Joanna Track never knew success could taste so sweet. She is the head of Sweetspot. ca, Canada’s first online trend spotting lifestyle guide of its kind, keeping subscribers and visitors in-the-know and up-to-date on all things fun, fashionable and just plain fabulous in their city and across the country.

In fact the online venture is so sweet, Rogers Publishing recently acquired a minority interest in her unique website, providing an encouraging return on a business that started in a one bedroom apartment.

The idea for Sweetspot. ca started back in 2004. Track spent a year in New York as an account director at Ogilvy ad agency and became familiar with an online newsletter that helped her navigate through the city. Upon her return to Canada, she brainstormed ideas similar to the NY model, but was determined to create something distinctly Canadian (understanding that the audience and their buying habits are quite different this side of the border) and that's how Sweetspot was born.

Now Sweetspot. ca has several employees and services in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, and most recently in Calgary.

As a number of magazines are shutting down their print publications and switching to a web presence, it appears that Track herself is a trendsetter. She has identified her target market and simplified information for them. In fact, a June 2006 survey indicates that 85% of respondants are telling their friends about Sweetspot. ca.

"It was the Ogilvy experience that gave me such a great appreciation for brands and the strength they have to make or break a business," says Track, who originally majored in Math, but also holds an MBA. Naturally gifted with numbers, Joanna has now married her business acumen with her talent for marketing and strategy gleaned from working in the ad business to create Cananda’s latest online success story.

In spring 2006, Sweetspot. ca launched the first of its many planned spin-off projects, Sweetmama. ca – a weekly newsletter keeping subscribers on top of all that is fabulous for moms and kids. The Sweetspot. ca website will soon expand further to include greater and richer national and local editorial content on fashion and beauty, tips from top experts, event listings, entertainment and cultural happenings, Top Five must-haves for everything you can think of, feature stories and more.

Vision 2020 announces with pride the special guests for its “Celebration of American Women” on Oct. 21, 2010: Geena Davis, Mae Jemison and Jane Seymour. The three celebrities will participate in a 90-minute program focusing on women’s equality. Tickets go on sale Sept. 13.

The event is a cheerful pause in the midst of two days of serious debate and discussion about women’s equality during Vision 2020’s national conference: An American Conversation about Women and Leadership at the National Constitution Center.

The Celebration will pay tribute to women throughout history who have dedicated their lives to gender equality; applaud women’s successes; and anticipate a future where true sharing of leadership between men and women will inspire an unprecedented dimension of American excellence.

Geena Davis is an Academy Award-winning actress known for her portrayal of strong women characters in movies, including Thelma and Louise and A League of Their Own, as well as in the television series Commander-in-Chief. She is the founder of the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in the Media, which informs the public about the need to improve the representation of girls and women in media in children’s programming. Davis is also on the board of directors of The White House Project, a Vision 2020 National Ally.

Mae Jemison was the first African-American woman in space. She is also founder and president of two medical technology companies. Prior to joining NASA, Jemison worked in both engineering and medicine. She is a powerful voice for women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

Jane Seymour is a British actress, author, designer and artist. As the star of the American television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, she portrayed a character who attended Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, a predecessor institution of Drexel University College of Medicine.

"Hope Springs Eternal: A Rebirth of Haiti Through Art," an art exhibit and reception opens Fri., April 16, 5 p. m. to 8 p. m. at Summit Medical Group, 1 Diamond Hill Road, Berkeley Heights, NJ. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The multi-dimensional fundraiser features paintings by Haitian-born artists now living in the U. S. There will also be music, poetry and inspirational readings. Additionally, Summit Medical Group’s Chief Medical Officer, Robert W. Brenner, M. D., will speak about his recent medical relief visit to Haiti on behalf of The COTY Project. A portion of the proceeds will be donated for Haitian relief through the LANBI Center for Humanities and Civics, Inc. LANBI is a non-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement and development of the Haitian community.

The artists exhibiting their work include:

Jean-Philippe Blaise was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and is a relatively new artist. Blaise has been painting steadily since 2000 and has participated in numerous art expositions in the New York City metropolitan area.

Jean Richard Coachy was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Coachy studied art at the Calfou Club, Coop Artist and under Haitian master, Petion Savain. Coachy is also a respected art instructor in Haiti and in the United States and has participated in numerous exhibits in the United States, Europe and Haiti. Coachy’s paintings have also appeared in Jonathan Demme’s book, Island of Fire, and John Allen Franciscus’ book Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera.

Jean Claude Dominique was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He graduated from The Pratt Institute, with BA. in Fine Arts. Dominique has exhibited his work throughout the U. S., including Durham Performing Art Center (North Carolina); National Black McDonald Owners Association (Indianapolis, IN); Parklane (Chatham, NJ); Oscar Schindler Performing Art Center, (West Orange, NJ); Boxheart Gallery (Pittsburgh, PA); The Center of Hope Haiti (New York, NY).

Jean-Marie Eliscard was born in Cayes, Haiti. Eliscard studied art at the Academie Des Beaux Arts in Port-au-Prince and trained with some of the great masters in Haitian art: Raoul Dupoux, Jean-Rene Jerome, Rose-Marie Desruisseau, and Simil. Eliscard has participated in various art shows in Haiti, Canada and the United States and has received numerous awards at these shows.

Jerry MC Georges was born in St. Marc, Haiti. Georges is a traditional landscape and portrait artist, committed to helping the non-profit community. Christie’s Auction House sold a Georges painting for the Greenwich Country Day School.

Francisco Gervais was born in Gros-Morne, Haiti. In the early 1980s, Gervais learned the fundamental principles of painting while working with the prominent impressionist artist, Ernst Louizor. He has studied under Haitian art masters such as Dieudonné Louizor, Richard Barbot and art historian Michel-Philippe Lerebours.

Eric Girault was born in Jeremie, Haiti. Girault studied at the Brochette Studio School of Art. While at Brochette, Girault met the artists, Lazard, TiGa and Cedor, who became his best friends. Girault, along with his best friends, became four of Haiti’s most prominent artists. His works are included in the collections of Aristotle Onassis, Nelson Rockefeller and the former president of France, Valery Giscard D’Estaing.

Marino Jean-Louis was in raised Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His inspiration for his painting stems from meditation, spirituality, women, philosophy and a desire for peace. Jean-Louis’ work has been displayed in New York City’s City Hall building on several occasions.

Darly Raphaël was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Raphael studied art at Haiti's National Art School under Michel Prudent. Her inspiration comes from the everyday life experience, and political events. Darly’s artisitic vision is focused on the black culture and the legacy of the Haitian spirituality from generation to generation.

Joseph Thony "TiTonton" Moïse was born in Haiti. He studied art under Dewitt Peters at the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince. There, he met and studied with Normil, Lazare, Obas, and other great Haitian artists. Moise is best known for his painting "Dechoukaj" which means "Uprooting." "Dechoukaj" depicts the jubilation of the Haitian people at the end of the Duvalier regime in 1986. He has participated in numerous art expositions in Haiti, the United States, Canada and other countries.

The exhibit runs through July 10.

Pet Obesity Expanding in US

A new nationwide study indicates that pet obesity continues to expand. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), almost half of the nation's dogs and cats are now overweight or obese. The group conducted the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day study in October 2007 and found 43% of all dogs and 53% of all cats were classified as overweight or obese by a veterinary healthcare provider; 10% of all dogs and 19% of all cats were classified as obese.

The group conducted the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day study in October 2007 and found 43% of all dogs and 53% of all cats were classified as overweight or obese by a veterinary healthcare provider; 10% of all dogs and 19% of all cats were classified as obese.

"The startling fact was the number of obese cats," comments the study's lead investigator and founder of APOP, Dr. Ernie Ward. "We knew from a pilot study completed in early 2007 that obese cats were the fastest growing segment. It is alarming that almost one-in-five US cats is now clinically obese. This means we will continue to see an increase in cases of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other weight-related diseases."

The study also looked into pet owners' assessment of their dog's or cat's weight. "We found that the majority of pet owners understand that their pet is too heavy," notes Dr. Ward. In fact, 53% of dog owners with overweight or obese canines classified their dog correctly and 66% of cat owners with flabby felines stated that their cat was overweight or obese. "As we questioned pet owners further, we discovered that many of them had never been told that their dog or cat needed to shed a few pounds. I believe that in order to win the war on obesity it must begin with bilateral communication: pet owners need to ask if their pet is too heavy and veterinarians need to tell owners when a pet is overweight."

According to APOP estimates, this study indicates that as many as 32 million dogs and 46 million cats in the US are overweight or obese. Almost 8 million dogs and 17 million cats are thought to be obese.

"Carrying a little extra weight isn't a stable condition that's simply annoying or unsightly. Fat is biologically active tissue and an excess amount negatively impacts almost every body system," states Dr. Ward. "We're in real danger of raising an entire generation of pets that will live a shorter life expectancy than the dogs and cats we enjoyed as children."

The nationwide study was conducted in 98 small animal veterinary clinics and included 704 dogs and 283 cats.

Levinsohn is an attorney and businessman involved in numerous real estate and private equity transactions over the past 15 years. Do you enjoy working with children? Currently we are preparing our summer programming for children and teens, including a month-long Fun Camp for kids ages 3-12. This summer’s theme for Fun Camp is the environment, with all activities, fun and educational, relating to this important topic. We are also coaching and developing two youth sports teams, one boys football (soccer) team, and one girls netball team. If you are interested in camp counseling, tutoring, coaching, cheerleading, and making a big difference in a child’s life, we need your help! Bring your passions with you and lead your favorite arts and crafts activity, or design a seminar for teens about your career or major. Join us for our Back2School event on Saturday August 26th, where scholarships are awarded and backpacks filled with new school supplies are distributed to the students, followed up by a dance party! Once school starts in the fall, guest speakers and teachers are always welcome and after-school tutoring and support is needed.

Do you have experience or interest in health care services? Since our health clinic opened in February, we have seen over 300 patients, saving them time and money of traveling to another town to have simple but necessary checkups. The clinic is open with a nurse on duty twice a week. We hope to increase our partnerships with volunteers with specialties in health care services, including professional doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists, and gynecologists. Whether you have a knack of organizing filing systems, have a special touch and enjoyment for blood pressure checks, or are a practicing doctor, there are many needs for health care and education.

Are you handy with tools or motivated by physical work? Soon we will be starting our second phase of our clinic construction, laying a concrete roof on the space adjacent to our operating clinic. This expansion, which will add a formal waiting room area, office space, and restroom, will be an ongoing project over the next year. This fall we will also be working on building a retaining wall to support the eroding road that leads to the clinic as well as refurbishing the community ballground for local football teams to be able practice and have matches. There are ongoing projects of light construction and beautification, such as painting and trash collection, so we have projects for every skill level.

The Service Learning Program through Blue Mountain Project is more than just a volunteer program. This program is wonderful opportunity to achieve two very important humanitarian goals: to build personal awareness through challenging experiences and to build global awareness through cultural exchange. It is a chance to experience another culture by living and working in the community, sharing your knowledge and stories with local community members and other volunteers and learn from them as well.

We accept individuals and groups up to 15 for stays from one day to one year. Finish out the summer by volunteering with us! Spend this year’s Labor Day weekend reading to a child or leading a health care workshop. In order to begin the registration process for our program email at carrie@bluemountainproject. org. We ask that you submit your application at least 45 days before your intended travel dates. Please choose three prospective dates that you are available for the program as we fill up quickly. In general, please be sure to give at least 3 non familial references on your application, choosing individuals who can fill out of reference form in a timely manner. As an organization, we are required to have these forms before being able to confirm your placement in the program.

Exploring the First Stage Implementation Results of Pfizer's RFID Pilot Program

After an employer in Michigan implemented a policy prohibiting employees from smoking, even in non-work hours, Safety. BLR. com conducted a national poll of health and safety managers. The results: Employers shouldnÂ’t be allowed to fire workers who smoke away from work, according to nearly three-quarters (72 percent) of those who responded.

Twenty percent of respondents said employers should be allowed to fire someone who smokes in non-work hours. The remaining 8 percent said they were unsure. Firing smokers is a hot-button topic—more than 900 people cast their votes in the poll. It was conducted during the week of February 8 by Safety. BLR. com, a website that makes safety training and compliance easier.

Something has to give in healthcare costs Weyco Inc., a benefits administrator based in Okemos, Michigan, gave workers time to quit and initiated a mandatory testing program. The founder of the company, Howard Weyers, says heÂ’s trying to fight rising healthcare costs with the no-smoking policy. Michigan has no law protecting smokers from discrimination, but more than half of U. S. states have laws with some sort of protection.

Sean Dean, editor at Safety. BLR. com, predicted that more employers facing double-digit healthcare cost increases will implement similar policies if their state allows them. “Something has to give in healthcare, and smokers are an easy target. They tend to become sick more frequently and more seriously, miss more work, and take more breaks. We’re even beginning to see companies that are asking employees to state that none of their dependents are smokers,” he added. Critics of no-smoking policies that cover non-work hours wonder whether employers will try barring other employee activities that take place outside of work, such as alcohol consumption.

Dr. Berg, D. C. in Virginia was not satisfied with using his typical approach whereby a patient would have to come to the office over and over and over again in a never ending program. Through investigating literally thousands of inflammatory cases, Dr. Berg tracked down the different sources of inflammation.

The missing link was in the investigation of finding the true problem. Many practitioners just don’t go deep enough to find the true mechanism involved. Dr. Berg found that inflammation could come from many different sources – pinched nerve, a failing adrenal gland (adrenal gland depleted of its anti-inflammatory hormones), a pathogen creating constant immune response type inflammation, referral pain from an organ, damaged ligament, tendon or muscle, scar tissue, muscle in protect mode compensating from something else and an altered pH systemically (acid-based level – if the body is too alkaline, it can accumulate calcium on the nerves and tendons causing bursitis and nerve pain).

This natural technique has a unique way of assessing the body to find the problem. It uses acupressure on specific acupuncture points to correct the body’s malfunction. The body is similar to a computer and Dr. Berg found a way to tap into this system and clear up the body’s confusions. Dr. Berg found that many of these chronic pain syndromes are confusions in the brain. The brain is supposed to filter 99.99% of the sensory information that is not needed. But when pain is involved the brain deals with inflammation differently. The information can many times overload the circuits creating continual pain in another part of the body. Does Your Dog Bite? MuttShack Foster Foundation Advises How to Protect Your Dog and Yourself from Liability

MuttShack Foundation for Animal Foster and Rescue, claim that dogs bite more than 4.7 million people every year in the United States.

The blame could be the dogÂ’s, the ownerÂ’s, or the victimÂ’s. But the one who invariably pays, is the owner. The owner of the dog becomes responsible for paying for the medical bills, time lost from work as well as pain and suffering. The one who suffers most, is the dog that is abandoned in a shelter or disposed of.

Dog owners should assume more than their share of the responsibility for protecting people and other animals from their dogs, and also assume the responsibility to protect their dogs from people. Kids will run up to a dog screaming in delight and frighten the dog. A dog in his excitement to greet someone may jump up and scratch him or her. A passer-by may approach a dog aggressively or provoke him. Neighborhood kids may let the dogs out just to have some fun.

There is no way to guarantee that your dog will never bite someone. But you can significantly reduce the risk:

• Spay or neuter your dog. This important and routine procedure will reduce your dog's desire to roam and fight with other dogs, making safe confinement an easier task. Spayed or neutered dogs are much less likely to bite.

• Socialize your dog. Introduce your dog to many different types of people and situations so that he or she is not nervous or frightened under normal social circumstances.

• Train your dog. Accompanying your dog to a training class is an excellent way to socialize him and to learn proper training techniques. Training your dog is a family matter. Every member of your household should learn the training techniques and participate in your dog's education. Never send your dog away to be trained; only you can teach your dog how to behave in your home. Note that training classes are a great investment even for experienced dog caregivers.

• Be alert with your dog around children. Rambunctious play may startle your dog, and he may react by snapping or biting. Neighborhood children may be attracted to your dog, so make sure you have a child-proof lock on your gate and there is no way for little hands to get through the fence.

• Teach your dog appropriate behavior. Never teach your dog to chase after or attack others, even in fun. Your dog can't always understand the difference between play and real-life situations. Set appropriate limits for your dog's behavior.

Don't wait for an accident.

The first time he exhibits dangerous behavior toward any person, seek professional help from your veterinarian, an animal behaviorist, or a qualified dog trainer. Dangerous behavior toward other animals may eventually lead to dangerous behavior toward people, and is also a reason to seek professional help.

• Be a responsible dog owner. License your dog as required by law, and provide regular veterinary care, including rabies vaccinations. For everyone's safety, don't allow your dog to roam alone. Make your dog a member of your family. Dogs who spend a great deal of time alone in the backyard or tied on a chain often become dangerous. Dogs who are well socialized and supervised are much less likely to bite.

• Stay on the safe side. If you don't know how your dog will react to a new situation, be cautious. If your dog may panic in crowds, leave him at home. If your dog overreacts to visitors or delivery or service personnel, keep him in another room. Work with professionals to help your dog become accustomed to these and other situations. Until you are confident of his behavior, however, avoid stressful settings.

Seriously, if your dog bites someone, act responsibly; take these steps to mitigate the harm:

• Confine your dog immediately and check on the victim's condition. If necessary, seek medical help.

• Provide the victim with important information, such as the date of your dog's last rabies vaccination.

• You should cooperate fully with the animal control official responsible for acquiring information about your dog. If your dog must be quarantined for any length of time, ask whether he may be confined within your home or at your veterinarian's hospital. Strictly follow quarantine requirements for your dog.

• Seek professional help to prevent your dog from biting again. Consult with your veterinarian, who may refer you to an animal behaviorist or a dog trainer. Your community animal care and control agency or humane society may also offer helpful services.

If you have to let your dog go, don't drop him off at a shelter, where he will only be given a few days to live. Take the time to find him a new family. • If your dog's dangerous behavior cannot be controlled, and you have to make the painful decision to give him up, do not give him to someone else without carefully evaluating that person's ability to protect your dog and prevent him from biting. Because you know your dog is dangerous, you may be held liable for any damage he does even when he is given to someone else.

• Never give your dog to someone who wants a dangerous dog. "Mean" dogs are often forced to live miserable, isolated lives, and become even more likely to attack someone in the future. If you must give up your dog due to dangerous behavior, consult with your veterinarian and with your local animal care and control agency or humane society about your options. Be safe, be responsible and most importantly, teach your dog to be a good canine citizen.

• Your dog lives to make you happy. If he understands what you need from him, he will make you proud.
