Geneva Global Partners with U. S. Government to Benefit Tsunami Survivors, Vulnerable Families and Youth in Sri Lanka with Charitable Projects Investigated for "Proven Results" and "Successful Performance" ("Performance Philanthropy")

Geneva Global Partners with U. S. Government to Benefit Tsunami Survivors, Vulnerable Families and Youth in Sri Lanka with Charitable Projects Investigated for "Proven Results" and "Successful Performance" ("Performance Philanthropy")

The U. S. Agency for International Development recently announced that it had formed a two year partnership with Geneva Global(www. genevaglobal. com) to aid vulnerable families, youth and children in Sri Lanka to improve their health and to combat human trafficking and domestic abuse. While a portion of the money will be earmarked for tsunami survivors, a significant other part will be earmarked for projects all over Sri Lanka, many of which have lost funding as a result of the tsunami.

Wayne, PA (PRWEB) July 5, 2005

The U. S. Agency for International Development recently announced that it had formed a two year partnership with Geneva Global Inc. to help vulnerable families, youth and children in Sri Lanka improve their health and to combat human trafficking and domestic abuse.

Geneva Global, which conducts rigorous investigation of grassroots charitable projects in Sri Lanka and throughout the Third World, presents its findings about the most effective charities to high net worth American donors, who are interested in charitable giving based not only on "need" but on "proven results." Geneva has coined this idea "Performance Philanthropy" - giving with an "investment mindset."

While a portion of the money will be earmarked for tsunami survivors, a significant other part will be earmarked for projects all over Sri Lanka, many of which have lost funding as a result of the tsunami.

Geneva Global Inc. (www. genevaglobal. com) is a philanthropic research and international grantmaking firm providing independent research and insight to thoughtful donors. The firm was created by donors for donors and it is retained by purposeful, private wealthy donors and foundations who wish to directly and positively change the lives of less advantaged people around the world.

Geneva Global is differentiated by its investment approach to philanthropy, its independence, a global network of local implementers and a proven track record. Based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, the company is a USAID Registered Agency.

“Geneva Global received a $1.5 million cash grant from USAID, and has matched that amount on a dollar for dollar basis from its private donor clients, making contributions totaling $3 million for 65 social and development projects throughout Sri Lanka,” said Eric Thurman, Geneva's CEO.

The USAID-Geneva Global alliance covers a 24 month time span, from May 16, 2005 to May 17, 2007, that will benefit up to 216,000 individuals.

Geneva Global will network with humanitarian organizations that have at least two years of experience working with issues of human trafficking, trauma/rehabilitation, and community development.

Some 39-42 projects will address vulnerable youth and families through economic development, community care for highly vulnerable children, vocational opportunities for youth, reducing domestic and sexual violence, combating child sex tourism and preventing trafficking in persons.

Geneva will direct grants to another 23-26 projects designed to improve accessible health care, including programs aimed at public health initiatives, prevention of HIV/AIDS and providing psychological/social counseling to people in tsunami-affected districts.

Geneva Global has already held the Grant Bidders Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka on June 7th, 2005. Over 200 participants representing over 100 potential implementing organizations attended the conference and were screened by Geneva researchers for compatibility with the developmental goals of USAID/Geneva Global. Starting in July, projects will be approved and published each month.

Geneva works throughout the developing world. It has recruited over 500 experts, stationed strategically in these countries, to rigorously investigate and perform due diligence on grassroots charitable projects, identifying those that have a successful and proven track record of performance.

After uncovering the unsung heroes and heroines who are changing lives for the better, Geneva Global documents and analyzes the research findings into an investment report (called a Delta Report TM) which is then presented to a donor for review.

Recent news reports have indicated that in spite of billions of dollars raised by outside agencies for tsunami relief, little money has yet to reach survivors. Geneva Global offers donors the assurance of facilitating the delivery of their contributions directly to local, grassroots projects that have undergone rigorous scrutiny and due diligence, and have proven themselves successful in providing immediate and effective relief to those in distress.

Geneva's philanthropic research spans the world, and the locally managed projects it has identified are situated in over 80 countries in the developing world.

Metabolist Norman Benjamin's New Book "How Fat-How Thin" Shows Diets Fail; Tells How To Reduce Obesity, Restore Wellness

Metabolist Norman Benjamin's New Book "How Fat-How Thin" Shows Diets Fail; Tells How To Reduce Obesity, Restore Wellness

Metabolist Norman Benjamin pens new book "How Fat-How Thin" (www. howfathowthin. com) explaining why dieting doesn't work and demonstrates effective techniques to reduce obesity and restore wellness. Mr. Benjamin is a recognized expert on metabolism. His book tells us how to live longer and healthier lives by understanding our own metabolism.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2009

How Fat--How Thin: The 101 Best-Kept Secrets About Our Metabolism and Some Surprising Insights into Our Origins and Lifestyles (www. howfathowthin. com) offers a clear, hands-on approach to physical and mental fitness from metabolism authority and expert Norman Benjamin. The new book shows that the key to reducing obesity and stress, while maximizing energy, health and longevity potential, is better understanding our own metabolism, which therefore leads to eating and exercising properly. How Fat--How Thin debunks many of the popular myths and misguided beliefs about health, diet and exercise.

"My target audience with this new book (www. howfathowthin. com) is people with lifestyle problems, such as overweight and eating disorders, but it is also written for physical educators and personal trainers who may not be up on biochemistry and metabolism," Benjamin explains. "It describes many situations where our 'common sense' leads us astray, inducing us to accept a lot of misinformation about exercise and diet."

Benjamin's book provides many recent scientific findings and new insights. One is that diets are counter-productive, unless they are slow-go and accompanied by increased physical activity, preferably under the guidance of a doctor and a physical trainer.

"Obesity is the product of eating excess," Benjamin says. "Dieting―or under-eating―produces a very different type of damage, but, in fact, it removes very little lipid fat. Liposuction can produce esthetic results for those with low body fat, but it can be harmful to the obese--because it ultimately makes them fatter. Radical approaches, such as crash diets, are occasionally necessary for the urgent treatment of the morbidly obese, but they are highly inappropriate for anyone not immediately facing a life-threatening condition.

Benjamin adds, "Sugar is metabolized so rapidly that unless it is accompanied―or immediately followed by―physical activity, it has nowhere to go except to lipid fat reserves. On the other hand, chronic and/or intense exercise frequently requires that we supplement sugar-like high-absorption carbohydrates on the fly. In principal, the short answer to almost any question about how best to deal with our metabolism is the seemingly evasive: 'it depends.'"

Brazilian CEO and author Simon Maurice Franco says, "Aside from laying out in very comprehensive language the nuts and bolts of our metabolisms, Mr. Benjamin has captured, in a very subtle manner, the real doubts that many of us have about what is fact and what is fiction regarding our bodies and their functions. He has given us simple, straight and convincing responses. This is one of those rare books about diets, health, exercise and metabolism that does not make you feel guilty."

Ben Martin, faculty member at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Los Angeles, and adjunct instructor in Communications at Santa Monica College, writes, "I don't usually read books about health and wellness, but a friend sent me this book, and despite my natural resistance I found it impossible to put down. Its unpretentious, breezy style and 'small-bite' chapters make it eminently readable. I found it a thoroughly enjoyable wake up."

About Author Norman Benjamin
Author and physiologist Norman Benjamin grew up in New York City, earned a B. S. degree from Hunter College in psychology and anthropology, did graduate studies in paleobiology at City University of New York and received graduate degrees in physiology (with specialization in the lipid metabolism and energy exchange) from the University of Sao Paulo's Centre for Biomedical Research. He has consulted to physical fitness academies in Sao Paulo and has conducted research in lipid metabolism and longevity at the University of Sao Paulo.

SiCKO "Hitman" Lee Einer Writes Second Guest Column Exposing Health Insurance Industry Secrets for HonestMedicine. com

SiCKO "Hitman" Lee Einer Writes Second Guest Column Exposing Health Insurance Industry Secrets for HonestMedicine. com

Lee Einer, the man Michael Moore referred to as the Health Insurance Industry "Hitman" in SiCKO, has recently written his second guest column for the award-winning health advocacy blog, www. HonestMedicine. com. The blog's creator, Julia Schopick, announced the posting of Mr. Einer's column, "The Truth About Self-Funded Plans" (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/the-truth-about. html), today.

Oak Park, IL (PRWEB) January 17, 2008

Lee Einer, the man Michael Moore referred to as the Health Insurance Industry "Hitman" in SiCKO, has recently written his second guest column for the award-winning health advocacy blog, HonestMedicine. com. The blog's creator, Julia Schopick, announced the posting of Mr. Einer's column, "The Truth About Self-Funded Plans" (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/the-truth-about. html (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/the-truth-about. html)), today.

Ms. Schopick says, "In SiCKO, Michael Moore did a terrific job of exposing the fact that many of us who THINK we're insured really do need to worry because, so often, insurance companies deny our claims for very reasonable, very necessary treatments. But Michael Moore's film painted the situation with a broad stroke, without exposing the different kinds of plans, and the different ways in which they mislead the public. The public doesn't understand that some health plans are more equal than others. That's what Lee's HonestMedicine. com columns are about."

Einer's first two guest columns expose flaws in two very specific kinds of health insurance plans. His first column, "Faux Health Insurance for the Self-Employed: The Sham, The Scam, The Shame of It" (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2007/08/sicko-hitman-le. html (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2007/08/sicko-hitman-le. html)), exposed the little-understood, but very widespread, insurance industry practice of health insurance for the self-employed person. Einer points out, "Many of these plans for the self-employed are quite deceptive; all the plans I spoke about in SiCKO were of this variety. It's a real shame that so many people who are self-employed go out and purchase insurance on their own -- out of necessity -- with the sincere belief that these policies will cover them when they get sick. But in far too many cases, what they purchase -- at very high rates, I might add, and often with extremely high deductibles -- is health insurance in name only. True health insurance requires a POOL OF MEMBERS, all of whom share in the risk. With an individual policy, there is no shared risk. It's a real shame -- and a real sham."

Einer's just-posted Honest Medicine column, "The Truth About Self-Funded Plans" (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/the-truth-about. html (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/the-truth-about. html)), addresses the fact that many employers choose to provide their employees with "self-funded" health plans, instead of traditional insurance coverage. Contrary to what most employees think, these plans are NOT the same as regular health insurance plans. And the employees who have these plans should know HOW they are different. Most often, they don't. As Einer describes it: "Most employees don't even realize they are covered by a self-funded plan rather than an employer group insurance plan. Employers who offer self-funded plans are NOT required to follow state laws governing health insurance; additionally, employers with self-funded plans can direct that claims for their top management and their families get paid 'outside the plan' -- i. e., paid even when the terms of the plan would result in claim denials for their rank and file employees. So, a self-funded plan may end up refusing an employee's lifesaving treatment while, at the same time, covering the CEO's (or his wife's) cosmetic surgery." Einer feels that it is very important that employees have all the information about their plans before they get sick, so there will be fewer surprises later on, when they are most vulnerable. IMPORTANT NOTE: Mr. Einer adds: "The recent, very controversial, case of Nataline Sarkisyan, the 17-year old girl who was denied a liver transplant, was an example of a self-funded plan. Most people -- including most of the media -- did not realize this fact."

Mr. Einer views his appearance in Michael Moore's SiCKO as the beginning of his efforts to inform the public about the outrageous nature of America's health insurance industry. "I am so happy that Honest Medicine is providing me with the opportunity to tell more of the true story about insurance companies than there was time for in SiCKO. People were shocked by what they saw in SiCKO. I am determined to give them more information about the tricks some insurance companies and employers play, so that people won't continue to get fooled and shortchanged."

Julia Schopick, who runs HonestMedicine. com (http://www. honestmedicine. com/ (http://www. honestmedicine. com/)), says that Lee Einer's guest columns are in keeping with the mission of her website. "In the 15 years before he died, my husband Tim Fisher was the survivor of a very serious, cancerous brain tumor. So, during those years, we got to witness firsthand the mess our healthcare system has become. After Tim's death, I started my medical advocacy blog, in order to expose lots of the myths and flaws surrounding the healthcare industry. Publishing Mr. Einer's columns fits in beautifully with my website's mission."

In addition to these two guest columns by Lee Einer, HonestMedicine. com also contains an audio interview with him and a review of SiCKO. (Both may be found at http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/honestmedicines. html (http://www. honestmedicine. com/2008/01/honestmedicines. html).) Since its inception in May, 2006, HonestMedicine. com has also exposed many other kinds of flaws in our healthcare system, in both its articles and its podcasts. Ms. Schopick's next podcast - and Honest Medicine's first interview of 2008, planned for February -- will be with Shannon Brownlee, award-winning author of "Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine Is Making Us Sicker and Poorer" (http://www. overtreated. com/ (http://www. overtreated. com/)).

To interview Lee Einer or Julia Schopick -- or both -- please contact Ms. Schopick at 708-848-4788 or by email at JuliaS1573(at)aol. com.

Dr. Mark Wilhelm Announces Revolutionary Dental Caries Treatment That Prevents Cavities

Dr. Mark Wilhelm Announces Revolutionary Dental Caries Treatment That Prevents Cavities

Dr. Mark Wilhelm, DMD MSD, today announced that he has created the first Dental Caries Management Program in Minnesota. The program is unique in that it provides Dr. Wilhelm with a way to proactively diagnose and prevent dental caries prior to a patient getting their first cavity. Most treatment plans today focus solely on the symptoms of dental caries (cavities), not on prevention or a cure. Dr. Wilhelm's revolutionary program can treat and reverse dental caries, giving patients an easy, affordable and painless solution to prevent what has been a debilitating problem.

Woodbury, Minnesota (PRWEB) February 27, 2007

Dr. Wilhelm, DMD MSD, today announced that he has created the first Dental Caries Management Program in Minnesota. The Program is unique in that it provides Dr. Wilhelm's cosmetic dentistry practice (http://www. imagineyoursmile. com/aboutus. php) with a way to proactively diagnose and prevent dental caries prior to a patient getting their first cavity. Most treatment plans today focus solely on the symptoms of dental caries (cavities), not on prevention or a cure. Dr. Wilhelm's program targets the biofilm, where cavity-creating bacteria grows, to treat and reverse dental caries, giving patients an easy, affordable and painless solution to a debilitating problem.

"More than any other technology that I've owned or techniques I've learned, this program has the most potential to change peoples' lives," said Dr. Wilhelm. "Until now I've only been able to treat dental caries through restoration and extraction. Now I can provide my patients with a noninvasive and affordable way to prevent or reverse a disease that was once thought incurable."

Over the last one hundred years treatment has focused on eliminating bacteria by emphasizing oral hygiene and fluoride application. When that has failed, dental implants (http://www. imagineyoursmile. com/implant_dentistry. php) and sedation dentistry (http://www. imagineyoursmile. com/sedation. php) treatment is provided to restore or replace the tooth. And so the symptomatic-cycle begins, patients continue to get cavities and restoration treatment without addressing the cause of the cavities. Dr. Wilhelm's Dental Caries Management Program is the first to provide dental caries prevention and restoration by first testing and measuring the level of bacterial activity in a patient's mouth and then treating and altering the biofilm to create and keep healthy teeth. The treatment is then followed up with maintenance rinses, personal oral hygiene and professional exams.

Who is affected by Dental Caries?

Dental caries (cavities) and periodontal diseases are the most common oral diseases and 85 percent of adults in the US are affected. Although dental caries is largely preventable, it remains the most common chronic disease of children aged 5 to 17 years - five times more common than asthma. Many adults also have untreated dental caries (27% of those 35 to 44 years old and 30% of those 65 years and older).

Statistics from Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General (2000) and National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (2005).

About Dr. Mark Wilhelm, DMD MSD

Dr. Wilhelm (http://www. imagineyoursmile. com/aboutus. php) has been in private practice in St. Paul and now Woodbury, Minnesota since 1990, where he is focused on cosmetic dentistry, sedation dentistry, advanced restorative and implant dentistry. Over the years, he has integrated technology into his practice, allowing him to treat his patients using minimally invasive dentistry. For more information about Dr Wilhelm's practice, visit his Web site at www. imagineyoursmile. com.

He is recognized as a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and is an active member of the American College of Prosthodontists, American Dental Association, and Minnesota Dental Association. He is also an associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and a consultant with the Cleft Lip and Palate clinic. An author, mentor and frequent speaker to dentists and the public on techniques that enhance oral health, Dr Wilhelm continually travels the world to improve his understanding and skill level in implant, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry.

Social Workers Promote Health - Both Physical Health and Mental Health

Social Workers Promote Health - Both Physical Health and Mental Health

Social workers know that mental health is fundamental to physical health, just as physical health affects mental health. Social workers advocate quality healthcare and mental health parity for everyone.

(PRWEB) March 2, 2002 -

Social workers know that mental health is fundamental to physical health, just as physical health affects mental health. Social workers advocate quality healthcare and mental health parity for everyone. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is at the forefront of this battle.

Social workers are the nationÂ’s leading providers of mental health and therapy services. They also provide direct healthcare services to patients and their families. They are a key part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team providing for follow-up services, such as discharge planning and evaluation, as well as administration and research.

In the unprecedented report on mental health, Dr. David Satcher, Surgeon General of the Unites States, says that nearly one in five Americans are affected by mental illness in any given year. Social workers are among many who support mental health parity.

“Social workers everywhere advocate for change. People need to have access to healthcare and mental health services on an equal basis. There are some 44 million Americans without health insurance - in a country of such wealth, that is unacceptable. Social workers guide those in need through the system to help them get the care they need,” says Dr. Elizabeth J. Clark, Executive Director of NASW.

Northwestern Institute of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, provides inpatient psychiatric services for patients of all ages. We salute the fine work of the nationÂ’s social workers.

Northwestern Institute offers a toll-free 24 Hour HOTLINE to help those in mental health crisis. Call 800-256-5300.

United States Expects Ban-Free Beef Imports On Japan

United States Expects Ban-Free Beef Imports On Japan

Japan is one of US beef top markets and Japan is also one of the major beef importers in the world. It has actually exported $1.7 billion worth of Japanese beef in the US in 2002.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 2, 2006

After several months of investigating and changing agreements on United States beef imports to Japan, the latter has decided to finally end the banning of American beef importers that was imposed in January 20, 2006. Ban on American beef was executed when dangerous backbone parts were found in American beef shipments. The event concludes in the assumption that all American beef importers transport beef that are dangerous to Japanese health.

Japan imposed the banning of US beef imports due to the detection of bovine spine or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) that was feared to cause the mad cow disease. The mad cow disease is a condition found in cows that utterly affects its entire nervous system. The harmful element cause the cattle to experience nervousness, to have abnormality in posture, difficulty in muscle coordination, low appetite, and low milk production. Instead of producing nutrients, the cattle may give harmful products that would infringe health. Japanese officials were alarmed of the dangerous elements found in US beef imports for it may affect people who consume the products. Thus, American importers are executing several measures to calm Japan's assumption.

Consequently, Japan suspended the trade of beef between them and United States. Thus, last May of this year, Japan and United States had a two-day convention in Tokyo to discuss about the necessary steps that the US needs to pursue so that beef trade in Japan will open again. The convention was comprised by Japanese officials as well as US health and farm administration. In the said convention, Japan asked the US to allow their health officials to conduct an investigation on US meat packing utilities and their beef processing facilities that were for exports to Japan. Abiding by the rules of investigation, American beef importers obeyed Japan's requirement.

Japan does not only protect its country and people if there were violations found in any standard procedures on beef processing and if there was any mad cow disease symptoms proven on American cattle. For, United States is a major asset among beef importers across the globe and many countries will be affected by its imported products. In 2004-2005 statistics, the United States has produced a total of 461 million pounds or 552 million dollars from its beef exports around the world. Thus, it proves that fear and worry across the global beef market will be experienced if the American cattle production is discovered to have various animal diseases such as the mad cow disease.

Currently, Japan has officially reported the result of their inspection of beef processing plants in America. Japanese investigators say they did not find any violations that affect the process of US beef imports. Therefore, the two trading countries agree on easing the moratorium of American beef importers after assuring its health security by implementing export quarantine standards in United States meat processing facilities. Washington expects Tokyo to officially reopen the beef trade on Thursday.

Japan is one of US beef top markets and Japan is also one of the major beef importers in the world. It has actually exported $1.7 billion worth of Japanese beef in the US in 2002. After the closure of the case, Japan implements a tighter inspection on every American beef product to ensure the security of Japanese health and to continue the US-Japan beef trade with harmony.

Japan Times says after the official announcement of the reopening of beef trade, United States beef goods may enter Japanese coast by last week of July after its suspension for almost six months. Today, the Japanese regulators on beef imports make their final necessary preparations for the importers of American beef. They also ensure that Japan is a mad-cow-disease-free country as the Japanese government also imposes strict inspection on other beef importers as it implements stiffer standard procedures on imported goods.

Allentown, PA, March 20, 2002: Turn any room into a boxing studio with the flip of a switch! As the popularity of boxing and kickboxing exercising continues to increase, club owners are challenged to create enough space for classes and personal training. Health clubs recognize that boxing workouts are an important part of fitness today, however, dedicating even a portion of a room to boxing can be difficult for many facilities. Balazs Boxing has engineered a simple solution to this problem—the overhead Track System for heavy bags.

Facilities without dedicated boxing areas often choose to temporarily hang heavy bags in multipurpose rooms. But hanging and removing heavy bags, which often weigh 100-pounds or more, as needed for classes and individual training, is time consuming and potentially dangerous.

The Balazs Track System eliminates the need to manually hang and remove heavy bags. The system consists of a ceiling-mounted track and moveable trolleys that hold the bags. A centrally located switch operates a locking mechanism in each trolley that either locks the trolley in position, or allows it to move freely along the track. The tracks can extend into a closet or remote area of a room where the bags are stored when not in use, thereby freeing up the room for other activities. The simple system and easy-to-move trolleys make converting the boxing room a quick and easy task for even the most petite fitness instructor.

The layout of the Balazs Track System can be individually customized to meet each facility's preferences and structural requirements. In addition, all trolleys feature Balazs' patented Heavy Hanging System (H2S), which reduces the noise, vibration, and jarring that cause excess wear and tear on heavy bags.

The Balazs Track System is ideal for anyone who needs to move a punching bag on a regular basis—from clubs with group classes using 15 or more bags to personal training studios working with a single client. Now, the same room can easily be used for aerobics, yoga and kickboxing classes.

Balazs sells its top-of-the-line boxing gear to individuals, health clubs and retailers. Located in Allentown, Pa, Balazs Boxing has hit the market as the premier designer and manufacturer of commercial-grade boxing equipment, with customers in over 100 countries. AP9*At Home Rewards Provides Tips to Help Warm Up Home Furnishings This Winter

AP9*At Home Rewards Provides Tips to Help Warm Up Home Furnishings This Winter

At Home Rewards Offers Winter Decorating Ideas to Keep Rooms Cozy, Warm

Norwalk, Conn. (PRWEB) November 12, 2008

At Home Rewards (http://www. athomerewards-program. com/AtHomeRewards_ResourceCenter_Article2.html) (SM), a leading membership discount program offered by Adaptive Marketing LLC (http://www. adaptivemarketing. com/ap9/athomerewards. asp)®, wants to help with the interior decorating this -- and every -- season. From the living room to the dining room to any and all other rooms in between, At Home Rewards (http://ap9consumergateway. typepad. com/ap9_articles/ap9_athomerewards/index. html) has decorating tips and ideas to keep things warm and toasty all winter long.

AP9*AtHomeRewards (http://homeandgarden. mygreatdeals. com/) realizes that home decorating is a very individual pursuit; each room says something about the person who eats, sleeps, and lives there. With that in mind, let these tips and ideas simply be a guide to keeping things cozy, warm, and inviting all winter long.
Throw me a throw. Beat Old Man Winter to the punch this year by introducing some fluffy and warm throws and pillows into each bedroom. Pick those pillows and throws that are great for snuggling, and select colors that suggest cozy comfort. Inject some flower power. No, that's not intended to be a throwback to the 1960s. Instead, it's a call to place seasonal flower arrangements in the kitchen, living room, and foyer. Consider arrangements like pine and holiday poinsettias to keep things bright -- especially when conditions outside may be rainy, snowy, or just plain dreary. Do it in reverse. Decorating for that "winter feel" also means looking ahead to the next season. For example, choose (or make) draperies that are reversible. This way, it'll be that much easier to turn them from "winter neutral" to "spring lively." Make it as snug as a bug in a rug. While bare floors and naked windows are ideal for the warmer months, such décor might get a little nippy in the colder ones. For that reason, consider either wall-to-wall carpeting (choose a color that's friendly year-round) or some good-looking seasonal area rugs. Don't sulk; fight back. If it starts to feel like winter is getting too long, just forget the calendar. There's no law against festooning a room with spring things just because temperatures are still cold and there's snow on the ground. Sure, colder temps may still call for heavier blankets, but give every room in the house an uplifting look. And no worries; Old Man Winter won't stay forever.

AP9*AtHomeRewards is all about giving its members useful tricks and tips on all kinds of in-home savings and home improvement ideas. From winter decorating decisions to family budgeting tips to food and entertainment ideas, save and plan all year long with At Home Rewards.

Is HRT Giving Menopausal Women Cancer?

Is HRT Giving Menopausal Women Cancer?

Women going through menopause may have more concerns. Recent research linking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with increased risk of breast cancer, strokes, and heart disease

Cordova, TN (PRWEB) February 10, 2006

If you had to choose between (A) hot flashes or (B) breast cancer, which would you choose? Or how about this one: (A) depression and sleeplessness or (B) a stroke?

With all the recent research linking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with increased risk of breast cancer, strokes, and heart disease, many women feel compelled to choose to stick out the pains of menopause in order to stay healthy in the long run.

The Women’s Health Initiative has conducted several clinical trials evaluating HRT treatments in order to determine whether the benefits of HRT outweighed the risks; the conclusion was that they did not.

They found that women on estrogen-progestin combination therapy have an increased risk of breast cancer by 26 percent, stroke by 41 percent, heart attack by 29 percent, and blood clots by around 50 percent, and women on estrogen alone have an increased risk of stroke by 39 percent and blood clots by 47 percent.

Based on these findings, it is easy to see why so many women choose to deal with their symptoms rather than get help.

However, Selmedica Healthcare of Memphis, TN sees no reason why menopausal women should have to suffer, which is why they created Peritol.

Peritol is a blend of highly specialized botanicals which Selmedica claims gives the female body the nutrients it needs to maintain balance during the transition into menopause. Selmedica’s customers apparently agree, as one of their many satisfied customers proclaims: “I am so glad someone finally created an all-natural menopause aid that actually works.”

UCT Children's Institute: Concretising children's rights in national policy, laws and programmes in South Africa

UCT Children's Institute: Concretising children's rights in national policy, laws and programmes in South Africa

Mrs Graca Machel, an internal children's patron to the United Nations and Chancellor of the University of Cape Town will be officiating in the launch of a children's Institute in the University of Cape Town, South Africa on the 25 of September 2002 at Welgelegen, off Chapel Road, Rondebosch from 17: 00 - 19: 00. The Launch will be follwed with an Open Day on 26 September at the Children's Institute at 46 Sawkins Road in Rondebosch from 9:00 - 16:45.

(PRWEB) September 22, 2002

"Children are the nucleus of sustainable development. Relatively small investments in their health, education and welfare pay huge dividends for society," says children's rights campaigner and University of Cape Town Chancellor Mrs Graça Machel.

Mrs Graca Machel is the Chairperson of the Board of the Children's Institute (CI) and she will officiate at its launch on Wednesday, 25 September at 17h00. You are cordially invited to attend this function at Welgelegen, off Chapel Road, Rondebosch, as well as an Open Day on 26 September at the Children's Institute at 46 Sawkins Road in Rondebosch from 9:00 - 16:45.

Prof Marian Jacobs, the Director of the Children's Institute, says the CI's objectives include characterising challenges confronting children in South Africa and contributing to policy and programme approaches to address these challenges.

The major challenges facing children in South Africa include poverty, AIDS and trauma and violence. Almost 70% of our children, that is, approximately 10.5 million children under 18 years (IDASA), live in poverty, with insufficient income to meet their basic needs. Each year over 100 000 babies are born HIV+ and it is estimated that by 2016, 15% of children will have been orphaned due to AIDS (MRC 2002). In light of the enormity of these challenges, the CI focuses its attention on policies, laws, and programme approaches to these challenges that will have the largest impact on the greatest number of children.

The CI also aims to evaluate the impact of policies and programme approaches, to stimulate interdisciplinary child policy research and training, and to strengthen practitioner and researcher capacity in evidence-based approaches to child policies and practices.

The forerunner to the UCT Children's Institute, the Child Health Policy Institute (CHPI) played a significant role in health policy reform in South Africa, especially in addressing the initiation, analysis, development and evaluations of child health policies and programmes. It also played a pivotal role in advocating for children's rights, health and well-being.

The experience of the CHPI over five years led to considerations towards establishing a child policy research unit with a focus beyond health and applying policy research and advocacy to children's issues across the sectors. With the generous support of donors, the Children's Institute (CI) was established at the University of Cape Town in July 2001. The CI will build on the foundation and experience of the CHPI and expand to address priority challenges facing children across the sectors.

"The new Institute will continue to ensure that legislation, policies and programmes are beneficial to all children living in South Africa. It bridges the gap between research and policy, drawing on a range of expertise within the UCT environment, " says Jacobs.

According to Professor Marian Jacobs, academic institutions have a social responsibility to promote the protection and fulfilment of children's rights. "The commitments to children are dependent on the actions of a broad alliance of constituencies - from government to civil society. Within this alliance, there is a niche for the academic institution," adds Jacobs.

The Children's Institute has Research and Advocacy Programmes, which focus on:

§ Child Rights

§ Child Health Services

§ HIV/AIDS

§ Social Security

§ Trauma and Violence

These Programmes conduct primary and secondary research and channel their research findings and recommendations into national policy and law reform processes.

Key law and policy reform processes with which they are currently engaged, include:

§ The Review of the Child Care Act (currently being reviewed and re-written by the South African Law Commission)

§ The Draft National Health Bill (scheduled to be tabled in Parliament in 2003)

§ National School Health Services Policy Guidelines (developed by the Children's Institute for the Department of Health)

§ Draft Policy on the Delivery of health services to children with Chronic Diseases (policy currently being drafted by the Department of Health)

§ Social Security Policy and Law Reform (Committee of Inquiry into a Comprehensive Social Security System and the review of the Social Assistance Act)

§ Developing a national policy on health and social services for children who have been orphaned. (The Children's Institute has been commissioned by the Department of Health to conduct the research needed for this policy)

§ Developing a new tool for service providers tasked with assessing whether children with disabilities and chronic health conditions (including HIV/AIDS) qualify for a social assistance grant. (The current Care Dependency Grant for children with disabilities is not accessible to many children who need it partly due to the assessment tool being cumbersome and based on a purely medical model that does not assess the child's needs from a social perspective).

The Cyborgization Of Humans And What This Means For Our Lives In The Future And Today

The Cyborgization Of Humans And What This Means For Our Lives In The Future And Today

The National Capital Region World Future Society and the American Society for Technical Innovation (ASTI) on July 15,2004 will host a dinner discussion, and demonstration, of wearable computer technology, available now with new products that will be on the market soon, that has the potential to link man with machine in new ways drastically changing and improving peoples lives via information technology. Mark Bayliss, CEO of Visual Link will talk to us about new product releases by the partnership, as well as take a look at what these technology advances mean for us in the future as humans, the impact on health, the economics of doing business, warfare, and other arenas. Joel Coulter, Business Development Advisor to the Chairman of Xybernaut Corp. will demonstrate some of their new wearable computer products.

(PRWEB) July 13, 2004

When we think of the Borg shown in Star Trek: First Contact, we think of a dehumanized alien species melded from human and machine parts. Most of us do not think we are even close to having the level of technology depicted in that film. Well, we’re wrong. Visual Link Inc., an Internet communications company, and Xybernaut Corporation, a mobile device development company, have partnered to take communications and computer devices to the next step of evolution and interaction with humans – high level mobile computing in vehicles and on people.

From a body-worn, voice-activated, high-power processor, to a single eye visual display of 2”x2”, Visual Link and Xybernaut have combined mobility, communications, battery innovations, compression and visualization technologies to create a new level of communications and computing technology. Their purpose is to increase human mobility, efficiency, productivity, performance and safety.

Visual Link is a leader in developing and deploying advanced Internet services. Visual Link consists of three divisions: Visual Link Internet, Cobalt Racks and WorldAirWaves. Together these three companies make up a full spectrum of Internet services that allow Visual Link to offer innovative solutions ranging from residential, corporate to Government Services and solutions. Visual Link currently provides Internet related services to over 40 countries throughout the world, with its main office located in Winchester VA and additional offices in Canada and Russia.

Xybernaut was founded in 1990 with a vision to bring the full benefits of computing power closer to the mobile worker. Back then, it was virtually impossible to take a fully functioning workstation anywhere outside the office. Even today's notebook computers do not fit into the tight spaces and environments in which many workers operate. Xybernaut products are an eloquent convergence of technology devices that integrate seamlessly and comfortably into traditional work situations and processes. They can yield unparalleled benefits - improved focus and workflow, better teamwork and significantly enhanced productivity. Xybernaut and it's best-of-breed collaborators continue to realize a new class of products that are ultra mobile, fully integrated, easy to use, comfortable to wear, powerful, compatible and robust.

See Mark Bayliss and Joel Coulter discuss “ The Cyborgization Of Humans And What This Means For Our Lives In The Future And Today" July 15, 2004, 6:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m., at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Chevy Chase Pavilion, Friendship Heights, Washington, D. New Zealand Health Science Company and German University to set Manuka honey standards in wake of compound discovery

New Zealand Health Science Company and German University to set Manuka honey standards in wake of compound discovery

A New Zealand honey health science company and a German university have joined forces in a bid to set industry standards for the use of manuka honey products to heal wounds, overcome stomach and skin problems, and potentially in the fight against cancer.

Te Awamutu, New Zealand (PRWEB) July 6, 2007

A New Zealand honey health science company and a German university have joined forces in a bid to set industry standards for the use of manuka honey products to heal wounds, overcome stomach and skin problems, and potentially in the fight against cancer.

The move comes in the wake of the discovery by the university's researchers of the compound responsible for manuka honey's anti-bacterial activity.

Te Awamutu-based Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd and the Technical University of Dresden, Germany have formed a partnership to establish a process to certify levels of the compound in manuka honey.

Announcing the partnership today, Manuka Health chief executive Kerry Paul said the university's Institute of Food Chemistry was the first to identify the compound methylglyoxal (MGO) and prove its high levels in some New Zealand manuka honeys.

Mr Paul said the discovery that honey's anti-bacterial ability was directly related to MGO levels, was highly significant for the industry.

"We have known for some time that manuka honey has this property. The term Unique Manuka Factor is used to describe this honey's consistently reliable anti-bacterial effect and UMF has been trademarked by the Active Manuka Honey Association.

"But we haven't known until the German discovery what the compound is that is responsible.

"The next step is to put a standards process in place with the industry which independently certifies MGO levels in honey-based health products," he said.

Mr Paul said manuka honey was already well known for its reliable anti-bacterial activity, making it highly effective for overcoming gastro-intestinal and skin health problems and improving wound healing.

However, with the identification of MGO, further applications for manuka honey were possible, including use as a potential tumorcidal agent to fight cancer.

A research team led by Professor Thomas Henle, head of the Institute of Food Chemistry at Dresden, tested more than 80 honeys from around the world and found MGO levels as high as 700 mg/kg in some New Zealand manuka honeys, more than 70 times higher than ordinary honey. Previous research had shown the highest concentrations in any food or drink were about 100 mg/kg in cocoa and coffee.

Mr Paul said during their research, Professor Henle's team had developed assays for measuring MGO in honey.

Mr Paul said medical researchers had found MGO had the potential to act specifically against malignant cells in the body and has a significant curative effect on a wide range of cancers in animals.

Current research on humans shows MGO results in complete remission in about 40% of malignancies, with partial remission in another 40%. Further studies are underway to improve treatment techniques.

A Japanese cancer researcher at a German university hospital earlier this month announced the results of a study showing Manuka Health's Bio30 Propolis extract suppressed NF1 neurofibromatosis, a type of tumour affecting one in 3,000 people.

About Professor Henle:
Professor Dr Thomas Henle, Ph. D., Head of the Institute of Food Chemistry, is a world-leading chemist in understanding how carbohydrates in food change in response to certain conditions. He has published more than 80 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals since 1991.

Grow-It-Yourself Shiitake Log Tops Mushroom Lovers' Christmas List

Grow-It-Yourself Shiitake Log Tops Mushroom Lovers' Christmas List

Shiitakes are definitely a preferred 'shroom among mycophiles. The second-best selling mushroom in the world, they're one of the world's best tasting, most versatile varieties. Shiitake mushroom logs are a unique, entertaining and healthful gift for people who love good food.

Perkins, OK (PRWEB) November 22, 2006

Shiitakes are definitely a preferred 'shroom among mycophiles. The second-best selling mushroom in the world, they're one of the world's best-tasting, most versatile varieties. In order to have shiitakes at their freshest, mushroom aficionados can now grow the queen of gourmet mushrooms at home with their own shiitake mushroom logs. Grown either indoors like houseplants or outside in a shady area of the yard, all that's needed is to add water.

"Most mushroom lovers have never tasted the true flavor and texture of the shiitake," according to shiitake farmer Doug Williams of Lost Creek

Mushroom Farm, (www. shiitakemushroomlog. com.) "Shiitakes purchased from the grocery store are grown in sterilized sawdust -- a world apart from shiitakes grown in their natural habitat, on hardwood branches and trees. And, when grown at home, the mushrooms can be harvested at their peak, ready to go straight from the log to the kitchen."

In addition to their superior flavor, many people prefer the freshest specimens possible to maximize the mushrooms' health benefits. Research has suggested the gourmet mushrooms may enhance our immune systems, fight infections and even offer protection against high cholesterol, heart disease and certain cancers. They're also packed with antioxidants, which act to repel free radicals.

At Lost Creek Mushroom Farm, logs are cut in the winter when the sap is down. The first step is to drill holes and inject shiitake spawn into the holes, then seal the holes with hot wax. After about a year, the shiitake grows inside the log until it's ready to break through the bark as mushrooms. To get the mushrooms to pop out, Williams said, "you 'shock' the log by soaking it in ice water for 24 hours. The log thinks it's the spring or fall rainy season and 'fruits'."

Lost Creek Mushroom Farm log kits will produce shiitakes every two months for four years or more, with increasingly larger yields as the log matures. "It's a gift that really does keep on giving," Williams said.

All kits include a log that's ready to fruit, instructions and recipes. Logs are guaranteed to produce. The original kits come with their own trays for soaking, "fruiting" and harvesting, in a 14-inch size for $38.50 and large 20-inch log for $48.50. Lost Creek has a 10" log for $27.50 and the Ma and Pa kit with two inch logs for a harvest every month for $47.50. Prices include shipping and handling.

More kits are available online at www. shiitakemushroomlog. com. To order by phone or to obtain a free brochure, call 1-800-792-0053.

National Procrastination Week: Stop Procrastinating with Your Retirement Planning

National Procrastination Week: Stop Procrastinating with Your Retirement Planning

Baby-boomer pre-retirees may have made arrangements for their financial well-being after retirement, but have left the other aspects of retirement to chance, writing a prescription for disaster.

(PRWEB) March 17, 2005

Putting things off, like planning for your retirement, is a situation that plagues many Baby Boomers. The whole notion of planning for retirement seems too overwhelming-- they don't know where to begin, they hope that it'll take care of itself if they just ignore it -- there are lots of reasons for procrastinating about retirement. Overcoming procrastination is less about developing will power and more about creating an environment that is conducive to completing the task at hand. How can Baby Boomers, during National Procrastination Week in March, curb their tendency to procrastinate about this issue?

Here are seven simple steps you can follow to move you from procrastinating about your retirement planning to revolutionizing your retirement:

1. Move from focusing only on the tangible financial aspects of retirement and start focusing on the other, less tangible, "must haves" for a successful retirement. While taking charge of your life, having dreams for the future, and a purpose that pulls you out of bed in the morning are not as quantifiable as, say, $1.3 million in assets, they are just as crucial.

2. Don't delude yourself into thinking you have to keep doing what you're doing just because you don't have enough money. Jump out of that narrow box you're in. Be bold. Think big. There are lots of great ways to supplement your retirement income (i. e. seasonal employment) and/or create new revenue streams beyond your wildest imagination (i. e. packaging what you already know and selling it). Not feeling especially bold? Then answer the question: "What's enough?" and you just may find you can retire on a lot less and enjoy life a lot more.

For inspiration, get a copy of the free Retirement Re-Tool Kit: 101+ Online Resources to Help You Design a Revolutionary Retirement. Download it at

Http://www. revolutionizeretirement. com/revolutionize. htm (http://www. revolutionizeretirement. com/revolutionize. htm).

3. Figure out what would be the most fulfilling and invigorating for you, follow your heart's desire, and pursue your goals with gusto. Write that book, start a business, get behind a cause, or (fill in the blank.) You owe it to yourself to take the time in your retirement planning to discover a clearly defined purpose - one that enriches your world and puts a great big smile on your face.

4. Instead of designing a life of only leisure, design a leisurely lifestyle that not only rejuvenates your spirit, but fills your life with meaning.

5. Find out what your partner expects from retirement long before you retire. And while you're at it, make a commitment to the health and growth of your relationship, now, before you retire. It's impossible to have a happy retirement if you're in a dismal relationship.

6. Seize the opportunity to grow and stretch into the best possible you during this third stage of your life. By moving away from the materialistic "What am I", of your pre-retirement life and moving toward the more spiritual "Who am I", you'll be traveling on the path of a rejuvenating and revitalizing retirement.

7. What's important in this phase of your life is that you harness your amazing wisdom, resources, creativity, brilliance and ingenuity to impact your small corner of the planet. Dare to dream. You may not be able to end world hunger, but you could end hunger on your block or in your community. And, if you happen to stumble upon a way to end world hunger in the process, more power to you. What are you waiting for?

930 saxophones put Toronto in the Guinness book!!!

The Shuffle Demons in partnership with T. R.U. (Tobacco Reality Underground) gathered saxophonists from across the country to break the World Record for the most saxophones playing a single song together at Dundas Square last Sunday.

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) June 6, 2004 -

– A sea of saxophones proved to be a roaring success for an historic world record-breaking attempt. Over 930 saxophones smashed the previous record of 545 held in England by playing the "Hockey Night in Canada" theme for five minutes putting Toronto into the Guinness Book of World Records. The massive crowd showed their support by cheering on the Calgary Flames in their attempt at the Stanley Cup.

The event also included a free concert with performances from Madrid, The Rude Mechanicals, The Sky Jumpers and headlining hosts The Shuffle Demons. Special guest speakers included Dr. Peter Selby, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Olivia Chow, City Councillor, Ward 14 Trinity/Spadina, TorontoÂ’s Children and Youth Advocate and The Honorable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of State, Public Health.

The Shuffle Demons along with all of our guests added their generous support to T. R.U. to promote a smoke-free lifestyle to youth and the people of Toronto. In support of a smoke-free Toronto, this was "the greatest feat of lung power of our time" and the largest World No Tobacco Day event in Canada, and an amazing way for Tobacco Reality Underground (T. R.U.) to emerge.

We would like to thank our sponsors, Health Canada, Jazz FM91, The City of Toronto, Long & McQuade, Torpedo Creative Group and the media that came out to support this event.

Underground Hip Hop With a Social Conscience - "Underground Hip Hop Artist faces a Diagnosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy"

Underground Hip Hop With a Social Conscience - "Underground Hip Hop Artist faces a Diagnosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy"

Underground hip hop artist, record producer and songwriter, Jair Dynast, former student-athlete at South Plains College, now has a new CD release, Curriculum Vitae.

NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) October 13, 2004

Of interest to editors and journalists covering: underground hip hop, student-athletes, special interest stories, sudden death in student-athletes, undiagnosed conditions in youth, cardiovascular diseases in youth, unusual diseases and health issues impacting youth.

Underground Hip Hop music producer, artist and songwriter, Jair Dynast a. k.a. Keir switched gears after he was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and could no longer play basketball as a student-athlete at South Plains College in west Texas.

As a basketball player, Jair Dynast had spent years honing his skills and working to earn a scholarship to pursue studies in engineering. Not getting support from his high school coach, he became his own recruiter/coach. He showcased his skills at basketball camps across the U. S. ranking in the top 60 and up and attended Prep School at Milford Academy, CT. He achieved his goal - he got the illusive scholarship.

Only weeks into his athletic scholarship, he's running a mile for time and suddenly he cannot breathe. As the events unfold, he cannot understand what's happening - he has worked so hard, overcome so many obstacles to get here. Who is trying to play God and turn his life upside down? He left Texas for Toronto with a canvas bag from Methodist Hospital (Lubbock) filled with asthma drugs, EKGs and chest x-rays in search of a concrete answer to his many questions. He wondered what would happen to him now. Who would pay for his university education? Would he even have the drive or the courage to be an engineer now? Is this divine intervention? How will he cope with this "no look pass" - after all, he's a basketball point guard? Jair is determined to make an impact by using underground Hip Hop to tell his very personal story to coaches and athletes everywhere. Athletes with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy usually drop dead suddenly - he was spared that fate for a reason and he is determined to find it.

Through underground Hip Hop and his single, "Struggle", Jair narrates his story and seeks to expose it to a larger audience. He wants to use Hip Hop to be the "voice crying out in the wilderness".

Jair is set to release a new rap CD, “Curriculum Vitae” featuring the introspective "Struggle", written, composed and produced by him on December 7, 2004 at Kim's Mondo in New York, Tower Records, Virgin Mega Stores and many more fine retailers worldwide. Currently #7 on the “All Time Best Production” list in Hip Hop at GarageBand. com, this song tells the story of a born fighter who is willing to go up against the odds to achieve success. "Niggaz like, "wake up dawg that's all a dream"/I looked the Devil in the face and called his fire steam" spits Jair as he describes his days struggling to hone his skills and be a standout high school basketball player. This led him to attain the athletic scholarship to play at South Plains, a Nationally Ranked Division I Junior College in Texas.

Jair's lyrical imagery engulfs and at the same time, carries one along with him to his current spot as one of the undergroundÂ’s elite up and coming recording artists - he weaves his deep baritone effortlessly through his mastery of production to let you into his world. And in his world, filled with nay Sayers, drugs and violence, he stands supreme even when dealt the ultimate, crushing blow - Jair learns he has to give up his scholarship due to an unforeseen heart ailment. "Here comes the real stress, no more Scholarship/Heart Ailment put it to rest lucky I ain't follow it". When asked why he chose to write the song Jair says, "As with all my music, it was just something I had to get off my chest. A story I had to tell. Anyone listening who has that dream or aspires for greatness can take something positive from the song because I'm still here. I'm still struggling to achieve - no matter what the obstacle, success is attainable".

Doggone Good: LoveMyPets Glow-in-the-Dark Pet Safety Collar Thwarts Pet-Human Fall Injuries

Doggone Good: LoveMyPets Glow-in-the-Dark Pet Safety Collar Thwarts Pet-Human Fall Injuries

People trip over their cats and dogs in the middle of the night. The ingenious, simple and affordable solution to preventing falls is the new line of nighttime safety products from LoveMyPets featuring a one-of-a-kind, non-invasive, glow-in-the-dark safety collar designed to reduce pet-related human falls and protect pets from darkness-related accidents.

Louisville, KY (PRWEB) April 19, 2009

According to a recent study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 86,000 Americans were treated in a medical emergency facility last year for injuries sustained during falls caused by cats or dogs inside or in the immediate environment outside the home.

LoveMyPets safety collar, harness and leash presents a high-quality-glow-in-the-dark material that is non toxic and non radioactive, reports LoveMyPets managing member Mike Macatee. The glow pigments last more than 12 hours, then recharge in the daylight, so no bulbs or batteries are needed. The collar is expertly engineered with one of the highest reflective values on the market. The polyester webbing contains superior UV-resistance and stretches less than nylon. When wet, the collar also dries fast and maintains a consistent fit for your pet's comfort. A welded D-ring adds strength on the leash clip and acetal hardware keeps the product light and strong. All collars, harnesses and leashes are fray and fade-resistant that wash well, wear well and don't fade out, adds Macatee.

Education, Macatee emphasizes, is key in getting word out on the importance of pet safety products. Stressing health and safety can help reinforce bonds between owners and pets. "Dog owners are very dedicated to their dogs but quite often just do not know how quickly something can happen that can endanger the lives of their dogs," he says. "We quite often tell dog owners, our product could be the best purchase decision you have ever made. In this day and age, protecting your pet should be a requirement for good dog ownership."

In addition to helping thwart pet-human falls and darkness-related accidents (more than the 1.2 million dogs are killed on U. S. roads every year), the LoveMyPets pet safety collar is unmatched during emergency situations such as hurricanes, earthquakes or other disasters where power and light is compromised.

Dog and cat ownership is increasing in the United States in concert with a rising population of older persons, in whom injuries might have the greatest health consequences.

Although fall injuries in the CDC study were cited most frequently among people under 14 years or between 35 and 54 years, injury rates, especially fracture rates, were most common among people older than 75.

The number of falls and the severity of injury resulting from falls increases as people get older. The most common serious injuries are head injuries, wrist fractures, spine fractures, and hip fractures. Because hip fractures can increase mortality and lead to long-term functional impairments for older adults, this is an area of growing concern.

The cost of falls among older people is enormous because of the high death toll, disabling conditions and recovery in hospitals and rehabilitation institutions. The United States spends an estimated $20.2 billion annually for the treatment of injuries to older people after falls. The majority of the cost is for hip fracture care, which averages $35,000 per patient, reports the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons.

The safety collar is currently available for only dogs, but within 90 days, LoveMyPets plans to offer a product small enough and lightweight enough to accommodate both smaller dogs and cats. A breakaway collar with an optional bell will also be available for cats.

Amidst one of the worst economic downturns in decades, the pet industry continues to show resilience.

The American Pet Products Association's annual release of comprehensive industry information shows total pet pending in 2008 topping $43 billion, with no declines in any category from 2007. That's more than the gross domestic product of all but 64 countries in the world and almost double the amount shelled out on pets just a decade ago. And, where most retail sectors are struggling to simply stay afloat, the pet industry is one of the fastest-growing with projected 4.9% increase in spending to $45.4 billion in 2009.

Due to consumers considering pets as part of the family, the gap in quality between two-legged and four-legged mammals is quickly disappearing in all categories from food and clothing to health care and services. These higher quality products and services and a strong consumer focus on their pet's well-being make health and wellness the most powerful trend in 2009 across the entire pet industry.

LoveMyPets glow-in-the-dark line of nighttime safety products are available at www. lovemypetsgps. com or at local pet stores. Suggested retail price for the collar is $19.95 with an optional 5-foot matching leash for nighttime walks at $19.95.
