Top art school students create artwork for Bay Area environmental campaign.

As a part of its dedication to the environment, Academy of Art University has incorporated "green" and sustainable practices not only into its curriculum, but also into its facilities and services. The Academy held Junk Mail: From Debris to Design at 79 Gallery featuring a cross-section of environmental art, ranging from larger than life-size sculptures to fashion designs.

Impassioned by the goal of the Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC) to stop junk mail, students from the Academy of Art University's fashion school (http://www. academyart. edu/fashion-school/index. html), fine art school (http://www. academyart. edu/fine-art-school/index. html), graphic design school (http://www. academyart. edu/graphic-design-school/index. html) and industrial design school have imaginative artworks across a variety of mediums using junk mail from San Francisco mailboxes.

Two sculptures titled Crush and The Mailbox Monster evoke the waste inherent to America's vast junk mail production and distribution. MFA Sculpture students conceived Crush, a larger-than-life portrait of an individual who has the power to block junk mail. BFA Sculpture students emphasize the importance of looking beyond just recycling junk mail and propose creative, environmental solutions with The Mailbox Monster.

"These students are committed to changes for positive growth within their community, bringing their own spirit of humor and invention to a project with possible far-reaching environmental impact, above and beyond the existent requirements of their coursework," said Associate Director of Fine Art Sculpture Margaret Keelan.

The average American adult receives and disposes of approximately 41 pounds of junk mail each year. It takes 17 trees to make a ton of paper; 42% of timber harvested nationwide becomes paper pulp. The Academy of Art University's Junk Mail: From Debris to Design encourages consumers to fight back against this insidious industry.

The Haskell Company announces it has been selected by Advanced Particle Therapy LLC and Scripps Health to provide design/build services for the Scripps Proton Therapy Center to be located in San Diego, Calif.

The Haskell Company (http://haskell. com/en) announces it has been selected by Advanced Particle Therapy LLC (http://www. advancedparticletherapy. com) and Scripps Health (http://www. scripps. org/) to provide design/build services for the Scripps Proton Therapy Center to be located in San Diego, Calif. The cutting-edge outpatient cancer treatment facility will feature 102,000 square feet of administrative and treatment area and will include one proton particle beam accelerator Cyclotron, two fixed-beam rooms, and three rotational beam gantries. This equipment will be provided by Varian Medical Systems, the recognized world leader in radiation oncology devices. Proton treatment is the favored method of treating certain types of tumors, such as prostate, brain and pediatric cancers, without severely damaging the surrounding healthy tissues.

“With only seven Proton Treatment Centers operating in the United States, we are honored to work with Scripps and Haskell to create a state-of-the-art facility that will treat patients in the greater San Diego and California region,” said Jeffrey Bordok, president and CEO of Advanced Particle Therapy LLC, a company that teams with clients seeking a complete turnkey solution to the implementation of a particle therapy cancer treatment center.

Construction on the Scripps Proton Therapy Center will begin in July and the first patient treatment is expected to occur in February 2013. Upon completion, the Scripps Proton Therapy Center will be operated by Scripps, under the medical direction of the Scripps Clinic Medical Group, and will treat approximately 2,400 patients annually.

Signet Development will serve as the lead developer for the Scripps Proton Therapy Center and Haskell has been selected to provide the design/build services for the space that will house the state-of-the-art equipment, which is custom designed and must be constructed to meet very tight tolerance requirements for proper installation.

“Our unique integrated design/build capabilities allow us to provide the needed expertise to create the space and design work for this highly-specialized treatment center,” said Paul Tyler, president of Haskell’s Commercial Group. “We are honored to work with the partners in this project and look forward to building the Scripps Proton Therapy Center to better serve patients in the greater California area.”

Proton treatment is made possible by a Varian 250 MeV Superconducting Cyclotron. Varian’s 250 MeV cyclotron is proven technology designed for high-efficiency, low-energy consumption, high reliability and modern treatment features such as pencil beam scanning, sometimes referred to as spot scanning, which enables beam intensity modulation. Intensity-modulated proton therapy makes it possible to shape the dose distribution very precisely in order to concentrate the does on the targeted tumor while sparing normal, healthy tissues.

Through ionization, the Cyclotron separates a hydrogen atom’s protons from its electrons and, by use of electric and magnetic fields, accelerates at near light speed the proton beam into treatment rooms. The center will include five treatment rooms, two of which will provide a fixed beam and three of which will include a rotational beam. Each room will contain highly sophisticated electromagnet beam directional equipment, weighing 150 tons per piece, to deliver the proton beam to the patient. Additional space at the proton treatment center will include clinical diagnostic and treatment preparation rooms as well as medical office space and a reception area.

Inventor Marc Koska is a man with a mission—saving lives. In 1984, as the world was learning of a new disease called HIV/AIDS, Koska, then 23, read an article predicting that unsafe injections would spread the disease like a plague.

That's when his life changed.

“Appalled at the prospect of such an avoidable catastrophe, I decided there and then to try and do something about it,” the father of three from Sussex, England, writes on his website.

He set out to invent an inexpensive syringe that could be used only once, thus thwarting the spread of the disease through repeat injections. Although his concept was in place, Koska had no idea how to go about it.

“My ignorance of healthcare systems and syringes was complete—and the only thing I had ever manufactured was excuses,” Koska says. But he went to work on the problem and after many years of research, the “K1” was born—the world’s first auto-disabled syringe. In a nutshell, the syringe self-destructs after one injection.

In 2001, the K1 was adopted by UNICEF for immunization. Auto-disable syringes have since become the norm for disease prevention, but immunization accounts for just 5 percent of injections.

Koska, though gratified by the UNICEF adoption of his technology, was still concerned about the 95 percent of injections that still put lives at risk from re-used needles.

Traditional syringes are disposable, but unscrupulous doctors and desperate people, particularly in the developing world, buy used syringes and use them over and over. Every year, according to The World Health Organization, 1.3 million people die from diseases caused by non-sterile needles and 22 million more are infected with hepatitis and HIV.

“That is precisely why I formed the Safepoint charity in 2005,” says Koska. Safepoint’s mission is to inform parents and children around the world of the dangers of non-sterile injections and how to avoid them.

“We teach them that the syringe must come in a packet, be used once and then must be destroyed, put in a safety box and discarded properly,” Koska says.

With the blessing of numerous health ministers, Koska has set up Safepoint centres in seven countries including India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Each centre trains and employs local staff who spread the message in schools, clinics and local communities.

Koska became a Scientologist in 1992. “I was always absolutely certain there was a system out there that would help Mankind and I was very eager to find it. My wife and I read many, many books and listened to hundreds of tapes trying to find the answer from motivational speakers, religious leaders, philosophers. It became a fantastic mission to try to find the right solution. Nothing really satisfied us and we knew that there was something better and bigger out there,” he says.

A friend introduced him to Dianetics. “I read the first 50 pages and knew that I’d found the answer. It literally answered all the very sophisticated questions I had about life—questions I thought no one else had ever thought of. I knew that I’d found what I’d been looking for,” Koska says.

“You read a piece of data which is very true to you and it just becomes part of you—you apply it on a continual basis. I suppose the easiest way to explain it is it’s just easier to get over problems. You can handle things a lot better and if you confront a problem, you can get through it very easily and make progress very quickly.”

Koska feels Scientology has made it possible for him to accomplish his life-saving mission: “It’s being able to reach out and get in touch with people you would normally think wouldn’t be possible.”

He also credits the encouragement of those nearest and dearest to him. “I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of my family,” says Koska. “But parenthood only reinforces your determination to protect other families from what is an entirely preventable human tragedy. Preventable tragedy makes me angry. It’s a terrible waste, and there’s still so much more to be done.”

Koska was awarded an OBE in 2006 for his contribution to Global Healthcare, having successfully pushed to table legislation to prevent syringe re-use in over 15 countries.

In recent years, Mercy Medical Center publications have featured the phrase, “On A Threshold of a Dream.” That dream becomes a reality on Sunday, Dec. 19th when Mercy opens the $400+ million, 686,000 square foot Mary Catherine Bunting Center – the all new Mercy hospital – Mercy president and CEO Thomas R. Mullen announced today.

“Patients will be relocated to the new hospital on Sunday, Dec. 19th. Monday morning, physicians will be performing surgeries in the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center. It’s the beginning of a new chapter in the shared history of Mercy and the City of Baltimore that extends back to 1874,” Mr. Mullen said.

According to Sr. Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair of Mercy’s Board of Trustees, the opening of the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center “reaffirms Mercy’s commitment to Baltimore. Mercy stands at the same location where six Sisters of Mercy arrived in 1874. With the opening of the new hospital, we are committed to serve the health care needs for the people of downtown Baltimore for the next half century and beyond,” she said.

Named in honor of philanthropist Mary Catherine Bunting for her transformational gift to Mercy, the new hospital has a capacity for 259 all-private inpatient rooms (including 32 critical care beds); 15 state-of-the art operating rooms with advanced technology, including robotics; an all-weather bridge connecting the new hospital to the Bunting garage and featuring a skywalk atrium with a historical display celebrating Mercy’s heritage; three roof-top gardens, and more.

“We’d reached a tipping point—further renovation of our existing inpatient tower was not as wise as replacement. It was designed in the 1950s, long before most bedside monitoring equipment and privacy legislation. And opening the new hospital frees space for new Centers of Excellence and clinical programs as well,” Mr. Mullen said.

The Bunting Center will open in phases; initially 190 private rooms will be available on the patient care units. There is shell space for future growth. There are plans to eventually relocate the Emergency Department, Radiology, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and the NICU from the McAuley Plaza (the former inpatient tower) to Bunting over the next few years. The Transitional Care Unit (TCU), Detox Unit, the hospital Sleep Center and the laboratory will remain in the old facility, Mr. Mullen said.

“Particularly noteworthy are the all-private patient rooms. This is now the standard of care as private rooms reduce the risk of infection, falls and medication errors. Patients are more forthcoming with caregivers when in a private room, and this leads to a better understanding of their condition and care. People also sleep better and that helps in their recovery,” Mr. Mullen said.

Each patient room features:

Two to three times larger than current patient rooms, each room features access to the “Get Well” Network (where patients can learn more about their individual conditions and forms of treatment); a bathroom/shower features a “no-slip” coating resin for patient safety, and every room has a window view.

The Bunting Center has 15 ORs, the smallest of which is larger than the largest OR in the current hospital tower. The ORs are equipped with special broadcast video equipment allowing surgery video to be shared with other medical teams and physicians both on and off campus.

To keep OR floors clear, all lights and power supports have been mounted on the ceiling and are easily movable. Each OR has approximately the same layout, meaning doctors and nurses can locate equipment and materials quickly and easily. And to reduce the potential spread of infection, all the ORs are located on a single floor. Surgical supplies and equipment are kept in one area for easy access.

A place of worship and quiet reflection, the multi-denominational Chapel of Light features the one-of-kind, custom-built, 20x80 foot “nugget” wall. Each panel in the wall is about 9 feet in length and weighs approximately 1,000 pounds. The panels are filled with the various colored sea-glass nuggets, positioned to catch the morning light.

From the Jerusalem stone lobby staircase to the lobby pillars which bear homage to the values of the Sisters of Mercy, there is much that is “aesthetically appealing” about the new Mary Catherine Bunting Center, said James Curran, AIA, director of the Bunting Center’s architectural firm, Ellerbe Becket.

“But perhaps the most visible element of the new hospital is the three rooftop gardens—more than 17,000 square feet of gardens, found on the center’s 8th, 9th and 10th floors. Not only do these gardens provide patients and staff with a place of meditation, they reduce the amount of energy needed to cool the hospital’s interior,” Mr. Curran said.

Visitors making their way from the new Bunting Garage traverse a “skywalk atrium” which Mercy officials have transformed into a “mini-museum,” celebrating the shared history of the hospital and the city of Baltimore is has served for more than 136 years.

A variety of items are on display including bricks from the Washington University School of Medicine and College of Physicians and Surgeons, forerunners of the University of Maryland School of Medicine; an Award Pin for Nursing Excellence presented to the first graduate of Mercy’s Nursing School, Miss Sarah Ward, in 1901; and the original trowel used by James Cardinal Gibbons in 1889 to lay the hospital’s cornerstone, and used again by Lawrence Cardinal Shehan in 1963 for the Tower Building hospital.

“Tom (Mullen) and I used it last year to place a brick taken from the original House of Mercy (founded in 1827 in Dublin, Ireland) in our new Bunting Center,” Sr. Helen said.

The atrium then enters into the expansive, 2-story lobby. The marble floors feature the green Mercy leaf cross which, in addition to its aesthetic appeal, serves a way-finding function as the cross points to the front desk.

While the new hospital won’t officially open til Dec. 19th, the facility has already won several awards for its design and construction, including for brick and stone masonry work as well as the hospital’s pneumatic tube and electrical conduit systems.

“The developer, Whiting-Turner, the architect, Ellerbe Becket and their subcontractors received four Craftmanship Awards from the 2010 Business Congress and Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore in October for the new hospital,” Mr. Mullen said.

Mercy’s new hospital received a 2010 Bridging the Gap Achievement Award from the Greater Baltimore Committee for Mercy’s efforts in creating a Minority Business Partnership and Strategic Alliance with Whiting-Turner, the Maryland Washington Minority Contractor Association and U. S. Congressman Elijah Cummings.

The general public will have an opportunity to get acquainted with Mercy’s new hospital on Saturday, Dec. 11th from 12-3 p. m. when an open house with tours will be held.

The United Nations Foundation]'s senior global health expert, Dr. Daniel Carucci, traveled to Haiti in the early morning to deliver medical supplies. Dr. Carucci has already met with United Nations staff and will continue to assess the situation on the ground to determine the best way to help the UN's emergency response. Dr. Carucci shared the following message with our staff while traveling.

“It was dark as we made our approach into Port-au-Prince. The Haitian aircraft controls had closed the airport to all aircrafts but made an exception for us to land. There was the normal scattering of individual lights from the houses on the hills leading into the capital and an occasional car's headlights on the roads. Mostly things seemed normal for a developing country at that time early in the morning. As we got closer, however, the extent of the damage became clear. There were concrete structures that were completely flattened and houses that were piles of rubble.

“We landed and I found a UN security officer who was transporting a small number of relief workers to the UN logistics office. He said many of his colleagues were missing and may have been killed. He seemed in a mild state of shock. There is no cell phone communication but he said they have satellite and internet. He seemed so happy to meet someone from the UN family that had come to help.”

UN Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth said, “It is clear from these reports there is an urgent need for people everywhere to support the UN's efforts in Haiti. Donations today will have an impact on the lives of thousands of Haitians in the days and weeks to come.”

Keith Motley today announced that Thao Xuan Do, a Vietnamese immigrant whose goal is to devote her life to fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2010 John F. Kennedy Award for Academic Excellence.

Do, a 26-year-old chemistry major from Norwood, immigrated to America from Vietnam in 2004 with her mother, unable to speak any English. Now, just six years later, she will address a crowd of thousands of fellow graduates, families, and friends gathered at UMass Boston’s 42nd Commencement Ceremony on June 4 as she accepts the highest UMass Boston award an undergraduate can receive.

“When choosing the winner of the John F. Kennedy Award, we look at not only academics and service, but students’ overall contributions as ‘citizens’ of this university and of the world,” said Chancellor J. Keith Motley. “That is why I’m so pleased to honor Thao with this award: While her achievements so far have been impressive and many, she looks at this as just the beginning. It is her dreams that are truly inspiring.”

Do had been in America for just two years when she began her undergraduate degree at UMass Boston in 2006, still unsure of what she would be able to accomplish in her new home. She credits her time at UMass Boston with helping her to build a strong foundation and challenging her to strive for success, no matter what the circumstances.

“One of my first professors told me that in order to learn something, you need to step out of your comfort zone,” Do said. “I had thought coming to America as a non-native speaker, I was leaving my dreams of becoming a leader behind. ... Now it seems like everything is possible. I feel like I can do it all.”

Do plans on becoming a doctor and hopes to eventually be a leader in her field, finding solutions to national and global health issues like health disparity and the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Growing up just outside of Saigon, Vietnam, she witnessed HIV and AIDS take hold of many young people who had turned to drugs and prostitution in a neighborhood where the fight for food and survival was more important than education.

Her determination to fight HIV and AIDS was further cultivated during a trip to Cape Town, South Africa with the University Honors Program in January. Do again saw firsthand the social, economic, and political aspects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic there, volunteering in local clinics.

“I had made a commitment to devote all my life, my skill, and talent to the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” Do said. “The South Africa trip has provided an opportunity for me to look deeply into my soul and helped me reveal and confirm my passion in life.”

When Do graduates this spring, she will head to Bethesda, Maryland to work side by side with some of the world’s leading scientists as one of just 16 finalists selected from 600 applicants nationwide to receive the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Academy fellowship. She will spend a year engaged in biomedical research at NIH, working toward the elimination of domestic health disparities. Then she plans to attend medical school.

Do’s professors say she will make an excellent doctor and researcher.

“At our very first meeting, I sensed in Thao not just a sharp mind but a relentlessly questing intellect,” said Rajini Srikanth, director of the University Honors Program at UMass Boston. “She is not satisfied with what she knows and is always interrogating how she knows what she knows.”

While at UMass Boston Do has also interned with the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She takes time out of her schedule to teach Vietnamese to American--born Vietnamese children and organizes cultural events at a Vietnamese Community Center in Dorchester.

“As a new immigrant to this country, Thao is drawn to teaching the value of Vietnamese culture to second-generation Vietnamese Americans,” wrote Assistant Professor of Chemistry Deyang Qu, who is Do’s research advisor. “Thao has become a shining star at UMass Boston.”

The undergraduate JFK Award is given to one student who demonstrates an excellent academic record, has a commitment to service, and acts as a good citizen of the university and the world. Each year, the award recipient receives a $1,000 honorarium, a bust of John F. Kennedy, and the opportunity to speak at their commencement ceremony. Do is the 33rd UMass Boston JFK winner.
