The contract started on October 2nd and will last for twenty months. The Miami VA Healthcare System is part of the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network (VISN 8), which encompasses Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

The main goal of the contract is to assist the Miami VA Healthcare System to change the culture in its skilled nursing services departments from an institutional model to a resident-centered model of care. The initiative will ultimately cultivate a model of care that will focus on the holistic needs of the veterans to improve their quality of care and quality of life. The contract execution will feature four key elements:

1. transforming the current nursing home culture to a resident-centered approach

2. empowering frontline team members to help address issues related to the delivery of customized, high quality care

3. changing the environment to foster a homelike experience

4. linking transformation of the nursing home culture to quality indicators

The cornerstones of the program will be community and VA partnerships, interdisciplinary care management, and support from local leadership. Together with the Institute, the Miami VA Healthcare System will create a model of care that not only focuses on the treatment of disease, but care that focuses on the social, environmental and emotional needs of individual residents.

Giving back to the community is nothing new for Synergy Solutions, an inbound and outbound teleservices firm located in Phoenix. They volunteer many hours, donate and support local and global charities year-round, including holiday donations to Notmykid. org in lieu of holiday gifts for clients. But as members of the Synovation volunteerism team watched in horror the images of the tsunami destruction in Southeast Asia, they knew something extra had to be done. Only a few days after the disaster, the team had launched an aggressive fund raising campaign within the company, and they called on everyone from the top down. “When the team came up with this plan, I was thrilled,” commented Lori Fentem, president of Synergy Solutions. “We agreed that the company would match dollar for dollar all donations made by our employees nationwide.”

In just a few short weeks, from December 30 to January 14, the employees and company had raised over $5500, which was donated to MercyCorps and Doctors Without Borders, both charities with a strong presence where the tsunami hit hardest. “I’m very proud of what we were able to do in such a short amount of time,” added Fentem, “It’s amazing what a small group can do if we all pull together, and that’s what Synovation is all about.”

The Synovation team at Synergy Solutions consists of eleven volunteer representatives from every area of the company – operations, account management, IT, accounting and sales – who come together to create Synovation which is defined as combining Synergy (The Power of Team) and Innovation. The team’s mission is to foster the Synovation Culture by developing community service projects, volunteer opportunities, as well as building team spirit and camaraderie within the company. Another of the great ideas that has come out of the Synovation team is the “Synovation Weekly,” a brief newsletter that is sent to every employee every Monday morning. Recent issues included kudos for jobs well done, quotes from delighted clients, funds raised to support an employee’s ill daughter, a chili for charity event, and news of the company’s 5th birthday celebration. “This is the very first thing I look at on Monday mornings, and it starts my whole week off right,” commented Corey Conklin, Chief Operating Officer. “It’s one more way of staying focused on the positive and keeping our entire staff connected to one another as a team,” he added.

Best Friends Animal Society encourages people to use National Feral Cat Day on Oct. 16 as an opportunity to learn how they can be part of the solution to make life better for homeless cats.

Started in 2001 by Alley Cat Allies, National Feral Cat Day has become "an effective way to highlight the issue of overpopulation of feral and stray cats, and the humane approaches to helping them," said Shelly Kotter, Focus on Felines campaign specialist for Best Friends Animal Society.

Kotter explained that Best Friends Animal Society believes that the needs of free-roaming cats and the issues surrounding them -- which exist in every community -- are best encapsulated in the term "community cats."

"There is no one description that fits all free-roaming cats," Kotter added. "These homeless cats are the result of a failure in the community -- unneutered housecats that wandered away from home, cats abandoned when the family moved, or cats that have never been socialized to people in the first place. None of these cats would be on the streets if people had spayed or neutered their pets and kept their cats safe."

Kotter outlined some simple steps to help homeless cats:
"You can get involved as much, or as little as your schedule and budget permit. Don't underestimate what seems like a small contribution to the cause: many people doing little things add up to major accomplishments," she said.
If you feed stray cats, spay and neuter them so that the breeding cycle is stopped. Keep your own cats from becoming statistics. Have them live in the home. Get them spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you want your cat to have outside experiences, please consider screening-in a porch or patio, building a cattery, investing in special cat fencing, and/or teaching your cat to walk on a harness. Support your local community trap/neuter/return (TNR) groups. Donate -- even small amounts add up. Volunteer a couple of hours a month. Become a caregiver for a local cat colony. Foster adoptable kittens or lost housecats rescued during TNR operations.

"Best Friends believes the solutions for these cats rest with the community as well. Through a variety of strategies, people have the power to help the cats lead a humane life as well as reducing the number of cats who are eking out an existence on the streets," Kotter said.

"We like to think that every day is 'community cat day.' We are working with communities across the country on innovative and proactive programs to help lessen the numbers of feral and stray cats euthanized in shelters.

"Through our work, several rural Iowa communities have embraced TNR programs, fostering and re-homing kittens and tame cats rescued from colonies. If the cats are in a place where they are at risk, the people in these towns follow strict relocation protocols to provide the cats a new home," Kotter said.

Four Directions Community Cat Program (southern Utah)

This unique program works with more than 38 urban and rural communities in southern Utah. Best Friends' clinic as well as five veterinary clinics around southern Utah participate in this low cost spay/neuter program. The program has six new relocation colonies that re-home feral cats that otherwise would have been euthanized.

FixNation (Los Angeles)
Best Friends works in Los Angeles with FixNation, a nonprofit clinic that cares mainly for feral and stray cats but also operates as a low cost spay/neuter clinic. The first of its kind in the United States, the ground-breaking clinic leads the way as a model for community cat clinics around the country. The clinic works with local groups and individuals to battle cat overpopulation, providing free spay/neuter services for feral and stray cats, as well as shots and health checks. In addition, FixNation and Best Friends work together to lower the shelter euthanasia rates in East Valley, an impoverished area of Los Angeles. The program targets East Valley residents, offering TNR as an alternative to trap and kill. In the first year of the program, estimates are that East Valley shelter cat intake statistics will be reduced by five percent.

First Coast No More Homeless Pets (Jacksonville, Florida)

The killing of community cats has ended in Jacksonville.

The Feral Freedom Program is a collaboration between the city of Jacksonville, First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP), the Jacksonville Humane Society and Best Friends Animal Society. Cats who arrive at the shelter in traps are turned over to FCNMHP to be spayed/neutered, then returned to their original trap location. Other communities are adopting this program as a way to save lives and taxpayer dollars.

NMHP Utah and Best Friends work together with local governments to improve the shelter systems in northern Utah using tax dollars to combat the over population of community cats.

“Foot ailments caused by snowy and icy conditions, as well as those caused by wearing improper footwear, are just several of the common winter injuries podiatric physicians commonly see and treat during the winter months,” said Dr. Ross Taubman, president of the American Podiatric Medical Association. “But there are several steps that can always be taken to drastically reduce incidences of these kinds of ailments.”

The following helpful tips from APMA will help to keep you on your feet during the holiday season:

Avoid aches. Determined shoppers spend long hours navigating cramped, crowded shopping malls and department stores searching for the perfect gift. A long day of holiday shopping can often leave feet suffering from foot problems such as blisters and sore arches. To help ease stiffness and pain, stretch and massage feet to release tension, increase circulation and rejuvenate skin. To combat swelling in the legs and feet, elevate legs above heart level while lying down after a long day.

Soothe dry skin. With chilly winter weather often comes dry air, which leads to cracked, dry skin. A 2008 APMA survey found that 56 percent of women always or frequently suffer from skin that is dry, rough, cracked or irritated. Properly moisturizing feet with a hydrating lotion such as AmLactin, which holds the APMA Seal of Approval, will help to repair dry feet and promote softer, smoother skin.

Select smart footwear. Wearing the right type of footwear for weather conditions is imperative to avoiding foot and ankle sprains, breaks, blisters and more. While women attending holiday parties may feel obligated to wear high heels, always bring a pair of sensible winter shoes to wear to and from get-togethers, and remember to keep high heel height limited to two inches or less. When donning boots, consumers should always make sure they feature an adequate amount of tread – which will help to reduce slippage from icy terrain. Additionally, purchasing a pair of boots made with leather or natural fibers will help to absorb moisture and keep feet dry and odor-free. Those suffering from diabetes or other conditions that cause decreased circulation should take extra care to keep feet well-insulated during the winter to avoid frostbite, including wearing socks made with a poly-cotton blend, even when indoors.

In many cases the insulin resistance causes women with PCOS to become overweight or obese, which in turn raises cholesterol and blood pressure putting a woman with PCOS at seven times the greater risk as a normal woman to have hypertension, a heart attack or a stroke.

Infertility is yet another condition many women with PCOS face. PCOS is the number cause of infertility in American women today. A woman with PCOS may have irregular cycles, non-exsistant cycles or in many cases cycles without ovulation. These factors make achieving pregnancy a daunting task for many and may lead to conditions such as miscarriage and early ovarian failure.

PCOS can even increase a woman's risk for endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS can go months without having a menstrual cycle and when women do not ovulate on a regular basis, the lining of their uterine wall becomes very thick and vulnerable. This increases the chance for endometrial cancer and hysterectomy of the utereus and ovaries.

So, why is PCOS so difficult to diagnose and where is the awareness for this serious condition?

Part of the problem, then and now, is that the PCOS symptoms manifest themselves in different ways. In fact, not all affected women have polycystic ovaries. Women with PCOS can have any combination of symptoms of varying severity. As a result, researchers, doctors and women themselves looked at the symptoms individually rather than collectively.

The PCOS Treatment and Awareness Petition plans to empower the PCOS Community to speak very openly about their struggles, symptoms, and trials to overcome the illness, to help other women and girls understand the syndrome and seek the proper resources to help them manage their lives with PCOS. It hopes to be a driving force in changing the way the public, media and government view PCOS education, treatment and coverage for medical procedures, as a result of PCOS.
