Academy of Art University Presents Junk Mail: From Debris to Design

Academy of Art University Presents Junk Mail: From Debris to Design

Top art school students create artwork for Bay Area environmental campaign.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 24, 2008

As a part of its dedication to the environment, Academy of Art University has incorporated "green" and sustainable practices not only into its curriculum, but also into its facilities and services. The Academy held Junk Mail: From Debris to Design at 79 Gallery featuring a cross-section of environmental art, ranging from larger than life-size sculptures to fashion designs.

Impassioned by the goal of the Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC) to stop junk mail, students from the Academy of Art University's fashion school (http://www. academyart. edu/fashion-school/index. html), fine art school (http://www. academyart. edu/fine-art-school/index. html), graphic design school (http://www. academyart. edu/graphic-design-school/index. html) and industrial design school have imaginative artworks across a variety of mediums using junk mail from San Francisco mailboxes.

Two sculptures titled Crush and The Mailbox Monster evoke the waste inherent to America's vast junk mail production and distribution. MFA Sculpture students conceived Crush, a larger-than-life portrait of an individual who has the power to block junk mail. BFA Sculpture students emphasize the importance of looking beyond just recycling junk mail and propose creative, environmental solutions with The Mailbox Monster.

"These students are committed to changes for positive growth within their community, bringing their own spirit of humor and invention to a project with possible far-reaching environmental impact, above and beyond the existent requirements of their coursework," said Associate Director of Fine Art Sculpture Margaret Keelan.

The average American adult receives and disposes of approximately 41 pounds of junk mail each year. It takes 17 trees to make a ton of paper; 42% of timber harvested nationwide becomes paper pulp. The Academy of Art University's Junk Mail: From Debris to Design encourages consumers to fight back against this insidious industry.

"Academy student creations for the Stop Junk Mail Campaign provide outstanding proof of the leading role artists and designers can take in motivating people to create healthy changes to reduce consumption of and safeguard precious environmental resources," says Academy of Art University President Elisa Stephens.

San Francisco is the foundation of Academy of Art University -- its natural beauty and cultural diversity serves as constant artistic inspiration. As a way of expressing its gratitude toward the city, the Academy is dedicated to preserving its environment, enriching the community and reaching out to those in need. The Academy has been an enthusiastic leader in San Francisco's commitment to the environment and sustainability, since it was one of the founding downtown institutions to visibly support Mayor Gavin Newsom's call for energy conservation.

The Academy of Art University is honored to partner with SF Environment, an active member of BayROC, a collaboration between staff representing over 40 San Francisco Bay Area cities, counties and other public agencies working together on waste reduction and recycling programs. Their website www. stopjunkmail. org offers tips for reducing junk mail.

Eating Disorders Field Still Growing Despite Recession

Eating Disorders Field Still Growing Despite Recession

Unemployment is not an issue among eating disorder treatment professionals. As health insurance coverage and awareness of treatment options climb, specialists in the field are still hard to find. Jobs are also open to marketing professionals and other non-medical workers, but open positions are not well publicized. A new website, EatingDisorderJobs. com, will alert job seekers to these job opportunities.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) September 15, 2009

As diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders improves, the need for treatment options increases, and the number of treatment facilities is on the rise. Recessionary conditions have not affected hiring in this industry, and job opportunities range from administrative professionals and marketing reps to clinicians such as nurses, therapists, and dietitians.

Job openings in the eating disorders field, although numerous, are poorly publicized, often hidden on treatment center websites that attract mostly patients looking for care. Anyone looking for work in the field knows their first job is just finding open positions. It's a tough biz to break into, and if you don't have a network, you don't have a chance.

But that's all about to change. With today's launch of EatingDisorderJobs. com (http://www. eatingdisorderjobs. com), the wide world of eating disorders careers is open for business. As the only website dedicated to jobs in the field of eating disorders treatment, EatingDisorderJobs. com provides guidance and opportunities for recent grads looking for work, seasoned professionals open to change, and students planning ahead. They will all find a buffet of information - current job openings, career advice, continuing education, and more - all in one convenient and free location.

Owner Jessica Setnick says, "America is finally waking up to eating disorders as a problem with solutions. People are seeking help in numbers higher than ever before. But the field has traditionally been a 'who you know' profession. Finally there are so many jobs that none of us knows enough qualified people. This website will bring the employers and the job seekers together for the first time."

Current job seekers on the site include a chef and a videographer, in addition to the many expected therapists and clinicians. They all share the hope of a job that means something. Many are recovered and planning to give back to the profession that helped them during their own eating disorder. "The highlight of EatingDisorderJobs. com is the Advice from the Experts (http://www. eatingdisorderjobs. com/expertadvice. php)," says a member of the site, now recovered from anorexia and in school to become a dietitian. "It gives me hope that when I finish school I can be out there helping girls like me."

New Company Makes Dietary Supplementation for Women Easy

New Company Makes Dietary Supplementation for Women Easy

NutraOrigin, a new web-based company that caters specifically to women, has taken the guesswork out of supplementation by identifying 11 different women’s health matters and then grouping 2-3 synergistic products into specialized supplement “suites” to address each matter.

Lake Success, NY (PRWEB) September 7, 2006

Polls consistently show that women have a keen interest in taking dietary supplements. But with the vast selection of products available on the shelves today, deciding which supplements to take has become a monumental task. Do you need more than a multivitamin? What about calcium, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids? And how do you know if these products are safe to combine with each other? It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin.

Fortunately, women no longer have to be nutritionists to buy their vitamins. nutraOrigin, a new web-based company that caters specifically to women, has taken the guesswork out of supplementation by identifying 11 different women’s health matters and then grouping 2-3 synergistic products into specialized supplement “suites” to address each matter.

“The beauty of the suite approach is that women don’t have to worry about mixing and matching products or wondering if one supplement is safe to take with another,” said nutraOrigin marketing director Katia Lundy. “You just pick the health matter you want to address, and we’ve already grouped together all the products you need.” While the company recommends purchasing an entire product suite, individual formulas are also for sale individually.

The 11 different women’s health matters nutraOrigin has identified include: blood sugar balance; cardiovascular health; metabolism and weight loss; cellular health; detoxification; general wellness; hair, skin and nail beauty; menopause relief; bone health; pre-menstrual relief and pre-natal health. Each health matter is addressed with a suite of products that work together to produce a synergistic effect. For example, the SynerBalance Suite of products, which targets metabolism and weight loss, includes three products: Nutra Multi, Glycemic Balance and Cardio Balance. Nutra Multi is a high-potency multivitamin and mineral that supplies all the necessary vitamins and minerals for optimal health – including 500 mg of calcium. Glycemic Balance helps balance blood sugar levels, which is key to efficient weight loss. And Cardio Balance, which supports healthy cholesterol levels, is included in the mix because people with metabolic problems often have elevated cholesterol.

Taking convenience to the next level, nutraOrigin offers a program called the Total Health Plan, which allows for automatic delivery of a customer’s chosen supplements to her home or office. Women who sign up for the autoship program get preferred pricing and free shipping and handling. They also get to choose whether they want to be on a 15, 30, 45, or 60-day delivery cycle.

But convenience isn’t the only thing the company offers – product quality is just as important. nutraOrigin has an interdisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians that formulates each product based on a careful review of scientific evidence. The supplements are manufactured in a GMP (good manufacturing practices) certified facility by trained experts. And each product undergoes rigorous testing for purity and quality before being shipped. “Our entire goal is to help women unlock their true potential by manufacturing the highest quality nutritional supplements and providing them in a way that is simple and convenient to use,” said Lundy.

Founded in 2005, nutraOrigin offers a line of dietary supplements catered specifically to women. The company offers 11 different “suites” of products to address women’s top health concerns, such as bone health, metabolism and weight loss, and detoxification. Manufactured according to exacting quality standards, nutraOrigin supplements are available for purchase on the company website: www. nutraorigin. com or by calling 1-800-71-NUTRA (1-800-716-8872). For more information on nutraOrigin, visit the website, or call Katia Lundy at (516) 437-6363 ext. 2203.

Affordable Autism Treatment Moves A Step Closer - simplestepsautism. com

Affordable Autism Treatment Moves A Step Closer - simplestepsautism. com

Global behavior experts, Simple Steps, are leading the way in providing affordable autism treatment by introducing two brand new price options. For only £39 ($62.40), parents can access Simple Steps’ ground-breaking online teaching tool (http://www. simplestepsautism. com). With memberships already selling worldwide, the new price plans will offer hope to even more families facing the daily struggle against autism.

(PRWEB) November 30, 2010

Globally renowned for responding to parents’ needs, Simple Steps reacted immediately to requests for more pricing options. Professor Lester Manley, Chairman of Simple Steps, commented: “We pride ourselves on our relationships with the parents and families who use our products – they asked for this and we are glad to be able to respond quickly.”

A new one-month (trial) contract and a three-month contract have now been introduced, the cost of which will be deducted from any license upgrade. Dr Tony Byrne, Director of Simple Steps and Chairman of parent-led Autism Charity, PEAT (Parents’ Education as Autism Therapists) said: “We fully understand the harsh economic times families everyone faces and we’re glad to be able to offer these new options.”

So what is it? Simple Steps created the world’s first parent-led, interactive online teaching-tool for autism. Building on the experiences of real families, the product unites the worlds of science, academia, charity, health, and innovation to introduce parents to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) – the only scientifically validated treatment for autism.

Widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment, ABA is endorsed by the U. S. Surgeon General and the New York State Department of Health. A much needed boost in support for families, the tool also helps to ease the strain on over-burdened health services. Although not designed to replace a qualified Behavior Analyst, Simple Steps offers parents the chance to embrace the challenge of ABA and create a brighter future for their child.

The interactive web-tool aims to help every child rise to their potential by giving parents affordable access to resources they desperately need. With guidance from ABA experts, real-life footage, dynamic teaching animations, a supportive online community, and much more, members can take their first crucial steps to becoming ‘parent-therapists’ through e-learning.

The new device promises to make life safer and easier for elderly people, chronically ill patients, children and lone workers. SKeeper™ is intended to provide peace of mind for its users, their families and caregivers. It enables users to carry on with their daily routines without compromising safety and well being, by enabling them to stay in touch with relatives and caregivers in case of need. With SKeeper™ elderly people get immediate assistance by simply pressing a single button on the device, and parents can rest assured that their children can easily contact them should they be lost or need assistance.

"SKeeper™ is taking Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) and social alarm systems, to the next level," says Ofer Atzmon, business development manager at Tadiran LifeCare, "Fitted with a dedicated safety call button it can activate a warning signal or initiate a voice call in case of need, enabling wearers to get immediate care and assistance."

Using its embedded Siemens MC55 wireless module and built-in speakerphone, SKeeper™ can activate cellular voice calls to pre-defined numbers (e. g. a relative or a health professional) or receive calls from anyone. Most of the product features, such as speed dialing numbers, auto-answering, predefined text messages, etc. are remotely programmable by the monitoring center, or by the users or their authorized relatives via a Web based interface.

In such cases the system sends automatic alerts via SMS messages to the monitoring center and/or to another mobile phone. Tadiran LifeCare plans to launch a GPS based system, with higher location accuracy, later this year.

The unit is lightweight and easy to operate. It is wrist or neck wearable and can be carried on a belt or in the pocket. It is compact enough to fit on the arms of children. Acclaimed Recording Artist Matthew Zachary Supports MelissaÂ’s Living Legacy Foundation (MLLF)!

Acclaimed Musician/Composer/Cancer Survivor Announces That a 50% Portion of Proceeds from Hit Album “Scribblings” Will Benefit Respected Foundation

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 24, 2003

Celebrated musician, speaker, and cancer survivor Matthew Zachary is extremely proud to announce a cause-marketing alliance with MelissaÂ’s Living Legacy Foundation (MLLF). Based out of Rochester, New York, and located on the world wide web at http://www. teenslivingwithcancer. org (http://www. teenslivingwithcancer. org), MLLF is a strategic partner of the Children's Oncology Group, and is dedicated to assisting, supporting, and inspiring the approximately 15,000 teenagers who must undergo cancer treatment in the United States each year.

Therefore, from the current date through the end of the month of October, 2003, for every copy of Scribblings sold, Matthew Zachary Music will donate fifty percent (50%) of the proceeds directly to MLLF.

The goal of Melissa’s Living Legacy is to assist teens facing cancer to spread their wings and fly. Despite the common desire to be “normal,” teenagers facing cancer are instead singled out by their circumstances, and are often compelled to follow other paths, other roads less traveled. The current goal on behalf of Matthew Zachary for Melissa’s Living Legacy is to reach at least $5000 in sales (or 667 units), an achievement Zachary calls “Phase 1.”

“I’m very proud to be able to contribute to such a tremendous organization,” comments Zachary. “Melissa’s Living Legacy Foundation was founded to help, support and inspire teens living with cancer, and to honor the courage, heart, humor and hope with which so many teenagers face their illnesses. And as a survivor of a rare form of pediatric brain cancer myself, I know the incredible inspiration this kind of organization can provide, and am delighted to be able to support them through my music.”

About Melissa's Living Legacy Foundation (MLLF)

Melissa's Living Legacy Foundation sponsors Teens Living with Cancer (www. teenslivingwithcancer. org), and was founded to honor the inspiring life journey of Melissa Sengbusch, who died on June 22, 2000 at age 19, after living with a rare bone marrow cancer for more than two years. The group's vision is that all teens with cancer continue to receive opportunities for meaningful, life-affirming experiences, beginning at diagnosis, continuing through treatment and remission and, if necessary, when facing death. The Foundation provides resources to help teens living with cancer meet their life challenges in productive, creative, and satisfying ways.

Melissa's Living Legacy also addresses issues relevant to the families and friends of teens living with cancer, as well as to healthcare professionals who care for them. Together, Melissa's Living Legacy and TLC provide an array of resources to support teens, their families and friends, focusing on challenging teen issues, and presenting information about cancer and treatment written at teens' level of interest. The group also provides teens with opportunities to interact with other teens living with cancer, as well as links to additional relevant sites, information, and resources. Contact them at info@teenslivingwithcancer. org.

Haskell Selected to Complete Design/Build for Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego

Haskell Selected to Complete Design/Build for Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego

The Haskell Company announces it has been selected by Advanced Particle Therapy LLC and Scripps Health to provide design/build services for the Scripps Proton Therapy Center to be located in San Diego, Calif.

Jacksonville, Fla. (Vocus) July 2, 2010

The Haskell Company (http://haskell. com/en) announces it has been selected by Advanced Particle Therapy LLC (http://www. advancedparticletherapy. com) and Scripps Health (http://www. scripps. org/) to provide design/build services for the Scripps Proton Therapy Center to be located in San Diego, Calif. The cutting-edge outpatient cancer treatment facility will feature 102,000 square feet of administrative and treatment area and will include one proton particle beam accelerator Cyclotron, two fixed-beam rooms, and three rotational beam gantries. This equipment will be provided by Varian Medical Systems, the recognized world leader in radiation oncology devices. Proton treatment is the favored method of treating certain types of tumors, such as prostate, brain and pediatric cancers, without severely damaging the surrounding healthy tissues.

“With only seven Proton Treatment Centers operating in the United States, we are honored to work with Scripps and Haskell to create a state-of-the-art facility that will treat patients in the greater San Diego and California region,” said Jeffrey Bordok, president and CEO of Advanced Particle Therapy LLC, a company that teams with clients seeking a complete turnkey solution to the implementation of a particle therapy cancer treatment center.

Construction on the Scripps Proton Therapy Center will begin in July and the first patient treatment is expected to occur in February 2013. Upon completion, the Scripps Proton Therapy Center will be operated by Scripps, under the medical direction of the Scripps Clinic Medical Group, and will treat approximately 2,400 patients annually.

Signet Development will serve as the lead developer for the Scripps Proton Therapy Center and Haskell has been selected to provide the design/build services for the space that will house the state-of-the-art equipment, which is custom designed and must be constructed to meet very tight tolerance requirements for proper installation.

“Our unique integrated design/build capabilities allow us to provide the needed expertise to create the space and design work for this highly-specialized treatment center,” said Paul Tyler, president of Haskell’s Commercial Group. “We are honored to work with the partners in this project and look forward to building the Scripps Proton Therapy Center to better serve patients in the greater California area.”

Proton treatment is made possible by a Varian 250 MeV Superconducting Cyclotron. Varian’s 250 MeV cyclotron is proven technology designed for high-efficiency, low-energy consumption, high reliability and modern treatment features such as pencil beam scanning, sometimes referred to as spot scanning, which enables beam intensity modulation. Intensity-modulated proton therapy makes it possible to shape the dose distribution very precisely in order to concentrate the does on the targeted tumor while sparing normal, healthy tissues.

Through ionization, the Cyclotron separates a hydrogen atom’s protons from its electrons and, by use of electric and magnetic fields, accelerates at near light speed the proton beam into treatment rooms. The center will include five treatment rooms, two of which will provide a fixed beam and three of which will include a rotational beam. Each room will contain highly sophisticated electromagnet beam directional equipment, weighing 150 tons per piece, to deliver the proton beam to the patient. Additional space at the proton treatment center will include clinical diagnostic and treatment preparation rooms as well as medical office space and a reception area.

“As the only accredited cancer network in the San Diego region, Scripps is proud to bring proton therapy – the most advanced and precise form of radiation therapy – to our patients. The Scripps Proton Therapy Center is part of our 86-year legacy of bringing innovative treatments that focus on what’s best for the patient,” said Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps Health.

Meet a Scientologist: Sussex inventor Saves Millions of Lives with Special Syringe

Meet a Scientologist: Sussex inventor Saves Millions of Lives with Special Syringe

In a video featured on the new Scientology Video Channel at http://www. Scientology. org, Marc Koska talks about his determination to make injection-transmission of HIV/AIDS a thing of the past.

Henderson, NV (Vocus) October 4, 2010

In a video featured on the new Scientology Video Channel at http://www. Scientology. org, Marc Koska talks about his determination to make injection-transmission of HIV/AIDS a thing of the past.

Inventor Marc Koska is a man with a mission—saving lives. In 1984, as the world was learning of a new disease called HIV/AIDS, Koska, then 23, read an article predicting that unsafe injections would spread the disease like a plague.

That's when his life changed.

“Appalled at the prospect of such an avoidable catastrophe, I decided there and then to try and do something about it,” the father of three from Sussex, England, writes on his website.

He set out to invent an inexpensive syringe that could be used only once, thus thwarting the spread of the disease through repeat injections. Although his concept was in place, Koska had no idea how to go about it.

“My ignorance of healthcare systems and syringes was complete—and the only thing I had ever manufactured was excuses,” Koska says. But he went to work on the problem and after many years of research, the “K1” was born—the world’s first auto-disabled syringe. In a nutshell, the syringe self-destructs after one injection.

In 2001, the K1 was adopted by UNICEF for immunization. Auto-disable syringes have since become the norm for disease prevention, but immunization accounts for just 5 percent of injections.

Koska, though gratified by the UNICEF adoption of his technology, was still concerned about the 95 percent of injections that still put lives at risk from re-used needles.

Traditional syringes are disposable, but unscrupulous doctors and desperate people, particularly in the developing world, buy used syringes and use them over and over. Every year, according to The World Health Organization, 1.3 million people die from diseases caused by non-sterile needles and 22 million more are infected with hepatitis and HIV.

“That is precisely why I formed the Safepoint charity in 2005,” says Koska. Safepoint’s mission is to inform parents and children around the world of the dangers of non-sterile injections and how to avoid them.

“We teach them that the syringe must come in a packet, be used once and then must be destroyed, put in a safety box and discarded properly,” Koska says.

With the blessing of numerous health ministers, Koska has set up Safepoint centres in seven countries including India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Each centre trains and employs local staff who spread the message in schools, clinics and local communities.

Koska became a Scientologist in 1992. “I was always absolutely certain there was a system out there that would help Mankind and I was very eager to find it. My wife and I read many, many books and listened to hundreds of tapes trying to find the answer from motivational speakers, religious leaders, philosophers. It became a fantastic mission to try to find the right solution. Nothing really satisfied us and we knew that there was something better and bigger out there,” he says.

A friend introduced him to Dianetics. “I read the first 50 pages and knew that I’d found the answer. It literally answered all the very sophisticated questions I had about life—questions I thought no one else had ever thought of. I knew that I’d found what I’d been looking for,” Koska says.

“You read a piece of data which is very true to you and it just becomes part of you—you apply it on a continual basis. I suppose the easiest way to explain it is it’s just easier to get over problems. You can handle things a lot better and if you confront a problem, you can get through it very easily and make progress very quickly.”

Koska feels Scientology has made it possible for him to accomplish his life-saving mission: “It’s being able to reach out and get in touch with people you would normally think wouldn’t be possible.”

He also credits the encouragement of those nearest and dearest to him. “I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of my family,” says Koska. “But parenthood only reinforces your determination to protect other families from what is an entirely preventable human tragedy. Preventable tragedy makes me angry. It’s a terrible waste, and there’s still so much more to be done.”

Koska was awarded an OBE in 2006 for his contribution to Global Healthcare, having successfully pushed to table legislation to prevent syringe re-use in over 15 countries.

PLUM Bottle Belt Bags Give Workers Access to Eye First Aid at all Times

PLUM Bottle Belt Bags Give Workers Access to Eye First Aid at all Times

Plum Belt Bags let mobile workers keep eye wash first aid with them at all times. Each bag holds a 200ml bottle of Plum sterile saline or pH neutralizing solution for quick, immediate relief when foreign substances enter the eye.

Pequannock, NJ (PRWEB) June 23, 2010

By the very nature of their ever changing work area, mobile workers are faced with some inherent safety risks. Accidents can and do happen while workers are on the road or at remote job sites. Vehicle or tool box first aid kits are one important component to ensuring appropriate response to accidents. Now, a quick response time to eye injuries can be assured through the use of PLUM 200ml Bottle Belt Bags.

Robert N. Petersen, Product Manager for Bel-Art Products the exclusive United States distributor of Denmark based PLUM eye and skin wash first aid products explains that "the belt bags hold a 200 ml bottle of PLUM Sterile Saline or pH Neutralizing eye wash and have built-in loops to easily attach to belts, coveralls and backpacks. If needed, the bottle can be quickly accessed by pulling up the cover which is secured with hook and loop strips."

Petersen went on to add "with an eye injury, you want fast effective relief. In the case of acids or alkalis in the eye, permanent damage to the cornea can occur in as little as 45 seconds so fast response is crucial. PLUM pH neutralizing eye wash effectively neutralizes acids and alkalis in no more than 20 seconds. Having first aid on your person in a designated carrier pouch eliminates wasted time running to another location to find a first aid kit or search for a bottle."

PLUM 200ml Bottle Belt Bags, item F24880-5500 is sold as a 3-pack and has a list of $40.00. PLUM 200ml Sterile Saline bottles, item F24880-0023 and PLUM pH Neutralizing Eye Wash bottles, item F24880-1023 are also sold as 3-packs with list prices of $29.00 and $38.00 respectively. Sedona Labs Launches New High Dose Vitamin B and Antioxidant Eye Health Formula

Sedona Labs Launches New High Dose Vitamin B and Antioxidant Eye Health Formula

Sedona Labs Leads with Science-Based Supplements

Cottonwood, AZ (PRWEB) August 18, 2010

Sedona Labs, a leading dietary supplement company based in Northern Arizona’s red rock country, announces the launch of a unique vision health product, XanthaView™ Vision Formula.

The clinically based formula features specific dosages of B vitamins that help support healthy eye function, particularly in the central portion of the eye called the macula. One out of three Americans will experience significant deterioration of the macula as they age.

“We specialize in supplements based on the latest science,” says Donna Cappiello, National Sales Director for Sedona Labs. “We believe consumers look for new health formulas that are not a repeat of what’s out there. By adding clinically supported levels of B-vitamins to well-known eye antioxidants, Sedona Labs scientists have formulated XanthaView Vision Formula as one the most powerful, innovative eye health supplements on the market.”

Cappiello also points out that Sedona Labs uses only the highest quality B vitamins, sourced from Europe.

High-Dose B Vitamins Improve Central Eye Health by 41%

XanthaView is based on a groundbreaking, double-blind study by Harvard researchers. The study found that women taking high dosages of specific B vitamins over seven and a half years had 41% better long-term eye health – especially health of their central vision – than women who did not take the B-vitamins.

The researchers believe that the B vitamins may work by reducing levels of homocysteine and by acting as an antioxidant.

“Improvement in central eye health from taking lutein, zeaxanthin and other antioxidants has been in the 20-30% range. Adding the B vitamins gives a dramatic boost to the health of the aging eye,” says Cappiello.

Targeted Eye Health with Lutein and Zeaxanthin

In addition to B vitamins, XanthaView includes clinically researched dosages of lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, vitamins C, E, zinc and copper. These ingredients are crucial to help support resistance to glare and eye strain.

These natural antioxidants also support eye health when the eyes are exposed to excess blue light, which may lead to higher levels of oxidation.

Blue light exposure occurs in bright sunshine, in bright fluorescent light, and in long hours in front of computer terminals. The EUREYE Study published in 2008 found that antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin specifically helped support macular eye health in older people exposed to high levels of sunlight.

Eye Health Means Greater Independence

Supporting healthy vision function is one of the most important things people can do to maintain independence as they get older. Why? People must see well in order to drive, and driving is the key to independence across the United States.

XanthaView Vision Formula and other Sedona Labs supplements are available for sale in select health food stores and natural health retailers. For more information, and for retailer ordering, visit http://www. sedonalabs. com or contact Donna Cappiello, Sedona Labs National Sales Director, at 888-816-8804 ex. 5503.

Food Allergy And Hypersensitivity In Children

Food Allergy And Hypersensitivity In Children

Many children suffer from food allergy or food intolerance. Can you tell the difference? Learn what can be done about these problems.

(PRWEB) February 28, 2003

Food allergy occurs in about 6% to 8% of children. The majority of food allergic reactions occur in the first years of a childÂ’s life. As children grow older, they loose their sensitivity to milk and eggs, but not to peanuts, fish, tree nuts, and shellfish.

For a child with a food allergy, eating even a tiny amount of a particular food can cause symptoms such as nausea, skin rash, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping. A severe allergic reaction can cause swelling in the throat or mouth, wheezing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and severe difficulty breathing.

This kind of severe reaction is called anaphylaxis. Food allergies are the leading cause of anaphylaxis. Food related anaphylaxis causes 200 deaths per year in the United States.

Food allergy is an immunologic reaction which results from eating a particular food or food additive. Food allergy occurs when the bodyÂ’s immune system reacts to certain proteins in a particular food.

Food allergy is a reaction that usually involves the IgE (immunoglobulin E) mechanism.

Young Readers Rally Around New Mantra, Anything's Fossible!

Mother/daughter team writes new middle grade novel that has young readers, parents, and teachers singing its praises. Released just in time for the holidays, "The Fossibles-Bursting from Extinction to Distinction" is storytelling at its best and book two in the series is due out in March 2008.

West Hartford, CT (PRWEB) October 26, 2007

Chasem2 Productions LLC announces the availability of an exciting new book, The Fossibles--Bursting from Extinction to Distinction, the first in a middle grade novel series targeted at kids ages 7-12. Co-authored by a mother and daughter team, Claudia Gauches and Heather Rancourt, the book is available at: Barnes and Noble stores; online at Amazon, Borders, Booksamillion, Target, WalMart; online at www. thefossibles. com]; and at other retail outlets. Storytelling at its best, this book introduces young readers to a new team of dinosaur super-heroes, the Fossibles, with whom kids, parents, and teachers have all fallen in love. And, what's not to love about characters that express their positive outlook on life through their mantra, anything's fossible.

The Fossibles were developed as positive role models for kids by Rancourt, their creator, who says, "The Fossibles are cool and exemplify good values for today's kids, including: eating healthy; exercising; no bullying; getting a solid education; celebrating personal uniqueness and much, much more. Plus, they're funny. After all, it's not easy to be super-sized in a world made for humans."

The official Fossibles website, www. thefossibles. com], contains a 3-minute CGI trailer that shows the Fossibles in action. In early, 2008, the Fossibles will also appear on a new website being launched by Porchlight Entertainment of Los Angeles, CA, the company behind such animation hits as Jay Jay the Jet Plane, FARMkids, and others. In addition to website exposure, Chasem2 offers live Fossibles' shows for schools, libraries, and private events with Rancourt playing Piper La Rue, an eccentric storyteller and secret friend of the Fossibles.

In response to strong demand from fans, the second book in the Fossibles series, "Bolt From the Blue Mission," will be released in March, 2008. According to Claudia Gauches, "Heather and I each have real life parenting experiences that form the backdrop to much of the story. We want kids to believe in themselves and to know that, in life, anything's fossible!" Based on the exceptionally favorable market reaction to Rancourt and Gauches' book, readers young and old are getting the message.

Mercy Reaffirms Commitment to Downtown Baltimore for the Next Half-Century and Beyond: The Mary Catherine Bunting Center Opens 12/19/10

Mercy Reaffirms Commitment to Downtown Baltimore for the Next Half-Century and Beyond: The Mary Catherine Bunting Center Opens 12/19/10

Mercy’s $400+ Million, 20-Story New Hospital Opens 7 Months Ahead of Schedule, Features State of the Art Technology, All Private Patient Rooms, Rooftop Gardens and Other Patient Care Amenities

Baltimore, MD (Vocus) December 9, 2010

In recent years, Mercy Medical Center publications have featured the phrase, “On A Threshold of a Dream.” That dream becomes a reality on Sunday, Dec. 19th when Mercy opens the $400+ million, 686,000 square foot Mary Catherine Bunting Center – the all new Mercy hospital – Mercy president and CEO Thomas R. Mullen announced today.

“Patients will be relocated to the new hospital on Sunday, Dec. 19th. Monday morning, physicians will be performing surgeries in the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center. It’s the beginning of a new chapter in the shared history of Mercy and the City of Baltimore that extends back to 1874,” Mr. Mullen said.

According to Sr. Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair of Mercy’s Board of Trustees, the opening of the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center “reaffirms Mercy’s commitment to Baltimore. Mercy stands at the same location where six Sisters of Mercy arrived in 1874. With the opening of the new hospital, we are committed to serve the health care needs for the people of downtown Baltimore for the next half century and beyond,” she said.

Named in honor of philanthropist Mary Catherine Bunting for her transformational gift to Mercy, the new hospital has a capacity for 259 all-private inpatient rooms (including 32 critical care beds); 15 state-of-the art operating rooms with advanced technology, including robotics; an all-weather bridge connecting the new hospital to the Bunting garage and featuring a skywalk atrium with a historical display celebrating Mercy’s heritage; three roof-top gardens, and more.

“We’d reached a tipping point—further renovation of our existing inpatient tower was not as wise as replacement. It was designed in the 1950s, long before most bedside monitoring equipment and privacy legislation. And opening the new hospital frees space for new Centers of Excellence and clinical programs as well,” Mr. Mullen said.

The Bunting Center will open in phases; initially 190 private rooms will be available on the patient care units. There is shell space for future growth. There are plans to eventually relocate the Emergency Department, Radiology, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and the NICU from the McAuley Plaza (the former inpatient tower) to Bunting over the next few years. The Transitional Care Unit (TCU), Detox Unit, the hospital Sleep Center and the laboratory will remain in the old facility, Mr. Mullen said.

“Particularly noteworthy are the all-private patient rooms. This is now the standard of care as private rooms reduce the risk of infection, falls and medication errors. Patients are more forthcoming with caregivers when in a private room, and this leads to a better understanding of their condition and care. People also sleep better and that helps in their recovery,” Mr. Mullen said.

Each patient room features:
Private bathroom Personal corkboard 32" flat screen television Single bed Private safe Sofa Nursing station Private phone lines Internet Access (WIFI available) Ottoman with built in countertops

Two to three times larger than current patient rooms, each room features access to the “Get Well” Network (where patients can learn more about their individual conditions and forms of treatment); a bathroom/shower features a “no-slip” coating resin for patient safety, and every room has a window view.

The Bunting Center has 15 ORs, the smallest of which is larger than the largest OR in the current hospital tower. The ORs are equipped with special broadcast video equipment allowing surgery video to be shared with other medical teams and physicians both on and off campus.

To keep OR floors clear, all lights and power supports have been mounted on the ceiling and are easily movable. Each OR has approximately the same layout, meaning doctors and nurses can locate equipment and materials quickly and easily. And to reduce the potential spread of infection, all the ORs are located on a single floor. Surgical supplies and equipment are kept in one area for easy access.

A place of worship and quiet reflection, the multi-denominational Chapel of Light features the one-of-kind, custom-built, 20x80 foot “nugget” wall. Each panel in the wall is about 9 feet in length and weighs approximately 1,000 pounds. The panels are filled with the various colored sea-glass nuggets, positioned to catch the morning light.

From the Jerusalem stone lobby staircase to the lobby pillars which bear homage to the values of the Sisters of Mercy, there is much that is “aesthetically appealing” about the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center, said James Curran, AIA, director of the Bunting Center’s architectural firm, Ellerbe Becket.

“But perhaps the most visible element of the new hospital is the three rooftop gardens—more than 17,000 square feet of gardens, found on the center’s 8th, 9th and 10th floors. Not only do these gardens provide patients and staff with a place of meditation, they reduce the amount of energy needed to cool the hospital’s interior,” Mr. Curran said.

Visitors making their way from the new Bunting Garage traverse a “skywalk atrium” which Mercy officials have transformed into a “mini-museum,” celebrating the shared history of the hospital and the city of Baltimore is has served for more than 136 years.

A variety of items are on display including bricks from the Washington University School of Medicine and College of Physicians and Surgeons, forerunners of the University of Maryland School of Medicine; an Award Pin for Nursing Excellence presented to the first graduate of Mercy’s Nursing School, Miss Sarah Ward, in 1901; and the original trowel used by James Cardinal Gibbons in 1889 to lay the hospital’s cornerstone, and used again by Lawrence Cardinal Shehan in 1963 for the Tower Building hospital.

“Tom (Mullen) and I used it last year to place a brick taken from the original House of Mercy (founded in 1827 in Dublin, Ireland) in our new Bunting Center,” Sr. Helen said.

The atrium then enters into the expansive, 2-story lobby. The marble floors feature the green Mercy leaf cross which, in addition to its aesthetic appeal, serves a way-finding function as the cross points to the front desk.

While the new hospital won’t officially open til Dec. 19th, the facility has already won several awards for its design and construction, including for brick and stone masonry work as well as the hospital’s pneumatic tube and electrical conduit systems.

“The developer, Whiting-Turner, the architect, Ellerbe Becket and their subcontractors received four Craftmanship Awards from the 2010 Business Congress and Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore in October for the new hospital,” Mr. Mullen said.

Mercy’s new hospital received a 2010 Bridging the Gap Achievement Award from the Greater Baltimore Committee for Mercy’s efforts in creating a Minority Business Partnership and Strategic Alliance with Whiting-Turner, the Maryland Washington Minority Contractor Association and U. S. Congressman Elijah Cummings.

The general public will have an opportunity to get acquainted with Mercy’s new hospital on Saturday, Dec. 11th from 12-3 p. m. when an open house with tours will be held.

Mercy Medical Center is a 136-year-old, university affiliated medical facility named one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation, among 10 best centers for women’s health and most recently, to U. S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” edition. Mercy is home to the nationally acclaimed Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine and the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center at 345 St. Paul Place in downtown Baltimore. New Report Available from ReportBuyer. com Says Renault Will Double Logan Production in Russia

Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has now added a new report on the growing demand for foreign cars and services in Russia. "Russia's Car Market: Runaway Demand for Foreign Autos and Services," forecasts that Renault will aim to make its Logan one of the three best selling cars in Russia.

(PRWEB) June 24, 2007

Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has now added a new report on the growing demand for foreign cars and services in Russia. "Russia's Car Market: Runaway Demand for Foreign Autos and Services," forecasts that Renault will aim to make its Logan one of the three best selling cars in Russia.

Russia's new car market grew by 28.5 percent in 2006, making it one of the fastest growing car markets in the world and therefore highly lucrative to manufacturers who can penetrate the market. More than half the cars sold in 2006 were non-Russian brands. Demand is expected to push the number of locally assembled foreign brands to more than double over the next five years.

In 2006 Renault was the sixth bestselling foreign brand, behind Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Toyota and Nissan. It now plans to make its budget car, Logan, one of the three bestselling cars in the local Russian market by 2009. As a result it will invest more than $150 million in its plant operation, and employ around 3,400 people in Russia by 2009.

There is soaring demand for Renaults budget car; the Logan is perfect for the Russian car market. It's a relatively modern product, of relatively good build quality and at an affordable price. It is positioned to attract new car buyers who can just about afford to buy a new car which is more expensive than the domestic-made Lada; and the number of those people in the country is growing. This is for a number of reasons both practical and aspirational. Among them, many of the older, cheaper, cars do not comply with present-day industry standards in terms of emissions and safety. In addition, Russians are experiencing higher wages and a developing market for consumer credits and leasing.

This report provides projections of the Russian automotive market till 2011. It analyses some of the investment opportunities for foreign automotive companies, arising from the projected growth of Russia's automotive market till 2011. The investment opportunities analysed range from vehicle assembly and manufacturing of components, through to leasing and management of corporate fleets.

The report also looks at:
the main drivers behind the market growth and the consequential qualitative changes; some aspects of the government's strategy for the national auto industry and its implementation; the growing trend among foreign auto companies towards localizing production in Russia; the implications of the evolving market for Russia's domestic automotive manufacturers.

Update from Haiti: United Nations Foundation Vice President for Global Health Delivers Medical Supplies in Port-au-Prince

Update from Haiti: United Nations Foundation Vice President for Global Health Delivers Medical Supplies in Port-au-Prince

Donations needed for UN Central Emergency Response Fund

Washington, D. C. (Vocus) January 16, 2010

The United Nations Foundation]'s senior global health expert, Dr. Daniel Carucci, traveled to Haiti in the early morning to deliver medical supplies. Dr. Carucci has already met with United Nations staff and will continue to assess the situation on the ground to determine the best way to help the UN's emergency response. Dr. Carucci shared the following message with our staff while traveling.

“It was dark as we made our approach into Port-au-Prince. The Haitian aircraft controls had closed the airport to all aircrafts but made an exception for us to land. There was the normal scattering of individual lights from the houses on the hills leading into the capital and an occasional car's headlights on the roads. Mostly things seemed normal for a developing country at that time early in the morning. As we got closer, however, the extent of the damage became clear. There were concrete structures that were completely flattened and houses that were piles of rubble.

“We landed and I found a UN security officer who was transporting a small number of relief workers to the UN logistics office. He said many of his colleagues were missing and may have been killed. He seemed in a mild state of shock. There is no cell phone communication but he said they have satellite and internet. He seemed so happy to meet someone from the UN family that had come to help.”

UN Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth said, “It is clear from these reports there is an urgent need for people everywhere to support the UN's efforts in Haiti. Donations today will have an impact on the lives of thousands of Haitians in the days and weeks to come.”

Note to the editor:
Immediately after the quake, the CERF dispersed $10 million for urgent Haiti relief efforts and the UN Foundation contributed $1 million. Humanitarian agencies faced with a sudden disaster often struggle to find resources to start life-saving operations. The time between an appeal for assistance and disbursement of funds can be long. This delay costs lives. The CERF fills this critical gap in responding to immediate needs, allocating funds within days of an emergency to kick-start relief efforts.

Dr. Carucci is a medical doctor and practiced medicine with the U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps as an active duty Navy physician and Flight Surgeon. For a full bio, visit http://www. unfoundation. org/about-unf/our-leadership/daniel-carucci. html.

Vietnamese Student Named UMass Boston JFK Award Winner

Vietnamese Student Named UMass Boston JFK Award Winner

Winner Is also Recipient of Prestigious Biomedical Research Fellowship

Boston, MA (Vocus) May 14, 2010

University of Massachusetts Boston (http://www. umb. edu) Chancellor J. Keith Motley today announced that Thao Xuan Do, a Vietnamese immigrant whose goal is to devote her life to fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2010 John F. Kennedy Award for Academic Excellence.

Do, a 26-year-old chemistry major from Norwood, immigrated to America from Vietnam in 2004 with her mother, unable to speak any English. Now, just six years later, she will address a crowd of thousands of fellow graduates, families, and friends gathered at UMass Boston’s 42nd Commencement Ceremony on June 4 as she accepts the highest UMass Boston award an undergraduate can receive.

“When choosing the winner of the John F. Kennedy Award, we look at not only academics and service, but students’ overall contributions as ‘citizens’ of this university and of the world,” said Chancellor J. Keith Motley. “That is why I’m so pleased to honor Thao with this award: While her achievements so far have been impressive and many, she looks at this as just the beginning. It is her dreams that are truly inspiring.”

Do had been in America for just two years when she began her undergraduate degree at UMass Boston in 2006, still unsure of what she would be able to accomplish in her new home. She credits her time at UMass Boston with helping her to build a strong foundation and challenging her to strive for success, no matter what the circumstances.

“One of my first professors told me that in order to learn something, you need to step out of your comfort zone,” Do said. “I had thought coming to America as a non-native speaker, I was leaving my dreams of becoming a leader behind. ... Now it seems like everything is possible. I feel like I can do it all.”

Do plans on becoming a doctor and hopes to eventually be a leader in her field, finding solutions to national and global health issues like health disparity and the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Growing up just outside of Saigon, Vietnam, she witnessed HIV and AIDS take hold of many young people who had turned to drugs and prostitution in a neighborhood where the fight for food and survival was more important than education.

Her determination to fight HIV and AIDS was further cultivated during a trip to Cape Town, South Africa with the University Honors Program in January. Do again saw firsthand the social, economic, and political aspects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic there, volunteering in local clinics.

“I had made a commitment to devote all my life, my skill, and talent to the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” Do said. “The South Africa trip has provided an opportunity for me to look deeply into my soul and helped me reveal and confirm my passion in life.”

When Do graduates this spring, she will head to Bethesda, Maryland to work side by side with some of the world’s leading scientists as one of just 16 finalists selected from 600 applicants nationwide to receive the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Academy fellowship. She will spend a year engaged in biomedical research at NIH, working toward the elimination of domestic health disparities. Then she plans to attend medical school.

Do’s professors say she will make an excellent doctor and researcher.

“At our very first meeting, I sensed in Thao not just a sharp mind but a relentlessly questing intellect,” said Rajini Srikanth, director of the University Honors Program at UMass Boston. “She is not satisfied with what she knows and is always interrogating how she knows what she knows.”

While at UMass Boston Do has also interned with the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She takes time out of her schedule to teach Vietnamese to American--born Vietnamese children and organizes cultural events at a Vietnamese Community Center in Dorchester.

“As a new immigrant to this country, Thao is drawn to teaching the value of Vietnamese culture to second-generation Vietnamese Americans,” wrote Assistant Professor of Chemistry Deyang Qu, who is Do’s research advisor. “Thao has become a shining star at UMass Boston.”

The undergraduate JFK Award is given to one student who demonstrates an excellent academic record, has a commitment to service, and acts as a good citizen of the university and the world. Each year, the award recipient receives a $1,000 honorarium, a bust of John F. Kennedy, and the opportunity to speak at their commencement ceremony. Do is the 33rd UMass Boston JFK winner.

About the University of Massachusetts Boston:
