WILMINGTON, DE. – (NEWSWIRE) Planes, trains, and automobiles will whisk Produce Man and his team on its third 5 A Day Across the USA™ whirlwind tour, slated to cross the country from Salinas, Calif. to Washington, DC from May 18 through June 2, 2000, covering 6,100 miles. The 5 A Day Across the USA™ tour, sponsored by the Produce for Better Health Foundation and supporting partners, is an effort to reach large numbers of consumers with the message of eating 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day to improve their health.

To date, the Foundation plans stops in the following cities: Salinas and Pleasanton Calif.; Bentonville, Ark.; Memphis, Tenn.; Dallas, Tex.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Kansas City, Kan.; Des Moines, Iowa; Minneapolis, Minn.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Chicago, Ill.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Boston, Mass.; Wilmington, Del., Baltimore, Md.; and Washington, DC.

“We are spreading the magic of 5 A Day across the nation,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph. D., R. D., president of the Foundation. “It is a concept that is taking off like wildfire! People are excited about this fun, feel-good message – fruits and vegetables offer the best agents against fighting cancer, heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related illnesses.”

The national tour will begin with a kick-off event in Salinas, Calif., featuring the ‘World’s Largest Tossed Spinach Salad’. The celebration will take place from 11:30 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. on May 18 at the Salinas High School and will feature a performance from the high school band. The California 5 A Day Campaign will be working with elementary schools in the area to gather more than 10,000 pledges from individuals promising to take the 5 A Day pledge.

The taste sensation featured in the WorldÂ’s Largest Tossed Salad will be duplicated across the nation during in-store tastings.

“The great thing about fruits and vegetables is you can enjoy the food without the guilt – if only everything in life was that easy,” Pivonka said.

 Not to be outdone by California, the Utah 5 A Day Campaign is planning a luncheon event at the state capitol. Plans are underway to create UtahÂ’s Largest Salad Bar featuring an 18-foot mouth entryway to the lunch area where guests will enjoy bountiful selections fresh from natureÂ’s own garden. Contests, grocery store tours, taste-testing demonstrations, and fruit selection and storage classes will be conducted throughout the day.

 On May 20, the 5 A Day Across the USA™ team will be greeted by employees of the Piggly Wiggly Food Stores. The 5 A Day Across the USA™ team will arrive at the Piggly Wiggly in Memphis, Tenn., at 1:30 p. m. to tour a 45-foot custom coach bus bearing the storeÂ’s mascot. Events scheduled include in-store tours, a mini-health fair, demonstrations, food samplings, and give-a-ways including fruit and vegetable coloring books and prizes.

 The Iowa 5 A Day Campaign will unveil a billboard theme titled ‘Pick A Better SnackÂ’ and build IowaÂ’s Largest Fruit Bowl dessert ever for an editorÂ’s luncheon set for 1 p. m. May 25 at the Holiday Inn University Park, in Des Moines, Iowa.

 Tentative plans for the Lexington, Ky., 5 A Day Farmers Market event on May 20 include a noontime salad lunch served in the shade of an old-fashioned tent. Scheduled guest speakers include the mayor and other officials.

 In Ohio, 5 A Day enthusiasts will celebrate 5 A Day Across the USA™ in the heart of Cincinnati from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. May 31 at Fountain Square. Planned events include bands, fresh fruit give-a-ways, special costumed character guest appearances, chef demonstrations, radio, television broadcasts, and contests.

 Residents in Phoenix, Ariz., will rise to the 5 A Day Challenge with events starting at 8 a. m. May 23 on the capitol grounds. Corporations, schools, and individuals will be encouraged to gather 5 A Day pledge cards, and those with the most cards will be recognized during the celebration. Guests expected to attend include the governor and government officials.

 Delaware again earned its title as the first state. Governor Tom Carper set the stage for 5 A Day Across the USA™ by signing the first 5 A Day pledge in the nation during an earlier east coast tour. To celebrate the second tour through the state, the Delaware Health and Social Services, Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities, will incorporate the 5 A Day message into their yearlong Millennium March to Wellness program. The program strives to improve the health of senior citizens through nutrition and wellness education and encouraging increased physical activity, thus the 5 A Day program is a natural fit. Governor Carper will address the audience at 11:30 a. m. June 1 at Rodney Square in downtown Wilmington. Tentative plans also include a giant fruit and vegetable display by one of the local supermarket retailers.

 Participants involved in all these 5 A Day Across the USA™ events will be invited to gather from 9 a. m. to 11:30 a. m. June 2 in Washington, D. C. for a special Millennium launch and tribute to the future of 5 A Day Across the USA™. Special guests will be traveling from around the country to attend the festivities, and include government and health officials, and guest appearances by several costumed fruit and vegetable characters. Produce Man will distribute prizes, and guests will gather on the capitol steps for a group photo commemorating the event.

 The FoundationÂ’s inaugural 5 A Day Across the USA™ tour took place May 20-27, 1999, from Orlando, Fla., to New York, N. Y. The 1,500-mile route brought the 5 A Day message to residents in 17 cities along the east coast. The west coast tour took place August 27-Sept. 4, 1999, along an 1,800-mile route reaching 14 cities from Seattle, Wash., to Los Angeles, Calif.
