Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. Since it was first introduced in the United States in the 1980Â’s, many refinements have been made (more on the history of Liposuction). The most significant improvement was the use of dilute local anesthetic instead of general anesthesia, which was invented by a dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Klein. This is referred to as the Klein tumescent technique (more on comparison of different liposuction techniques).

With liposuction surgery, both men and women can improve the contours of their bodies through a relatively simple and safe technique. Liposuction surgery involves the removal of fat cells from the body. It is designed for those who have specific areas of localized fat deposits and who have tried unsuccessfully to eliminate them through diet, exercise and weight loss.

While the procedure is not designed to correct general obesity, any area where excess fat deposits have accumulated can be treated. These include the chin, neck, jowls, cheeks, arms, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees, hips and abdomen. Men with enlarged breasts can also benefit from this technique.

Before Surgery

Prior to surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate the general health of the patient. The procedure is almost always performed under local anesthesia.

The Procedure

The "tumescent" procedure is used where a large amount of diluted local anesthetic is injected into the area. This procedure has the advantage of reducing pain and bruising in the area. The physician then makes a small incision in the skin and inserts a micro cannula attached to a vacuum suction. This is a new method, where the size of the cannula used are so small that the procedure is made more safe, with less down time and more consistent results. The liquified fat is then removed from the body by suction. After the incisions are closed, a compressive dressing or bandage is applied to the area to prevent bleeding, reduce swelling and support the affected area.

Following Surgery

A compression garment is worn for about one week following the surgery. Following surgery, pain is minimal to moderate and is controlled with oral medication. Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection. Most patients are completely ambulatory immediately following surgery but rest is recommended for the initial postoperative period. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities within a few days although vigorous physical activity is discouraged immediately following surgery.

Who is a potential candidate?

Most patients have localized fat deposits and some of our happiest patients are within twenty to thirty pounds of their ideal weight, and have been stable at that weight for years. Some patients have certain bulges irrespective of their weight and others are content with their weight, but would be more comfortable if certain bulges were recontoured. The best candidates for liposuction are in good health and have realistic expectations of the benefits of liposuction.

I am a writer and I have published a book called “Epilepsy You’re Not Alone.” Epilepsy You’re Not Alone is an inspirational self - help book that teaches people with epilepsy how to live a healthy and productive life. The book shares encouraging stories and gives readers a workable program for coping with their disorder enabling readers to overcome their disorder and get on with their lives.

I have a third book coming out this fall called “Epilepsy and Pregnancy: What Every Women Should Know”, Co-authored by Dr. Blanca Vasques. Through my efforts, I have been able to show other women that it is not impossible to become a mother. I have given women and couples hope and a new look on life. Epilepsy is just a disorder. Your life does not end because you have epilepsy.

I have a forth book coming out in the fall of 2005, called “Eternal Love: Romantic Poetry That Comes Straight from the Heart”. I have a fifth book coming out called, “Faith, Courage, Wisdom Strength and Hope: Inspirational Poetry that comes from the Heart”.

Accomplishments: I am an H. O.P. E. Mentor, for the Epilepsy Foundation. I speak at different events for schools, organizations, political events and anywhere my help is needed to educate people about epilepsy. I have recently been on four talk shows. The interviews focused on the importance of understanding what epilepsy is, how to help someone having a seizure and giving people with epilepsy encouragement and hope for the future.

I have been on radio stations discussing epilepsy and I have recently appeared in many newspapers all over New Jersey such as, The Leader, Belleville Post and the Star Ledger. On June 26, 2002, I was honored an award by the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey for Outstanding Volunteer Award and I spoke in Washington in front of congress.

Team wins Small Business Innovation Research award to deploy Mi-Forms and study its effectiveness for clinical trial data collection at UNC.

Mi-Co and its partners, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Breast Imaging Section, Health Decisions and American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) have been awarded a $750,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the National Institute of HealthÂ’s National Cancer Institute. Mi-Co will utilize its Mi-Forms product suite in order to study the impact of the industry-leading digital writing, data capture software in a clinical trials setting.

This contract will build upon previously successful work by Mi-Co and UNC Breast Imaging Section. In the Phase I study, the research team assessed alternative pen based methods of recording clinical trial data through the digital writing process. The research team found that the Tablet PC and the Anoto functionality Digital Pen when using the Mi-Forms Software were more efficient, effective and satisfying to users than the more traditional methods. The traditional methods assessed included standard pen on paper processes as well as first generation digital writing technology using the Pocket PC.

In the second phase of the program, Mi-Co, ACRIN and UNC will deploy Mi-Forms with Digital Pens and Tablet PCs on a targeted basis for a clinical trial that is being conducted at UNC.

Dr. Etta Pisano at UNC is optimistic about the use of the Mi-Co technology in the clinical trial setting. “Mi-Co’s technology is very exciting because it will make participation in clinical trials easier and more acceptable to very busy clinicians. The digital writing techniques we have been testing are much easier to use than a keyboard and mouse. In addition, these techniques will provide more accurate data because of the system’s ability to check for data errors throughout the process from data capture to data communication.”

“The entire project team is truly excited about this award. We will see the entire system working in a very demanding environment because of FDA regulations for clinical trials software and processes and the very high data quality standards of the ACRIN organization,” said Dr. Greg Clary, Principal Investigator and CTO at Mi-Co.

“The payoff for organizations conducting clinical trials and using digital writing technology could be extraordinary,” continued Clary. “The number of steps that can be eliminated or reduced in the process of data capture to data utilization and analysis is significant. We have seen the impact of the ease of use of the Mi-Forms system, as well as the positive impact of the system’s error checking, in a number of settings and adding the ACRIN clinical trials process will be beneficial to all organizations that are subject to FDA requirements.”

In addition to the specific assessment of data capture and digital writing solutions that turn handwriting into electronic text, the study also includes implementing the transfer of data from Mi-Forms to ACRINÂ’s Oracle backend system via XML.

Bonnie Kotch was having a bad year in 2003. Her marriage had been falling apart, a bad business partner took off with their clients’ money, and her husband came home one day and told her that when her boys were 18, he was leaving her.

“I went into a tailspin,” admits Bonnie. She had been self employed for over four years at that point. After loosing her clients, she found herself looking for $7.00 an hour jobs in a rural area that “really offered nothing more than that.”

Her kids lost their healthcare when her husband quit his full time job to go back to school, expecting Bonnie to support him. Bonnie was looking for work in the economically depressed Northeast Pennsylvania and coming up empty. She wasn’t about to spend the next four years working at some convenience store so her husband could get his degree and leave her. She moved out in June of 2003.

“I had two teenage boys, no job, no healthcare for them, my business in shambles, I owed money to people. I had to move in with my mother at the age of thirty-eight and rock bottom hadn’t even started yet.” She recalls with a hint of the anger she felt, “I had to go on assistance. I was demoralized. I couldn’t even afford a divorce.”

After taking a job that paid less than $200 a week with an insurance company, she made the decision to move to another area where her skills were more in demand, but she ran into other problems. Her credit was bad because of sudden lack of income, and her employment history stopped in 1998. What skills she had were not wanted without a degree and she didn’t have one. Unresolved bills, car repossession, not to mention the usual gilt, anger and fear one has for their children’s well-being.

She was sick of employers evaluating her on lack of degree, digging into her credit, interrogating her on her recently spotty employment. “Why do I need to spend $50,000 dollars and four years of my life to get a piece of paper to prove I know what I’ve already put into action?” She points out. “And credit? It’s none of their business. I will never again sign a piece of paper inviting some twenty-five year old human resource manager into my private financial affairs. I was done job hunting. It was a major wake up call.” Remembering the frustration, she adds “I don’t need someone who doesn’t know me at all, to tell me what I’m worth. That was the end of my self pity party.”

Bonnie had kept a newsletter running two years after her split with her husband. Most of her subscribers were single parents, through divorce or death. Most of them were looking for ways to make money online. Some of them made money selling her clients’ goods online.

In corresponding with these people, Bonnie realized that they had talents and skills that weren’t being used. “People going online looking to make some extra income just look for the bold ads with the dollar signs. They don’t realize that they have products, knowledge and the skills to offer services to people who need them.” She says, “These people are creative! One lady was a literacy professor! She could start her own online tutoring site! Another guy was a retired music history teacher. Another was a software creator! All these people had something that would make someone else’s life easier, be it a product, a service or just knowledge! Everyone is an expert at something.”

In early 2005, Bonnie continued her newsletter, but began expanding her site with the idea of helping people package their product, and promote it for free or nearly free. “Most people don’t know that you really don’t need a business loan to get a business started, even if you are starting it offline.”

Trinity Affiliate Marketing Systems grew out of a bombed business that held on to survival by a newsletter that people still gravitated toward. “My gift has been in helping people achieve what they previously thought beyond them.” Bonnie says. “TAMS is not a course or an e-book. It’s a practical application system that is designed to help struggling web site owners, affiliate marketers, and home business owners develop their own business ideas, set up, and advertise for little or no money.”

How is that possible?

Bonnie replies, “Everyone has something that can help someone else. It’s not so much a business system, but a sharing system. We have good writers that are members; we have webmasters that are members, publishers, software creators, and teachers. What someone else needs, someone else has.” She beams. “We have a joint venture community. We help people find partners to get their business ideas launched. If they can’t find someone, we find one for them.”

Bonnie offers home business start up business plan templates, mini-courses on market research and competition analysis and business development. Her 7-step system includes web site development and tools, product vendors to partner with, free advertising sources, writing tutorials, joint venture partner directory and one-on-one assistance from start to profit.

"People can do this." She says, "If I can bring money into my house, with the monkeys I had on my back, I know someone else can do it. They just need support and encouragement, and a break."

Benecol lowered levels of serum cholesterol and LDL (“the bad cholesterol”) by 10% and 15%, respectively within two weeks at consumption levels of 2 grams of per day. The cholesterol-lowering action is independent of the fat content of the background diet, and additive to the effect of statins. If consumption is continuous, the effect is permanent. Benecol is lactose-free and vegetarian.

Recovery Path Foundation (RPF) is a 501c3 non-profit organization pioneering the way we view, provide health care to, and support those seeking recovery from co-occurring eating disorders and substance addiction (EDSA). While a major focus will be on research and education, RPF will, in the future, provide grants to qualified individuals requiring engagement in a prescribed, long-term treatment plan. Eligibility will be based on commitment level, financial status, and proper diagnosis.

“Every single member of society is affected by eating disorders and substance abuse – directly through their own personal experience, dealing with family, friends or loved ones and indirectly through personal safety, increases in healthcare costs or issues in the workplace,” says Leslie Migliozzi, Executive Director of Recovery Path Foundation. “If we were to invite everyone with EDSA in the greater Tampa Bay area to a football game, we’d be close to having a sold-out stadium.”

According to a December 2003 report by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, 50% of people with an eating disorder abuse drugs or alcohol, and 35% of people with substance dependence has an eating disorder.

RPF is collaborating with reputable mental health facilities, treatment centers and professionals; academic institutions; businesses; legislators; and community organizations to develop programs that answer the questions: What does co-occurring mean? What are the signs? How do we eliminate the shame? How do we remove the barriers to healthcare? How can the community help?

“In addition to other fundraising activities and partnerships, we are starting an intensive 30-40-50 campaign,” says Carol Wheeler, Director of Development for Recovery Path Foundation. “We are asking for (30) $5000, (40) $1000, and (50) $500 donations, although we welcome any amount. We need these funds because investing in the prevention and treatment of these diseases can save us millions in the costs of the consequences.”

In 2001, a study commissioned by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, the Schneider Institute for Health Policy at Brandeis University found that there is a significant national population battling substances - 18 million people with alcohol, 6 million with drugs and more than 5 million people have an eating disorder. For every $1 spent on preventative treatment, society can save between $4 and $15 on the consequences.

“We understand that we cannot treat these diseases with a quick fix. What we need to do is educate, inform and invest in long-term, comprehensive care… and it takes us all to make a difference,” says Migliozzi.

The site which had its soft launch in May of 2006 provides a source of education, information, and support. “It all started because the eight other girls in the founding circle and I got tired of feeling that everyone was talking about us rather than to us. We set out to create a place that not only spoke to us but let us speak out too!,” said Borow, “A place where we could share our stories, ask our questions, and get advice, from people going through the exact same thing. A place that was honest, ripe, and organic. We did it, and that place is now Girls’ Guide To.,.”

The founding circle is made up of nine young women, all educated in different walks of life. They’re scattered around the United States and all believe whole-heartedly in the mission of Girls Guide To.

Backing up the Founding Circle is its Board of Advisors. A group of successful women established in various fields including healthcare, fashion, marketing, finance and entertainment.

“Not only do we have our thoughts and stories, but we have the expertise and professionalism of women who have lived it and prove that you can make what you want of your life,” says Cassie Mancuso, founding circle member.

“It’s more than a website, it truly is a destination. It’s the stuff we dealt with or are even still dealing with. Love, life, relationships, finances, grad school, finding the perfect career, or even just an apartment!,” Isabel Mize, founding circle member, said. “Young women are living on their own for the first time and it’s scary. We’re trying to offer as real a look as possible into the ‘real world’.”

“It’s like passing the baton. We’ve all had to learn a lot the hard way. Now we can be the reassurance that life moves on, the dramas pass, and in the end you’re still standing,” Borow said.

Girls’ Guide To is definitely not short on content. From the perfect job interview outfit to eating disorders; it’s all covered. Visitors to the site can post questions, write their own articles on topics and direct the site in any direction they want it to go.

Simone Anderson-Thompson a high school counselor and founding circle member reiterates, “So many of today’s young women are facing the challenges of the new world. Some can’t turn to their parents, and others might not feel comfortable asking their friends. That’s where Girls’ Guide To comes in.”

“I wish there was something like this when I was growing up… I work with young women on a regular basis and just knowing that there is now a place for them to go where they are understood for not only who they are but what they are going through is what is so appealing about Girls’ Guide To,” says Advisory Board member, Heather Rider, Los Angeles personal trainer/eating disorder specialist.

Hard topics are tackled, but that’s just the beginning of Girls’ Guide To. The site offers daily tips, fun recipes to try, book reviews, shopping tips, regular car maintenance, and other miscellaneous “411” tid-bits.

“The point is if a user wants to see something on the site, then we’re going to try our best to find an answer, an article, or someone that can relate to that. It’s taking all the advice our moms taught us and putting a fresh twist and outlook on it,” said Borow, “That’s why we’re here.
