FauxPanels. com Covers It All with New Faux Stone and Brick Panels

FauxPanels. com Covers It All with New Faux Stone and Brick Panels

With four new product lines, FauxPanels. com now boasts the biggest online selection of faux wood, stone and brick panels anywhere. New website features help homeowners and remodelers choose products that fit their needs and tastes, order them easily and install them properly.

Deer Park, NY (PRWEB) August 7, 2008

FauxPanels. com today announced a major expansion of their product lines, multiplying their offerings by adding four new lines and over 400 new products. This expansion gives FauxPanels. com (http://www. fauxpanels. com) the distinction of providing more kinds of faux stone panels online than anyone else. They also announced a redesigned web site offering new and enhanced features for selecting, evaluating and ordering the full range of faux panel products.

"With gas prices up, people are traveling less and investing more in their homes," says Faux Panel sales manager Jeff Ommundsen. "All the do-it-yourself programs on TV get homeowners excited about doing projects, whether they do all the work themselves or hire a contractor. Either way, our products make the project much easier and more affordable."

The four new product lines complement the company's original and newly expanded Oxford line of faux rock panels.

Regency random rock, stacked stone and brick faux panels for deeper realism (http://www. fauxpanels. com/line-regency. php).

"The industry is demanding faux products that look highly realistic," says Ommundsen. "To that end we've added a new dimension to faux panels with our Regency line. It's a more dimensional product, to give you a real 3D look of stone." The Regency line includes panels that look like random rock, stacked stone and brick.

Windsor random rock, drystack and ledgestone faux panels for a distinctive look (http://www. fauxpanels. com/line-windsor. php).

The Windsor line of fake stone panels offers still more rock and stone designs, including actual stone dust in the construction for a more realistic texture. They offer the same ease of handling and installation, light weight, durability and touch-it-to-believe-it realism as the other fake panel lines. Used inside or outside, the simulated panels can cover an entire wall or highlight a single structure or feature.

Nailon faux stone and brick siding instead of vinyl (http://www. fauxpanels. com/line-nailon. php).

The Nailon line is a new alternative to vinyl siding. "For the homeowner or contractor who is already familiar with how to install vinyl siding, our new Nailon line gives the look of stone or brick with a similar installation technique," says Ommundsen. Nailon siding is made of injection-molded polypropylene for long-lasting durability and treated with stabilizers to maintain its appearance over time. It's equally at home on residential and commercial buildings.

Majesty faux stone and brick columns (http://www. fauxpanels. com/line-fauxcolumns. php) for the masonry look without a mason.

"Another example of simplifying installation is our new Majesty faux columns." According to Ommundsen, "You no longer need to hire a mason to achieve the look of a stone or brick column or fence post or mailbox." The Majesty line of faux columns gives the homeowner and remodeler new options for using faux materials as columns and posts for fences, gates, balustrades, lamps, mailboxes and more. The columns are sturdy and substantial but also meet safety regulations for collapsing on impact.

Easy to browse, choose and order the full range of faux panel products.

With more than 400 new products online, the FauxPanels. com web site itself has also grown and improved.
The panel selector lets visitors quickly narrow their choices to find the panels that meet their needs and fit their tastes. Reviews written by fellow homeowners and remodelers give real-world perspective, opinions and tips. The site now offers shopping by panel style as well as searching by keyword or model number. Illustrated instructions and video tutorials explain every step of the installation process. Ordering is quick and easy. Shoppers can even order a gift certificate for a fellow remodeler. All these new products and features are available now at FauxPanels. com.

The advantages of faux panels (http://www. fauxpanels. com):
Faux panels offer an affordable, easy-to-install, maintenance-free alternative to actual wood, stone or brick paneling or siding. The paneling is incredibly realistic because each is cast from a mold of the actual stone, rock, brick or wood, keeping every detail. Unlike other panels, these are not made from vinyl, with its accompanying environmental and health concerns. FauxPanels. com products are constructed from rigid polyurethane for a maintenance-free long life. They are not affected by moisture, heat, cold or insects and can be easily cleaned with a garden hose. Many of the panels are also available with a Class A fire rating for added protection.

About FauxPanels. com:
Faux Panels leads the industry with the most realistic faux brick, stone and wood paneling, siding and column products on the market. It is a subsidiary of Barron Designs Inc., a family business dedicated to the home improvement industry since 1972. For more information, visit FauxPanels. com (http://www. fauxpanels. com).

Walsworth Publishing Names First Winner in Student Scholarship Sweepstakes, Helps Chicago-Area Student Start the Road Toward College

Walsworth Publishing Names First Winner in Student Scholarship Sweepstakes, Helps Chicago-Area Student Start the Road Toward College

Walsworth Publishing Company announced the first winner in its Student Scholarship Sweepstakes. Brendan Keady, a senior at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Ill., won the October drawing and became the first of three $1,000 winners.

Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) November 25, 2009

Walsworth Publishing Company announced the first winner in its Student Scholarship Sweepstakes. Brendan Keady, a senior at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Ill., won the October drawing and became the first of three $1,000 winners.

Representatives from Walsworth presented Keady with a $1,000 oversized check last week during a ceremony in his English class at Fenwick.

"When I got the letter in the mail saying, 'Congratulations, you won,' I was pretty stunned," said Keady. "I've been applying for so many scholarships to help me with college, and I just never expected to win."

Keady, who is still undecided on where he would like to attend college, said he plans on using the $1,000 winnings from Walsworth as a start down the long road toward medical school.

"Ever since I was a little kid, I've always wanted to become a doctor," said Keady. "That's always been my ambition. That's what I plan on studying."

Brendan's father, Tom Keady, said Brendan suffered from severe allergy and sinus problems as a small child, even needing operations on his ears before he was five years old. All the treatments at a young age paid off and Brendan thrived as a healthy, successful athlete, playing football at Fenwick.

"(Brendan) got to know doctors at a very young age, and I think that's why he sort of locked on to that," said Tom Keady. "He wants to be a pediatrician, or a sports doctor. He wants to help people, the way the doctors helped him."

Students and parents can continue to register to win in the final drawing until Nov. 30 by visiting yearbookforever. com/win (http://www. yearbookforever. com/win). One drawing remains in early December. The winner of the Sweepstakes drawing from November will be announced within the next few weeks.

The Scholarship Sweepstakes is part of Walsworth's yearlong effort to help schools show their audience just how special the yearbook is. Schools taking part in Walsworth's Online Sales program were given access to marketing materials promoting the Sweepstakes, including posters, fliers, web ads and other materials, all with the theme of capturing a snapshot of high school life and asking students if they will remember it "10 years from today."

"The Scholarship Sweepstakes gives our yearbook staffs a perfect opportunity to promote the wonderful thing about yearbooks - the value they continue to hold over time," said Alex Blackwell, Walsworth's director of yearbook marketing. "Yearbooks are fun now, but they become irreplaceable years later."

Rescue Groups Sponsor 2-for-1 Adoption Weekend in Houston

Rescue Groups Sponsor 2-for-1 Adoption Weekend in Houston

Rescue groups ask Houston area residents to "Have a Heart for Homeless Animals" - calling all Houstonians to please get involved and adopt an animal--or two...Thursday, February 14th through Monday, February 18th. Many shelters will be offering half price or 2-for-1 pet adoptions to approved adopters. Adoption policies and costs vary by shelter and specific shelter promotions can be found at each web site. (Participating shelters are listed.) Also, several rescue groups, like Saint Bernard and a Lab rescue group also need help -- fostering, adopting, donating and fundraising. Asked why residents should adopt, Millicent Gerdes, the volunteer manager of the Highland Village Animal Adoption Center said, "Adopting a homeless animal is the right thing to do. There is an overpopulation of loveable, friendly dogs who desperately need homes." Dogs in the program have only 90 days to pull on your heartstrings and to be adopted. If they are not adopted, they are euthanized, no matter how adorable or cute they are. Help homeless animals in the greater Houston area find homes or support their rescue groups.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 14, 2008

Houston area rescue groups are asking all Houstonians to "Have a Heart for Homeless Animals" Thursday, February 14 through Monday, February 18. Five shelters will be offering half price or 2-for-1 pet adoptions to approved adopters. Adoption policies and costs vary by shelter and specific shelter promotions can be found at each web site. (Participating shelters below.)

The Highland Village Adoption Center is in the old Gap store location (4010 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77027). It will only be available for animal adoptions for the next two weekends. There is plenty of parking and it is a family friendly environment. There are opportunities for learning about different dog breeds as well as volunteering, fostering and donating. With two weeks left, Gerdes said, "We are hoping that someone will come forward -- with a store front or building that is maybe pending a renovation -- that could be our next temporary adoption center."

Other groups are also getting desperate and need help. Saint Bernard Rescue of Texas, located in Magnolia, takes in the gentle giants who have been surrendered, injured or unwanted. "We need foster homes to keep the Saints safe while we are trying to find their adoptive family. We need volunteers to help with fundraising, we need corporate sponsors and even dog food. Our General Medical Fund is depleted. Big dogs take big funds to rehabilitate," said Christine Banky, Director. She continued, "Please adopt a rescued dog -- the situation in the Houston area, with so many dogs having to be euthanized, is outrageous. Rescue groups alone cannot fix this problem. Please spay or neuter your pets, treat them humanely and help an animal rescue group wherever and whenever you can."

Operation Save a Lab has had to resort to sending dogs out of state. "There is an overabundance of labs in our area. The lab rescue groups are being overwhelmed -- instead of letting so many great family dogs be killed in Texas shelters, we are sending them to states on the east coast," said Laura McConnell, President. This group, headquartered in The Woodlands, needs fosters, donations and of course, people to adopt their labs.

Together all private and public rescue organizations are hoping that everyone who can, comes out this weekend to either adopt or foster, offer to volunteer or makes a generous donatation to help the homeless animals in the greater Houston area... let's all "Have a Heart for Homeless Animals."

The five "Have a Heart" shelters honoring the 2-for-1 adoptions include: *The Houston SPCA at 900 Portway Drive, Houston, TX 77024, 713-869-7722; *Citizens for Animal Protection at 11925 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX, 281-497-0591; *HCPHES Veterinary Public Health at 612 Canino, Houston, TX 77076, 281-999-3191; *the Houston Humane Society at 14700 Almeda Road, Houston, TX 77053, 713-433-6421; *and the Houston Department of Health and Human Services - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) at 3200 Carr, Houston, TX 77026, 713-238-9600. http://www. houstontx. gov/health/index. html (http://www. houstontx. gov/health/index. html) or www. friendsofbarc. org

Expert Drivers and Warehouse Selectors Compete at U. S. Foodservice's National Safety Championship

Expert Drivers and Warehouse Selectors Compete at U. S. Foodservice's National Safety Championship

60 Employees Gather in San Antonio for Competition Demonstrating Safety and Navigation Skills

San Antonio, TX (Vocus) August 21, 2010

Nearly 60 U. S. Foodservice drivers and warehouse selectors put their professional skills to the test August 20–22 with a series of knowledge, safety and driving challenges at the company’s fourth annual National Safety Championship in San Antonio, Texas.

The competitors represent the best of U. S. Foodservice’s 12,000 drivers and warehouse selectors from across the country. The competition tests knowledge, skill and safety. The tractor-trailer drivers, “pup” tractor-trailer drivers, forklift material handlers and pallet jack handlers first demonstrate industry and safety knowledge through a written exam before meeting to test their ability to safely navigate a specially designed obstacle course.

“Safety is a top priority for U. S. Foodservice, and that’s why this event is so important to us,” said Stuart Schuette, chief operating officer, U. S. Foodservice. “It is a great way to recognize our skilled employees and celebrate their talents and dedication.”

The competition takes place in San Antonio’s Freeman Coliseum. This year, participants compete using biodiesel trucks and fuel cell-powered forklifts, which are now used by many U. S. Foodservice locations to reduce carbon emissions. Winners of the 2010 U. S. Foodservice National Driving Competition will be honored during a banquet at the historic Empire Theater where they will receive plaques and cash prizes. The top drivers in each category are also eligible to attend the 2010 IFDA (International Foodservice Distributors Association) Food Industry Truck Driving Championship at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando from September 10-12.

“This competition not only recognizes the great efforts of drivers and warehouse selectors at U. S. Foodservice employees, but also encourages all of us to be the best in the industry,” said 2009 Pallet Jack Category Winner, Victor Orozco. “It makes me proud knowing that I’m one of the best at what I do.”

'Managing the security risk and regulatory risk of inappropriate access to applications and information continues to be a challenge for most organizations,' said Deepak Taneja, CEO of Aveksa. 'Aveksa 3 enables business, security and compliance teams to collaborate, automate manual tasks, and make access governance, risk and compliance operational.'

"Having tested Aveksa's technology across tens of thousands of users, millions of entitlements and several thousand roles, we are confident that it will provide the efficiency and scalability we need for enterprise-wide access governance at CIGNA.'

'While investments in identity management technologies have helped organizations better address regulatory demands, they still face significant challenges in how they collect and review user entitlements; define and maintain roles; and manage remediation for all of their compliance-relevant applications,' said Lori Rowland, analyst with the Burton Group. 'Obtaining a clear picture of user access to these applications requires extensive manual effort, and entitlement change requests and approvals are often difficult to track and audit. Organizations are seeking to automate these tasks and integrate role lifecycle management, entitlement management and identity auditing into a single solution.'

AP9 HomeWorksPlus Shares Cost-Saving Flavored Coffee Shortcuts

AP9 HomeWorksPlus Shares Cost-Saving Flavored Coffee Shortcuts

AP9 HomeWorksPlus, by Adaptive Marketing LLC, Tells How to Create Coffee Flavors for Breakfast, Entertaining or a Cold Afternoon.

Stamford, CONN (PRWEB) January 26, 2006

Most of us rely on that first cup of coffee before we begin our busy days, with many of us preferring an exciting flavored coffee just to spice up our daily routine. And our love of caffeine can make quite a dent in our wallets. But Adaptive Marketing LLC’s membership discount program AP9 HomeWorks Plus (http://www. homeworksplus-program. com/) reveals just how easy — and inexpensive — it is to make flavored coffee with just a few basic ingredients found in your pantry.

Short on time and ingredients? No problem. Making your own flavored coffee doesn’t necessarily require shopping for exotic ingredients at specialty stores. And if your home becomes an impromptu after-dinner gathering place, you need not worry about having high-end ingredients on hand to turn a typical pot of coffee into a tasty one.

If you’ve wanted to try flavored coffees but didn’t want to spend the money (and possibly be disappointed), AP9 HomeWorks Plus reports that making your own concoctions is the cost-effective answer. With these easy tips from AP9 HomeWorksPlus, you’ll have reliable, tasty, flavored coffee for every occasion.

For quick-and-easy flavored coffee, AP9 HomeWorksPlus (http://www. homeworksplus-program. com/) suggests trying the following enhancements:

-- Before brewing a pot of coffee, add some fresh, finely grated nutmeg, cinnamon or cocoa directly to the ground coffee. You can purchase these items in small quantities at your local supermarket; they store well for long periods of time.

-- For a tropical twist, try adding some orange zest to ground coffee before brewing.

-- Add a seasonal twist to ground coffee by adding a few dashes of pumpkin pie spice prior to brewing.

-- After brewing and pouring, add whipped cream and chocolate or caramel syrup to each serving. If you don’t have syrup, sprinkle shaved cocoa, cinnamon or even coconut.

-- Consider adding a flavorful liqueur to each mug. Peppermint, butterscotch, orange, chocolate and crème de menthe liqueurs will turn your ordinary coffee into a restaurant-style beverage. Top with whipped cream.

Saving money on home and garden products, home improvements, home entertainment and gifts is easy for members of AP9 HomeWorks Plus. Members simply log on to DealPass (http://www. dealpass. com/) for access to discounts of up to 20% at popular national and online retailers. Nashville, TN (PRWEB) November 21, 2006 -

Renderosity Digital Art Community and the One Million Masterpiece join forces to produce the world's largest artistic collaboration.

Online digital arts community Renderosity. com has today joined an international alliance that aims to produce the world's first truly global piece of collaborative art. Renderosity, one of the largest online communities for graphic artists, will be encouraging its 500,000 members to take part in the charity backed project and will remain a sponsor until the final unveiling event later next year.

Over 8,000 people from around the world have already joined the One Million Masterpiece since it launched on 14 July 2006, each claiming their own piece of one giant digital canvas. By using the Internet the intention is to build one, huge, unique picture which will be unveiled in London on 11 July 2007, World Population Day.

Five leading international humanitarian, health and environmental charities - Action Aid, Save The Children, Oxfam, World Cancer Relief Fund and WWF - are set to benefit from donations made by contributing artists.

The support of Renderosity is a key step in breaking the current world record of 25,297 contributors to a single artwork. Organizers anticipate breaking the record sometime between Christmas and the New Year.

Founder of the One Million Masterpiece, Paul Fisher, explains: "although this project is open to everyone, graphic artists are playing an important role because they can show other people what can be achieved and will help glue the whole thing together. Renderosity are such an important part of our team because they have access to thousands of computer literate artists and have the tools to reach out and get them involved".

Joining The One Million Masterpiece is free. Log-on to http://www. theonemillionmasterpiece. com and follow the simple instructions. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the international charities can do so securely through the site.

Newman’s Own, Inc.® Awards $100,000 to Those Who Make a Difference 10 Local Initiatives Part of USA WEEKEND Magazine’s ‘Make A Difference Day’

Newman's Own Awards $10,000 to 10 Local Volunteer Initiatives to help sustain their efforts or to donate to a project-related charity. Paul Newman, Newman's Own, Inc. and the Newman's Own Foundation have been leading supporters of Make A Difference Day since 1994. They have contributed $1.6 million to Make a Difference Day projects.

Westport, CT (Vocus) April 20, 2010

Newman’s Own, Inc. announced today the 10 winners of the Newman’s Own Award for best volunteer initiatives as part of the 2009 USA WEEKEND Magazine’s Make a Difference Day. The 10 award-winning and inspiring projects took place last Oct. 24 on USA WEEKEND Make a Difference Day, the nation’s largest single day of volunteering. The project organizers, as well as their inspiration for the initiatives, are profiled in the April 18th issue of USA WEEKEND. The story release coincides with the beginning of National Volunteer Week.

Since 1994, Paul Newman, Newman’s Own, Inc. and the Newman’s Own Foundation have been leading supporters of Make A Difference Day and together have contributed $1.6 million to Make A Difference Day projects.

Hundreds of grassroots volunteers have been recognized since 1994 with the Newman’s Own Make A Difference Day Award, each receiving $10,000 in seed money to sustain their efforts into the next year or to donate to a project-related charity.

"Make A Difference Day organizers and volunteers are an incredible resource at a time when volunteerism is most needed. Newman’s Own is very proud to help nourish their work,” says Tom Indoe, president and chief operating officer of Newman’s Own, Inc.

Since 1992, USA WEEKEND has conducted the nationwide initiative, Make A Difference Day, held every fourth Saturday in October, to encourage citizens of communities nationwide to help their neighbors. More than three million volunteers participated in the event last October. During the past 17 years, the day has empowered tens of millions of volunteers to bring about change in their own neighborhoods via their altruistic efforts.

County outdoes itself
Talk about a Rocky Mountain high. The 10th annual Make A Difference Day in Larimer County, Colo., actually was Make A Difference Week, with 4,450 people aiding 75 organizations and about 40,000 residents. “It was our biggest ever,” says Jami McMannes, volunteer center specialist for the United Way of Larimer County. Volunteers of all ages completed 150 projects countywide. Good deeds included raking leaves for the elderly, harvesting crops for the hungry, and clearing graffiti, trash and weeds. And at the Animal House shelter, 12 Vaught Frye Ripley Design employees reconditioned the grounds around the dog kennels.

McMannes says she believes the iffy economy drove the record-breaking turnout: “A lot of people can’t give money right now, but they can see that their time helps.”

Teen fishes to fight hunger

Before joining an after-school program at the Florence Fuller Child Development Center, Danny Tijerina, 10, had never heard of a fish warden. Now he wants to be one. Danny’s aspirations were sparked in a fishing class taught by volunteer Lucas Metropulos, 17. The Boca Raton teen started the course to teach needy kids the skills to feed themselves and their families. He also covers sea life and conservation. “I want them to understand the ocean’s resources and how they need to be protected,” he says. For Make A Difference Day, Lucas raised money to take his 20 students fishing on the Atlantic – a first for many. They were naturals, catching kingfish, red grouper and triggerfish. “Lucas is great. He teaches others and he has taught me,” Danny says.

Good deed nourishes souls

Olga El Sehamy first learned about Make A Difference Day in the Sept. 13, 2009, issue of USA WEEKEND, which featured a call to action from our nation’s mayors. “It was like a kick in the pants,” she says. Wanting to help the homeless, El Sehamy decided to cook hot meals for those living near Union Square in New York City, asking husband Mostafa and 19-year-old son Alex to pitch in.

On Oct. 23, 2009, Mostafa and Olga stayed up late making 50 chicken dinners. The next day, in the pouring rain, they loaded up the food and drove to the city to meet Alex and four friends from NYU to give it all to those in need. Olga described the day as “soul-satisfying” because, 22 years ago, she was assaulted by a vagrant: “Once I handed out the food and people were saying ‘thank you,’ I felt really proud of just not being afraid.”

Needy homeowners get help

Anna Trisvane, 79, of Providence, spent 40 years fostering nearly 40 children, giving them food, clothing and the rarest commodity —love. But it took a toll, and she was left with little time or cash for home repairs. On Make A Difference Day, Rebuilding Together Providence stepped in to paint, clean and replace faulty wiring in Trisvane’s home. Rebuilding Together, a national non-profit that helps low-income home owners, joined forces with Lowe’s to rejuvenate 35 homes across the country on Oct. 24. Lowe’s contributed $350,000 in grants and donated supplies and manpower; Rebuilding Together offered its vast community resources, including skilled volunteers.

Drive yields a mountain of food

The food pantry is not just full, it’s overflowing. Despite all odds. In February and March, Kentucky’s Franklin County Emergency Food Pantry usually struggles to make ends meet. “Once the holidays pass and winter comes on, demand picks up as giving falls off,” president Tom Utterack says. But this past winter, the pantry didn’t have to suffer through a seasonal drought. A Make A Difference Day drive organized by the state helped stockpile 20,000 extra pounds of food for that organization. Kentucky has arranged an annual food collection since 2001. Although state unemployment rates had hit a 26-year high of 10.5%, the drive tallied a whopping 123 tons of food — a 74% increase over 2008’s Make a Difference Day drive. Organizer Eileen Cackowski says the massive outpouring reflects the humanity of the Bluegrass State. “I see it in Kentucky all the time,” she says.

Fraternity pledges to do good

Think fraternity. Think partying? Think again. Community service means a lot to the members of Delta Sigma Pi collegiate business fraternity, who have made participation in Make A Difference Day a tradition. “As college students, we know we’re lucky,” says University of Pittsburgh chapter member Dan Kyung. “We feel like it’s our duty to help those who aren’t as fortunate.” Across the country, roughly 2,000 members from half the fraternity’s 195 chapters leapt to action Oct. 24. They took on more than 100 projects, ranging from helping special-needs children to raising money for the poor. Delta Sigma Pi began encouraging Make A Difference Day involvement more than a decade ago and lists it as one of the fraternity’s top three community service initiatives.

A town unites to honor a beloved teacher

High school teacher Dana Hungerford felt blessed just to be alive, to have “a chance from God” to make a difference. For 30 years, Hungerford shared his positive outlook with others while teaching math at Fairfield Community High School, where he was wildly popular with students and colleagues. And then, in September 2009, he died of heart failure at 53. By the time Hungerford’s memorial service was held five days later, 32 faculty members and 500 students had plans to honor him for Make A Difference Day. Their idea: Raise money for playground equipment for a city park. Their Oct. 24 began with a pancake breakfast and ended with a variety show at the school based on Hungerford’s favorite show, Saturday Night Live. More than 2,500 people — half of the town’s population — took part in various activities that raised $31,050. Leo French Park now will have new swings, slides and memorial benches.

“They couldn’t have come up with a better idea for honoring him,” says his widow, Kim Hungerford.

Probationers learn the joys of giving

Since 2005, Pattie Belongie has played Santa’s helper for Make A Difference Day, sewing doll blankets and collecting toys for underprivileged children. The first year, she did this to fulfill a community service sentence for driving while impaired. Now, she returns each year out of love.

"It's so fulfilling to be a part of this — to be able to share joy and love with little kids who don’t understand why they don’t have much,” she says. On Oct. 24, Belongie, along with 19 volunteers and 40 people sentenced to community service, passed out Christmas stockings at four stores, asking shoppers to fill them for needy kids and troops overseas. The group collected enough donations to send 400 stuffed stockings to service members. On Dec. 5, the volunteers held a Christmas party to distribute the remainder of the goodies to underprivileged children.

Corrections coordinator Denise Formolo created this volunteer program to give probationers a chance to do something creative. She never dreamed they’d return to participate on their own. “It changes their whole attitude when they see what a caring community they live in,” she says.

Community gives hope (and flip-flops) to Haiti
News of the massive earthquake that struck Haiti in January jarred young parishioners at St. Andrew Church in Colchester, many of whom had spent last fall collecting donations on Make A Difference Day to help the impoverished nation. “I can’t believe this happened to them,” says sixth-grader Elizabeth Kowalsky, 11. The church has had a long-standing relationship with Haiti: Its high school youth group has an annual “rockathon” to benefit the Haitian Health Foundation, based in nearby Norwich. This year, the middle-schoolers got in on the act. “It felt like the right thing to do,” Elizabeth says. The kids voted to collect shoes and supplies for Haiti. As word of their “Flip-Flops for Education” drive spread, the effort snowballed. St. Mary-St. Joseph School students in Willimantic collected money; soccer teams and local businesses donated sup plies; and classes at William J. Johnston Middle School in Colchester set out collection boxes. By day’s end on Oct. 24, the St. Andrew kids had collected 2,000 items — from flip-flops to school supplies. They also raised $1,900 to serve educational needs and buy 10 goats, a source of food and income. “This has been a big help,” says Jerry Lowney, Haitian Health Foundation founder. “The misery never seems to end for these poorest neighbors.”

Caregivers receive a special thank you
Small gestures mean a lot —more than we may realize. Months after Charlene Reeder of Laurens, S. C., received a gift bag to lift her spirits while caring for her ill husband, she still appreciates it. “The bag just made me feel happy, and now it still helps,” she says, referring to one particular item, a book on grief that has been useful since her husband died of leukemia. Reeder was one of 50 caregivers to receive goodies from Georgia Fowler of Fountain Inn, S. C., and her extended family on Make A Difference Day. Fowler’s 50th birthday inspired her action: “I didn’t want to have a selfish birthday.” With the help of brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren, she collected items to include in the bags. Then, on Oct. 24, the group assembled the bags and gave them to caregivers in three counties. Fowler chose caregivers because her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, cared for others be fore she fell ill. “She was a caregiver before the word was invented,” Fowler says.

Turning Business Savvy To the Challenge of a Dying Planet

Turning Business Savvy To the Challenge of a Dying Planet

"Every American head of household needs to know exactly how many trees are needed to provide oxygen for their family and then plant a few more. It's amazing how few trees per family it actually takes. It is a simple solution, which, multiplied by the number of families in the US alone, could begin to reverse the trend of overloading our atmosphere with greenhouse gases," declares long-time San Fernando Valley resident, Barbara Wiseman.

(PRWEB) June 10, 2005

"Every American head of household needs to know exactly how many trees are needed to provide oxygen for their family and then plant a few more. It's amazing how few trees per family it actually takes. It is a simple solution, which, multiplied by the number of families in the US alone, could begin to reverse the trend of overloading our atmosphere with greenhouse gases," declares long-time San Fernando Valley resident, Barbara Wiseman. Following her recent appointment as International President of a South African-based organization, The Earth Organization (EO), Wiseman provided the keynote address at EOÂ’s first US Environmental Conference held in Los Angeles last month.

"As a successful business consultant accustomed to turning around failing operations, I took a look at the current environmental statistics on planet Earth and realized that something had to be done about it - and fast," said Wiseman. "With over 50 dead zones in our oceans (massive areas which will support no life), with tens of thousands of plant and animal species going extinct every year, with billions of tons of toxins spewed annually into the air we breath, with deforestation depleting oxygen sources, with the quality of food we eat becoming less and less nutritious, the population is heading towards an unhealthy state indeed. There was really no other choice."

Wiseman, as a result of years of marketing experience, says she first studied the many surveys conducted by The Earth Organization. They gave adequate evidence that there was in the United States a very strong interest in doing something to turn things around environmentally, but that desire was accompanied by the anxiety of not knowing what they themselves could or should specifically do. "The Gallup Poll alone showed that 50-60% of those surveyed are concerned about the environment "a great deal", and that another 20% think about it "a fair amount". When you have approximately 70 percent of the population with serious concerns about a current issue, that is huge," says Wiseman.

The Earth Organization was founded by internationally acclaimed

Environmentalist, conservationist and explorer, Lawrence Anthony who lives with his wife on his private game reserve in South Africa. On returning from an extraordinary act of courage in rescuing the animals in the Baghdad Zoo early during the Iraqi War, Anthony met with Wiseman in London.

Impressed by the success of her management consulting company, which has worked with government leaders in Russia, Mexico and Haiti to improve various conditions, her personal service in a refugee resettlement facility, and capped by seven successful years hosting and/producing a national radio show called "Building a Better World," Anthony invited her to join him in creating a new international environmental organization.

Since then they have been building a large membership base and quickly taken on a variety of projects, "primarily with the purpose of raising the public's awareness of how human survival is braided together with the survival of all of life on earth," says Wiseman. "Getting educated and getting active are an important part of being an Earth Organization member. So we are currently working on a variety of projects: from saving endangered Black and White Rhinos in South Africa, to creating an historic eco-tourism alliance with 6 Zulu tribes, to creating a global tree-planting campaign, to raising awareness in large groups and organizations in the Los Angeles area on the vital importance of reusing and recycling."

The Earth Organization's first US conference, hosted by EO in a glass-ceilinged conference facility provided by the Human Rights Department of the Los Angeles Church of Scientology, brought together ecology experts and advocates. The conference addressed both endangered species and the increasingly toxic environment. Dr. Gary Herbertson, former Chief Executive Officer of Earth Day International and an associate of 2004 Nobel Peace Prize awardee, Wangari Mathai, spoke about the United Nations Earth Charter. Licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Michael Chill, spoke on the reclaiming of natural animal habitats for a balanced environment. Toxins as they affect the individual was the subject of a presentation by Dr. Megan Shields, a board certified family physician and expert on the eradication of toxins in the body. Dr. Carl Smith, Vice President and Senior Editor for the Foundation for Advancement in Science and Education, delved into dangerous disposal tactics of toxic materials, and Dr. Mark Gold, Executive Director of Heal the Bay, an environmental organization focused on increasing water quality of the southern California beaches, discussed the crises occurring in the ecology of the oceans of earth, especially the Santa Monica Bay, and effective strides that have been made over the past several years to handle marine pollution. The focus of these panels was on what each individual person can do to improve the environmental quality of life around him or her.

During her keynote speech, Wiseman referenced some of the writings of humanitarian and conservationist L. Ron Hubbard. Through his research Hubbard identified the dynamic principle of existence: the urge to survive, and broke this urge down into eight separate human thrusts toward survival -- through self, as a family, through groups, Mankind, all living things, the physical universe, spirit and an awareness of infinity or a Supreme Being. Mr. Hubbard wrote: "It is important to remember that these dynamics comprise life. They do not operate singularly without interaction with the other dynamics. Life is a group effort. None survive alone." "Those last words -- 'none survive alone,'" says Wiseman, have become the overriding theme that drives The Earth Organization forward, because it is a fundamental realization that enables people to grab hold of the idea that environmental issues are absolutely integral to their own day-to-day lives."

Rounding out the day, the first Environmental Crusader award was presented by Emmy Award winning actress and spokesperson for the Earth Organization, Michelle Stafford (Star of "The Young and the Restless") to Deb Baumann, Executive Director and Environmental Justice Specialist of the Tujunga Watershed Council for outstanding advocacy. And at the close of the conference, all attendees were invited to participate in the planting of a young tree, a "child tree"-- to symbolize the care and nourishing that the earth is in need of, if it and we are to survive. The five-foot, Majestic Beauty Indian Hawthorne was provided by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power as part of their program which offers trees at no charge to property owners who wish to lower temperatures in their homes by providing additional shade on their property (visit ladwp. com). AccuQuote Recognizes Life Insurance Awareness Month

AccuQuote Recognizes Life Insurance Awareness Month

AccuQuote, a leader in providing term life insurance quotes to people across the United States, recognizes Life Insurance Awareness Month. The multi-carrier life insurance quoting and brokerage firm encourages consumers to use the month of September as an opportunity to review their life insurance needs.

Wheeling, IL (Vocus) September 1, 2010

AccuQuote, a leader in providing term life insurance quotes to people across the United States, recognizes life insurance awareness month. The multi-carrier life insurance quoting and brokerage firm encourages consumers to use the month of September as an opportunity to review their life insurance needs.

“Let’s face it, our financial security isn’t what it used to be,” says Byron Udell, founder and CEO of AccuQuote. “Many of our homes have decreased in value, and with it have decreased or wiped out any equity we may have had. Our investments are worth less than they were just a couple of years ago, and we’re earning a fraction of a percent of interest in our savings.”

Even through an economic downturn, there is one source of financial security that still stands strong – life insurance. Life insurance serves as the foundation of a family’s overall financial security. If consumers do not already have life insurance, September is the perfect time of year to obtain coverage. Currently, term life insurance rates are near record lows. For instance, a healthy 40 year old male can obtain a $500,000 policy for less than $35 a month.

Send Your Fat Packing, Go Fatpacking

Send Your Fat Packing, Go Fatpacking

This Spring, 6-8 people will go on a 2 week adventure vacation, eat all they want and still lose weight. It sounds like an outright lie, but not with Fatpacking. Fatpacking is body composition change via backpacking. It's unique, it's exercise, it's a wilderness vacation.

(PRWEB) December 23, 2004

From March 19 – April 3, 2004, 6-8 nature lovers (maybe you) who are 15-50 pounds overweight will backpack over 100 miles of the Arizona Trail east of Phoenix. The hike will study the effects of backpacking on weight, body composition, respiration, pulse, blood pressure, and a host of other health related metrics.

Participants will not be restricted to any austere diet or eating plan. Fatpacking believes that eating heartily is important in keeping your body at peak performance level for the rigors of backpacking. We postulate that weight loss will still occur, even if participants eat all they want.

Hikers will also reap a host of ancillary exercise induced benefits. These include kicking caffeine, stopping smoking, reducing stress level, and lowering blood pressure, not to mention fun.

This trip will be led by Wilderness First Responder Steve Silberberg, who holds a degree from MIT.

Anyone who is interested in participating in this trip (hiking) or chronicling it (Article / TV / Film), please contact Fatpacking as soon as possible. Spots are available but space is limited.

Datazoom's 'Research Smarts' Provides Insights for Healthcare Research in Rarer Diseases

Datazoom's 'Research Smarts' Provides Insights for Healthcare Research in Rarer Diseases

While Heart Disease, Cancer and HIV remain the most prominently known diseases, there are several other diseases which are equally debilitating, although affecting a significantly smaller population. In several rarer diseases, the challenge is to obtain quality information about the disease as there is only a limited amount of patient data available at one location. Web based Technology is changing all this. Healthcare researchers specialized in these diseases, can now collaborate across cities, states, provinces and countries to equip themselves with quality information. Information about prevention, control and treatment can be collected and disseminated using web technologies across the globe, while not compromising the security and privacy of patient information. Datazoom Solutions based out of Mississauga, Ontario, has created a software product and platform that provides the security, robustness and performance to facilitate clinical research into rarer diseases.

Mississauga, Ontario (PRWEB) July 9, 2008

Healthcare research in rarer diseases has taken a promising turn with a wider adoption of web-based technology products such as "Research Smarts" by Datazoom Solutions Inc (http://www. datazoomsolutions. com).

The challenge with rarer diseases is that it is difficult to draw any trends based on quality information, as the sample size at an individual location is not large enough. At the same time most of the research resources are focused on cancers, heart disease and HIV, which affect a significantly larger population. For pharmaceutical companies, who are profit-making entities, there is more data availability and bottomline profit in inventing drugs for the prominent diseases. Researchers specialized in diseases such as Lupus, Hepatitis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Scleroderma and other relatively obscure diseases have found it difficult to provide quality data to pharmaceutical companies for obtaining their assistance in coming out with drugs for these diseases.

Technology is changing all this. Datazoom Solutions "Research Smarts" allows clinical researchers to collaborate across distinct geographies to collect and disseminate quality information about these rarer diseases. The solution based on the industry-leading Oracle database and Microsoft's ASP. Net front-end, provides different mechanisms for collecting quality data from different locations. Research Smarts provides a highly intuitive user interface to facilitate quick and easy data entry while still ensuring data quality. Clinical practitioners and researchers are extremely busy people and as such special attention has been provided to speed and robustness, allowing them to save precious seconds. Cost-effectiveness of such a solution is also a key issue as funds are not available for rarer diseases in the same ratio.

Even more noteworthy is the fact that some of Datazoom's projects have patients entering their information in a self-service mode, using a secure URL, to keep their clinical practitioners aware of their state of health. This saves time for everyone while ensuring quality information is being made available for patient care and research in a timely fashion. The software platform also links in laboratory information as well as X-Rays and biologic samples.

"An integrated database is helping us to make faster and more informed research decisions. Datazoom has been particularly helpful in adapting the product for our research", says Dr. Virginia Steen of Georgetown University, a renowned rheumatologist and specialist in Scleroderma.

"The data quality controls embedded in the Datazoom application and its excellent performance facilitate easy and seamless data extraction and analysis while enhancing data quality and integrity" says Dr. David Spence of Robarts Research Institute who uses a modified version of Datazoom's product.

Several other research initiatives in rarer skin diseases, cancers, arthritis conditions and others are using Datazoom's Research Smarts platform for quality insights into these diseases. Datazoom also provides a localized version of their software called "Clinical Smarts" which allows clinical practitioners for managing patient data while at the same time contributing that data for centralized analysis. All this occurs while conforming to the legal rules and regulations regarding privacy and confidentiality of data, such as HIPAA.

The product uses the latest security and encryption mechanisms for storing sensitive research data. Datazoom has provided a self-service, real-time data extraction and intelligent analytics for the researchers and an easy integration path for statistical analysis tools. Datazoom's secure web-based application can be launched from the hospital intranet, independent clinics, and even remotely from patient's homes. Site level and user level data access controls are provided throughout the application. Data validation and immediate feedback is incorporated for data entry users using soft and hard ranges for relevant fields.

THE FIRST MOTHER TO ILLUMINATE LIFE DURING HER SON'S SPINAL INJURY AND RECOVERY; New Book Proclaimed "Must Reading" by Prominent Spinal Cord Injury Rehab MD for Families of Injured and Health Professionals

More than 200,000 people in the United States and an estimated two million people worldwide, live with a spinal cord injury. Among the 11,000 new injuries reported each year (one every 49 minutes), the average age will be 32, and more than 80% of them will be men. My brother Scott experienced a diving accident in 1991 at the age of 28, and since my mother couldn't find a book written by a parent to help her understand the difficulties ahead, she eventually gathered her strength and detailed her own experiences to help those facing a similar injury to one they love. THE GHOST BEHIND THE WHEELCHAIR is believed to be the first book written by a parent of an adult child suffering from a spinal cord injury, and this press release includes an endorsement from one of the foremost world authorities on spinal injury rehab which refers to the book as being "like a support group in a package," and "must reading" for families of the spinal injured and the health professionals working with them.

(PRWEB) April 11, 2003

While taking a break from feeding her 28-year-old son during the early days of his spinal cord injury, Lila Ridings Darnell asked one of the attending doctors if other mothers sometimes had to spend time away. She was told sheÂ’d be surprised how many came once... then never returned.

Lila’s home was 1,000 miles away from the hospitals where her son Scott endured the first stages of his rehabilitation, but while she did take brief respites – to attend support groups and keep her life on track in full accord with Scott’s wishes – she returned to her son’s side whenever possible to provide vital support... and she also chronicled her full experiences to serve as illumination in an otherwise dark world for others facing a similar injury to one they love.

"Sudden paralysis is a circumstance no one wishes to get intimately familiar with, but such tragedies do unfortunately occur," Lila explained. "In my own experience, I've learned that a mother will search desperately for the tools of education whenever they're required, but when my son was involved in a life-changing accident, I could find no shared experiences written of by another parent.

"After living through the experience of the accident's aftermath and the many months of rehabilitation," she continued, "I was eventually able to sit down and put words onto paper in the hope that another mother or father would one day find my experience helpful during their own times of learning and searching."

The result of that inspired undertaking, THE GHOST BEHIND THE WHEELCHAIR is believed to be the first book written by a parent of an adult child suffering from a spinal cord injury (adult males make up the vast majority of the 11,000 SCI accidents which happen each year). An open and passionate record of a motherÂ’s journey in coming to terms with this life-altering twist of fate, the book has been endorsed by Marca Sipski, MD, whose credentials include being Associate Professor and Interim Chair for the University of Miami School of MedicineÂ’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.

"Lila Darnell provides a heart wrenching account of her experiences as the parent of a son affected by a spinal cord injury," Dr. Sipski said. "In a first person account she describes the frustrations, fears and triumphs associated with her journey into the world of the spinal cord injured. Like a support group in a package, this book will provide insight for familes of the spinal injured and the health professionals that work with them. It should definitely be considered 'must' reading."

Scott Darnell also provided these thoughts on his mother and the book. "My mother dealt with my situation as a tower of strength, and then wrote with courage and conviction what perhaps only a mother is willing to relive solely for the sake of others. For anyone facing such a tragedy for a loved one, I expect that THE GHOST BEHIND THE WHEELCHAIR may produce both comfort and hope from the perspective of a loving mother."

Facts regarding spinal cord injuries (Source: Spinal Cord Injury Information Network):

. Between 183,000 and 230,000 people in the United States, and approximately 2 million people worldwide, live with a SCI.

. Each year 11,000 new injuries are reported.

. Every 49 minutes a new injury occurs.

. Average age of injury - 32 years.

. Close to 82% of people with SCI are male.

This book is available in paperback and eBook format to consumers through 1stBooks Publishing (www.1stbooks. com/bookview/11060 (http://www.1stbooks. com/bookview/11060)) and through Amazon. com, and to book resellers through wholesaler Ingram Book Company (ISBN: 1403315892).
