What are trans fats?

Do mayonnaise and salad dressings contain trans fat?

Trans fats are not found in mayonnaise or the vast majority of salad dressings. Natural, liquid vegetable oils versus partially hydrogenated oils are a primary ingredient in salad dressings, such as soybean, canola, corn, olive, safflower and sunflower oils. These liquid vegetable oils are naturally lower in saturated fats and are trans-fat free. Other ingredients used in some salad dressings contribute only miniscule, if any, amounts of trans fats. So load up on healthy salads and sandwiches for the holidays and as part of your New Year's resolutions and don’t hold the dressing or the mayo.

370 accomplished individuals from 49 countries applied for the 10 available 2010 fellowships. The Fellows Program begins with a demanding eight-week training course that features in-depth discussions and workshops with corporate and nonprofit leaders, academics, and former Acumen Fellows. This training is followed by a nine-month assignment with one of Acumen's portfolio companies that provides critical goods and services -- health care, housing, water, and energy -- to people living in poverty across South Asia and East Africa. Assignments in the past have ranged from redesigning a marketing-and-branding strategy for a microfinance organization to defining geographic expansion strategy to building internal HR systems. The Fellows Program is capped off with three weeks spent at Acumen Fund's New York City office, during which time returning participants share lessons learned in the field with the Acumen team, community members, and the next class of fellows.

Sule will work with d. light design, an Acumen investee which replaces expensive, unsafe kerosene lanterns with LED lamps, in India. He has a background in global social sustainable enterprise and mechanical engineering with an MBA from Colorado State University.

Josephat Byaruhanga (Uganda)
Josephat will work in Kenya with Western Seeds, which promotes sustainability and produces seed varieties appropriate for traditionally low-income farmers. He has experience managing rural community development programs and a Masters in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis.

Gamuchirai Chituri (Zimbabwe)
Gamuchirai will work with UHEAL, which provides access to specialized eye care services for diabetic retinopathy previously unavailable to low-income customers in Kenya. She has built an enterprise that trains young entrepreneurs from Zimbabwe in starting businesses.

Sarah Dimson (U. S.)
Sarah will work in Pakistan with AMC, a for-profit, low-income housing company. She has experience in non profit consulting and affordable housing development and a BA in Science, Technology & Society from Stanford University.

Staff injuries are being reduced at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY, thanks to an innovative, national, “Safe Lifting Environment” campaign that promotes the safe movement and handling of patients as a public service to the healthcare industry.

After suffering an injury last year while moving a patient, Tanya Walsh, RN, coordinator of the No Lift Protocol at Highland Hospital, became concerned that other nurses might also injure themselves while working with patients.

Now, Walsh is spearheading an effort to raise patient lifting and safety awareness with staff nurses, and for help in her efforts she is utilizing the resources of the Safe Lifting Environment (www. safeliftingenvironment. com) campaign.

It all starts with education, says Walsh, and without it a nurse can find herself in a difficult situation.

“In nursing schools, you are taught to use good body mechanics and limited use of lifting equipment to prevent injury,” said Walsh. “You aren’t taught all the core lifting components, partly because the new technologies today are making the old ways of lifting patients obsolete.”

With the rise of patient obesity and the fast pace of the hospital, injuries can happen easily when nurses attempt to lift and reposition patients without help – from other nurses or with the proper equipment.

“In 2005 alone, there were 18 nurses on my unit that suffered from lifting injuries and at around $100,000 per claim, the administration was open to a change,” Walsh said.

So she set out to create a No Lift Protocol designed to decrease caregiver injury and promote independence of the patient population at Highland Hospital.

“First,” said Walsh, “we chose to implement safe lifting techniques with our staff. We promote the use of patient lifts, plastic sheets and repositioning devices to move patients - and we try to work as a team as much as possible, even when we’re in a rush.”

With a significant decrease in injuries for the first quarter of 2006, and only one injury noted since implementing the No Lift Protocol, Walsh is ready to extend her efforts and make a difference for more nurses in the healthcare profession.

“By using the Safe Lifting Environment materials, available at www. safeliftingenvironment. com, I was able to further promote awareness of our own No Lift Protocol. I am utilizing the injury statistics as part of my program research, and we are raising awareness by using the safe lifting decals in conjunction with our No Lift Protocol,” said Walsh.

With initial program success, the hospital administration is looking to Tanya to spread the No Lift Protocol throughout the facility.

“If we can make nursing conditions everywhere better and reduce the risk for injury,” stated Walsh, “then maybe we won’t have such a nursing shortage and we will be able to recruit more to our profession – because this truly is a rewarding career.”

On January 15, 2011, a group of 25 handpicked applicants met at the world renowned, waterfront Canyon Ranch Spa and Resort to learn the JNL FUSION method from none other than JNL herself. The week end started with a bang! University study finds the FDA is financially dependent on the brand name drug industry. Due to this "very strong" financial relationship, the drug industry has significant and increasing leverage over the FDA. The FDA can no longer be trusted to objectively safeguard and protect U. S. citizens.

A 2005 University of La Verne (ULV) School of Public Administration study concluded that the large sums of money paid yearly to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by the brand name pharmaceutical manufacturers gives the drug industry financial leverage and influence over the FDA. Until the drug industry money or the strings attached to the money are eliminated, U. S. citizens should be extremely cautious and highly suspicious of FDA actions related to prescription drugs.

Lead researcher, Dr. Gary Lawson said, “The drug manufacturers are now paying for and receiving reduced regulatory oversight; special considerations; unique opportunities and unprecedented U. S. monopoly protection. At minimum, the FDA’s dependence on drug industry funding creates doubt and suspicion as to the agency’s motives, and at maximum, Americans who take a brand name prescription drug may be doing so at their own peril.”

In 1992, to speed up new drug approvals and eliminate a backlog of needed life-saving medications, Congress authorized the collection of drug industry fees for one five-year period. Although no new drug approval efficiencies were realized after year five, the law was extended twice. According to the ULV study, with each extension, the drug industry paid significantly higher fees, and then, used the higher fees as leverage to limit the FDAÂ’s ability to act as an objective consumer protection agency.

As the brand name drug industry acquired more financial leverage over the FDA, the ULV study showed that adverse drug reaction reports more than doubled. Americans have a 32% higher chance of experiencing a reportable adverse drug reaction. More deadly drugs were released in the U. S. first and stayed on the U. S. market longer. The costs of drugs to consumers skyrocketed. The FDA shifted its policy to protect the drug industryÂ’s U. S. monopoly. Off-label drug promotion was authorized. Direct to consumer advertising was authorized. The FDA significantly decreased other consumer protection services, and the FDA allowed the drug industry to set internal Agency objectives, goals, and FDA job descriptions.

Lawson said, “The FDA taking drug industry money is failed public policy. In exchange for saving taxpayers a few cents a month, U. S. citizens have increasingly become the worldÂ’s guinea pigs by testing newly released medications. An unethical partnership was created between the regulated and regulators. Regarding prescription drugs, U. S. citizens can no longer trust the FDA. Known deadly medications are given FDA approval. Few new breakthrough medications have been produced, and the well-being of Americans by the tens of millions have been jeopardized.” 

The ULV study listed the following major findings:

· Taking drug industry money negatively impacts the FDA’s primary mission of protecting the health and safety of U. S. citizens. Therefore, Congress must immediately eliminate private industry fees paid directly to the FDA or eliminate the pro-drug industry strings attached to the money.

· Since the FDA started collecting drug industry money, the Agency has made changes that support the profit motives of the brand name drug industry and put Americans at risk.

· Drug industry money impedes the FDA’s ability to maintain the public trust, and compromises the Agency’s continued legitimacy as a viable, objective, consumer protection agency.

Based on a review of the findings of this important study, Dr. Suzanne Holmes, Faculty, School of Human Service, Capella University said, “U. S. citizens by the millions are taking newly released medicines and experiencing unintended, sometimes deadly, adverse drug reactions. Not only has the FDA abandoned its primary role of protecting American citizens, it is now supporting the brand name pharmaceutical industry in such a manner that the Agency has become, in essence, another well paid marketing arm.”

The Fort Myers Regional Partnership, Lee County’s Economic Development Office, announced today that the county has approved financial incentives totaling $140,000 with the State of Florida approving $160,000 for a total of $300,000 for 21st Century Oncology’s expansion within Lee County.

In more than 20 years of service, 21st Century Oncology has grown to include more than 90 radiation therapy centers clustered into regional networks across the United States and affiliations with other medical specialties that are involved in the continuum of care for cancer patients. Headquarted in Fort Myers, 21st Century Oncology has more than 350 employees locally and approximately 2,000 employees nationwide.

“Our Lee County offices were the location of choice for our expansion to manage the influx of out-of-state billing, collections and support services with the planned relocation of a billing and collections facility located in another state,” noted Jeffrey A.
