Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 10, 2005—When you want your voice heard in Washington, conventional wisdom says to call your Congressman. But as local businessman Bill McKay found out, the process of getting heard by the powers that be is a quagmire of empty promises, inaction and false hope.

As background, McKay owns a small defense contracting company that makes widgets that the military canÂ’t do without. Put very simply, without parts from McKayÂ’s company, F-22 Raptors, C-5s, C-17s and Blackhawk helicopters, for example, canÂ’t fly. Los Angeles, Ohio and Virginia class submarines canÂ’t sail. Nimitz-class carriers canÂ’t launch aircraft. And the Abrams M-1A1 canÂ’t shoot straight.

Far from ordinary widgets, these precision-tooled parts are made from exotic, aerospace-grade metals to military-spec, each taking up to 1,200 man-hours to make. So you would think that letting Washington know of an impending parts shortage that is sure to bring the military to a virtual standstill might get some attention, right? You know the answer.

Since starting the process of getting heard just over six months ago, McKay has had the doors slammed in his face from everyone from his local Congressman (Representative David Dreier) to the Undersecretary of Defense (Michael Wynne) and a lot of people in between (Rep. Jerry Lewis, Rep. Duncan Hunter, Sen. John McCain, Sen. John Warner and ranking members of the Senate and House Armed Services committees). Today, that impending parts shortage has become an imminent parts shortage, a situation McKay says is too late to avoid.

“Our company is a sole or primary source manufacturer of mission critical parts used in virtually every aircraft, submarine and tracked ground warfare system in our nation’s military arsenal,” McKay said. “We’re going to have a lot of downtime of assets, and while the Navy, Air Force, Marines and Army might be willing to let it happen so they don’t rock the boat at the Pentagon, the President is not going to be very happy at all.”

The Navy estimated that down time for subs waiting for these parts will be measured in quarters of a year rather than days or weeks. It also determined that should McKayÂ’s company be sidestepped, it would cost nearly $17 million to reverse engineer all the parts designed and built solely by the company.

Today, McKayÂ’s company stands at the brink of bankruptcy as it has tried to do the right thing by keeping itÂ’s skilled employees from leaving while having its accounts receivables extended by its customers to 120-plus days, and in the process, has overextended itself by putting out its own money to do so. McKay has extinguished all his personal resources to pay employee payroll, health insurance premiums and to purchase manufacturing supplies. His companyÂ’s 48 employees (90% minority, 20% handicapped, 10% veteran, 10% former gang members) face the arduous task of finding new jobs.

“The way our company has been treated is a comedy of errors, miscalculation and analytical blunders,” said McKay. “We’re a small, family-owned company with no political connections. I’d like to think that a campaign contribution is not the only way to get someone’s attention, but quite frankly I don’t know how else it’s done. If an impending crisis in the military is not enough, if the loss of jobs for 48 employees is not enough, what is?”

Paul Baier, 22-month-old son of Fox News anchor Bret Baier and his wife Amy, required a complicated surgery for five congenital heart defects when he was just 12 days old. After Paul was treated at Children's National Medical Center, the Baiers and the Hills made a generous gift to the Children's National Heart Institute to advance the treatment of children with congenital heart disease. Injury or harm as a result of medical treatment is distressingly common, estimated by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement at 15 million instances a year. In the aftermath of such an adverse medical event, patients and their loved ones often have a strong need to share information about their experience. In the United States and Canada, however, there is no comprehensive system in place to capture and disseminate information on adverse events, and patients often feel excluded and unheard.

The Coalition's 40-question survey is designed to include details to help identify the common factors associated with medical harm and can be accessed at http://www. empoweredpatientcoalition. org/report-a-medical-event/report-an-adverse-event (http://www. empoweredpatientcoalition. org/report-a-medical-event/report-an-adverse-event). The survey includes sections on topics including infection, surgical complications, childbirth-related events, medication administration, and health care providers' responses in the wake of the adverse event. The survey can be taken anonymously to protect the privacy of patients or other reporters. because the survey is voluntary, its results are not considered scientific. It is intended to provide a snapshot of medical harm from the patient's perspective, and to provide a glimpse into patterns that may help patients avoid future harm.

"The public is a valuable resource for adverse event reporting and should be called upon to help drive improvement efforts," said Dr. Julia Hallisy with The Empowered Patient Coalition. "It's time to draw on the collective experiences and wisdom of the people who are receiving medical care each and every day. Patients are the foundation of all patient empowerment efforts and both their input and their specific health care experiences are vital to efforts to achieve important patient safety goals."
