BRIDGEWATER, N. J., January 31, 2002 -- IT leaders must adopt a collaborative leadership model in order to ensure the long-term health of their organizations, according to a new report by people3, a Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB) company.

Recent political and economic events have exacerbated an already challenging IT environment and have increased pressure on global IT functions. According to people3, IT leaders must fundamentally change how they respond and manage in order to sustain, or in many cases, increase an organizationÂ’s productivity and profitability.

“Through knowledge sharing, partnerships and open communication, leaders must encourage employees to become stakeholders in an organization’s success,” said Linda M. Pittenger, president and CEO of people3. “Employees with a voice in an organization will enthusiastically contribute to an enduring process or product that will see an organization through harsh economic periods.”

Strong IT leaders must realize that building and maintaining critical alliances with peers, subordinates and customers is an essential ingredient for success, according to the people3 report. Failure to maintain these relationships will often result in the loss of cultural perspective and connection to the organizational foundation.

According to the people3, technology professionals are still in high demand and without a collaborative leadership model in which employees contribute their ideas and views, many technology professionals may easily be lured by outside organizations.

“Human capital is an enterprise’s most important, core asset,” said Pittenger. “Collaborative leadership has proven to be enormously effective in improving employee productivity and morale, as well as fostering a greater sense of contribution and empowerment in each employee.”

Additional information is available in the report "Managing IT Humand Capital in a Sea of Change." The report examines the challenging and complex "sea of change" that many IT organizations are facing today, and how IT leaders should manage them.
