Global Health Progress Amplifies New Report that Outlines Barriers in Securing Access to Medicines in Least Developed Countries

Importance of drug patents, public-private partnerships highlighted

“There is a public health crisis in the least developed countries. It is a crisis made by humans and solvable only by humans. There is urgency for governments, businesses, NGOs and academia to collaborate in dealing with this most urgent of problems,” declares Cameron Institute’s new 200-page report, Pharmaceutical Access in Least Developed Countries: on-the-ground barriers and industry successes.

Executive Director D. Wayne Taylor, Ph. D., F. CIM., who prepared the report, cites the recent World Health Organization’s (WHO) Draft Global Plan and Strategy for Action in stressing the importance of pharmaceutical industry partnerships. The report states that the industry must focus its energies on “the growing burden of diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect developing countries, and particularly women and children.”

Global Health Progress actively supports the report’s outlined actions needed to solve this issue, including endorsement of public-private partnerships (PPPs), protecting intellectual property and drug patents as the cornerstones of affordable innovation, improving access to medicines and developing new drugs.

Public-private partnerships are one key way to improve access to medicines in the least developed countries. As the report notes, the research-based pharmaceutical industry, in various public-private partnerships, has been improving access to medicines in the least developed countries of the world since the 1950’s. To date, there have been 150 public-private partnerships whose aim it is to improve access to medicines and currently 90% of PPPs are industry-led.

Additionally, innovation is cited by the report as “the hallmark of the pharmaceutical industry. Without innovation there would be no immunizations, medicines or biologics to save lives, improve quality of lives, and to save much needed healthcare dollars. A basic right in law is to retain possession of one’s own ideas and discoveries.” The report also notes the importance of protecting this innovation through intellectual property and drug patents, as well as through the infrastructure and legal structures needed for healthy growth.

The report adds that every dollar invested in new medicines relieves the healthcare system of seven dollars of expenditure elsewhere, and that new drugs increase life expectancy and life-time income by about 1.0% per year while also decreasing years of life lost. It also provides a summary of 2010 data regarding contributions provided by research-based pharmaceutical industry to least developed countries:
USD 8,450,000,000 of product and investment 950,000,000 patients treated 9,500,000,000 doses/treatments administered 350,000 doctors, nurses and other health personnel trained

Despite this progress, actions are still needed to solve the problem without creating additional difficulties. For example, even though existing medicines for HIV/AIDS has reduced mortality rates in developed countries by 70%, adherence and compliance are two major obstacles, amongst many, to the successful deployment of these drugs in developing countries. Additional barriers to access and improved health in least-developed countries include “on the ground” barriers, such as market failure, corruption, non-existent health human resources and infrastructure, and the lack of both local and international political will.

Earth Day workshops teach children the importance of planting, recycling

In honor of Earth Day, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment teamed-up with the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Mount Kisco to provide hands-on ‘green’ workshops for the Club’s 3-12-year-olds.

During the morning, 3-5-year-olds from the Club’s preschool classes worked with Cherie Ingraham, founder, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment, to create container gardens from recycled materials. Students used images from recycled newspapers and magazines, soy crayons and eco-friendly markers to decorate their creations in which they later planted organic flower seeds. Throughout the morning, Ingraham spoke with students about why we celebrate Earth Day, the importance of being kind and gentle to Mother Earth and how they can start to ‘go green’ at home.

“It is important for children to learn to appreciate and take good care of Mother Earth at a young age,” said Cherie Ingraham, founder, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment. “Whether it’s recycling their coloring books or turning off the water while they brush their teeth, their small steps can help to make a positive impact on the environment. By working with the children on Earth Day, I hope to inspire a lifetime of good, ‘green,’ habits and teach them the importance of celebrating our planet.”

Following her work with the preschoolers, Ingraham spent the afternoon working with the Club’s 5-12-year-olds (grades K-6). The activity kicked-off with the children sharing the ways that they are kind, gentle and respectful to Mother Earth each day. Ingraham then showed students how to create photo frames from recycled materials, including items found in nature, such as twigs and rocks, as well as common household items, such as yarn, old newspapers and magazines.

“We are grateful to Cherie Ingraham and the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment for taking the time to work with our children and supporting our 2010 Humanitarian Award Dinner theme, “Sustain,” which celebrates our Club’s goal to preserve, protect, and nurture the youngest generation with healthy nutrition, ‘green’ living, and renewable energy initiatives,” said Brian Skanes, executive director, Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester. “The workshops helped the children to understand the importance of ‘green’ living and we hope that they will carry these environmentally-friendly lessons with them for years to come.”

To help the children go ‘green’ and celebrate Mother Earth throughout the year, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment gave each child an Earth Journal, to document their good, ‘green’ work and a copy of is 2010 Earth Calendar, which recognizes several environmental holidays, is printed on recycled paper with soy ink and features environmentally-friendly artwork from children across the U. S. collected through its annual Earth Day Everyday contest.

Teachers were also given copies of the 2010 Earth Calendar as well as the Foundation’s 12” x 18” posters, which feature Chuckie Goodnight and his crew of loyal plant and animal friends working to preserve and protect the environment, for their classrooms. Each poster features eco-friendly messaging and highlights the simple things children can do to take good care of Mother Earth. Designs include: Choose Organic; Save Water; Think & Choose; and, The 4R’s.

Regardless of where the responsibility will ultimately lie, homeowners are forced to repair the damages to their home. "There are inherent risks associated with the removal of toxic Chinese drywall," said Richard Bennett, the firm's COO. Remediation protocols for Chinese drywall have not yet been established and if not performed correctly or adequately, remediation of homes with Chinese drywall could lead to even more problems. Cross-contamination is occurring, and after homes have the sheetrock torn out and replaced sulfur diffusion continues to occur. The problem seems to be that diffusion of sulfur gases will continue to occur because the protocol for removal and replacement are greatly flawed. Simply removing drywall from the home and replacing it with new drywall will not protect occupants from possible health problems. This is now being documented not only in laboratories but also in Florida case histories.
