1. Your Nose Knows - You should avoid salons where you notice strong odors. 3. Lethal Weapon - Any instrument that is used as part of a Spa service, from nail files to hair trimmers, should be properly disinfected after each use, not once at the end of the day.

In addition, salon instruments are not the only thing that may be carrying germs or harmful bacteria; pedicure tub, manicure station and massage table surfaces all must be sanitized after each guest. 5. Help Your Self - Le Jardin suggests that guests avoid shaving their legs immediately prior to any pedicure, or facial waxing prior to any facial. This will decrease any self-inflicted cuts, nicks or blemishes which could result in an infection. Meanwhile, don't have your cuticles trimmed too aggressively, this could cause unnecessary bleeding.

6. You Get What You Pay For - The price of your service does not indicate that you'll receive a higher quality or safer experience. Do your homework.

7. Do Ask, Do Tell - Don't hesitate to ask for a technician's license. All salons should have their Health & Safety Certificate displayed and should have the licenses of their technicians readily available.

Sarah Brown, wife of U. K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, made headlines recently when she removed her shoes at a Hindu temple, displaying the corns and calluses on her feet. She joined celebrities including Katie Holmes, Amanda Bynes and Rihanna, who are known for having less-than-perfect-feet.

In fact, nearly 10 percent of American women and five percent of the population as a whole suffer from unsightly, often painful corns and calluses that make their feet best suited for boots and other winter shoe styles. But according to dermatologist Dr. Joshua Fox, “by taking care of these problems now, woman and men can enjoy the summer in sandals or their bare feet.”

“Corns and calluses are caused by friction and pressure on the feet, either from wearing shoes that don’t fit properly or from conditions such as arthritis, trauma, bunions or various deformities,” says Dr. Fox, founder of Advanced Dermatology and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology.

“While most corns and calluses are unsightly, only some cause pain. If you are in good health, you don’t have to see a professional for corns and calluses unless they hurt or bother your walking. But, if you don’t like the way your feet look, if you are having pain or if you have certain medical conditions including diabetes, poor circulation or numbness in the feet, it’s important that you see a doctor or podiatrist who can evaluate the problem and help you remove the corns and calluses.”

According to Harry Baldinger, M. D., an esteemed podiatrist in Monsey, N. Y., “Most people do not get calluses or corns. People do get them when there is extra friction at some point during the gait cycle. Sometimes the cause is the structure of the foot which could be adjusted with devices, biomechanical and padding devices.” “Sometimes, surgical intervention is needed if the foot structure is out of the ‘normal’ range. Usually, this type of surgery is NOT cosmetic in nature but rather to make the foot fit the shoe,” adds Dr. Baldinger.

Dr. Fox explains that the yellow or gray, thick, hardened, dead skin on the feet known as calluses and corns form to protect the skin from pressure, friction and injury. While both calluses and corns are less sensitive to the touch than surrounding skin and may feel bumpy, the two are different. Both calluses and hard corns are hard, dry and thick, while a soft corn looks like an open sore. Corns that are neglected can turn into sores which may become infected. Both corns and calluses are diagnosed during a physical exam; your doctor may want to x-ray the foot if he or she suspects a problem with the underlying bone which can be treated by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon.

“The best way to remove a corn or callus is to prevent it from forming in the first place,” says Dr. Fox, who offers several at-home suggestions to prevent corns and calluses from forming. “Wear shoes that fit well and give your toes plenty of room,” he says. “Wear protective coverings such as felt pads, lambs wool, cotton balls or bandages over the parts of your feet that rub against your shoes. If that doesn’t work and you’ve developed a corn or callus, you can try an at-home treatment,” he adds.

If you start to feel pain, Dr. Fox says, the first thing to do is to remove the pressure or friction that is causing the problem, giving it time to heal. This is done by wearing shoes that fit properly and using protective padding, which can be purchased at a drug store, to cushion the callus or corn. Soaking your feet in warm, soapy water can soften corns and calluses, making it easier to remove the thickened skin.”

Before joining the Institute, Dr. Rao had made substantial contribution to improving healthcare in the Greater Tampa Bay region as a Senior Associate Vice President of the University of South Florida Health. He was also the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, College of Medicine, Director, School of Biomedical Sciences, and Medical Director, Tampa General Hospital. Because of the sweeping changes that he was making at USF Health, he was not the most popular Dean on the campus. Dr. Rao obtained his medical degree from Dow Medical College and proceeded to obtain a Master’s in Physiology from Boston University. After serving as a Post-doctoral Fellow at Harvard University, he joined the Nuffield Department of Surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford UK as a Clinical Instructor. During his tenure at the University of Oxford, he also obtained his doctorate (Doctor of Philosophy) in Immunology and Pathology. "More than improving relationships, the mattress truly plays an integral role in the total health package," says Nancy Shark, executive director of the Better Sleep Council. "Consumers who invest more in their sleep systems are investing in better sleep and their overall health and well-being."

In fact, scientific research from Oklahoma State University shows that a new mattress leads to significant, sustained improvements in sleep quality and comfort for people who previously slept on mattresses more than five years old. The latest consumer poll from the BSC also found that adults with newer beds (less than five years old) were more than twice as likely to praise their sleep surfaces as "excellent," compared to those with older mattresses (five years or more). What's more, the American Chiropractic Association advises consumers that comfortable mattresses and pillows can help limit back and neck pain.

"As you age, your personal needs for comfort and support may change," says Shark. "That's why it's important to evaluate your mattress every five to seven years to ensure the best sleep possible. If your mattress is not providing you with the good night's sleep you deserve each and every night, it's time to consider buying a new one."

For decades, the gourmet diners of Europe and Japan have eaten American horse meat poisoned by chemical contamination. The horse flesh exporting by unscrupulous producers and horse slaughter plants will come to an end in April of 2010. The new rules enacted by the European Union will mandate chemical free horse meat entering those countries.

American horses are routinely given powerful chemicals prohibited for human consumption such as wormers, Phenylbutazone (Bute), and a host of other deadly medications which are life giving to a horse but cause serious medical issues when ingested by humans. Like DDT, banned for similar reasons, some of these compounds such as Bute remain in a horse's body long after administered. Studies indicate medical issues such as birth defects, anemia, and cancer are brought on when these dangerous chemicals are consumed by humans.

The ban was quietly announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in late July. It quickly exploded across the Internet as news of it made its way to anti-slaughter websites and finally to mainstream equine media worldwide. With the new ban in place, the slaughter of horses exposed to these drugs will stop and the production of commercially available horse meat will grind to a halt.

"We have known of the dangers of chemicals in American horsemeat for years, but our warnings have often fallen on deaf ears," said Jerry Finch, founder of Habitat for Horses, the nation's largest all breed equine rescue organization.

"Thankfully, agencies in the European Union responsible for health safety realized that there is virtually no testing for dangerous chemicals in American horses being sold for food," he said. "Foreign governments will inadvertently bring the slaughter of American horses to a halt while the American government, with their failure to pass legislation, has simply ignored the health of the European people."

Finch says that the same EU rules will halt the export of American horses slaughtered in Mexico for European consumption.

A Limerick priest is at the centre of the emergency aid drive in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

LIMERICK, Ireland (PRWEB) September 14, 2005

Dr David OÂ’Connor, who is pastor of two parishes in the city of Natchez, Mississippi, 150 miles north of New Orleans, was among the first to provide shelter and food to the many people who were made homeless by the storm and who fled to the city.

He expects that the evacuees will be dependent on aid for many weeks to come. As feeding queues have extended at times to more than 350 people.

Dr OÂ’Connor has repeatedly been called to the local casualty wards since the storm hit to tend to the ill.

But his initial efforts were frustrated by the fact that there was no electricity and the cityÂ’s water system was not functioning.

In addition, the cityÂ’s six shelters had no air conditioning and people sweltered in temperatures of 35 degrees.

However, power was restored after about a-day-and-a-half and relief work was able to commence in earnest. Local churches, the Red Cross and United Way combined all their facilities to help as refugees poured into the city.

Hw commented that his city only got minimum impact and that makes it possible to serve so many who have lost homes and maybe loved ones.

The evacuees include all ages, including the elderly and sick, and children of all ages.

Dr OÂ’ConnorÂ’s two parishes, St Mary Basilica and the Parish of the Assumption pooled resources.

The parish hall at Assumption serves as an overnight and meal centre for approximately 60 people. The parish hall at St Mary Basilica is the clothing headquarters where they gather and sort clothing, and distribute it the same day to needy people.

Approximately 30 volunteers have operated the service since it opened.

The parishes also set up an emergency fund to which people who want to contribute will be able to do so. Donation details are available at www. stmarysbasilica. org

Representatives of the mental health, social services and Church leaders are assessing the emotional and spiritual needs of the evacuees. Some of these people are experiencing great stress and great anxiety and these needs need to be attended to.

Dr OÂ’Connor has been based in America for many years, but has been seconded back to work in Limerick Diocese, notably in city parishes.

Alston Moor is both the highest market town in England as well as one of the most remote - so conventional high-speed broadband service is not available. In 2002 Cybermoor installed the UK's first wireless broadband network in a rural community and Alston Moor quickly became recognized as the "Broadband Capital of Britain" with almost 40% of households having a broadband connection, at the then-fantastic speed of 1 Mbps. This latest upgrade with Proxim equipment will enable all members of the community in Alston Moor to receive wireless service of up to 12 Mbps.

The Cybermoor social enterprise began in 2001 with funding from the British government to investigate how digital communications and computers might help boost rural economies. The first phase used the government funding to provide over 600 computers for the residents of Alston Moor, enough to put a computer in nearly every home in the community at no cost to the residents. The next step was to provide a broadband network that all of these computers could connect to. This original 802.11b network continues to work today but equipment failures are becoming increasingly common with the age of the exposed equipment and interference with home Wi-Fi networks is a constant problem. The new Proxim network uses the 5.8 GHz frequency, so interference will be reduced.

"The distance and terrain between Alston Moor and other towns caused more than just a physical separation - it prevented the deployment of traditional broadband, which created a significant economic separation as well. As a social enterprise, we have far greater customer take up than conventional ISPs, making it easier to plan network upgrades," said Daniel Heery, Project Manager for Cybermoor. Cybermoor is utilizing Proxim's Tsunami™ MP.11 license-free WiMAX radios to distribute the wireless connection throughout the town. More than Just Internet Access
While many people debate the legitimacy of the "digital divide" and whether having broadband connectivity truly makes any difference from an economic standpoint, Alston Moor is glaring proof of the opportunities broadband brings. This was not a case of merely providing a town with broadband so that they could surf the Web - the broadband network in Alston Moor is truly changing lives via the services it has empowered and the opportunities it enables.

Telemedicine Makes a House Call
Whereas the people of Alston Moor were once required to drive over 30 miles just to visit the nearest big hospital, the new broadband network will pave the way for a ground-breaking e-health systems. For vulnerable or elderly members of the community, remote monitoring equipment will be placed in their homes, reducing their need to travel and enabling the health service to have a continual check on their health status. This will save residents a great deal of time and money by cutting out nurses visits that are not required.

Education Extends Beyond the Classroom
Now that nearly every home in the town has a household computer, the town's schools saw an improvement in educational attainment. Lessons can be downloaded at home, allowing parents to see what their children are learning and giving pupils the chance to learn at their own pace.

In a perfect example of how broadband connectivity can empower people to change their economic status, one resident moved his business from the South East of England to Alstom Moor. Due to the extremely low cost of office space and connectivity, he was able to cost-effectively run a global business from a refurbished farm. As the town became known for its exceptional and cost-effective broadband network, other businesses began to move into the area. As a result, over 25 new jobs have been created already - a significant number in a town of 2,500 people.
