’s two parishes, St Mary Basilica and the Parish of the Assumption pooled resources.

The parish hall at Assumption serves as an overnight and meal centre for approximately 60 people. The parish hall at St Mary Basilica is the clothing headquarters where they gather and sort clothing, and distribute it the same day to needy people.

Approximately 30 volunteers have operated the service since it opened.

The parishes also set up an emergency fund to which people who want to contribute will be able to do so. Donation details are available at www. stmarysbasilica. org

Representatives of the mental health, social services and Church leaders are assessing the emotional and spiritual needs of the evacuees. Some of these people are experiencing great stress and great anxiety and these needs need to be attended to.

Dr OÂ’Connor has been based in America for many years, but has been seconded back to work in Limerick Diocese, notably in city parishes.

He was a noted hurler in his day and his seminal history of his home parish and its sporting achievements, Cill Íde, sold out on the evening of its launch at Ashford, the launch having been performed by his friend, the then president of the GAA, Joe McDonagh. http://www. limerick. com (http://www. limerick. com).

Capital Health Systems Chooses Aprima EHR Solution

Capital Health Systems Chooses Aprima EHR Solution

Multi-specialty, hospital-owned group selects Aprima’s electronic health record to aid workflow of 50 physicians

Dallas, TX (Vocus) July 6, 2010

Aprima Medical Software, a leading developer of electronic health record (EHR), practice management (PM) and revenue cycle management (RCM) solutions for medical practices, today announced that Capital Health Systems, a multi-location, multi-specialty, leading regional health system in central New Jersey, has selected its EHR solution.

“After doing our due diligence and evaluating more than half a dozen companies over the course of a year through on-site demos and various site visits in our area, we chose Aprima’s EHR solution,” said Nat Bosk, FACHE, Vice President, Ambulatory Services Division of Capital Health. “We received positive feedback from doctors we spoke to regarding the ease of use of Aprima’s EHR, which was the key factor in us choosing this product.”

Capital Health Systems manages 13 physician practices, with a total of 49 physicians who span various specialties ranging from endocrinology to cardiology. The health system is set to roll out Aprima’s EHR solution to its first practice in October of this year. As many patients see multiple physicians within the Capital Health System, Bosk and his team feel that having Aprima’s EHR will result in a more effective physician workflow, especially when sharing charts and information.

“Aprima is pleased to be the EHR of choice for this state-of-the art health system,” said Michael Nissenbaum, CEO of Aprima. “As a large, multiple-location health system, Capital Health requires careful and coordinated handling of patient records. Aprima’s software is designed to transition the health system from the cumbersome nature of paper charts to electronic medical records as easily as possible. We are looking forward to providing Capital Health with the guidance it needs to become a more integrated health system.”

Aprima’s template-free, content rich EHR software enables providers to follow their own protocols. Its adaptive learning feature speeds adoption and deployment, a critical capability as medical practices seek to meet “Meaningful Use” standards for government stimulus fund reimbursements. Furthermore, as a single EHR + PM application built on a single database, Aprima affords users with the fastest access to clinical and financial data. AprimaRCM addresses practices’ needs for seasoned financial expertise by delivering insight that helps practices collect every dollar they earn. Aprima’s licensing plans make sense for everyone from a solo rural practitioner to a multi-specialty urban group. Aprima 2011 is a pre-market conditionally CCHIT Certified® 2011 Ambulatory EHR additionally certified for Child Health. For details, click here.

Proxim Connects One of England's Most Remote Communities with Next Generation Wireless Broadband

Proxim Connects One of England's Most Remote Communities with Next Generation Wireless Broadband

Cybermoor's Broadband Project Connects a Community, Creates Jobs and Increases Property Values by 25 Percent

Silicon Valley, CA (Vocus) March 18, 2009

Proxim Wireless Corporation (http://www. proxim. com/) (NASDAQ: PRXM), a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play, today announced that Cybermoor Ltd., a UK market leader in community broadband projects, has signed an agreement to upgrade the existing Cybermoor network on Alston Moor using Proxim's wireless broadband solutions.

Alston Moor is both the highest market town in England as well as one of the most remote - so conventional high-speed broadband service is not available. In 2002 Cybermoor installed the UK's first wireless broadband network in a rural community and Alston Moor quickly became recognized as the "Broadband Capital of Britain" with almost 40% of households having a broadband connection, at the then-fantastic speed of 1 Mbps. This latest upgrade with Proxim equipment will enable all members of the community in Alston Moor to receive wireless service of up to 12 Mbps.

The Cybermoor social enterprise began in 2001 with funding from the British government to investigate how digital communications and computers might help boost rural economies. The first phase used the government funding to provide over 600 computers for the residents of Alston Moor, enough to put a computer in nearly every home in the community at no cost to the residents. The next step was to provide a broadband network that all of these computers could connect to. This original 802.11b network continues to work today but equipment failures are becoming increasingly common with the age of the exposed equipment and interference with home Wi-Fi networks is a constant problem. The new Proxim network uses the 5.8 GHz frequency, so interference will be reduced.

"The distance and terrain between Alston Moor and other towns caused more than just a physical separation - it prevented the deployment of traditional broadband, which created a significant economic separation as well. As a social enterprise, we have far greater customer take up than conventional ISPs, making it easier to plan network upgrades," said Daniel Heery, Project Manager for Cybermoor. "When we were evaluating technologies that could overcome the existing problems and deliver a higher quality and higher speed service to our members in a cost-effective manner, it became clear that Proxim's wireless broadband systems were the optimal solution".

Cybermoor is utilizing Proxim's Tsunami™ MP.11 license-free WiMAX radios to distribute the wireless connection throughout the town. As a result, the entire town is now blanketed with affordable wireless broadband access, which costs only £8.99 ($12) per month. And since the household computers were completely subsidized, residents are able to get connected to the Internet right away.

Proxim's UK partner on this project was 802 Global who, through a series of site visits, worked closely with Cybermoor to define the detailed network plan ensuring that the optimal solution was developed in order to meet end-user requirements. During the installation process, 802 Global is providing comprehensive ongoing support and training to the Cybermoor team.

More than Just Internet Access
While many people debate the legitimacy of the "digital divide" and whether having broadband connectivity truly makes any difference from an economic standpoint, Alston Moor is glaring proof of the opportunities broadband brings. This was not a case of merely providing a town with broadband so that they could surf the Web - the broadband network in Alston Moor is truly changing lives via the services it has empowered and the opportunities it enables.

Telemedicine Makes a House Call
Whereas the people of Alston Moor were once required to drive over 30 miles just to visit the nearest big hospital, the new broadband network will pave the way for a ground-breaking e-health systems. For vulnerable or elderly members of the community, remote monitoring equipment will be placed in their homes, reducing their need to travel and enabling the health service to have a continual check on their health status. This will save residents a great deal of time and money by cutting out nurses visits that are not required.

Education Extends Beyond the Classroom
Now that nearly every home in the town has a household computer, the town's schools saw an improvement in educational attainment. Lessons can be downloaded at home, allowing parents to see what their children are learning and giving pupils the chance to learn at their own pace.

Connecting with New Businesses, and Creating New Jobs
In a perfect example of how broadband connectivity can empower people to change their economic status, one resident moved his business from the South East of England to Alstom Moor. Due to the extremely low cost of office space and connectivity, he was able to cost-effectively run a global business from a refurbished farm. As the town became known for its exceptional and cost-effective broadband network, other businesses began to move into the area. As a result, over 25 new jobs have been created already - a significant number in a town of 2,500 people.

It All Adds Up
In the case of Alston Moor, the ROI of bridging the digital divide is no grey area. The improved educational system, improved public service delivery and the creation of new jobs all added up to a number of measurable benefits. In addition to the new businesses that were attracted to the town and the 25 new jobs that were created, property values in Alston Moor rose over 25 percent. Between the value of the new jobs created and the dramatic increase in property values, the ROI for the Proxim network is more than 25x the amount invested.

"The town of Alston Moor is the perfect example of what people can achieve when they are enabled with the right technologies," said Daniel Heery, Project Manager for Cybermoor. "People are connecting with others in the community, new businesses are coming into the town because of the broadband network, and new jobs have been created. Despite the fact that this is a small town of just 2,500 people, the impact of this network on the residents has been undeniable. And the overwhelming success of this program has positioned us as a national example of how to cost-effectively roll out broadband services to similar remote areas throughout the country."

"Bridging the digital divide is a global issue, and wired technology often fails in helping close the gap due to the high cost of materials and services required to reach remote areas," said Simon Snowdon, UK Sales Manager at Proxim Wireless. "Especially in these economic times where you must pair the extension of broadband services with cost-effectiveness, wireless is the fiscally responsible option. We have provided the end-to-end broadband wireless networks for many rural communities throughout the world, and we are always encouraged to see the positive economic impact that broadband connectivity has on these areas."

About Cybermoor Ltd.
Cybermoor Ltd is a founder member of the Community Broadband Network supporting the growth of broadband across the country. Today, with its deployment in Alston Moor, Cybermoor Ltd has the highest penetration of broadband in any rural area in England. Cybermoor provides a model for other rural towns to follow and now advises other organisations on how they too can secure funding and create their own community broadband networks.
