Leading Rheumatologist Offers Tips to Prevent Seasonal Back Aches

Those lazy days of summer have ended and it's time to "prepare your back" for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Whether it's raking leaves, shoveling snow, or cleaning out the garage, your back muscles will be strained and abused. For those not prepared, this will mean getting a backache.

"Fortunately, with attention to proper techniques and exercise, you can help to prevent seasonal back pain," said Dr. Keith Reich, a board-certified rheumatologist and contributing editor to OurHealthNetwork. com. Here are a few tips that Dr. Reich shares with his patients who are prone to back pain:

Do not rake, shovel, or lift heavy objects first thing in the morning. Move around a bit and "loosen up." The back is most vulnerable to injury after being at rest all night.
Do warm-up and stretching exercises just before beginning the job. Dr. Reich describes several stretches you can do at http://www. OurHealthNetwork. com/backpain (http://www. OurHealthNetwork. com/backpain).
Try not to twist your spine. If you need to reach for something, turn your entire body, rather than twist. Twisting along with bending will severely stress the spine and back muscles.
Do not use rakes and shovels that are too heavy for you.
If you need to lift a heavy load, get help.
Take frequent breaks and stretch your back in the opposite direction (lean backward).

Raking leaves and shoveling snow are strenuous activities that, if done properly, will help you burn extra calories and give you a good cardiac workout. If done improperly though, you will experience hours of back pain. If you follow these tips, you will enjoy your raking and shoveling "work outs:"

Raking Tips:
Stand straight and walk to the leaves, instead of bending at the waist to reach them.
Once you have the leaves under the rake, pull them straight back toward you. Don¹t twist your body to get another load of leaves.
Avoid overuse injury to the back and shoulders by switching sides every few minutes. Rake ten minutes left-handed and another ten minutes right-handed.

Snow Shoveling Tips:
Lifting a shovelful of snow should be done with your knees, not your back. Keep your back straight, bend your knees, and lift the snow by straightening your knees.
Lift smaller loads of snow rather than heavy shovelfuls.
Turn your entire body and step in the direction in which you are throwing the snow. Do not just twist at the waist and throw. Twisting and throwing a heavy load will cause early back fatigue and make the back susceptible to severe injuries.

Heavy Object Lifting Tips:
Wear proper shoes with good traction.
Wear a lifting belt or back brace.
Stand close to the object you wish to lift.
Bend at the knees, not at the waist. Keep your back and neck straight so that your head and eyes are directed forward and not down.
Contract the stomach muscles, and hold the object close to your body.
Lift slowly by standing straight up (un-bending your knees). Allow your legs to lift the weight.

Dr. Reich's Warm-Up Exercises:
From the waist, bend forward, backward, and to each side, holding each position for ten seconds. Repeat ten times.
Semi-sit ups are great for the abdominal and back muscles. Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Raise your head and shoulders off the floor. Hold for ten seconds. Repeat five times.
Walk around the yard several times.
Do several circular arm and neck movements.

When the job is finished, Dr. Reich suggests taking some time out for yourself, and treating your muscles to a warm, soothing bath. This is good therapy for your mind, as well as your back!

Even though summer is just not here yet, the National Spa & Pool Institute (NSPI) has some water safety tips for families to keep in mind during the season.

“Make water safety a priority this season” says Jack Cergol, chief staff executive for NSPI. “Swimming, water recreation, and water sports are excellent and healthy family activities and these safety tips provide layers of protection, so everyone can play it safe in and around water.”

NSPIÂ’s Water Safety Tips:

1. Supervision — Constant adult supervision is the primary precaution for which there is no substitute. Never take your eyes off a child when he or she is in or near a body of water, not even for a second. All other safety precautions should be used in addition to constant adult supervision. Don’t consider your child to be “drown-proof” because you enrolled them in swimming class.

2. Toys — Toys, tricycles and other playthings should be stored away from the pool or spa area. A favorite toy left near the water can be a very strong attraction for a child.

3. Substance-free — Never use a pool or spa while, or after, consuming alcohol or any drugs. Consult a physician if taking any medication on a regular basis prior to swimming or using a spa.

4. Diving — Know the depth of the water prior to diving, and never dive into shallow water. Never dive into an aboveground pool. Learn safe diving.

5. Fences and gates — Fencing should be at least four feet high. Check local regulations for specific requirements in your area.

6. Door and gate alarms — Many devices are available that attach to pool/spa access doors and gates that will sound a loud chime when opened and closed. And placing alarms on sliding doors, windows and all exit doors will alert you to children leaving the house.

7. Perimeter and motion alarms — Infrared detector beams are among the high-tech safety options now available at very affordable prices. Infrared systems sound an alarm when the beam is crossed, and can be installed around the perimeter of a pool or spa. Water motion alarms are placed in the water along the edge of the pool and sound an alarm when the water is disturbed in any way.

8. Latches and locks — Fence gates should have latches that automatically close and latch securely. Windows and doors that open to the pool or spa area should all be equipped with self-latching devices.

9. Safety covers — Get an impenetrable covering that completely covers the pool or spa, blocking access to water. Insist on a cover that has a label stating that it meets the ASTM F13-46 Standard for Pool and Spa Covers.

10. Portable telephone — A cordless or poolside phone means parents don’t have to leave children unattended while they answer the phone.

11. Ropes, life rings, shepherds crooks — Rope and float lines placed across the pool alert swimmers to the separation of the deep and shallow ends of the pool. Rescue equipment such as life rings and shepherd’s crooks can be used to pull someone in trouble to safety.

12. Emergency procedures — Learning CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a skill that may save a life. The local YMCA/YWCA, the Red Cross, and many local hospitals offer classes.

Whether you are wealthy or of very modest means, the most important reason you need an estate plan is to protect your loved ones. The keys to a good estate plan are simplicity, clarity. A complete estate plan should also include funeral and memorial arrangements.
