Kevin Stirtz, a former business owner and nonprofit executive, has been named the new executive director of Kinship, Inc.

Kevin Stirtz, a former business owner and nonprofit executive, has been named the new executive director of Kinship, Inc.

“We feel that Kevin is an ideal fit for the position,” Kinship Inc. Board President Dan Johnson said. “He has both a background in nonprofit work and business along with a keen interest in mentoring.”

Stirtz will take over the helm of one of Minnesota's largest youth mentoring programs. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Kinship, Inc. has affiliates that serve 75 cities in seven states in the Upper Midwest. Currently the organization mentors 1800 kids every week.

“This is an exciting time to be involved in youth mentoring,” said Stirtz. “Across our nation we're seeing people from all corners of society get involved. From President Bush to the president of the local chamber of commerce, people are seeing the incredible power youth mentoring has to address many social challenges.”

Kinship has recently gained national recognition for their mentoring program. In October, one of Kinship's kids, Michaela Huberty, met with First Lady Laura Bush when she was asked to speak at the at the White House Conference on Helping America's Youth in Washington, DC.

Part of the reason Stirtz was hired is to lead Kinship, Inc. into a period of growth. Since there are many kids on waiting lists for mentors, Kinship, Inc. plans to substantially increase their capacity over the next few years.

Stirtz is leading the charge by bringing the youth mentoring “story” to the business community.

“It makes sense to partner with businesses because, in the long term, our goals are the same,” he said. “Successful businesses need healthy employees and healthy communities. Effective youth mentoring helps achieve both.”

Organizations like Kinship have found that in addition to helping kids, youth mentoring has many positive benefits for parents, employers, schools and communities in general.

This exantion couldn't come at a better time with the slashing of after school and summer programs from school and the huge number of camps that are closing down. What are kids to do with fewer and fewer places to go but stay home with their electonics. Aside from the decline in academic performance and the psychological effects, so much time spent playing video games, watching TV and surfing the net can have major physical effects. Some studies show a whopping 32% of today’s youth are overweight (heart. org) partly as a result of so much time spent sitting around in front of a screen. Kids who spend more time playing outside are much less likely to be obese or overweight. Many kids get early signs of tendinitis and carpel tunnel syndrome, in some cases skeletal problems, high blood pressure and increased heart rates have resulted. The benefits of outdoor play are endless. It helps kids live healthier lives, build social skills and forge healthy relationships; it makes them more adventurous and independent. “After camp my relationship with my son improved exponentially, he was more social and excited to do new things. In an effort to measure interest in utilizing fitness and spa facilities while traveling, Coyle Hospitality Group surveyed 1482 frequent travelers, representing consumers throughout the United States. The survey also queried what features were most important in hotel or affiliate fitness facilities; spa spending trends and the likelihood of different segments of travelers to utilize spa services. In an effort to measure interest in utilizing fitness and spa facilities while traveling, Coyle Hospitality Group surveyed 1482 frequent travelers, representing consumers throughout the United States. The survey also queried what features were most important in hotel or affiliate fitness facilities; spa spending trends and the likelihood of different segments of travelers to utilize spa services.

Detailed results have been broken down into the following sections: Hotel Fitness Facility Usage; Fitness Facility Preferences; Spa Spending Trends; and Hotel Spa Usage.

Hotel Fitness Facility Usage

Over 50% of the travelers indicated at least some likelihood of utilizing the fitness facilities, while only 27% indicated that they were unlikely or very unlikely to use them. The data suggests that if the average guestroom brings two guests to the property, there will be a significant interest per room in the hotel's fitness offerings. Therefore, hotels are wise to make sure their fitness offerings are both compelling and easily identified during the booking process.

While the actual usage numbers are open for debate, it is clear that most travelers want a viable exercise option while traveling.

Fitness Facility Preferences

CHG also surveyed the level of importance of various fitness equipment and features including such things as cleanliness, space, variety of cardiovascular equipment, technology, refreshment availability, presence of free weights, presence of staff and class availability. The two defining preferences in a hotel fitness facility are cleanliness and space. 91% cited cleanliness as important or very important and 78% cited having ample personal space.

Guests understandably expect a clean environment to exercise in and they don't want to be crowded while working out. Since the guest can draw conclusions about space availability and cleanliness visually before the workout, the hotel/spa with limited space or poor upkeep is likely to negatively affect even the casual observer or occasional facility user.

Also important to note, is the expectation of media in fitness centers, with over 50% of those surveyed citing it as important or very important. The savvy traveler is now used to seeing media such as flat screen televisions or music options in fitness facilities and it is becoming increasingly important to them. The availability of refreshments was also important or very important to 50% of the people surveyed, showing that the availability of water or other refreshments is not essential but is a simple way to aid in the comfort of guests. 

The hotel guestroom that has been converted to a gym is automatically at a space disadvantage. Hotels wishing to retain health conscious guests will have to set aside valuable space, maintain it, and give as many up-to-date options as they can.

Stephanie Perrone, Vice President of Business Development at CHG adds, "It stands to reason that travelers want the same up - to-date equipment they have at their local health club. They also do not want to wait for equipment to become available. If they have set aside time to work out while traveling, it will only upset them if they are unable to do so."

Spa Spending Trends

Spa spending and awareness still continues to be on the rise. CHG asked travelers how likely they were to spend on spa over the upcoming year. The traveling public continues to show a strong inclination to at least consider spas as part of their travel spending. Over half of those surveyed intend to keep their spa purchases consistent while nearly 30% say that they will likely spend more in the upcoming year. A combined 12% indicate they will likely spend less.

CHG's spa survey in 2005 clearly showed a general consumer trend of increased purchases in spas. Spa treatments and services are increasingly becoming a discretionary buy instead of an indulgent or impulse purchase. Perrone states, "Traveling consumers are continuously realizing the health benefits of incorporating spa into their busy lifestyles, thus increasing their likelihood to spend in these areas."

Hotel Spa Usage

Coyle Hospitality Group also looked at the difference in likelihood of utilizing the spa during both business and leisure travel. Leisure travelers are much more inclined to provide spa revenue than business travelers. What is very encouraging though is that only 18% of the leisure travelers surveyed were unlikely or very unlikely to at least consider spas as part of their discretionary leisure purchase. More than half of the leisure travelers surveyed were at least considering utilizing the services.

The business traveler is much less likely with only a combined 27% considering a spa purchase when traveling. The data also shows that there are a large number of 'fence-sitters' with 27% of business travelers and 21% of leisure travelers saying they are neutral about a spa purchase.

In summary, when coupling the data above with shopper data gleaned from over 5,000 CHG hotel mystery shops, it is clear that many operators are not seizing this immense marketing opportunity. CHG data shows that during Reservation Calls, hotels with onsite spas services mentioned these services only 38%. Capture at the point of sale was even more meager with spa services and availability being mentioned only 12% of the time during check-in. The active and consistent promotion of the property's fitness facility or affiliate fitness facility varies and guests are often left merely with the information that the property they are visiting has a fitness facility.

It is clear that hotels with compelling fitness and spa services have a distinct advantage over those hotels who fail to clearly articulate their offerings. Spas should increasingly seek the traveling public as a source of new customers, with the leisure traveler offering the best potential.

Whether hotels outsource or provide options in-house, cleanliness, availability of individual space, and a variety of up-to-date cardio equipment are primary drivers of satisfaction. Travelers want and expect what they get at home.

Skills for Health (SfH) - the sector skills council for the public, private and voluntary healthcare sectors - is calling on everyone involved in healthcare education to make their views known during a three-month consultation process around a new Quality Assurance Framework for Healthcare Education.

Skills for Health (SfH) -- the sector skills council for the public, private and voluntary healthcare sectors -- is calling on everyone involved in healthcare education to make their views known during a three-month consultation process around a new Quality Assurance Framework for Healthcare Education.

Entitled EQuIP (Enhancing Quality in Partnership), the framework has been developed by SfH and its partners to support the national standard contract for healthcare education, which was published by the Department of Health in England in 2006.

The aim of the framework is to ensure that in excess of £650 million spent each year on healthcare learning programmes is used to best effect. With 75 Higher Education Institutions and more than 300 partner healthcare placement providers delivering over 2,000 healthcare education programmes, the need for simplification is clear.

Janine Ling, Head of Quality and Learning at NHS Education South Central (NESC) said:

"We need a framework that draws on current best practices to ensure that what healthcare professionals are learning, how they are learning, and where they are learning is in line with the requirements of a patient-led health sector.

"These factors can have a major impact on the successful delivery of services and the quality of care received by patients and other service users. For this reason, it is vital that the standard of healthcare education is continuously improved."

Christina Pond, Executive Director of Standards and Qualifications at Skills for Health, added:

"At any one time, there are around 75,000 learners on pre-registration programmes alone, and as much as half of the learning time of these programmes is spent in healthcare workplace settings.

"Some excellent and innovative work is already taking place in healthcare education, but the numbers and complexities of learning programmes merit a move towards a standard framework; one that is easily recognised and understood by all involved.

"Such a framework will be a useful tool for Strategic Health Authorities, and other healthcare education commissioners and their partners. But it can only be successfully created through collaboration - which is why we are inviting everyone involved in healthcare education to give us their views."

The consultation period will run from the 28th September to the end of December 2007. During this time workshops will also be taking place in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Newcastle and Peterborough for those seeking more detail about the framework. In the week when the Laaken European summit is likely to establish a Constitutional Convention to examine power sharing between Brussels, the Member States and the Regions, the IWA’s latest Assembly Monitoring report reveals that Rhodri Morgan has joined the cause of 45 legislative Regions in the EU. In an unpublicised message sent to a meeting of these Regions in Liège he declared:

"I am convinced that Regions with legislative powers have a vital part to play in bringing the work of the EU closer to its citizens over the most exciting two to three years in European Union constitutional evolution."

The message was an endorsment of the Flanders Declaration by European Regions with legislative powers seeking more influence within the institutions of the European Union. Although Wales did not sign the Declaration when it was issued last May, it is a signatory to a successor Declaration agreed by the 45 Regions which attended the Conference of Presidents of Regions with Legislative Powers, at Liège in mid November.

The Flanders Declaration - signed by Flanders, Wallonia, Catalunya, Bavaria, North Rhein Westphalia, Salzburg and Scotland - urged that "the role and setting of the Regions in the European policy-making process and institutional framework" be added to the themes debated at the 2004 Inter-Governmental conference on the EUÂ’s constitution.

The Liège conference was attended by the Belgian Federal President Guy Verhofstadt who, as the current President of the European Council, undertook to ensure that the views of the legislative Regions would be considered at this week’s Laaken European summit in Brussels. Together with Bavaria, Catalunya, North Rhein Westphalia, Piedmont, Salzburg, Tirol, Tuscany, Flanders, and Wallonia, Wales participated in the Steering Group that organised the Liège event. Des Clifford, the Assembly Government’s representative in Brussels who attended the Steering Group meetings, said:

"There's nothing particularly transparent about the way this grouping has grown up and arrangements for the future will be put onto a more organised footing with an agreed number of Regions representing each eligible Member State, for example four from Germany, two from Belgium and so on. Wales and Scotland will certainly be involved from the UK."

The illegal purchase of prescription drugs online has been a hot topic of late. But media outlets and the public should be careful not to blame legitimate Internet pharmacies for the problem.

Actually, the husband in this CNN story died after taking drugs without a prescription -- drugs that he apparently knew he shouldn't have been taking. Sadly, because he was addicted to painkillers, he engaged in criminal activity -- and found rogue pharmacies to enable this activity. As it happened, he bought these drugs via the Internet, rather than from a friend, a co-worker, or a stranger on a street corner.

The problem of individuals -- especially teenagers -- illegally purchasing prescription drugs online has gotten a lot of attention in recent months. But you can't blame the Internet for these illegal activities, any more than you can blame the highway for DUIs. And you can't lump legitimate, licensed pharmacies in with the rogue operations, either.

We would be better served to focus our media attention -- and law enforcement efforts -- on stopping the criminals, rather than tarring all Internet pharmacies with the same broad brush. Unfortunately, what it means to be a "criminal" in the world of Internet pharmacies has been a source of confusion, both for the media and the public.

When we take a step back, it's easy to see why people are confused. Currently, there are two separate public policy issues surrounding Internet pharmacies:

1. The Problem of Rogue Pharmacies.

Unquestionably, too many rogue pharmacies are out there operating with impunity. This is evident from the e-mail inboxes of millions of Americans, whose spam folders are replete with solicitations to buy Viagra and Xanax. Chasing these illegal operations down has been a very tough task for the FDA. It's like policing anything over the Internet -- difficult.

2. The Politics Surrounding Canadian Drug Reimportation.

Consumer reimportation of medications from Canada is heavily favored by the U. S. public. Presidential candidates John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama all support it. They know, as the public knows, that a licensed Canadian pharmacy is just as safe as a licensed U. S. pharmacy.

Because of the enormous influence of Big Pharma, however, the Bush Administration and the FDA have done all they can to block reimportation.

Fortunately, the FDA gave up on the idea of confiscating consumer purchases. But what they have done instead is confuse consumers -- by telling the public that ordering your Lipitor from a licensed Canadian pharmacy is illegal and somehow not as safe as buying it from a licensed U. S. pharmacy.

In its rhetoric, the FDA associates licensed, long-established, perfectly safe Canadian pharmacies with the rogue operations that engage in criminal activities. I believe, as do many others, that this is an intentional deception to appease Big Pharma. Whatever the motive, it's factually inaccurate.

It has also led the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to list legitimate pharmacies alongside bad ones in its recently publicized list of 79 online pharmacies to avoid, announced in a press release last week. The legitimate pharmacies are on the list simply because they are headquartered in Canada.

How sad that is, and what a mess for consumers.

“AA only works for approximately 5% of the population,” says Melanie, citing AA’s own internal surveys on the efficacy of their program, as well as many government and independent studies. “This means 95% of those needing help need to know of alternatives to 12-step programs. The National Institute on Drug Abuse seems to agree, stating: “No single treatment program is right for everybody. Matching the treatment program to each individual’s needs is critical to success.”

“AA didn’t work for me, but it does work for some, including my dad who has now had 15 years of continued sobriety. I am not anti-AA, but I want people to understand that substance abuse treatment cannot be a one-size-fit-all solution. It’s to be as diverse and varied as the people who seek help.”

What most Americans believe about drinking problems and their treatment is substantially inaccurate. Many providers deliberately resist change because they have too much of an attachment to their own ideas of what should work, claiming, “I know it worked for me, and I’m sure that it can work for everyone else as long as they just do what I say.” Abstinence is not the only way to sobriety. Individualizing treatment is crucial. Chronic “relapsers” can actually be harmed by 12-step programs that preach, “You are powerless to stop.”

“It is finally time to stop living in the dark ages of recovery, educate people about all of their choices and alternatives that are out there. Maybe we will start making a dent in the alcohol and drug use problem that millions are facing each day instead of continuing to perpetual it,” says Melanie. “People are needlessly suffering every minute of every day,” she continues, “and they are dying, from overdosing and suicide, and these people could have been helped IF they were given the information they so desperately needed. It is not right, nor is it ethical for treatment programs to only offer ONE option, whether it’s a person’s first attempt at sobriety or 20th. Don’t people with substance abuse issues have the right to know about all of their options, just like anyone else with an ailment? Of course they do. But why is no one blinking twice that they are not?”

A workshop designed to assist young men and women to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship is being offered for youth between the ages of 12-18.

Heart of the Family is presenting the teen dating violence prevention workshop on Saturday, October 18, 2003, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church, Flint, Michigan.

After completing this workshop, participants will be better able to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship and the elements that make for healthy interpersonal relationships.

Flint Mayor James W Rutherford will open the program speaking on the vital role community centers play in character building and social skills development.

Parent orientation will follow with an introductio! n of workshop facilitators Jim & Elsa Croucher, founders of Citizens Against Domestic Violence, Middletown, Ohio.

The Croucher's whose 18-year old daughter Tina was murdered by her ex-boyfriend have spoken to 6,000 high school and college students nationally.

Research has shown an alarming trend of acceptance for some form of violence in their interpersonal relationships.

A survey conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee reported that students found it acceptable for violence to be used, "if a girl yelled at her boyfriend or insulted him in front of his friends." The students surveyed also felt a girl deserved to be shoved or slapped by her boyfriend if she was seen talking to another boy.

A Harvard study published in the August 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that teen dating violence often leads to other risky behaviors such as substance abuse, promiscuity, unhealthy weight control, pr! egnancy and suicide.

These are the behaviors the workshop seeks to change.

Heart of the Family is a non-profit organization committed to empowering abused women and children exposed to family violence.

Michael F Craig founded the organization following the loss of his daughter Nichole who died from childbirth complications ten days after being beaten by her husband Mustafah Muhammad who then roamed the defensive backfield for the Indianapolis Colts. Years earlier he loss his only son Brian who died from a gunshot wound to the head during a dispute with his girlfriend.

Craig travels widely sharing the pain of his losses and is often called upon for media interviews.

The impact on the lives of the youth participating in the workshop will be immediate. They will leave with a better understanding of the cycle of abuse that is destroying our families, devastating our communities, and contributing to the violence spilling over into our school classrooms.

Planned Parenthood, Arnold Schwarzenegger Sued by High Ranking Planned Parenthood Ex-Employee for Systemic Racism & Financial Mismanagement

The Pro-Family Law Center of Southern California has filed a suit against Planned Parenthood and the Governor of California seeking a judicial order that would stop funding to Planned Parenthood because of rampant discrimination and financial misrepresentation.

A suit naming the Governor of the State of California, CaliforniaÂ’s State Treasurer, Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles (PPLA), and others, was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday afternoon (Andrew Jones v. Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, et al., LASC Case No. BC327377). The blockbuster suit was filed by Andrew Jones, the former Project Manager of the Community Services/Education Department of PPLA. Mr. Jones worked for PPLA for several years and is African-American.

The verified complaint seeks recovery for unlawful termination, racial and sexual harassment, and a failure to pay overtime. Jones’ suit alleges that PPLA regularly allowed overt racism and sexism to infect its facilities in early 2004. Among other serious allegations, it is alleged that PPLA did nothing when one of its employees was referred to as a “nigger.” Additionally, the suit, filed under penalty of perjury, alleges that PPLA consistently portrayed African-American males as being irresponsible and that male employees were regularly referred to as “dickheads” and other offensive terms by the white female management.

Sworn affidavits by other female PPLA staff, supporting the allegations of the complaint, were also filed Tuesday. One swore, “There was a sense that any employee who was not a white female was going to be carefully watched. . . . [T]here was a strong anti-male bias at PPLA.” Another affidavit refers to, “a significant anti-male bias.” Attorneys for Jones indicate that this is just one of several upcoming suits by high level PPLA employees who were fired for whistle-blowing or complaining of racism.

Jones’ lawsuit also seeks an immediate court order requiring the Governor of the State of California, the State Treasurer, and the Director of California’s Health & Human Services Agency to stop funding PPLA due to its racist practices and failure to disclose serious failures in its accounting systems and qualifications for state funding. In part, Plaintiff relies on a late-2003 single audit finding by the certified public accounting firm of RBZ LLC that PPLA “did not comply with requirements regarding reporting that are applicable to its Family Planning Services program.”

Additionally, the complaint alleges that it was only after Jones questioned the financial practices of PPLA that he was fired. According to the complaint, he was given a stellar employee review right before his termination. Pursuant to California law, contractors/grantees/recipients such as PPLA are to refrain from discrimination in order to qualify for taxpayer-funded programs. PPLA is subject to rigorous reporting requirements and must be able to demonstrate financial viability on state loan programs. The suit alleges that PPLA failed, and continues to fail, on all fronts. In May 2004, Plaintiff “placed Defendant PPLA on notice of “accounting miscues, angry patients, and disgruntled gatekeepers,” according to the complaint.

According to Richard D. Ackerman, Jones’ lead attorney, “The State of California simply cannot afford to continue funding PPLA’s programs, especially when California is looking at cutting funding to school children, teachers, emergency health care, and other areas that are far more important than PPLA’s elective activities. There are plenty of other agencies that can offer the same services as PPLA without misrepresenting their financial condition, and without engaging in racism and sexism in the workplace. This is no time to be giving special interests such as PPLA preferential treatment over those that legitimately need money, do not engage in discriminatory practices, and are honest about their financial condition.”

Finally, the suit makes mention of the fact that PPLA concocted a scheme to place an abortion facility in South Central Los Angeles without being honest about its purpose. It is alleged that Jones and other employees were instructed to market the facility to the African-American community as being a non-abortion facility. It appears that PPLA was well aware of the fact that LA African-Americans do not want their unborn children eliminated by abortion, and knew that they could not get community support if they came into town promoting a depletion of the LA African-American community’s future generations. The complaint alleges, “Plaintiff refused to engage in PPLA promotional practices that were intended to deceive the African-American community in South Los Angeles. . . Plaintiff, an African-American, was not comfortable being forced to misrepresent facts to other similarly situated persons.”

Ackerman summed up this case by saying, “This is the beginning of a new era of accountability for California’s special interests. Unscrupulous organizations cannot come to the trough expecting to be fed if they are not willing to abide by the same laws that govern legitimately needy organizations. PPLA, unlike California schools, teachers, hospitals, and state clinics, is supported by generous financial contributions from Hollywood celebrities, wealthy corporations, and huge estates. I sincerely hope that Angelides and Schwarzenegger will protect the public in these dire financial times. This is no time for political agendas to get in the way of protecting taxpayers from waste and fraud. I might also point out that racism and sexism, in any form, are unacceptable in a civilized society. Given Planned Parenthood’s rampant promotion of diversity and tolerance, I think it would be best if they demonstrated some necessary integrity by voluntarily abstaining from taxpayer funding.”
