Kinship, Inc. Names New Executive Director, Charts Ambitious Growth Course

Kinship, Inc. Names New Executive Director, Charts Ambitious Growth Course

Kevin Stirtz, a former business owner and nonprofit executive, has been named the new executive director of Kinship, Inc.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) November 19, 2005

Kevin Stirtz, a former business owner and nonprofit executive, has been named the new executive director of Kinship, Inc.

“We feel that Kevin is an ideal fit for the position,” Kinship Inc. Board President Dan Johnson said. “He has both a background in nonprofit work and business along with a keen interest in mentoring.”

Stirtz will take over the helm of one of Minnesota's largest youth mentoring programs. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Kinship, Inc. has affiliates that serve 75 cities in seven states in the Upper Midwest. Currently the organization mentors 1800 kids every week.

“This is an exciting time to be involved in youth mentoring,” said Stirtz. “Across our nation we're seeing people from all corners of society get involved. From President Bush to the president of the local chamber of commerce, people are seeing the incredible power youth mentoring has to address many social challenges.”

Kinship has recently gained national recognition for their mentoring program. In October, one of Kinship's kids, Michaela Huberty, met with First Lady Laura Bush when she was asked to speak at the at the White House Conference on Helping America's Youth in Washington, DC.

Part of the reason Stirtz was hired is to lead Kinship, Inc. into a period of growth. Since there are many kids on waiting lists for mentors, Kinship, Inc. plans to substantially increase their capacity over the next few years.

Stirtz is leading the charge by bringing the youth mentoring “story” to the business community.

“It makes sense to partner with businesses because, in the long term, our goals are the same,” he said. “Successful businesses need healthy employees and healthy communities. Effective youth mentoring helps achieve both.”

Organizations like Kinship have found that in addition to helping kids, youth mentoring has many positive benefits for parents, employers, schools and communities in general.

“It's simple. When kids do better, we all do better,” said Stirtz.

Stirtz is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and lives with his wife in Burnsville, MN

Kinship, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit headquartered in Minneapolis. Learn more about Kinship at www. KinshipInc. org or call 612-588-4655 ext 255. Kevin Stirtz can be reached directly at 952-212-4681.

Jusuru Releases Haiti Relief Video

Jusuru Releases Haiti Relief Video

Jusuru International, Inc. has just released a video on the current status of the international relief effort in response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last January.

Anaheim, CA. (Vocus) July 26, 2010

Jusuru International, Inc. (http://www. jusuru. com) has just released a video on the current status of the international relief effort in response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last January. The video includes footage taken during a recent trip by Jusuru executives to help distribute supplies that Jusuru had contributed to the relief effort. These included the entire existing inventory of Jusuru oxygenated water (a purified bottled water product), as well as sandals, clothing, basic toiletries, first aid kits and other emergency supplies. The video concludes with an appeal to other potential corporate donors to get involved because the ongoing relief effort desperately needs additional support.

Jusuru’s product is Jusuru Life Blend™, a liquid nutritional supplement, that has lead to very early success in the company’s growth and objectives. Jusuru was formed as a socially responsible business, in which its corporate charter includes a commitment to giving a portion of its profits back to the community to support worthy causes. The unexpected tragedy moved Jusuru to take action although very early in its company launch.

Though Jusuru acted fast, its shipment to Haiti was delayed by logistical and bureaucratic problems, but when it finally arrived, Asma Ishaq, Jusuru’s President, and David Ciemny, its Vice President of Business Development, were on hand to help distribute the supplies. “Although it has been six months since the earthquake hit, it’s important for others to know that the situation is more dire now than ever before. We’re raising awareness not only about the earthquake’s effect on the people of Haiti, but also to ensure that their plight does not go forgotten,” said Asma Ishaq. The documentary, Jusuru hopes, will do just that.

Jusuru’s video was put together to serve as a platform for an appeal to the US and international business community to join Jusuru in contributing to the ongoing needs of the earthquake survivors. A secondary objective of the video is to serve as a report to Jusuru’s own network of independent representatives and customers, whose commitment is the source of what Jusuru hopes will be an ongoing series of contributions to different worthy causes, as called for in its corporate charter. The video may be found at http://www. youtube. com/jusuruinternational (http://www. youtube. com/jusuruinternational).

Jusuru International’s flagship product, Jusuru Life Blend™, is a cutting edge nutraceutical that promotes healthy aging, active joints and younger looking skin. SCCE and HCCA Social Networks Now Open to All Compliance and Ethics Professionals

SCCE and HCCA Social Networks Now Open to All Compliance and Ethics Professionals

Free participation available in global compliance and ethics online forum.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) December 7, 2008

The Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) and the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) announced today the associations are making their Social Network sites available to all compliance and ethics professionals beginning December 4, 2008. Previously, to access the social network sites and participate in the online discussions, compliance and ethics professionals had to be members of either the SCCE or HCCA.

"Now, we're opening up the conversation to the entire ethics and compliance community at no cost," said Roy Snell, SCCE/HCCA CEO. "This will not only allow new people to participate, it helps our existing members by providing them with access to the wisdom of a larger pool of compliance and ethics professionals."

The Compliance and Ethics Social Network was established by SCCE and HCCA this past fall. More than 500 compliance and ethics professionals have already joined in. Over 30 separate groups have developed online discussions on topics including HIPAA, Social Responsibility, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and business ethics.

"The U. S. Sentencing Guidelines and common sense says that it is important for compliance and ethics professionals to be able to communicate with each other," explains Snell. "By making this valuable resource available broadly we help further that goal, support our members and fulfill our mission of championing ethical practice and compliance standards in all organizations and providing the necessary resources for compliance and ethics professionals and others who share these principles."

How it works
Compliance and ethics professionals who sign up may join numerous discussions about critical compliance-related topics. There's even a conversation just for chief ethics and compliance officers.

These sites will enable users to connect with others in the profession year round. Those that sign up for this important professional tool, are able to expand their professional network of peers rather than wait until the next industry meeting to connect directly.

The sites are designed to make it easy for users to find other ethics and compliance professionals who share the same challenges, whether it's dealing with the complexities of FCPA or a general ethics issue. Asking questions of peers - do you have a policy that covers x, what's a best practice for y - is easy, and giving an answer is just as simple.

To encourage greater participation, the HCCA and SCCE are providing an incentive. The first 500 compliance and ethics professionals that join one of the discussion groups beginning December 4, 2008 will benefit from the career advice in Building a Career in Compliance and Ethics, regularly a $34.95 value. During these uncertain economic times, this book can be an invaluable asset to compliance and professionals' efforts to maximize their career opportunities. It is filled with great ideas for everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals.

"Sign up now and start learning what your peers are thinking and doing. And start taking your program and career to the next level," adds Snell.

Camp Expands Just When Kids Need Them The Most; Budget Cuts and Electronics Lead Kids to a Lazy Life

Camp Expands Just When Kids Need Them The Most; Budget Cuts and Electronics Lead Kids to a Lazy Life

The youth of today is becoming lazy and suffering from a lack of outside fun. They spend more time sitting in front of electronics than ever. We need to get our kids outside and into nature weather its going to an adventure camp or joining a sport team. While many schools are cutting after schools programs and other camps are closing down, Long Lake Camp is expanding.

Dobbs Ferry, NY (PRWEB) October 6, 2010

In an age of 900 TV channels, 1,000’s of video games and millions of websites our children are chained to screens and monitors. Many say personal depression increases in direct proportion to web-time and video games make teens more aggressive, anti-social and can lower academic achievement. Increasing evidence shows the enormous benefits of nature on children’s psychological and physiological well being; it reduces stress and improves concentration and creativity. Our kids need to get outside and socialize. Summer camps, after school programs and sport teams are a great start. Lee Farrelly, director of Long Lake Adventure Camp says some of his campers show up to camp uncomfortable socializing with others, tightly wound and easily frustrated. After a full day of fun and adventure they are happy, surrounded by new friends and relaxed. Long Lake Camp For The Arts has bin around since 1963 and is now expanding and starting a new adventure program. This new program will get kids excited about nature and interested in more than video games, surfing the web and TV. Time spent outside enjoying nature enables children to learn more effectively, improves a child’s ability to concentrate and may reduce ADHD symptoms significantly.

This exantion couldn't come at a better time with the slashing of after school and summer programs from school and the huge number of camps that are closing down. What are kids to do with fewer and fewer places to go but stay home with their electonics. Aside from the decline in academic performance and the psychological effects, so much time spent playing video games, watching TV and surfing the net can have major physical effects. Some studies show a whopping 32% of today’s youth are overweight (heart. org) partly as a result of so much time spent sitting around in front of a screen. Kids who spend more time playing outside are much less likely to be obese or overweight. Many kids get early signs of tendinitis and carpel tunnel syndrome, in some cases skeletal problems, high blood pressure and increased heart rates have resulted. The benefits of outdoor play are endless. It helps kids live healthier lives, build social skills and forge healthy relationships; it makes them more adventurous and independent. “After camp my relationship with my son improved exponentially, he was more social and excited to do new things. At home he spent most of his time in his room but at camp he hiked to the top of a mountain, played sports, went water skiing and mountain biking and had the best time of his life,” The parent of a 12-year old boy attending Long Lake Adventure Camp

Long Lake Adventure Camp is a summer program for boys and girls 8 to 16 in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. Campers are surrounded by nature and embark on different adventures every single day. From mountain climbing to white water rafting to a ropes course high up in the trees our campers have a summer they will never forget. Everyday there is something new awaiting them inclding trips to amusment parks, all kinds of sports, kayak trips, hikes, paintball games etc. The expantion of the camp felt like the right thing to do says Lee Farrelly (director) Kids programs are being cancelled left and right and they dont deserve to suffer because of budget cuts. http://www. longlakeadventurecamp. com.

Coyle Hospitality 2006 Group Survey Finds Spa and Fitness Facilities Favorites for Frequent Travelers

Coyle Hospitality 2006 Group Survey Finds Spa and Fitness Facilities Favorites for Frequent Travelers

In an effort to measure interest in utilizing fitness and spa facilities while traveling, Coyle Hospitality Group surveyed 1482 frequent travelers, representing consumers throughout the United States. The survey also queried what features were most important in hotel or affiliate fitness facilities; spa spending trends and the likelihood of different segments of travelers to utilize spa services. Detailed results have been broken down into the following sections: Hotel Fitness Facility Usage; Fitness Facility Preferences; Spa Spending Trends; and Hotel Spa Usage.

New York (PRWEB) November 2, 2006

In an effort to measure interest in utilizing fitness and spa facilities while traveling, Coyle Hospitality Group surveyed 1482 frequent travelers, representing consumers throughout the United States. The survey also queried what features were most important in hotel or affiliate fitness facilities; spa spending trends and the likelihood of different segments of travelers to utilize spa services.

Detailed results have been broken down into the following sections: Hotel Fitness Facility Usage; Fitness Facility Preferences; Spa Spending Trends; and Hotel Spa Usage.

Hotel Fitness Facility Usage

Over 50% of the travelers indicated at least some likelihood of utilizing the fitness facilities, while only 27% indicated that they were unlikely or very unlikely to use them. The data suggests that if the average guestroom brings two guests to the property, there will be a significant interest per room in the hotel's fitness offerings. Therefore, hotels are wise to make sure their fitness offerings are both compelling and easily identified during the booking process.

While the actual usage numbers are open for debate, it is clear that most travelers want a viable exercise option while traveling.

Fitness Facility Preferences

CHG also surveyed the level of importance of various fitness equipment and features including such things as cleanliness, space, variety of cardiovascular equipment, technology, refreshment availability, presence of free weights, presence of staff and class availability. The two defining preferences in a hotel fitness facility are cleanliness and space. 91% cited cleanliness as important or very important and 78% cited having ample personal space.

Guests understandably expect a clean environment to exercise in and they don't want to be crowded while working out. Since the guest can draw conclusions about space availability and cleanliness visually before the workout, the hotel/spa with limited space or poor upkeep is likely to negatively affect even the casual observer or occasional facility user.

Also important to note, is the expectation of media in fitness centers, with over 50% of those surveyed citing it as important or very important. The savvy traveler is now used to seeing media such as flat screen televisions or music options in fitness facilities and it is becoming increasingly important to them. The availability of refreshments was also important or very important to 50% of the people surveyed, showing that the availability of water or other refreshments is not essential but is a simple way to aid in the comfort of guests.

The hotel guestroom that has been converted to a gym is automatically at a space disadvantage. Hotels wishing to retain health conscious guests will have to set aside valuable space, maintain it, and give as many up-to-date options as they can.

Stephanie Perrone, Vice President of Business Development at CHG adds, "It stands to reason that travelers want the same up - to-date equipment they have at their local health club. They also do not want to wait for equipment to become available. If they have set aside time to work out while traveling, it will only upset them if they are unable to do so."

Spa Spending Trends

Spa spending and awareness still continues to be on the rise. CHG asked travelers how likely they were to spend on spa over the upcoming year. The traveling public continues to show a strong inclination to at least consider spas as part of their travel spending. Over half of those surveyed intend to keep their spa purchases consistent while nearly 30% say that they will likely spend more in the upcoming year. A combined 12% indicate they will likely spend less.

CHG's spa survey in 2005 clearly showed a general consumer trend of increased purchases in spas. Spa treatments and services are increasingly becoming a discretionary buy instead of an indulgent or impulse purchase. Perrone states, "Traveling consumers are continuously realizing the health benefits of incorporating spa into their busy lifestyles, thus increasing their likelihood to spend in these areas."

Hotel Spa Usage

Coyle Hospitality Group also looked at the difference in likelihood of utilizing the spa during both business and leisure travel. Leisure travelers are much more inclined to provide spa revenue than business travelers. What is very encouraging though is that only 18% of the leisure travelers surveyed were unlikely or very unlikely to at least consider spas as part of their discretionary leisure purchase. More than half of the leisure travelers surveyed were at least considering utilizing the services.

The business traveler is much less likely with only a combined 27% considering a spa purchase when traveling. The data also shows that there are a large number of 'fence-sitters' with 27% of business travelers and 21% of leisure travelers saying they are neutral about a spa purchase.

In summary, when coupling the data above with shopper data gleaned from over 5,000 CHG hotel mystery shops, it is clear that many operators are not seizing this immense marketing opportunity. CHG data shows that during Reservation Calls, hotels with onsite spas services mentioned these services only 38%. Capture at the point of sale was even more meager with spa services and availability being mentioned only 12% of the time during check-in. The active and consistent promotion of the property's fitness facility or affiliate fitness facility varies and guests are often left merely with the information that the property they are visiting has a fitness facility.

It is clear that hotels with compelling fitness and spa services have a distinct advantage over those hotels who fail to clearly articulate their offerings. Spas should increasingly seek the traveling public as a source of new customers, with the leisure traveler offering the best potential.

Whether hotels outsource or provide options in-house, cleanliness, availability of individual space, and a variety of up-to-date cardio equipment are primary drivers of satisfaction. Travelers want and expect what they get at home.

Consultation Recognises the Importance of Healthcare Education

Consultation Recognises the Importance of Healthcare Education

Skills for Health (SfH) - the sector skills council for the public, private and voluntary healthcare sectors - is calling on everyone involved in healthcare education to make their views known during a three-month consultation process around a new Quality Assurance Framework for Healthcare Education.

(PRWEB) September 8, 2007

Skills for Health (SfH) -- the sector skills council for the public, private and voluntary healthcare sectors -- is calling on everyone involved in healthcare education to make their views known during a three-month consultation process around a new Quality Assurance Framework for Healthcare Education.

Entitled EQuIP (Enhancing Quality in Partnership), the framework has been developed by SfH and its partners to support the national standard contract for healthcare education, which was published by the Department of Health in England in 2006.

The aim of the framework is to ensure that in excess of £650 million spent each year on healthcare learning programmes is used to best effect. With 75 Higher Education Institutions and more than 300 partner healthcare placement providers delivering over 2,000 healthcare education programmes, the need for simplification is clear.

Janine Ling, Head of Quality and Learning at NHS Education South Central (NESC) said:

"We need a framework that draws on current best practices to ensure that what healthcare professionals are learning, how they are learning, and where they are learning is in line with the requirements of a patient-led health sector.

"These factors can have a major impact on the successful delivery of services and the quality of care received by patients and other service users. For this reason, it is vital that the standard of healthcare education is continuously improved."

Christina Pond, Executive Director of Standards and Qualifications at Skills for Health, added:

"At any one time, there are around 75,000 learners on pre-registration programmes alone, and as much as half of the learning time of these programmes is spent in healthcare workplace settings.

"Some excellent and innovative work is already taking place in healthcare education, but the numbers and complexities of learning programmes merit a move towards a standard framework; one that is easily recognised and understood by all involved.

"Such a framework will be a useful tool for Strategic Health Authorities, and other healthcare education commissioners and their partners. But it can only be successfully created through collaboration - which is why we are inviting everyone involved in healthcare education to give us their views."

The consultation period will run from the 28th September to the end of December 2007. During this time workshops will also be taking place in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Newcastle and Peterborough for those seeking more detail about the framework. Attendance is free of charge. To reserve a place email qaconferencebookings @ skillsforhealth. org. uk or contact Jordana Fournillier on 020 7716 7024.

All interested parties can respond by clicking on the EQuIP consultation button on the Skills for Health homepage (www. skillsforhealth. org. uk) or by visiting http://www. skillsforhealth. org. uk/EQUIPconsultation (http://www. skillsforhealth. org. uk/EQUIPconsultation).
Ends

HCG Diet Direct Urges Potential Dieters to Calculate their Body Mass Before Starting a Rapid Weight Loss Diet

HCG Diet Direct urges potential dieters to calculate their body mass index before starting a rapid weight loss diet.

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus) August 15, 2010

HCG Diet Direct (http://www. hcgdietdirect. com) urges potential dieters to calculate their body mass index before starting a rapid weight loss diet (https://www. hcgdietdirect. com/buy-hcg-diet/). According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases 66% of adult Americans are overweight or obese. Accessing BMI calculators can provide potential dieters with the information they need in order to determine the severity of potential health consequences.

Health benefits of achieving a healthy weight (http://www. hcgdietdirect. com/hcg-diet-news/hcg-rapid-weight-loss. html) include: (According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases)

1. Better control of cholesterol
2. Better control of blood pressure
3. Better control of blood sugar
4. Decrease in risk for heart disease
5. Decrease in risk for diabetes
6. Decrease in risk for arthritis
7. Decrease in risk for some cancers

To access body mass index calculators free of charge online visit The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. The process is easy. Step one is to enter your height and weight using standard metric measures. Step two is to click compute. The convenient online BMI calculator will compute your personal body mass index.

Dr. J. Ronald Willis of HCG Diet Direct responded, “I think having all the relevant information before starting any rapid weight loss diet is important because it helps dieters stay focused. They know what they are focusing for; they are aware of the consequences of dieting failure and they are more likely to stick with it.”

Homeopathic HCG weight loss formula is a rapid weight loss diet that can be used to achieve drastic weight loss without invasive procedures. The HCG drops are taken three times daily and paired with a careful eating plan. There are no known HCG side effects. The results of the standard 26-30 day program can provide an average of 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss per day.

World Chess Network and Chess Live Merge into New ICC Service

World Chess Network and Chess Live Merge into New ICC Service

The Internet Chess Club ("ICC"), the world's premier online subscription chess service, has today announced the acquisition of two competitive online chess services, World Chess Network and Chess Live. The two services will be merged together to form a new service, separate from ICC, to be called World Chess Live.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) May 16, 2007

The Internet Chess Club ("ICC"), the world's premier online subscription chess service, has today announced the acquisition of two competitive online chess services, World Chess Network, from Master Games International, and Chess Live, from GamesParlor. The two services will be merged together to form a new service, separate from ICC, to be called World Chess Live.

Founded in 1997 and with the long time support of one of the world's most respected patrons of chess, Dato' Tan Chin Nam, the World Chess Network has developed a friendly, loyal community of chess players from around the world who enjoy playing and talking together as well as participating in a variety of fun and educational chess activities. Chess Live, positioned as the family-friendly online chess community, was created in 2000 as the online chess service of the U. S. Chess Federation, but has since expanded to welcome chess players of all countries.

In contrast to these other online chess services, ICC has traditionally been the first choice of chess professionals and those who strive for the top ranks, including among its members more than half of the world's chess Grandmasters. "We recognize," says Joel Berez, President and CEO of ICC, "that both the World Chess Network and Chess Live communities have cultures and traditions that are much more similar to each other than they are to the ICC community. Therefore keeping them together in a new service with an atmosphere similar to what they already enjoy makes more sense than forcing them to move to ICC and will hopefully be better appreciated."

In keeping with the spirit of moving both communities with minimal disruption to the members, the new World Chess Live administrative staff will be headed by Julie Trottier, long time Chief Administrator of the World Chess Network, assisted by Chris Fitzgerald, who held a similar position on Chess Live, as well as other administrators drawn from both services. According to Martin Grund, ICC's Vice President of Online Operations, "Julie and Chris have both done a remarkable job of maintaining happy and healthy communities with limited resources and I'm honored to welcome them into the ICC family."

World Chess Live, while separate from ICC, will enjoy the benefit of much shared content and chess activities, such as:
The most feature-rich online chess software platform on the Internet.

ICC Chess. FM audio and video regular shows, plus live coverage of major chess events around the world.

An extensive library of chess educational material and special interest programs.

Online events hosted by the world's top players, such as a recent charity chess simul conducted by #1 rated GM Vishy Anand.

Founded in 1995 as one of the first premium gaming sites on the Internet, today ICC is firmly established as the premier online chess service, with more members, more Grandmasters, more volunteers, and more loyalty from its members than any other classical game service on the Internet. More than 35,000 paying members from all over the world regularly enjoy playing casual or tournament chess games against each other; watching others play, including hundreds of titled chess masters; attending online lectures, classes, and special events; or simply socializing with fellow chess enthusiasts in a club house that's always open.

Assembly Government Joins Euro Regions with Legislative Powers

Assembly Government Joins Euro Regions with Legislative Powers

Press Release summarising the Institute of Welsh Affairs' new publication "Coalition Creaks Over Health". This is the latest report in their Monitoring the National Assembly series.

(PRWEB) December 20, 2001

In the week when the Laaken European summit is likely to establish a Constitutional Convention to examine power sharing between Brussels, the Member States and the Regions, the IWA’s latest Assembly Monitoring report reveals that Rhodri Morgan has joined the cause of 45 legislative Regions in the EU. In an unpublicised message sent to a meeting of these Regions in Liège he declared:

"I am convinced that Regions with legislative powers have a vital part to play in bringing the work of the EU closer to its citizens over the most exciting two to three years in European Union constitutional evolution."

The message was an endorsment of the Flanders Declaration by European Regions with legislative powers seeking more influence within the institutions of the European Union. Although Wales did not sign the Declaration when it was issued last May, it is a signatory to a successor Declaration agreed by the 45 Regions which attended the Conference of Presidents of Regions with Legislative Powers, at Liège in mid November.

The Flanders Declaration - signed by Flanders, Wallonia, Catalunya, Bavaria, North Rhein Westphalia, Salzburg and Scotland - urged that "the role and setting of the Regions in the European policy-making process and institutional framework" be added to the themes debated at the 2004 Inter-Governmental conference on the EUÂ’s constitution.

The Liège conference was attended by the Belgian Federal President Guy Verhofstadt who, as the current President of the European Council, undertook to ensure that the views of the legislative Regions would be considered at this week’s Laaken European summit in Brussels. Together with Bavaria, Catalunya, North Rhein Westphalia, Piedmont, Salzburg, Tirol, Tuscany, Flanders, and Wallonia, Wales participated in the Steering Group that organised the Liège event. Des Clifford, the Assembly Government’s representative in Brussels who attended the Steering Group meetings, said:

"There's nothing particularly transparent about the way this grouping has grown up and arrangements for the future will be put onto a more organised footing with an agreed number of Regions representing each eligible Member State, for example four from Germany, two from Belgium and so on. Wales and Scotland will certainly be involved from the UK."

A New Twist on Back To School: Using Feng Shui to Help Kids Make Better Grades

A New Twist on Back To School: Using Feng Shui to Help Kids Make Better Grades

We know what to expect if we give our kids a lot of sugar or caffeine. They will bounce of the walls. If the temperature in the house is 90 or 100 degrees, tempers will easily flare. These are normal responses to negative stimulation that most parents know about. But what most parents don’t know is that there is negative stimulation in the home that affects their child‘s behavior and even their grades.

(PRWEB) August 17, 2005

Feng Shui Diva! Robyn Bentley, a feng shui consultant and author of "Creating A Haven: Simple Steps For A Healthy And Nurturing Home," has three tips to make your childÂ’s room more positive for academic success.

We know what to expect if we give our kids a lot of sugar or caffeine. They will bounce of the walls. If the temperature in the house is 90 or 100 degrees, tempers will easily flare. These are normal responses to negative stimulation that most parents know about. But what most parents don’t know is that there is negative stimulation in the home that affects their children‘s behavior and even their grades.

Feng Shui Diva says:

1- Point Your ChildÂ’s Bed In A Positive Sleeping Direction.

The bed is the place where your child spends the greatest amount of time in one spot and the sleeping direction has a big impact on them. Sleeping your child with the crown of their head pointed towards their WISDOM direction will help them perform better in school. Find your child’s best sleeping directions at www. fengshuidiva. com in the “Feng Shui for Kids” section.

2- De-clutter To Keep The Energy From Getting Stuck.

Energy naturally flows through rooms but when it encounters clutter it gets “stuck”. Stuck energy can cause procrastination, lack of motivation, and even depression. Clutter will make it harder for your child to reach their goals and it is also distracting which makes it difficult for students to focus on their studies.

3- Limit Your ChildÂ’s Exposure To EMFs

EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) are harsh energies emitted by electronic devices. They decrease the bodyÂ’s production of melatonin, the hormone which helps prevent sleep problems, moodiness, anger and depression. Arrange furniture so that your childÂ’s body is 3 to 5 feet away from TVs, computers, and other electronic appliances.

There are no bad children, only bad behavior. And our environment affects our behavior. Feng Shui is the 4,000 year-old Chinese practice of arranging our living space to be in harmony with the earth's energy or "chi" so that our life is in balance. Use these simple techniques to create more balance in your home and send your child back to school this year “feng shui’d” for better grades.

Feng Shui Diva! Robyn Bentley is a feng shui consultant and author of "Creating A Haven: Simple Steps For A Healthy And Nurturing Home." She is a frequent guest on radio stations around the world and offers many free feng shui tips for the home and office on her web site www. fengshuidiva. com.

The Internet is Not the Cause of Prescription Drug Abuse

The Internet is Not the Cause of Prescription Drug Abuse

The illegal purchase of prescription drugs online has been a hot topic of late. But media outlets and the public should be careful not to blame legitimate Internet pharmacies for the problem.

San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) May 27, 2008

Cary Byrd, founder and president of eDrugSearch. com, the popular prescription drug shopping site and social network, today released the following statement addressing recent media coverage of the dangers of Internet pharmacies:

Just as there have been past hysterias blaming the Internet for sexual predators, pornography, political polarization, celebrity obsession and seemingly every other malady facing our nation, it now seems the news media has targeted online pharmacies as the Internet Danger of the Moment. The most recent example I came across was a story on CNN. com, headlined, "Widow: My husband died from online drugs." (http://www. cnn. com/2008/HEALTH/05/21/online. drugs/index. html)

Actually, the husband in this CNN story died after taking drugs without a prescription -- drugs that he apparently knew he shouldn't have been taking. Sadly, because he was addicted to painkillers, he engaged in criminal activity -- and found rogue pharmacies to enable this activity. As it happened, he bought these drugs via the Internet, rather than from a friend, a co-worker, or a stranger on a street corner.

The problem of individuals -- especially teenagers -- illegally purchasing prescription drugs online has gotten a lot of attention in recent months. But you can't blame the Internet for these illegal activities, any more than you can blame the highway for DUIs. And you can't lump legitimate, licensed pharmacies in with the rogue operations, either.

We would be better served to focus our media attention -- and law enforcement efforts -- on stopping the criminals, rather than tarring all Internet pharmacies with the same broad brush. Unfortunately, what it means to be a "criminal" in the world of Internet pharmacies has been a source of confusion, both for the media and the public.

When we take a step back, it's easy to see why people are confused. Currently, there are two separate public policy issues surrounding Internet pharmacies:

1. The Problem of Rogue Pharmacies.

Unquestionably, too many rogue pharmacies are out there operating with impunity. This is evident from the e-mail inboxes of millions of Americans, whose spam folders are replete with solicitations to buy Viagra and Xanax. Chasing these illegal operations down has been a very tough task for the FDA. It's like policing anything over the Internet -- difficult.

2. The Politics Surrounding Canadian Drug Reimportation.

Consumer reimportation of medications from Canada is heavily favored by the U. S. public. Presidential candidates John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama all support it. They know, as the public knows, that a licensed Canadian pharmacy is just as safe as a licensed U. S. pharmacy.

Because of the enormous influence of Big Pharma, however, the Bush Administration and the FDA have done all they can to block reimportation.

Fortunately, the FDA gave up on the idea of confiscating consumer purchases. But what they have done instead is confuse consumers -- by telling the public that ordering your Lipitor from a licensed Canadian pharmacy is illegal and somehow not as safe as buying it from a licensed U. S. pharmacy.

In its rhetoric, the FDA associates licensed, long-established, perfectly safe Canadian pharmacies with the rogue operations that engage in criminal activities. I believe, as do many others, that this is an intentional deception to appease Big Pharma. Whatever the motive, it's factually inaccurate.

It has also led the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to list legitimate pharmacies alongside bad ones in its recently publicized list of 79 online pharmacies to avoid, announced in a press release last week. The legitimate pharmacies are on the list simply because they are headquartered in Canada.

How sad that is, and what a mess for consumers.

EDrugSearch. com has stepped into the fray to clear up the confusion and offer a safe haven for consumers shopping for prescription drugs online. We suggest you use our list of approved pharmacies (http://www. edrugsearch. com/pharmacy-directory/), rather than the NABP's, in choosing an online pharmacy (http://www. edrugsearch. com/edsblog/five-tips-for-choosing-an-online-pharmacy/).

The pharmacies on our list have been through a 10-step approval process (http://www. edrugsearch. com/online-pharmacy-requirements/). They are licensed in their home countries and have been accredited by third-party sources. We prescreen them for safety, so you can focus on saving money -- which is the reason millions of Americans are shopping online in the first place.

Buying prescription drugs online (http://www. edrugsearch. com) is a good thing. It's convenient. It's private. And it's less expensive, because it gives consumers the necessary tools to comparison shop, both domestically and internationally.

So for those of you who have been frightened by recent media coverage, let me assure you of this: As long as you're shopping from pharmacies that you know are safe, and you're not a criminal yourself, you'll be fine online.

Consumers can register for a free membership with eDrugSearch. com at the following url: http://www. edrugsearch. com/register (http://www. edrugsearch. com/register).

About eDrugSearch. com

Based in San Antonio, eDrugSearch. com is the Health 2.0 social network and comparison shopping site (http://www. edrugsearch. com) for U. S. consumers seeking prescription medications from prescreened Canadian and other international pharmacies. eDrugSearch. com's social network empowers members to rate and review pharmacies, share experiences with other members, and more. eDrugSearch. com president and founder Cary Byrd is an impassioned advocate for reform of U. S. prescription-drug law. For more information, visit the company's Web site at www. eDrugSearch. com or its blog at www. edrugsearch. com/edsblog (http://www. edrugsearch. com/edsblog).

AA Not the Only Way Author Melanie Solomon, a Lucky Survivor, Speaks Out as National Drug and Alcohol Recovery Month Approach

Drug and alcohol use have reached epic proportions in the 21st century. Millions are suffering in silence and we can no longer afford to ignore the impact of drugs and alcohol in our country and in our world, nor can we continue to ignore the fact that there are many effective substance abuse treatment alternatives. Sadly, most Americans, including addiction professionals, do not even know that these options exist. The intention of this release is to not only promote public awareness of this epidemic, but also to educate the reader and reevaluate the current wisdom in the field of addiction. In turn, this would decrease the stigma that surrounds substance abuse, and millions more could get the appropriate help that they need.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 23, 2006

Millions of people suffer from alcohol abuse or drug addiction. Statistics show that 22.5 million Americans aged 12 or over were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year, and millions more live in households with people who have had abuse or dependence on alcohol and drugs. As many as 74 percent of Americans say that addiction to alcohol has had some impact on them at some point in their lives, whether it was their own personal addiction, that of a friend or family member, or any other experience with addiction.

Since the 1930’s, the main, and often only known treatment has been AA, and the other 12-step programs. Since the ‘30s, an abundance of research has been going on to reveal even more statistics, mainly which AA has about a 5-20% success rate, and that there are many viable, evidence-based alternatives, which might better suit the complex and individualized needs of people afflicted with alcohol and drug problems. Yet as many as 97% of all US treatment centers are still based solely on a 12-step plan. In the face of all of these daunting statistics, Melanie Solomon hopes that from this point on, those seeking treatment for themselves, loved ones, or those making recommendations for others, will now consider, embrace, and expand the dialog about alternative approaches, programs and resources.

Melanie Solomon is one of the lucky few to overcome her substance abuse but only after a nine-year battle that led her to quit 12-step programs after an almost fatal overdose, and seek out alternative methods to getting healed. The results of her search for help are offered in a valuable new resource, AA: Not The Only Way, Your One-Stop Guide to 12-Step Alternatives.

Her book provides valuable information that until now could not be found in one comprehensive book. It shares the following:

Showcases 8 effective alternative treatments for achieving total abstinence. Reveals 2 successful recovery programs that teach moderation therapy for substance abuse. Unearths a radically different approach, harm reduction, which emphasizes health and wellness. Provides information to help you wisely choose the recovery program that is right for your situation, identifying the major factors that determine what works and what doesn’t. Contains a directory of over 100 licensed professionals and treatment programs around the U. S. and abroad that provide options beyond just the 12-step approach.

Melanie wrote her book as a result of her nine-year battle with drug addiction to prescription pills, such as Xanax and Vicodin, and many failed attempts to stay sober through Alcoholics Anonymous, and other 12-step programs. She was on a merry-go-round of drug rehabs, halfway houses, 12-step meetings, depression, anxiety and sobriety, and then relapse, where she would then go back to another drug treatment program. Constantly filled with guilt, shame and remorse, desperately in need of help as her health kept declining; she often thought death was going to be the only answer. It was only after her third almost fatal overdose that she concluded AA not only was failing to help her, it was actually harming her. “When the treatment becomes worse than the original ailment, it should be clear that it is time to move on and try something else.”

She believes, most people, including doctors, therapists, hospitals, counselors, and people with substance abuse issues, do not realize how dismal AA’s success rate is, nor are they aware of the many evidence-based alternative treatment programs with equal or greater success rates.

“AA only works for approximately 5% of the population,” says Melanie, citing AA’s own internal surveys on the efficacy of their program, as well as many government and independent studies. “This means 95% of those needing help need to know of alternatives to 12-step programs. I offer those choices in my book.”

The National Institute on Drug Abuse seems to agree, stating: “No single treatment program is right for everybody. Matching the treatment program to each individual’s needs is critical to success.”

“AA didn’t work for me, but it does work for some, including my dad who has now had 15 years of continued sobriety. I am not anti-AA, but I want people to understand that substance abuse treatment cannot be a one-size-fit-all solution. It’s to be as diverse and varied as the people who seek help.”

Melanie points out scientific evidence that:

What most Americans believe about drinking problems and their treatment is substantially inaccurate. Many providers deliberately resist change because they have too much of an attachment to their own ideas of what should work, claiming, “I know it worked for me, and I’m sure that it can work for everyone else as long as they just do what I say.” Abstinence is not the only way to sobriety. Individualizing treatment is crucial. Chronic “relapsers” can actually be harmed by 12-step programs that preach, “You are powerless to stop.”

“It is finally time to stop living in the dark ages of recovery, educate people about all of their choices and alternatives that are out there. Maybe we will start making a dent in the alcohol and drug use problem that millions are facing each day instead of continuing to perpetual it,” says Melanie. “People are needlessly suffering every minute of every day,” she continues, “and they are dying, from overdosing and suicide, and these people could have been helped IF they were given the information they so desperately needed. It is not right, nor is it ethical for treatment programs to only offer ONE option, whether it’s a person’s first attempt at sobriety or 20th. Don’t people with substance abuse issues have the right to know about all of their options, just like anyone else with an ailment? Of course they do. But why is no one blinking twice that they are not?”

“My goal is to get this information out not only to hospitals, institutions and addiction professionals, but into the curriculum of the related universities,” Melanie explains. ‘The next generation of therapists, psychiatrists, social workers, and doctors needs to know all the options available to their future drug and alcohol clients if recovery rates are to be consistently raised above AA’s.”

Now, just in time for Recovery Month, Ms. Solomon is expanding her vision, allowing all people who need this vital information to find it on the web, at www. aanottheonlyway. com. She offers website visitors private, 30 minute telephone consultations (free to callers in the U. S.) to help guide people with addictive behaviors to discover all of their choices, and to help them achieve their life goals. She also encourages family members to call her for help about their loved ones. (You can also ask her questions on www. about. com where she is listed as an expert for any drug or alcohol addiction issue.) There are also helpful books, websites, articles, a section just for professionals, and a new, free discussion forum, where anyone is invited to join, and much more is coming soon. For Addiction Professionals’ Day, September 20th, I am offering a FREE Special Article, Principles of Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation in the 21st Century-19 Critical Questions to Ask Regarding Effective Treatment. If you are interested, simply send a blank email with “Critical Questions” in the Subject Line to treatmentarticle at sendfree. com.

Leading addiction expert Dr. Marc Kern states, “I have long awaited this directory of addition all treatment alternatives. It represents what I believe to be the future of the field.”

Dr. Frederick Rotgers, another leading addiction expert explains, “The problem is finding treatment providers who provide these alternative, evidence-based approaches. Melanie has taken a wonderful step toward making that process, of identifying alternatives to traditional treatments, easier.”

Drop Shipping Changes The Way Retail Owners Do Business

Drop Shipping Changes The Way Retail Owners Do Business

With the growing online shopping popularity in North America, traditional retailers realize that they cannot ignore the online shopping business. However, many retailers are reluctant to start an online business, due to lack of a good shipping infrastructure.

Macon, GA (PRWEB) June 18, 2010

With drop shipping (http://www. dropshipdaemon. com) from http://www. dropshipdaemon. com (http://www. dropshipdaemon. com), retailers can now sell products online without actually having the inventory on hand. The drop shipping company will handle shipping for the retailer. Drop Shipping also allows retail business owners to expand and earn extra income during a tough economy.

"For the past few months, we have definitely seen a significant increase in the number of retailers interested in drop shipping our beauty and health products," says Henry, customer service rep at http://www. DropshipDaemon. com (http://www. DropshipDaemon. com). During the recession of 2009 many retailers, thanks to Wholesale Dropshippers (http://www. dropshipdaemon. com/dropshiplist. php), and E-tailers are forced to be more innovative in order to survive. They found out that drop shipping provides a low risk strategy to maintain or even expand their business. Many retailers already have an online presence with an online store. With drop shipping, retailers can now sell additional products that they never had in stock.

Online shopping in North America is increasing, even though North Americans have a long way to go to catch up to Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan where online shopping is done by over 96% of the population. With computers and high speed internet coming down in price, North American retailers realize that increasing numbers of people have home computers and are online at any given time so the potential for online shopping increases.

Nowadays, a lot of consumers want to look at a retailers website before they actually go to the retail store. People want to see what's available and make a decision before buying. Also, some products are only exclusive online and are not available in the retail store.

"In today's market, customers want to be well informed before they buy a company's website that provides the best customer service," says Henry, customer service rep at http://www. DropshipDaemon. com (http://www. DropshipDaemon. com). If a retail business owner wants to expand his or her business, be well known, and make significantly more profit, it's almost a necessity to be selling online and drop shipping provides a practical choice. A properly optimized website will bring customers that you may not otherwise get so the chance of gaining potential customers increases significantly.

Online retailers have a higher customer satisfaction rating than their off-line counterparts according to a 2005 E-Commerce report from the University of Michigan. "We try to take customer satisfaction to the next level, and the stakes just keep getting higher," says Henry, customer service rep at Wholesale Dropshipper (http://www. dropshipdaemon. com/) Directory, DropshipDaemon. com. At the same time, customers expect more from Web sites, as shown by a decrease in overall satisfaction rates since their peak at 80% a few years ago. In addition, there is a growing gap in customer satisfaction between top-performing sites such as Amazon. com and those that do not score as well.

Teen dating violence is a growing epidemic

Teen dating violence is a growing epidemic

A workshop designed to assist young men and women to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship is being offered for youth between the ages of 12-18.

(PRWEB) October 16, 2003

A workshop designed to assist young men and women to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship is being offered for youth between the ages of 12-18.

Heart of the Family is presenting the teen dating violence prevention workshop on Saturday, October 18, 2003, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church, Flint, Michigan.

After completing this workshop, participants will be better able to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship and the elements that make for healthy interpersonal relationships.

Flint Mayor James W Rutherford will open the program speaking on the vital role community centers play in character building and social skills development.

Parent orientation will follow with an introductio! n of workshop facilitators Jim & Elsa Croucher, founders of Citizens Against Domestic Violence, Middletown, Ohio.

The Croucher's whose 18-year old daughter Tina was murdered by her ex-boyfriend have spoken to 6,000 high school and college students nationally.

Research has shown an alarming trend of acceptance for some form of violence in their interpersonal relationships.

A survey conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee reported that students found it acceptable for violence to be used, "if a girl yelled at her boyfriend or insulted him in front of his friends." The students surveyed also felt a girl deserved to be shoved or slapped by her boyfriend if she was seen talking to another boy.

A Harvard study published in the August 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that teen dating violence often leads to other risky behaviors such as substance abuse, promiscuity, unhealthy weight control, pr! egnancy and suicide.

These are the behaviors the workshop seeks to change.

Heart of the Family is a non-profit organization committed to empowering abused women and children exposed to family violence.

Michael F Craig founded the organization following the loss of his daughter Nichole who died from childbirth complications ten days after being beaten by her husband Mustafah Muhammad who then roamed the defensive backfield for the Indianapolis Colts. Years earlier he loss his only son Brian who died from a gunshot wound to the head during a dispute with his girlfriend.

Craig travels widely sharing the pain of his losses and is often called upon for media interviews.

The impact on the lives of the youth participating in the workshop will be immediate. They will leave with a better understanding of the cycle of abuse that is destroying our families, devastating our communities, and contributing to the violence spilling over into our school classrooms.

Admission is free and all are welcome regardless of fa! ith or belief.

Texas Spring Lawn Care Tips Announced by AllAboutLawns. com

Texas Spring Lawn Care Tips Announced by AllAboutLawns. com

Although springtime weather has arrived in the Southwest, February lawn care varies dramatically from Arizona to Texas, reports AllAboutLawns. com. Lawns in Arizona will need de-thatching soon, although lawns in other parts of the country are buried in snow. Location-specific lawn care articles and seasonal advice can be found on AllAboutLawns. com.

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) February 20, 2007

Homeowners in Phoenix and Austin have distinctive lawn care challenges in the springtime, reports AllAboutLawns. com, a comprehensive lawn and yard care resource. An online column this month about Texas and Arizona lawn care reveals that while warming temperatures have arrived in the American Southwest, preparations for a healthy summertime lawn vary greatly by locale (http://www. allaboutlawns. com/lawn-mowing-mowers/spring-lawn-care-in-austin-and-phoenix. php (http://www. allaboutlawns. com/lawn-mowing-mowers/spring-lawn-care-in-austin-and-phoenix. php)). Lawn care varies dramatically depending on the region, and online resource AllAboutLawns. com has information about lawn maintenance, feeding, pests and general care.

Phoenix and Austin are about 1,100 miles apart. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures on February 11 reached 78 degrees in Phoenix, while Austin had a high of 57 degrees. "That means you may be too late to work on de-thatching grass in Phoenix, and too early to lay down spring weed control in Austin," reports AllAboutLawns. com columnist Gabby Hyman.

In Texas, early spring is the optimal time to prepare Zoysia grass, St. Augustine, or other warm-season lawns for summer, Hyman adds. AllAboutLawns. com forum moderator Dawn West agrees, "Lawns in warm climates need special care, from getting the timing of pre-emergence herbicides right to knowing just when to do spring planting. Early spring attention can make a world of difference."

According to AllAboutLawns. com, many homeowners organize a year-round calendar for routine lawn maintenance with feeding tasks in spring and fall, aerating and de-thatching during dormant months and annual weed control using pre-emergent killers in spring and spot treatment during the summers. February lawn care is directly connected to growing seasons and can change dramatically depending on the region of the country, Hyman writes. In Chicago, February lawn care may consist of moving huge piles of snow to prevent destructive spring snow molds. In Texas, however, February is a great time to rent a power rake or call a lawn care professional for thinning thatch, according to the article.

In Phoenix, the warm season has begun and residents can apply pre-emergent weed applications in granules or powders. With temperatures in the high 70s, it's important to water down any pre-emergent applications and soak it down into the soil, Hyman adds in "Spring Lawn Care in Austin and Phoenix." (http://www. allaboutlawns. com/lawn-mowing-mowers/spring-lawn-care-in-austin-and-phoenix. php (http://www. allaboutlawns. com/lawn-mowing-mowers/spring-lawn-care-in-austin-and-phoenix. php))

Other recent springtime columns at AllAboutLawns. com include topical and regional advice on restoring lawns in New York State, battling white grub infestations in Michigan, selecting optimal grass varieties for Georgia lawns and fighting broadleaf weeds in Virginia.

AllAboutLawns. com is a comprehensive lawn and yard care resource. Visitors can ask staff questions in the lawn forum or benefit from hundreds of articles on seasonal lawn care, grass types, weed prevention, mowers and other lawn maintenance equipment.

Planned Parenthood, Arnold Schwarzenegger Sued by High Ranking Planned Parenthood Ex-Employee for Systemic Racism & Financial Mismanagement

Planned Parenthood, Arnold Schwarzenegger Sued by High Ranking Planned Parenthood Ex-Employee for Systemic Racism & Financial Mismanagement

The Pro-Family Law Center of Southern California has filed a suit against Planned Parenthood and the Governor of California seeking a judicial order that would stop funding to Planned Parenthood because of rampant discrimination and financial misrepresentation.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 20, 2005

A suit naming the Governor of the State of California, CaliforniaÂ’s State Treasurer, Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles (PPLA), and others, was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday afternoon (Andrew Jones v. Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, et al., LASC Case No. BC327377). The blockbuster suit was filed by Andrew Jones, the former Project Manager of the Community Services/Education Department of PPLA. Mr. Jones worked for PPLA for several years and is African-American.

The verified complaint seeks recovery for unlawful termination, racial and sexual harassment, and a failure to pay overtime. Jones’ suit alleges that PPLA regularly allowed overt racism and sexism to infect its facilities in early 2004. Among other serious allegations, it is alleged that PPLA did nothing when one of its employees was referred to as a “nigger.” Additionally, the suit, filed under penalty of perjury, alleges that PPLA consistently portrayed African-American males as being irresponsible and that male employees were regularly referred to as “dickheads” and other offensive terms by the white female management.

Sworn affidavits by other female PPLA staff, supporting the allegations of the complaint, were also filed Tuesday. One swore, “There was a sense that any employee who was not a white female was going to be carefully watched. . . . [T]here was a strong anti-male bias at PPLA.” Another affidavit refers to, “a significant anti-male bias.” Attorneys for Jones indicate that this is just one of several upcoming suits by high level PPLA employees who were fired for whistle-blowing or complaining of racism.

Jones’ lawsuit also seeks an immediate court order requiring the Governor of the State of California, the State Treasurer, and the Director of California’s Health & Human Services Agency to stop funding PPLA due to its racist practices and failure to disclose serious failures in its accounting systems and qualifications for state funding. In part, Plaintiff relies on a late-2003 single audit finding by the certified public accounting firm of RBZ LLC that PPLA “did not comply with requirements regarding reporting that are applicable to its Family Planning Services program.”

Additionally, the complaint alleges that it was only after Jones questioned the financial practices of PPLA that he was fired. According to the complaint, he was given a stellar employee review right before his termination. Pursuant to California law, contractors/grantees/recipients such as PPLA are to refrain from discrimination in order to qualify for taxpayer-funded programs. PPLA is subject to rigorous reporting requirements and must be able to demonstrate financial viability on state loan programs. The suit alleges that PPLA failed, and continues to fail, on all fronts. In May 2004, Plaintiff “placed Defendant PPLA on notice of “accounting miscues, angry patients, and disgruntled gatekeepers,” according to the complaint.

According to Richard D. Ackerman, Jones’ lead attorney, “The State of California simply cannot afford to continue funding PPLA’s programs, especially when California is looking at cutting funding to school children, teachers, emergency health care, and other areas that are far more important than PPLA’s elective activities. There are plenty of other agencies that can offer the same services as PPLA without misrepresenting their financial condition, and without engaging in racism and sexism in the workplace. This is no time to be giving special interests such as PPLA preferential treatment over those that legitimately need money, do not engage in discriminatory practices, and are honest about their financial condition.”

Finally, the suit makes mention of the fact that PPLA concocted a scheme to place an abortion facility in South Central Los Angeles without being honest about its purpose. It is alleged that Jones and other employees were instructed to market the facility to the African-American community as being a non-abortion facility. It appears that PPLA was well aware of the fact that LA African-Americans do not want their unborn children eliminated by abortion, and knew that they could not get community support if they came into town promoting a depletion of the LA African-American community’s future generations. The complaint alleges, “Plaintiff refused to engage in PPLA promotional practices that were intended to deceive the African-American community in South Los Angeles. . . Plaintiff, an African-American, was not comfortable being forced to misrepresent facts to other similarly situated persons.”

Ackerman summed up this case by saying, “This is the beginning of a new era of accountability for California’s special interests. Unscrupulous organizations cannot come to the trough expecting to be fed if they are not willing to abide by the same laws that govern legitimately needy organizations. PPLA, unlike California schools, teachers, hospitals, and state clinics, is supported by generous financial contributions from Hollywood celebrities, wealthy corporations, and huge estates. I sincerely hope that Angelides and Schwarzenegger will protect the public in these dire financial times. This is no time for political agendas to get in the way of protecting taxpayers from waste and fraud. I might also point out that racism and sexism, in any form, are unacceptable in a civilized society. Given Planned Parenthood’s rampant promotion of diversity and tolerance, I think it would be best if they demonstrated some necessary integrity by voluntarily abstaining from taxpayer funding.”
