About the Book (Excerpts & Info):
Psychiatric Injury is an in-depth reference guide that deals with the interface of law and psychiatry in this niche. It is for those who are without much formal psychiatric training and yet must make sense of psychiatric issues. Here is a medical model for objective--unbiased and thorough--psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. No side of advocacy is favored. Sound clinical work is equally applicable to plaintiff or defense.

For attorneys, this up-to-date handbook will improve your ability to assess a case and to conduct effective direct and cross-examination. It will allow you to concentrate on the clinical issues rather than rely on tricks and unsettling tactics. Your legal questions get clinical answers. It will make your advocacy stronger and your examinations more incisive and revealing.

For insurance professionals (adjusters, nurse case managers, and claims personnel), Psychiatric Injury will empower you to ask pointed clinical questions and know when you have adequate answers. You will have substantiation for your decisions.

Dr. Robert Mignone discusses psychiatric practices, concerns, diagnoses, questions, and controversial topics in this area--illustrating them with composite vignettes of real-life cases. The information reflects consensus mainstream standards. It is practical and made easy to grasp.

Psychiatric Injury will provide you with a working knowledge of many of the clinical issues encountered by the psychiatric expert interfacing with the demands of legal and insurance professionals in this field of injury, trauma, and damages.

Dr. Robert Mignone attended Amherst College (cum laude) and graduated from Duke Medical School (Alpha Omega Alpha) in 1966, with later internships (internal medicine) and residencies (neurology, psychiatry) at Yale New Haven Hospital, Cornell/New York Hospital, and MGH/Harvard Medical School, respectively. A teacher and academician, Dr. Mignone taught and practiced psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard from 1974 to 1988 before opening Gulf Coast Health Services, a multi-specialty mental health group in Sarasota, Florida. He has thirty-five years as a psychiatrist in private practice; twenty years of Workers' Compensation, torts and disability insurance evaluations, with several hundred Independent Medical Examinations (IME) and depositions.

Important News for All California Drug and Alcohol Counselors, Educators, Teachers, and Clinical Supervisors

Important News for All California Drug and Alcohol Counselors, Educators, Teachers, and Clinical Supervisors

Federico C. Grosso, DDS, PhD, MFT, BCFE announces an important and impacting piece of information regarding the practice of drug and alcohol counseling in California. This information applies to all counselors, educators, clinical supervisors, and teachers. It is based on the legal standing of drug and alcohol counselors: not being licensed, thus certain important laws do not apply to them.

Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) April 22, 2006

Dr. Grosso serves as an expert witness in malpractice actions involving drug and alcohol counselors and has published the foundational academic textbook on the legal and ethical standard of care for California drug and alcohol counselors. Throughout his court cases, Attorneys ask Dr. Grosso an important question involving drug and alcohol counselors when he is testifying in court cases. He is asked if drug and alcohol counselors are legally mandated to report child abuse, elder/dependent abuse, Tarasoff situations, and are they permitted to breach confidentiality for suicide? His answer is: “No, because they are not legally identified by California law as mandated or permitted reporters.”

For California drug and alcohol counselors, this is an important and impacting issue: if they breach the client’s confidentiality without their authorization, they can be sued for malpractice and they will likely lose their case. This is true because drug and alcohol counselors are not given legal protection under the law since they are not listed as mandated or permitted reporters of harm to self or others. How can drug and alcohol counselors protect themselves in these situations?

Dr. Grosso recommends that first, the clinician use an informed consent document. California law requires drug and alcohol counselors to use one with every client. Next, this document addresses how the clinician would manage a potential situation of harm to self or others. Next, the client would sign this document. Finally, should it be necessary to breach the client’s confidentiality as required by the clinician’s ethical standards, the informed consent document provides the clinician the avenue for managing this issue safely. For additional information, Dr. Grosso recommends each clinician to consult his textbook: Advanced Applications of Law and Ethics for California Drug and Alcohol Counselors.

Background on FGrosso. com. FGrosso. com provides mental health clinicians with practical and easy-to-use clinical resources including practice enhancement workbooks, online and self-study continuing education, software, consultation as an expert witness, lectures, and academic publications. Dr. Grosso also provides expert witness services in malpractice actions involving marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, alcohol and drug abuse counselors, certified addictions treatment specialists, and dentists accused of child abuse when providing treatment in the dental office. He also lectures for and consults with mental health organizations. He is an official lecturer on law and ethics and other subjects for the California Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Professor: No Doubt Electronic Cigarettes Safer than Cigarettes

Professor: No Doubt Electronic Cigarettes Safer than Cigarettes

An expert in Tobacco Harm Reduction argues that e-cigarettes carry around one percent of the risk of electronic cigarettes and that attacks on them are due to politics, not science.

(PRWEB) December 28, 2009

In an interview with E Cigarette Direct Professor Carl Phillips, associate professor at the University of Alberta, has argued that electronic cigarettes are a valid alternative to cigarettes, stating:

"I think there's absolutely no doubt that it is a safer alternative to regular cigarettes."

He estimated that electronic cigarettes carried a risk that:

"...is probably in the order of 99 percent less harmful than smoking."

While acknowledging that an FDA study did find traces of carcinogens, he pointed out that banning items based on the quantities found would also mean the FDA would "...have to ban half the foods that are available."

The carcinogens, he explained, were also found in FDA approved smoking cessation aids, and indeed in all products that utilised nicotine from tobacco plants.

According to the professor, much criticism of the electronic cigarettes by public health was due to an all out war on tobacco. He compared it to the problem of drug use, saying that people who are utterly opposed to the use of drugs also oppose needle exchanges, despite the fact that needle exchanges could save many lives.

The Professor did have some reservations about quality, saying that there was a need for regulation of the production of electronic cigarettes.

Professor Carl Phillips, who runs the TobaccoHarmReduction. org site, is one of a number of experts in tobacco and Tobacco Harm Reduction who have come out in favour of the device. Other experts who have have spoken out in favour of the electronic cigarette in interviews include Dr Joel Nitzkin, Chair of the Tobacco Control Task Force for the American Association of Public Health Physicians, Professor Siegel, a specialist in preventative medicine and public health, and David Sweanor, a former advisor on tobacco control to the WHO.

Male Menopause 'Rare But Real' - Age UK

Male Menopause 'Rare But Real' - Age UK

University scientists have debunked the myth that the menopause is a strictly female phenomenon.

(PRWeb UK) July 2, 2010

A study by university scientists have found that, though rare, menopause is not a strictly female phenomenon. The male menopause or hypogonadism is linked to men showing similar symptoms to their female counterparts going menopause.

Despite being rare, some men show similar symptoms to their female counterparts going through the "change" such as a lack of energy, sadness, anxiety and broken concentration.

The male menopause - also known as hypogonadism - is triggered by a slump in testosterone levels in older age.

The testosterone levels of 3,369 men aged 40 to 79 were measured for the study which assessed the sexual, physical and psychological health of all those involved in order to compare their findings with the classic hallmarks of the female menopause.

They found that a minority of men (2%) suffered symptoms that met criteria laid down by experts to assess the onset of the female menopause.

These included inactivity, lack of energy, sadness, changes in sleeping patterns, poor concentration, feeling worthless, and anxiety.

However, study leader Professor Fred Wu, from the University of Manchester's School of Biomedicine, said the symptoms were only weakly linked to male hormone levels.

"Our findings suggest that testosterone treatment may only be useful in a relatively small number of cases where androgen (male hormone) deficiency is suspected, since many candidate symptoms of classic hypogonadism were not associated with decreased testosterone levels in older men," he said.

The findings, published in the New England Journal Of Medicine, will guide doctors facing requests from men seeking a testosterone boost.

Commercial Production, Web Advertising, TV - and Matt LeBlanc? - Converge on Moonrap. com

Commercial Production, Web Advertising, TV - and Matt LeBlanc? - Converge on Moonrap. com

Matt LeBlanc's outgrown his doofus-y demeanor and delivers a more mature comedic sensibility in a 2-minute "Episodes" teaser directed by Paul Fuentes of Moon Media.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 8, 2010

"My directors were always relevant, now they're topical," said commercial production veteran Tom Mooney, referring to the latest project of Moon Media director Paul Fuentes, a popular promo for Matt LeBlanc's new show (http://www. moonrap. com/2010/03/leblanc. html), "Episodes," slated to debut in May on SHOWTIME and BBC2. "Building a successful media boutique today is not just about executing work. It's about doing great work that spans TV, Web, theatrical, mobile, every medium - we're still creating amazing content, but now the box has changed. The popularity of a promo like Paul's just drives that point home." http://www. moonrap. com/2010/03/leblanc. html (http://www. moonrap. com/2010/03/leblanc. html)

Fuentes' Le Blanc promo (he's helmed numerous promo campaigns for SHOWTIME, HBO, CBS, and others) is the subject of an article on Moon Media's new online magazine, www. MoonRap. com (http://www. MoonRap. com). In the article, Mooney references the dynamism of the Web, which works in mysterious ways, connecting with audiences with the content of their choosing: "The Web gives you what TV doesn't, it allows you to pull the content you want, and in this case it's Matt LeBlanc!" (Mooney worked with LeBlanc during the "Friends" era, exec producing the ongoing, EMMY-winning "The More You Know Campaign" for NBC)

"It's healthy for us all to acknowledge that everything we watch is going to originate or appear on the Web and that the Web will, in turn, appear on TV," Mooney said. "So, in putting this company together, I looked for commercial directors who were involved in a lot of interesting things, across many platforms," Mooney said. "As a result, we have all kinds of projects to talk about on our blog. Hopefully, it's material that people will find engaging, entertaining, and informative." Indeed, Moon Media features an eclectic roster of directors tailor-made to suit today's agency and client needs, from traditional broadcast to progressive, web-based campaigns. "It's frustrating sometimes, because many in our business hold on to the old way of thinking," he added, "and that's not the real world."

Prior to founding Moon Media last year, Mooney was a partner in Headquarters Films, in its heyday one of the top 5 production companies in the world. With that company, he took home every imaginable award and honor the ad industry had to offer; he sees things differently now. "I want my peers to respect what I do," he said, "but so much points to the Web now, which is highly democratic. What I want most now is the audience award."

Moon Media combines Mooney's strong reputation for award-winning commercial production and his history servicing the largest global brands with a keen appreciation of how the market works today. In only its first year, the company has executive-produced web series and short films to showcase its talent - and its ability to be a partner for brands and agencies. "We used to be called 'production partners,'" he concludes. "Because that's all we did, production. Now, we are strategic and creative partners as well. We're on an adventure together. We're adventure partners."

The Moon Media roster is comprised of directors Agust Baldursson, Michael Engler, Des Mullan, Wonderland, Robert Black, Duccio Fabbri, Paul Fuentes, Scigliano Brothers, Liz Hinlein, and Jeff Cooney

The company also features a Direct from London roster that includes David Eustace, Double Act, and Chris Mudge.

The FLIP students are required to undertake various assignments of a charitable and financial nature over the course of 3 years for which they will receive financial rewards and gifts. Participants are also able to select a charity of their choice to receive donations and for whom they will complete a fund raising project.

The students are also learning about the financial markets and are running their own virtual financial portfolios, guided by their Credit Suisse mentors. These are all doing remarkably well!

Speaking on behalf of The Bonita Trust, founding member of International Advisory Board Ruth Parasol DeLeon (http://www. bonitatrust. org/ruth_parasol. html) commented “Since 2004, the Bonita Trust has supported numerous charitable projects in Gibraltar, aimed at many different groups within our society; from the lesser abled in the community to funding sports and cultural activities. As well as providing a challenge for our high academic achievers in schools the FLIP project allows the students to acquire a sense of their social responsibility. We are delighted with the results as the students and have come up with very inventive ideas to help their chosen charities.”

Trino Cruz from Credit Suisse remarked, “As part of our pledge to corporate citizenship, Credit Suisse is proud of its partnership with The Bonita Trust which has ensured such a successful start for FLIP. The excellent response and high level of involvement of all students and the invaluable support received from all involved, has made FLIP an exceptional community initiative so well tailored to Gibraltar itself.”

Headteachers and the Director of Education, speaking after discussions with the Gibraltar Ministry for Education, said this is an exciting project for their pupils, and participation in it would not only help them personally, but would also enhance their future university and career applications. The students are currently engaged in planning individual charity fundraising events and The Bonita Trust and Credit Suisse hope that the public will support their efforts to raise as much money as possible. All funds raised by the students will be matched by the Bonita Trust, resulting in twice as much money for local charities.

FLIP

FLIP was first launched in January 2009 with 20 students, and so far the following local charities have benefited financially from the project: The Gibraltar Society for Cancer Relief; The Calpe House Charitable Trust; The Gibraltar Disability Society; St John’s Ambulance; The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre; Research into Childhood Cancer; A Pathway through Pain; Gibraltar Branch of Cancer Research UK; The Down’s Syndrome Support Group Gibraltar; The Gibraltar Community Association; The Gibraltar Society for the Visually Impaired; The Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group; and Childline Gibraltar.

FLIP is supported by the Department of Education and Training and all current year 12 students from any Gibraltar-based school / college, who have achieved at least 5 A’s at GCSE are invited to attend the launch and apply for the opportunity to take part in the FLP project’s second intake. Twenty applicants will once again be selected to participate in the scheme.

FLIP students are required to research their chosen charities, comparing and contrasting them to a similar international charity, and have submitted a detailed essay on their findings, suggesting areas for improvement. For further information please contact: Ms Ros Astengo info(at)flip(dot)gi

Online Dating Gets Real – Forget the Super Model, go for the Big Beautiful Woman

Online Dating Gets Real – Forget the Super Model, go for the Big Beautiful Woman

Hollywood may endorse thin and skinny, but in the real world, men prefer Big Beautiful Women. BBW is an online phenomenon that has almost become an online obsession for many men. One site celebrating BBW women and the men who admire them is www. bbwsinglesfinder. com.

(PRWEB) January 24, 2005

In this day and age of skinny super models and low-carb this and low fat that, a new online dating niche has been quietly but rapidly expanding itÂ’s bountiful wings. It is the online phenomenon called BBW. What does BBW stand for? It stands for Big Beautiful Woman. And, a recent search on any one of the most popular search engines reveal that there are over 6,200,000 websites reference her.

Why is this niche so popular? Because being overweight does not mean ugly. There are a growing number of men around the world who like voluptuous and real women. Plastic surgery may be blossoming, but many men find it a turnoff, and are looking for the real thing.

There are a growing number of online dating sites that cater specifically to BBW women and the men who are attracted to them. One particular site is www. BBWSinglesFinder. com. This site has thousands of big beautiful women who are members. What is shocking is the number of men who are members. Obviously, Hollywood may prefer their women skinny as twigs, but in the real world, men prefer curves.

J. Anthony, Webmaster for www. Alternative-Dating-Sites. com, sums it up perfectly, "I like to think of a Big Beautiful Woman as a beautiful woman who is proud of how God made her. She exudes confidence. She is healthy, but not obsessive. She is comfortable with herself and proud of it. She is a Big Beautiful Woman."

If you are single Big Beautiful Woman or a man who admires a full-figured woman, jump online and visit www. BBWSinglesFinder. com. You just might find the real soul mate you have been looking for. If nothing else, you will discover you are not alone. Skinny may be in, but BBW is reality.

Clean Harbors Buttonwillow Landfill Receives OSHA Certification

Clean Harbors Buttonwillow Landfill Receives OSHA Certification

VPP Status Recognizes Safety Culture

Buttonwillow, CA (PRWEB) February 11, 2010

Clean Harbors, the leading provider of environmental, energy and industrial services throughout North America, today announced that its Buttonwillow landfill has achieved Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star status.

VPP is a comprehensive health and safety process that requires employee involvement, management support and cooperation with Cal/OSHA. Recipients demonstrate a strong management and employee safety culture that ensures a safe and healthful workplace environment, with occupational injury and illness incidence rates below the state and national averages for companies within the same industry classification.

The certification followed a three-year safety project by Clean Harbors that was directed by a committee of employees at the 320-acre facility. They analyzed safety procedures and systematically introduced changes to conform to VPP policies. VPP, Cal/OSHA and Clean Harbors representatives conducted inspections and made additional recommendations.

"VPP certification is a rigorous process that was driven by our volunteer employee committee. All of our employees, as well as our contractors, were committed and participated in the process," commented Clean Harbors' Buttonwillow General Manager Marianna Buoni. "The certification process was a natural extension to our traditional focus on health and safety in all of our operations. The VPP designation testifies to our safety culture and our commitment to provide a healthy work environment now and in the future."

The Buttonwillow Class One landfill accepts hazardous waste, including federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) waste and materials that fall under California hazardous waste regulations. The certificate, awarded by the California Department of Industrial Relations, required the endorsement of both federal and California OSHA organizations.

Take a Stand Against Atrial Fibrillation (AF or Afib) and Stroke for Atrial Fibrillation Month

Take a Stand Against Atrial Fibrillation (AF or Afib) and Stroke for Atrial Fibrillation Month

In celebration of the fourth annual National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in September 2010, StopAfib. org asks individuals to take a stand against atrial fibrillation and stroke by viewing and sharing the Take a Stand video and by educating themselves with the Get Started Learning About Atrial Fibrillation Guide.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) August 31, 2010

In celebration of the fourth annual National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in September 2010, StopAfib. org (http://www. stopafib. org) asks individuals to take a stand against atrial fibrillation (afib) and stroke by viewing and sharing the new Take a Stand video (http://www. stopafib. org/video. cfm) and by educating themselves with the Get Started Learning About Atrial Fibrillation Guide (http://stopafib. org/newsitem. cfm/NEWSID/277/atrial%20fibrillation%20patient%20information/educate%20afib%20caregivers/).

"By taking a stand now against atrial fibrillation through educating ourselves and others with this new video and guide," says Mellanie True Hills, founder and chief executive officer of StopAfib. org, "we can get individuals diagnosed with atrial fibrillation before they have a stroke or die." Hills learned personally about this risk from having blood clots and a close call with stroke during her first atrial fibrillation episode. With the sense of urgency of a survivor, she started the non-profit StopAfib. org atrial fibrillation patient resource and launched National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month.

Sharing this video with family and friends can help wipe out atrial fibrillation strokes. The statistics in the video are from the United States due to availability, but AF isn't just a U. S. problem, it's a global problem.

The video was done as a partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and StopAfib. org.

About Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is the most common irregular heartbeat and is characterized by fast or slow heartbeats, heart palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath. This progressive and debilitating disease leads to stroke, heart failure, and Alzheimer's disease, and doubles the risk of death. More than one-third of those who have afib will have a stroke, which is the number one cause of permanent disability and the number three cause of death, and disproportionately more women than men die of strokes. According to the American Heart Association, at age forty you have a one in four lifetime chance of developing afib.

This devastating disease takes a physical toll, an emotional toll, and a financial toll on individuals and families, and has a huge impact on society through lost productivity and spiraling health care costs. Annual medical costs for someone with afib are several times those for someone without it, and those with afib have a poorer quality of life than even those who have had a heart attack. Learn if you or a loved one is at risk and how to prevent or treat it.

About StopAfib. org
StopAfib. org was founded in 2007 to improve the quality of life for those living with atrial fibrillation and to save lives by raising awareness of afib and decreasing afib-related strokes. HON Code Certified StopAfib. org is for patients by patients, and is the most visited patient arrhythmia site. It features the latest afib news and videos along with information about atrial fibrillation and stroke symptoms, causes, risks, and treatment. The Atrial Fibrillation Services Locator helps atrial fibrillation patients find hospitals, atrial fibrillation centers, electrophysiologists, and surgeons that specialize in treating afib. StopAfib. org also features atrial fibrillation resources, a newsletter for atrial fibrillation updates, the Atrial Fibrillation Blog (http://atrialfibrillationblog. com), the StopAfib Discussion Forum and Community (http://forum. stopafib. org), and the StopAfib YouTube Channel (http://www. youtube. com/stopafib) that brings top afib doctors to patients. Your donations to StopAfib. org help us continue this mission.

Medical Health Insurance in Florida: Allegiance Financial Notes Many Finding Better Coverage by Leaving Their Employer Plans Behind

Medical Health Insurance in Florida: Allegiance Financial Notes Many Finding Better Coverage by Leaving Their Employer Plans Behind

As medical health insurance costs in Florida and around the nation continue to rise, Allegiance Financial see an interesting phenomenon taking place. Families of people whose medical insurance is provided as a benefit by their employers are beginning to drop that health insurance coverage. Instead, these family members are turning to individual health insurance plans that they secure on their own, without the support of their employer.

Tampa, FL (Vocus) December 9, 2008

As medical health insurance costs in Florida and around the nation continue to rise, Allegiance Financial Services sees an interesting phenomenon taking place. Families of people whose medical insurance is provided as a benefit by their employers are beginning to drop that health insurance coverage. Instead, these family members are turning to individual health insurance plans that they secure on their own, without the support of their employer.

In many cases, people are finding they can often significantly reduce the cost of their coverage. At the same time, families can often also improve the level of their coverage, reduce deductibles and simply improve the quality of their health care coverage. The question most commonly asked is: “How can an individual get better health insurance coverage in Florida on their own? Don’t employers and their companies get cheaper and better coverage options, simply because they represent huge numbers of people?”

Surprisingly, the answer is more frequently becoming “No.” As employers are faced with heavy and growing costs of group health care plans, they often have no option but to pass these costs along to their employees. In Florida, an employer must cover at least 50% of an employee’s health insurance plan cost. However, as an employee adds on coverage for his or her family members, there is no requirement of the employer to cover any portion of these costs.

“In a situation like this, it is common for an individual to cut hundreds of dollars off their monthly health insurance cost,” points out Joseph Philipp, a health insurance specialist (http://www. humanatampa. com/) in Florida with Allegiance Financial. “Most people think that employer-sponsored health insurance plans will provide the cheapest and best coverage available. These days, that simply is just not the case.”

How can a family check and see if the cost and coverage of their employer-sponsored health insurance plan in Florida is competitive? Philipp suggests that individuals do some quick online research to answer this question. “People spend 15 minutes online to save a couple hundred bucks a year on auto insurance,” says Philipp, “but spending 15 minutes online to compare the cost of their health insurance could save them hundreds of dollars a month.”

There are dozens of online sites that allow you to quickly compare health insurance costs and coverage in Florida. The best sites to compare prices represent Florida health insurance (http://www. humanatampa. com/quote/quotes. jsp) from multiple providers. An example is http://www. humanatampa. com (http://www. humanatampa. com), a website that offers multiple coverage levels from over 45 separate health insurance providers.

Philipp sees this as a trend that will continue to become more popular. “This is simple economics. Individual coverage can often be cheaper and better than employer-sponsored plans. As more people understand this, we will see more families abandoning their company-provided medical insurance.”

Hospital Executives Discover New Revenue Sources

Hospital Executives Discover New Revenue Sources

The first of five national healthcare roundtable discussions was held in Phoenix recently, led by The Paquin Group. The topic was how the looming Medicare crisis and rising healthcare costs are forcing healthcare systems to discover ways to generate new sources of revenue.

Celebration, FL (PRWEB) July 16, 2007 –-

The looming Medicare crisis and rising healthcare costs are forcing healthcare systems to discover ways to generate new sources of revenue. On Thursday, June 28, 2007, Phoenix area hospital executives discussed a solution at the first of five national Healthcare Retail Roundtables. The Roundtable discussion was led by The Paquin Group, the nation’s leading specialist in healthcare based retail.

During the initial working session, hospital executives learned how building a healthcare retail system is the key to capturing vital new sources of revenue and is an important strategy in supporting a hospital’s mission and strategic direction.

Some hospital executives, like Michael Lopez, Director of Strategic Planning for Sun Health, went into the session with some skepticism.

“The Paquin Group makes a powerful statement about healthcare retail that challenges the traditional mindset of the business hospitals are in. During the Roundtable, we explored meaningful ways to tap into an entirely new revenue stream. I was skeptical walking in, but afterward found myself saying [that] this makes perfect sense," stated Lopez.

As consumers become more knowledgeable about their health and wellness choices, hospitals have an opportunity to offer the services their customers are seeking. Consumers are looking at healthcare differently, expecting more than just medical services.

“Healthcare systems that establish a strong healthcare retail environment, can only benefit from building long term relationships with consumers, moving them from a ‘sick only’ contact to a ‘loyalty-driven’ contact,” says Dane Richardson, Vice President of Business Development for the Paquin Group.

The next Healthcare Retail Roundtable will take place on July 26, 2007 at 11 a. m. in Southern California at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. Additional Roundtables are scheduled in Chicago, Illinois on August 22, 2007, Atlanta, Georgia on October 10, 2007 and Nashville, Tennessee on October 24, 2007.

To reserve you place for the next Healthcare Retail Roundtable in your area contact Dane Richardson at; dane. richardson @ thepaquingroup. com or please call (407) 566-1017.

The Roundtable meetings are two-hour planning sessions sponsored by The Healthcare Retail Institute.

About The Paquin Group

Nano Self-Assembly: An NSTI Executive Briefing

Nano Self-Assembly: An NSTI Executive Briefing

Move over carbon nanotubes. Another maturing vein of nano-science, "nano-structured fluids," is capturing the imagination of some of the nation's top nano researchers. The Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI) will for the first time, provide an international briefing on why "nano-structured fluids" research is poised to dramatically change the direction of traditional nano-materials work, in a variety of unexpected ways.

(PRWEB) November 1, 2004

Dynamic Self-Assembly: Nano-Structured Fluids' Hidden Gold

(PRWEB) November 1, 2004 -- Nano-structured fluids research has long been the domain of consumer products and foods companies such as L’Oréal, Proctor and Gamble, and Nestlé. Innovative work on next-generation consumer products such as cosmetics, paints, ice cream, and shampoo has been based on nano-structured fluids science for years.

"We view nano-structured fluids as a major growth area for business and scientific development. The capability of this area of science to unlock principals of self-assembly has the potential to greatly impact and accelerate commercialization of nanotechnology." Said Bart Romanowicz, NSTI executive director of technology.

But, new revelations over nano-structured fluids' remarkable property of "dynamic self-assembly" are bringing new nano-scientists to the table, according to Fiona Case, the Nanotech 2005 program chair for the event's first Nano-Structured Fluids symposium.

”In a fluid system, molecules, such as surfactants and block copolymers, or larger structures such as colloids, are free to flow around and assemble themselves into new nano-scale materials, this simply can’t happen with solids " Case said. "And, while it has long been an area of research among foods, chemical, oil and cosmetic companies, the implications for nano-materials, that go into semiconductors, for instance, are only just beginning to be understood. The broader nanotechnology community is waking up to the potential for dynamic self-assembly in a wide range of different applications."

Probing Nano's Secret of Self-Assembly

Just how big might "dynamic self-assembly" be to nano materials research? Well, some top scientists believe it could be quite big, it seems.

Researchers at Argonne National Lab's materials science division, said, "Dynamic self-assembly [which is] the spontaneous organization of materials into complex morphologies, constitutes one of the greatest hopes to nanofabrication's challenge to create ever smaller structures,"

Putting money and research cycles where their mouth is, at present Argonne is conducting research into new metal-based nano-fluids that would be used to dramatically enhance the thermal conductivity of conventional heat transfer fluids and flow smoothly in microchannel passages.

On the commercial side, IBM recently highlighted the potential for block-copolymer self-assembly to create nanometer size structures for electronics application. Elsewhere, a commercial research project is using dynamic self-assembly to develop a new prototype paint that would allow walls to react to changes in temperature or moisture by changing colors.

During > Nanotech 2005Nanotech 2005, May 8-12, Anaheim, CA. Case will chair an all-expert symposium that will further explore the State-of-the-Art of nano-structured fluids and dynamic self-assembly The symposium will include presentations from some of the leading academic groups, who will introduce self-assembled nanostructured fluids (or soft condensed matter), and share the latest developments; and also from companies who already utilize these materials such as Proctor and Gamble, Nestle and IBM. Her goal, she says, "is to help scientists that wouldn't normally think to talk to one another, tap into one another's latest discoveries."

For example, Case points out, "If I were to mention 'soft, condensed matter,' I don't think a lot of nano materials scientists would jump up and say 'That's for me.' But, the advances in computer modeling and simulation experiments (which will be featured at the Nanotech2005 symposium) make it a lot easier to put the 'fluids' scientists in the room right next to the 'materials' scientists and get them to suddenly recognize how the one area of research is applicable to the other," Case said.

"With graphics and the latest computer models of these new materials, you can get down to "First Principles" and that's where you can get professionals across fields to suddenly understand nano-structured fluids and self assembly, and apply it to their own work in amazing ways," she added.

Unlocking Nature's Own Nano-Construction Secrets

Taken another way, "dynamic self-assembly" also presents principals based on Nature's own construction approaches.

"Natural systems form nano-scale structures," Case points out. "Cells, bone, nerves all are structures on the length scales interesting to those attending Nanotech 2005. " And, these natural structures "do not require huge chemical plant and input of energy," Case said, adding: “Nature's nano-scale structures [are] formed at room temperature using the energy released from a slice of pizza. This is because natural systems use the approach of self-assembly in a fluid system."

She also added that the science of nano-structured fluids may provide some valuable insights into Nature's energy-efficient approach to nano-based construction.

"We don't yet understand how to design molecules that self-assemble into the complex structures nature creates, but we can certainly design materials that form rods or spheres, or hollow balls. And even with these simple building blocks we can start to create some quite complex structures"

Nanotech2005 Dynamic Self-Assembly Program

The keynoter for Case's Nano-Structured Fluids and Self-Assembly panel, Tim Lodge of the University of Minnesota, is a leader in researching how to design molecules that will self assemble in a controlled manner to create a specified structure. Lodge wil be joined by a distinguished group of other international researchers from the commercial and academic arenas. Among the highlighted topics and speakers are:

· Application of Polymer Self Assembly to Semiconductor Microelectronics

Philippines Hosts Foreign Delegations from US, UK and Japan; e-Services Philippines Adds Business Venture Track Following Record Attendance in 2005

Philippines Hosts Foreign Delegations from US, UK and Japan; e-Services Philippines Adds Business Venture Track Following Record Attendance in 2005

The Philippines’ biggest annual platform for IT and IT-enabled services, e-Services Philippines will be adding a Business Venture Track to address the needs and concerns of IT entrepreneurs and investors.

Manila, Philippines (PRWEB) January 2, 2006

The Philippines’ biggest annual platform for IT and IT-enabled services, e-Services Philippines will be adding a Business Venture Track to address the needs and concerns of IT entrepreneurs and investors, according to the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), organizer of the event.

“The event is aimed to consolidate the Philippines’ offerings in the world of IT. Organizations contemplating business process outsourcing (BPO) can also have the opportunity to meet, network and build relationships with some of the Philippines’ premier IT providers,” according to Department of Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary and CITEM Head Fe Agoncillo-Reyes.

E-Services Philippines 2006 (ESP ’06) is an exhibit and conference that showcases the Philippine capabilities in IT and IT-enabled services. It will be held on 16-17 February 2006 at EDSA Shangri-la Manila.

Leading IT companies and professionals are expected to attend the two-day event. Business delegates from the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and Asia are also joining the event.

ESP ’06 seeks to attract CEOs, policy makers, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists and investors. Besides the exhibit, the show will also feature a high-level knowledge conference dealing with contemporary issues on IT-enabled services, a business venture track for IT entrepreneurs and investors and a roundtable discussion with key Japanese IT players.

ESP ’06 is expected to be a bigger hit than last year’s. The previous edition drew more than 100 companies; 2,000 business visitors, and international delegates, speakers and panelists from the US, Japan, France, Canada, India and China.

The show is also expected to draw substantial attendance from the country’s major IT and BPO industry associations, namely the Business Processing Association of the Philippines, Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines, Animation Council of the Philippines, Philippine Software Industry Association and Cebu and Davao Associations.

Meanwhile, the e-Services Philippines Conference will throw light on the different issues, opportunities and challenges in the different e-services tracks: BPO, animation, data transcription, software development, wireless applications, network and security, engineering and design.

The event will also feature IT companies that were past recipients of the much coveted e-Services Philippines Awards for outstanding products and services in the e-Services Philippines Awardees Zone.

Agoncillo-Reyes said that, in order to attract global participation, e-Services Philippines has been promoted in Europe through the Philippine participation in OutsourceWorld London and business mission in The Netherlands and the UK. The Europe mission was organized by CITEM, the Board of Investments (BOI), in coordination with the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Rotterdam and London. Over a dozen European firms expressed their interest to do business with Philippine IT and IT-enabled services companies.

Nigel Roxburgh, founding director of the National Outsourcing Association in the United Kingdom, is one of the featured speakers in e-Services Philippines 2006. According to Roxburgh, “The UK market – the European leader in terms of both size and maturity – presents tremendous opportunities to Philippine BPO companies with bundled horizontal offerings like F&A combined with HR and supply management. Attendance of this outsourcing conference is a ‘must-have’ for such companies to know more about the UK’s business environment and at the same time learn how to move up the BPO value chain and gain a foothold in the European marketplace.”

To date, the BOI together with CITEM has sent delegations to OutsourceWorld New York and American Health and Information Management Association (AHIMA) Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, California in a bid to promote international attendance to the show and attract foreign investors.

The Philippines over the last five years has emerged as a business hub for diverse IT markets such as contact centers, software development, design and engineering, animation and graphic design, medical and legal transcription, and financial and HR-related BPO.

The Kearney Index of 2004 ranked the Philippines among the top ten locations for business process outsourcing, scoring high in the both financial and HR indexes.

The Philippines as an IT and ITES hub

The Philippines’ IT-enabled services sector has been rapidly growing aided over the last few years due to the country’s many attractive attributes as an ideal e-services hub:

Based on the study by neoIT, a leading offshore advisory and management firm for BPO and ITO, the Philippines is the second top global sourcing provider in Business Process Outsourcing and Call Center, with a diverse portfolio of outsource-ready cities namely Manila, Cebu, Davao, Clark, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Bacolod, Baguio and Dumaguete.

The Filipino workforce is consistently ranked as among the very best in Asia by such international authorities as the Economist Intelligence Unit and Swiss International Institute for Management Development (IIMD). The Philippines graduates approximately 385,000 young professionals a year, with English as the primary medium of instruction.

World-class telecom infrastructure is one of the chief benefits of the Philippines' leadership in fostering a liberalized business environment in Asia. The Philippines was the first Asian country to liberalize its telecom sector, and demonstrates several important benefits as a result. For instance, it is a leader in all types of wireless communication, both data and voice. And communications costs are among the lowest in the region.

A pro-business, pro-investor government welcomes the opportunity to create jobs and boost economic growth through investment in ITES and other progressive sectors. One hundred percent foreign ownership is permitted, and substantial financial incentives are available to investors through the Board of Investment and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, including tax holidays and duty-free importation of capital equipment.

Government policies are attuned to business with the enactment of the E-Commerce Law, Intellectual Property Code, including policies on data security.

It has internationally awarded real estate developers offering dedicated ITES locations that feature redundant communications infrastructure and world-class facilities in Metro Manila as well as in provincial urban centers. Based on CB Richard Ellis’ Global 50 Index study in 2004, the real estate availability and quality in the Philippines is one of the best in the regions.

Its strategic location is readily accessible from the major travel centers of the world, namely Hongkong, Singapore, London, and Los Angeles to name a few.

A western-influenced educational system assures a steady supply of knowledge workers. Government and the private sector are working closely together to refine curricula to reflect the requirements of ITES sectors for graduates with strong hard science and language skills throughout the academic system. Also, its accounting practices adhere to the US’ Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The banking sector is among Asia's most modern, and is closely aligned with international banking and investment practices.

It offers hospitable lifestyle for expatriates. In a survey by PERC Hongkong (2000), the Philippines is the top choice of expatriates in terms of quality of life among other Asia Pacific countries, for reasons such as friendliness, value for money housing, modern recreational facilities, and first rate educational institutions.
