Mushrooms in Ghana: They Heard, ' Where Mushrooms Grow in Africa, There Is No More Hunger' and Volunteered for Farmer-to-Farmer Program

Mushrooms in Ghana: They Heard, ' Where Mushrooms Grow in Africa, There Is No More Hunger' and Volunteered for Farmer-to-Farmer Program

Shiitake mushroom farmers Sandra and Doug Williams of Lost Creek Mushroom Farm travel to Ghana, West Africa, to work with oyster mushroom growers. The Williams' meet Bernard Bempah, director of Bemcom Youth Enterprises/Association (BYEA), who trains over 500 oyster mushroom farmers a year. Because of problems with the oyster mushrooms, Bempah intends to introduce shiitakes to Ghanian farmers and to the protein-hungry Ghanian diet. The Williams' want to bring Bempah to the US to study commercial shiitake production.

Perkins, OK (PRWEB) December 11, 2007

Doug and Sandra (pronounced Sondra) Williams of Lost Creek Mushroom Farm (www. shiitakemushroomlog. com), went to Africa as mushroom experts. Growing shiitake mushrooms on logs since the mid-1980s, and then producing grow-your-own mushroom log kits, shiitakes have taken them from farmers' markets to the Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer program, where their fungus savvy is helping people grow oyster mushrooms, shiitakes, reishi and straw mushrooms in Ghana, West Africa.

The Williams', both in their 60s, had two assignments, one at Jerusalem Farms, located close to Cape Coast, and the other with an alternative agricultural training center, Bemcom Youth Enterprises Association (BYEA) in Techiman, where they built an ongoing relationship with Bernard Bempah, the founder and Director of BYEA. They want to bring Bempah to the US to study commercial shiitake production.

Bempah intends to introduce shiitake log production to Ghanian mushroom farmers and shiitake mushrooms to the Ghanian diet. He said in an e-mail last week to Lost Creek Mushroom Farm, "If we can get support for my trip, it will change the mushroom industry in Ghana."

Bempah, who has had extensive training in oyster mushrooms and basic training in shiitakes, teaches oyster mushroom production to over 500 farmers a year, primarily women. Oyster mushrooms contain 10-30 percent protein, but they are more expensive to grow than shiitakes and have a shelf life of only 3-5 days compared with two weeks for shiitakes. The oyster mushroom process is more susceptible to contamination and many of the 5,000-7,000 growers throughout Ghana are unable to meet the demand.

Doug Williams says, ''In the last ten years Bernard has created a successful program with very limited resources and he's won national recognition for his commitment to training. The women's farms have been especially successful. I'd heard that oyster mushrooms could end malnutrition and hunger in Africa. But it's not turning out that way because of problems with oyster mushroom production. If farmers raised oysters and shiitakes together, it really could happen in Ghana.''

''We're asking for help from people who can contribute money and air miles,'' Sandra adds. A portion of Lost Creek Mushroom Farm's holiday gift log sales will go to support the project.

Help for Mushrooms in Ghana has already come from Frank Michael of The MushroomPeople at The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee. ''I sent e-mails from Ghana asking growers and suppliers for sources of warm-weather spawn to start Bempah's shiitake operation,'' she says. 'Frank donated it! Another Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer carried it to Ghana.'

Shiitake mushrooms (http://www. shiitakemushroomlog. com/facts&nutrition. html) are high in protein (second only to meat by volume), low in fat, contain all the essential amino acids and have significant health benefits. The mushrooms can improve general health because they strengthen the immune system and contain anti-viral compounds.

According to shiitake researcher Mark Phillips, "In Japan, a combination of shiitake and reishi mushroom concentrates is the official first line of treatment for cancer and AIDS. Shiitake consumption is high, and Japan has the lowest cancer rate and the highest cancer cure rate in the world.''

It takes a while for the idea of mushroom farming to catch on. ''At first, people pictured us in caves on our hands and knees, picking mushrooms from trays of composted manure,'' says Doug, a stone mason by trade, an artist by education, and an avid mushroom hunter. ''But shiitakes grow on oak logs under shade cloth, outside in shade, or indoors. Bernard is looking at teak. It's plentiful in Ghana and can resist the termites that took his first stand of logs.''

According to Sandra, ''The whole process is organic and ecologically sound. The logs are small-diameter timber that would otherwise be burned or used for low-grade construction materials.'' An Artist in Residence with a PhD in theatre, she has also has a technical writing business. She helped Bempah develop a BYEA business plan and identify marketing strategies.

There is a need not just for mushrooms, but for value-added products as well, meaning the mushrooms have at least one step of processing beyond the raw food. Sandra taught the farmers about drying mushrooms and told growers in Ghana about their experience with value-added products.

''We went from growing shiitakes for local restaurants and food stores to marketing shiitake mushroom log kits. 15 years ago Oklahoma just wasn't ready for exotic mushrooms, so we took that creative leap and started selling log kits on the Internet,'' Sandra says. ''That has made all the difference between bringing shiitakes only to Oklahomans and connecting with people all over the world through our mushrooms.''

Their presence on the web brought Lost Creek Mushroom Farm to the attention of OICI, Opportunities Industrialization Centers International. Its mission is to improve the lives of disadvantaged people through training and sustainable organizational development.

''OICI had been looking for small-scale, alternative agricultural entrepreneurs," Sandra says. 'Volunteeering to share our knowledge was something we'd been wanting to do.'

Volunteering to work with mushrooms in Ghana (http://www. travelpod. com/travel-blog-entries/shroomsinghana) was literally a dream come true for Sandra. ''30 years ago, I asked for a dream that would tell me something I would need to know for the rest of my life. The message that came was, 'Do things for delight and mastery rather than for terms and profit.' I have always wanted to help people have easier, better lives. I wasn't happy working the business only for money. My favorite parts of Lost Creek Mushroom Farm are talking with our customers, meeting other growers, and speaking about shiitakes and their impressive health benefits.

'A volunteer assignment teaching about mushroom production, marketing, packaging, processing, and value-added products was the perfect opportunity for me to do what I love. The best thing was meeting and working with Bernard Bempah. He is a man of integrity, hard working, a visionary who is deeply committed to moving forward with the BYEA motto, 'Freedom from poverty.'"

''We helped maybe 200 people in Ghana. If Bernard could come here and learn shiitake production, he could help many times that.''

For more of the story (http://shiitakemushroomlog. com/ghana. html) and more information go to www. shiitakemushroomlog. com. Join the 'Fruit for a Healthy You' Movement Today: Eat Fruit - Live Life

Join the 'Fruit for a Healthy You' Movement Today: Eat Fruit - Live Life

Join the "Fruit for a Healthy You" movement and support the American farmer. Simple fruit can help maintain healthy joints, support brain function, support healthy skin and support a healthy cardiovascular system.

Bellaire, MI (PRWEB) March 20, 2006

Eating healthy is fast becoming a way of life for many Americans. Studies show people are living longer and enjoying more active lifestyles. Consumers are increasingly interested in eating healthier without giving up great taste. It turns out that simple fruit may be the fountain of youth no matter what your age.

Research shows that fruit contains many natural health benefits. Due to advances in food technology, we are only just beginning to discover the many health secrets Mother Nature has placed in simple everyday fruit. In fact, in early 2005, the U. S.D. A. revealed the updated version of the food pyramid that increased their recommendation for fruit and vegetables to five to nine servings per day.

The Search for Eating Healthy

So why is fruit becoming the first choice for those wanting to enjoy a more active lifestyle? Fruit is a great-tasting, antioxidant-rich food that can help maintain healthy joints, help support brain function, assist in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system and even provide nutrients for healthy skin. All of these health benefits and more are available in the multiple colors, sizes, flavors and shapes of fruit.

About the “Fruit for a Healthy You” Movement

The “Fruit for a Healthy You” movement resonates with every sector of American society. The 76 million strong Baby Boom generation, our nation’s seniors, and business executives are jumping on the health wagon. Parent’s are encouraging their children to make healthier food choices in their busy schedules.

Jennifer LaPointe, owner of both Traverse Bay Farms and Fruit Advantage, is the driving force behind this up-and-coming movement to encourage people to eat more fruit and fruit-based products. Whether it’s a handful of dried blueberries, a fresh apple or a glass of cherry juice, LaPointe’s movement encourages daily consumption of fruit. Our mantra is “Eat Fruit…Live Life.”

The "Fruit for a Healthy You" movement even has an official seal. This seal serves as a reminder to eat more fruit on a daily basis. This grass root effort not only encourages a healthy lifestyle but also supports the American farmer. Spreading the word about the natural health benefits of fruit results in a stronger farming economy and a healthier nation.

At the core of the movement is the education of the public about the amazing healthy benefits packed into everyday fruit. To spread the word, LaPointe created the Orchard of Health (www. orchardofhealth. com). This website is an information-only site and is the first to compile fruit research from several sources into one simple location. Her website also contains numerous, great-tasting fruit recipes.

To join the movement, visit the Fruit Advantage website at www. fruitadvantage. com and look for the official "Fruit for a Healthy You" seal to learn more.

Jetti Katz Lab Licenses Test Panels for Autism, ADD and ADHD

Jetti Katz Lab Licenses Test Panels for Autism, ADD and ADHD

Jetti Katz Lab enters agreement with Look For Health LLC to license tests panels for gastrointestinal dysfunction in children with Pervasive Developmental Disorder.

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 6, 2005

Jetti Katz Labs (NY, NY) and LookForHealth announce a licensing agreement for the technology developed by Look For Health for its proprietary test panels for gastrointestinal dysfunction in children wih Pervasive Developmental Disorder including those with ADD, ADHD and Autism. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are more than excited to have a lab of such prestige and renown” come aboard to perform the stool testing” states Dr. Joan Fallon, CEO of Look For Health. “Jetti Katz lab and its medical director Dr. John Asher are well known in the GI community, and Dr. Asher’s presence in this project is an honor” further states Fallon.

Jetti Katz Lab best known for its tropical medicine work has an 80 year history of performing the very testing that is necessary to examine the gastrointestinal health of the children with PDD. Utilized by many fortune 500 companies, its director Dr. John Asher is a nationally recognized expert in the field of tropical medicine, and gastrointestinal health who regularly appears as a expert on TV and radio. His expertise is regularly sought by the medical community both nationally and internationally

LookForHealth’s proprietary and patented work has demonstrated that children with PDD including ADD, ADHD, and autism have gastrointestinal dysfunction. Questions regarding the gastrointestinal health of children with PDD and other conditions have been placed into question over the last few years. These test panels which include a screening panel and more definitive panels will allow the practitioner a unique window into the gastrointestinal health of the child.

Undigested protein and fat can potentially become allergens and cause substantial problems for the child. Further, these problems can create an environment where pathogens can begin to flourish and these test panels are designed to detect the antigenic presence of pathologic bacteria and viruses which can cause illness in the child.

“This agreement allows the child with autism, ADD and ADHD and others access to the finest laboratory in the US for detecting GI pathogens and functional changes in the gastrointestinal tract.” states Fallon "Dr. Asher’s expertise will no doubt be a value to the thousands of children with these disorders.

If a parent or physician are interested in learning more or ordering a testing panel further questions can be addressed by calling:

New Orleans, LA (Vocus) June 3, 2010

The first flight of students enrolled in Louisiana’s only Doctor of Nursing Practice program arrived at Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing on May 11.

The students attended their first classes in person, became familiar with the university’s systems and met the nationally-regarded integrated behavioral health consultant, Neftali Serrano, Psy. D. Onsite classes also included Ethics and Social Justice, led by Loyola President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S. J., Ph. D., and Philosophy of Science, taught by Cynthia Collins, Ph. D.

This inaugural group of 24, all of whom are women, represent diverse backgrounds:
71 percent represent minority or Hispanic heritage. 58 percent reside in Louisiana. The remaining students are from six other states. 92 percent indicate they intend to practice in underserved areas upon graduation. 50 percent indicated they would like to work as faculty members in a school of nursing. 90 percent or more will receive nurse traineeship scholarships to partially support tuition expenses.

School of Nursing Director Ann Cary Ph. D., M. P.H., R. N., A-CCC, said she is impressed with the class’ credentials and promise to the nursing profession.

“We have selected an outstanding cohort of practitioners seeking to obtain their DNP,” Cary said. “They have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to health care for the underserved, a passion to redesign systems of care and enthusiasm to bring new knowledge from the ‘bench to the bedside and to organizational effectiveness’ in their communities. We eagerly await their arrival and look forward to engaging the next generation of doctoral students in their leadership journey.”

The Loyola Doctor of Nursing Practice Program admits those who hold a master’s degree as a nurse practitioner with a focus in family/adult, women’s health, pediatric or gerontology. The program, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, will be delivered exclusively online. Within five years, Cary expects the program to grow to 125 students.

Since 1979, Loyola’s School of Nursing has been on the cutting edge of innovative programs in health care, keeping pace with dramatic changes in nursing education. It has graduated 1,200 registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees and more than 500 advanced nursing practice providers with master’s degrees.

New Program Helps Directors of Diversity Programs Avoid Burnout and Continue to Enhance Their Knowledge

New Program Helps Directors of Diversity Programs Avoid Burnout and Continue to Enhance Their Knowledge

Dallas-based firm, Diversity Trends, introduces new program, Diversity Executives Engaged. President, Tracy Brown, hosts conference call to answer questions about the program this Friday. http://www. DirectorofDiversity. com

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 17, 2005

Diversity Trends LLC, a Dallas based consulting firm, is hosting a 30-minute Question & Answer session this Friday at 2:15pm (CST)to answer questions about it's upcoming program for experienced professionals. Diversity Executives Engaged is a year-long program that includes teleseminars, coaching and group sessions.

According to the President of Diversity Trends, Tracy Brown, “We wanted to develop a resource that would help experienced diversity professionals avoid burnout and achieve their goals.”

Experienced diversity practitioners know all the basics, and everyone in their companies expect them to have all the answers. They don’t need a consultant to teach them how to set up a diversity program. This program is designed to provide them with a sounding board for their ideas, a network of colleagues to brainstorm with and a series of “just in time” learning resources they can use for their own development or to share with others.

Beginning in April, participants in the Diversity Executives Engaged program will be able to participate in a monthly conference call with others to discuss possible solutions to a real-life challenge faced by a member of the group. They will also have access to up to 30 hours of customized coaching on any aspect of their diversity strategy during the 12 months they are registered in the program. And as a group they will meet in person for two sessions designed around issues they identify as important.

Additional resources will be shared through a private website where participants in the program can access articles, models and other tools to help them, and their organizations, use diversity as a strategic advantage.

Participants in this program will save approximately 25% of the cost of the included services purchased individually.

For more information about this new program go to www. DirectorOfDiversity. com and click on “Diversity Executives.” You can also send an email to DEEP@DiversityTrends. com and a program summary will be sent to you immediately. Or contact Diversity Trends LLC (www. DiversityTrends. com) at 800.290.5631.

The Grammy Awards Go Green with Neil Young Painting by Eco-Artist McKenzie

The Grammy Awards Go Green with Neil Young Painting by Eco-Artist McKenzie

The Grammy Foundation MusicCares and famed eco-artist McKenzie have teamed up to raise over $27,500.00 for the foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala Silent Auction on January 29, 2010 in Los Angeles. McKenzie’s 100 percent eco-friendly, mixed-media painting of Neil Young, the MusiCares 2010 Person of the Year, marks the third year that the artist has participated in, and donated a work to the event.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 19, 2010

For the third year in a row, The Grammy Foundation MusiCares Awards (http://www. grammy. com/Musicares/ (http://www. grammy. com/Musicares/)) has asked Eco-Artist McKenzie (http://www. mckenzieartstudio. com (http://www. mckenzieartstudio. com)) to create a painting honoring the MusiCares Person of the Year for the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala Silent Auction on January 29, 2010 in Los Angeles. Appraised at $27,500.00, Artist McKenzie’s mixed-media painting of music legend and honoree Neil Young (http://www. neilyoung. com (http://www. neilyoung. com)) is entirely eco-friendly. Including this year and last year’s Neil Diamond painting, Artist McKenzie has donated over $35,000.00 to the Grammy Foundation.

The 40" x 50" painting also marks the 20th anniversary of Artist McKenzie’s donation of paintings to charity. Her "Art Making a Difference" program has generated thousands of dollars for charities and causes close to her heart, including but not limited to KIDS, Nashville’s Children’s Theater, Genesis Awards, Red Cross, AmberWatch Foundation and HSUS. As with all of Artist McKenzie’s paintings, this commemorative work is created using her proprietary technique coined, "Inku Art". She uses volatile organic compound (VOC)-free paints and pigments composed of non-toxic and water-based organic compound materials. Her paintings meet and exceed LEED-requirements in five different categories. The painting is on recycled canvas with reclaimed wood stretcher bars and re-purposed hanging hardware.

Additionally, this painting will be auctioned on a luxury T-shirt using all earth-friendly inks. This shirt serves as the initial piece to Artist McKenzie’s merge with soon-to-launch, edgy clothing company Dirt LA. Incorporating 100 percent eco inks and material from textile manufacturer Eagle Fabrics (http://www. eaglefabrics. com (http://www. eaglefabrics. com)), this new standard proves an unprecedented move in the fashion industry.

About Artist McKenzie
Artist McKenzie is the winner of the First Annual ARTV Fine Art Awards for "Best Mixed-Media Artist" in the world, which aired on Bravo Television. She is known as the "Hollywood Charity Artist" for her tireless efforts to raise awareness and funds for causes close to her heart using her Award-winning Art. Recently, she was diagnosed with a form of Lupus, UPUS thought by doctors to be triggered by environmental toxins from over 20+ years of painting; and the use of toxic chemicals in small, unventilated art studios and printing areas is thought, by her doctors, to have been the culprit. Artist McKenzie's exhaustive efforts to pioneer a green, healthy, organic alternative to traditional art production has resulted in "Inku Art". This is the first and only Hyper-Green Art method that meets LEED requirements and standards in five different categories and has contributed to LEED certification points. Hospice Nurse Speaks of the Beauty and Tragedy that is Calcutta

Hospice Nurse Speaks of the Beauty and Tragedy that is Calcutta

"In Mother Teresa’s House: A Hospice Nurse in the Slums of Calcutta" follows nurse Rosemary Dew’s journey of compassion as she recounts her experiences caring for the sick and dying among the poorest of Calcutta’s poor.

Woodbine, MD (PRWEB) August 6, 2006

"In Mother Teresa’s House: A Hospice Nurse in the Slums of Calcutta" follows nurse Rosemary Dew’s journey of compassion as she recounts her experiences caring for the sick and dying among the poorest of Calcutta’s poor.

Dew offers a first-hand account of the mysterious contradiction that is Calcutta, India -- open air markets full of beautiful colors, the smells of exotic foods and spices, the sights and sounds of a crush of humanity vying for space, and the devastation of poverty and illness.

A tragic yet touching story, "In Mother Teresa’s House" unfolds life and death struggles in the Missionaries of Charity’s House for Sick and Dying Destitutes in Calcutta, Mother Teresa’s first love. While the book is filled with seemingly hopeless cases of disease and misery from the city's most needy and often abandoned citizens, it also reveals the worth of the humble volunteers’ commitment. Throughout the story, Dew affirms that what people often need most is not always materialistic items but the compassion, understanding and dignity of others.

“The time I spent in the slums of Calcutta, in that ocean of chaos where nothing was as I expected, brought me a sense of fulfillment that I’d never dreamt possible.” -- Rosemary Dew

Broadlane’s Live Group Buy Saves Client More Than 30 Percent on Capital Equipment Purchase

Broadlane’s Live Group Buy Saves Client More Than 30 Percent on Capital Equipment Purchase

Broadlane’s Live Group Buy recently saved Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke, Alabama more than 30 percent on a new Computed Tomography (CT) scanner compared to best price quote they received.

Dallas, TX (Vocus) March 4, 2008

Broadlane’s Live Group Buy recently saved Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke, Alabama more than 30 percent on a new Computed Tomography (CT) scanner compared to best price quote they received.

Broadlane’s Live Group Buys are unique because they are conducted in-person as a client-driven process designed to help providers acquire the best technology at the best possible value.

Chief executive officer Timothy Harlin and chief financial officer Jeff Kirkpatrick of Randolph Medical Center faced the challenge of buying a new CT scanner. They needed to determine and acquire the best technology to meet the current and future needs of their community, while remaining fiscally responsible. They attended Broadlane’s Live Group Buy after hearing about it through peers.

“Of course, I had concerns about how successful the process would be, since there was a great deal of technical information that would have to be covered during the event, along with contract negotiations and financial analysis,” said Harlin. “It is natural to be a little skeptical when you hear about a new process that claims to have phenomenal results; however, we found the process to be completely customer-driven, vendor-neutral and extremely competitive. In addition, we had access to Broadlane and other clients’ valuable expertise and perspectives. We were also able to engage in the actual vendor negotiation which was a valuable experience.”

“The savings exceeded our expectations. We paid 30 percent less than what was offered through the best quote we obtained on our own. Not only did we get state-of-the-art technology, but savings of this magnitude allowed us to fund other needed capital equipment.”

Use the Power of Live Group Buy

The Broadlane Live Group Buy process is unique within the industry: “Live” means the group buy is conducted in person. Participants determine and weight the criteria used to evaluate the equipment and suppliers. Participants then rate supplier technology, identify key operational support components, participate in live negotiations and ultimately make a contract award.

Broadlane has invited ECRI Institute as an unbiased expert for two upcoming Live Group Buys: Computed Tomography (CT) Live Group Buy – March 26-28 and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Live Group Buy – May 28-30. ECRI Institute, an independent, nonprofit organization that researches the best approaches to improving patient care, will serve as an unbiased expert, offering equipment purchasing clients the inside track on the latest medical equipment.

Latest Generation VELscope Device Cleared for Sale in the U. S

Latest Generation VELscope Device Cleared for Sale in the U. S.

VELscope Vx System a Powerful Tool in the Fight Against Oral Disease and Oral Cancer

(PRWEB) November 24, 2010

LED Dental Inc. announced today that its VELscope Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment system has received 510(k) clearance from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is therefore now available for sale in the U. S. The VELscope Vx system’s updated optics technology, unique cordless design and affordable pricing make it easier than ever for dental practices to detect oral cancer and other forms of oral disease.

The first-generation VELscope device was introduced in 2006 and, since then, LED Dental has sold almost 6,000 devices, which have been used to conduct almost 10 million enhanced oral soft tissue exams worldwide. Oral soft tissue exams not only help detect all types of oral disease but are also a key element of an oral cancer screening protocol. Today, VELscope fluorescence visualization technology is used to conduct more enhanced oral exams than any other detection technology in the world.

“We are extremely excited about the potential of the VELscope Vx system to significantly increase the number of dental practices conducting comprehensive screenings for oral cancer and other forms of oral disease,” said Peter Whitehead, founder and CEO of LED Dental. “The device’s cordless portability makes it easy to transport between operatories within the dental practice, and its attractive pricing makes it possible for practices to charge very low exam fees to their patients.”

Oral cancer kills one American every hour of every day. According to the SEER database, oral cancer has a higher mortality rate than several better-publicized cancers, such as cervical cancer and testicular cancer. Some oral cancers are now known to be linked to exposure to the sexually-transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV), which means that anyone who is sexually active is potentially at risk for the disease. Because of this, many health experts advise everyone 18-years-old and older to get an oral cancer exam on at least an annual basis.

Regular exams can help address the fact that oral cancer is typically discovered in late stages, when the 5-year survival rate is around 30%. When discovered in early stages, however, the survival rate leaps to 80-to-90%, according to SEER data. Early detection can help reduce not only the mortality rate, but the degree of invasiveness and disfigurement resulting from treatment.
The VELscope Vx shines a safe, blue light into the oral cavity and excites natural tissue fluorescence. When viewed by the clinician through the Vx’s patented filters, abnormal tissue typically appears as an irregular, dark area that stands out against the otherwise normal, green fluorescence pattern of surrounding healthy tissue.

VELscope Vx exams can help dental practices detect not only oral cancer, but other more common types of oral disease, such as viral, bacterial or fungal infections. Exams take only a few minutes, and are completely free of any pain or inconvenience for patients. To learn more about the VELscope Vx, or to find dental practices that offer VELscope exams, visit http://www. velscope. com. For investor information, contact Paul Hughes at (877) 482-3032.

Vitamin Angel Alliance Reports Ongoing Donations Crucial for U. S. and Worldwide Disaster Relief– Rainbow Light and NPI Donate 3/4 Million Supplements in September

In the wake of destruction following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, there is mounting concern over malnutrition, infection and disease among the survivors. While donations have been pouring into Vitamin Angel Alliance’s hurricane relief warehouse in Texas to benefit affected areas, much more is immediately needed. Continued support over the next six months is critical to help protect survivors from serious or fatal health complications. And now with the earthquake destruction in Pakistan and India, continued support is urgently needed.

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF., (PRWEB) October 17, 2005

In the wake of destruction following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, there is mounting concern over malnutrition, infection and disease among the survivors. While donations have been pouring into Vitamin Angel Alliance’s hurricane relief warehouse in Texas to benefit affected areas, much more is immediately needed. Continued support over the next six months is critical to help protect survivors from serious or fatal health complications. And now with the earthquake destruction in Pakistan and India, continued support is urgently needed.

Since the Katrina disaster, Rainbow Light Nutritional Systems and its affiliated manufacturing company, Nature’s Products Inc. (NPI), have contributed 750,000 supplements to the relief efforts through Vitamin Angel Alliance. Together, Rainbow Light and NPI have donated children’s chewable multivitamins, adult multivitamins designed to help women, men and older persons meet their specific nutritional requirements, multi-mineral tablets and immune-enhancing supplements such as High Potency Micro-Clear™ and Deep Defense™ formulas. “We’re concerned that many hurricane survivors are not getting the basic vitamins and minerals they need to stave off malnutrition because of limited food supplies in the affected areas,” explains Rainbow Light President Linda Kahler. “A food-based supplement can bolster an inadequate diet, providing essential nutrients required to maintain good health, while building the body’s natural immune system defenses against opportunistic infection and disease.”

Rainbow Light and NPI take a prominent place among the many socially responsible companies in our industry who’ve given generously to this cause. “The response from the natural products industry has been outstanding,” reported Howard B. Schiffer, Vitamin Angel Alliance President. He continues, “This is going to be a long-term relief effort. We’re going to need 20 million supplements to get these people through the next 6 months.”

Vitamin Angel Alliance is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization dedicated to providing basic nutrition and fighting vitamin A deficiency childhood blindness and other vitamin deficiency diseases around the world. Last year Vitamin Angels donated 23.4 million supplements to people in need in 40 countries around the world. To make donations to Vitamin Angel Alliance visit their website at: www. VitaminAngel. org. For product donations, call 805-564 -8400.

New York Mesothelioma Attorneys File Lawsuit in Syracuse, NY After Rare Asbestos-Related Cancer Claims Third Family Member

New York Mesothelioma Attorneys File Lawsuit in Syracuse, NY After Rare Asbestos-Related Cancer Claims Third Family Member

Independent studies confirm at least 15 asbestos-related cancer deaths among New York State talc workers, according to attorney who filed the mesothelioma lawsuit.

Natural Bridge, NY (PRWEB) May 1, 2007

New York mesothelioma attorneys (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100) Levy, Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP filed a lawsuit today on behalf of the third family member from a Jefferson County, New York, hamlet to die from mesothelioma. "It's a statistical improbability for the rare asbestos-related cancer to occur in a town of less than 400 persons," according to attorney Robert I. Komitor, Esq., a partner in Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP.

Donald Lozo, who died in August 2005, at 67, was exposed to asbestos from talc, as was his
Late sister, Catherine, and late mother, Mary, who also died of asbestos-related cancer (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100). Donald Lozo worked for more than a decade at the Carbola Talc Mine, Natural Bridge, according to Court documents filed by his New York mesothelioma attorneys.

The Lozo mesothelioma lawsuit (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100) was filed today in New York State Supreme Court, Fifth Judicial District, Onondaga County, Syracuse, the Court in which the region's asbestos litigation is consolidated, according to Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP, New Jersey and New York mesothelioma attorneys with extensive experience handling asbestos exposure cases.

Mesothelioma is an extremely rare disease without hereditary basis, occurring in approximately only 1 out of 100,000 persons, even less frequently in women. Natural Bridge had a population of approximately 392 persons according to the 2000 Census and zero mesothelioma deaths would be expected. Yet, In the Lozo family there now have been three deaths from asbestos-related cancer. Additionally, published studies have independently confirmed a total of at least 15 mesothelioma deaths among talc workers in New York State, Lozo's mesothelioma attorney said.

The Lozo family's mesothelioma tragedy allegedly began in the 1930s when Alfred Lozo, husband of Mary and father of Donald and Catherine, began working at the Carbola Mine. For decades Albert Lozo would return from work at the mine with talc dust on his clothing and in the family car. Mary, Donald and Catherine were constantly exposed to this asbestos-laden talc dust, which also made its way into the Lozo residence when it was released from the talc operation into the air, according to Patrick J. Timmins, Esq., another one of the New York mesothelioma attorneys (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100) working on the Lozo's case.

"Talc mine workers had no reason to think that the mineral was dangerous. Catherine Lozo Gerber, who filed her own lawsuit after she developed mesothelioma, testified before her death in a deposition that her father sometimes took her to work - not knowing that he was exposing his daughter to cancer-causing dust," Timmins said. Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP also represents Catherine Lozo Gerber's estate in a separate mesothelioma lawsuit (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100) filed in Syracuse in 2005.

Donald Lozo, whose estate filed its case today, also was allegedly exposed to contaminated talc when he worked in the mill at Carbola Mine in the 1950s and early 1960s. He also was allegedly exposed to asbestos used in industrial products while working as a member of Iron Workers Union, Local 60 beginning in the mid 1960s. The Carbola Chemical Company is one of the entities believed to be responsible for mining and milling operations during the years in which Alfred and Donald Lozo worked at the Natural Bridge facility, Timmins said.

Lisa Gerber, Catherine Lozo Gerber's daughter, is executrix for Donald Lozo's and Catherine Lozo Gerber's estates, according to court documents filed by the New York mesothelioma attorneys.

For years scientists have noted the high rates of asbestos-related cancer (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100) in New York State talc mining counties. One 2002 study published by the British Occupational Hygiene Society found Jefferson County, in which Natural Bridge is located, with the second highest mesothelioma death rate for females in the U. S. and the sixth highest for males, according to Komitor.

Independent scientists and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health ("NIOSH") analyzed New York State talc in the 1970s and concluded that it was contaminated with asbestos. More recently, the New York State Department of Health again confirmed the presence of asbestos in the talc ore, Komitor said.

"This is a tragedy for the Lozo and Gerber families and for the Natural Bridge community. We know there are others who've lost loved ones because of asbestos from talc and from other sources and we are doing everything we can to obtain justice for Don, Catherine and their families," Timmins said.

Named defendants in Complaint seeking compensatory and punitive damages to the full extent permitted under the law include publicly and privately held entities in the talc and asbestos industries. Under Court rules, after the defendants are served the Hon. James W. McCarthy will establish a schedule for the mesothelioma lawsuit (http://www. lpklaw. com/showarticle. php? aid=100), to include dates for exchanging evidence, motions, and, the trial, Timmins said.

Tips for Better Mental Health in 2009

Tips for Better Mental Health in 2009

Buckeye Psychiatry, LLC (Dublin, Ohio), the psychiatric practice of Adam Brandemihl, M. D., Board Certified Psychiatrist, offers tips on how to improve your mental health in 2009. He discusses ten ways of making it easier to keep your New Year's resolution of better mental health.

Dublin, OH (PRWEB) January 5, 2009

Many clients have recently asked Dr. Brandemihl how they can achieve their New Year's resolution of improving their mental health in 2009. With the stress of a struggling economy and growing demands from their jobs and families it can be quite difficult. "There are several things you can do on a daily basis to find that balance, but self awareness and prioritizing are key," said Dr Brandemihl. "It's important to learn to recognize your stressful feelings and emotions, so you can quickly find effective ways of dealing with and preventing them."

Dr. Brandemihl said that, "Stress may often trigger anxiety. Anxious people may find themselves worrying excessively, not sleeping well, and feeling tense, on edge, distractible and irritable. Life stressors may also lead to symptoms of depression including sadness, crying spells, and lack of pleasure in life. Depression can sometimes trigger sleep and appetite disturbances as well as feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or even suicidal thoughts."

"There are several things you can do proactively to prevent depression and anxiety from developing or worsening," said Dr Brandemihl. "Some techniques are very easy to implement."

1. Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. Avoid naps longer than thirty minutes as they may disrupt your nighttime sleep.

2. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and get thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise three times a week through something as simple as walking. The malls can be a good place to walk on cold, winter days.

3. Journal or blog to have an outlet for your feelings or emotions. You can even throw the paper away when you're done writing if you are a private person. The important aspect is having an outlet for the feelings.

4. If you are unemployed (or even if you are not) find somewhere to volunteer between interviews and searching. This helps your self esteem and also helps to maintain some structure and purpose in your life.

5. Participate in religious or spiritual practices, preferably with others, to foster a sense of fellowship and hope.

6. Communicate to your family and friends that you are feeling "sad", "stressed" or "anxious" so they can reach out a helping hand. If family or friends are not around consider a support group either online or in person.

7. Refrain from drug and alcohol use as this can exacerbate or cause depression and anxiety. Also avoid excessive amounts of caffeine as it can contribute to anxiety.

8. Find a new hobby or interest that involves socialization to help foster new relationships.

9. Adopt a pet (only if you are able to care for it). Their unconditional love and daily needs provide reassurance and structure to your life.

10. Consult a mental health professional when in doubt! Meet with a psychiatrist and a therapist.

It has become more common and socially acceptable to utilize mental health services. Dr Brandemihl said, "No matter how hard some people try to stay positive and be proactive they still may feel depressed and anxious. These people may have a chemical imbalance that requires psychiatric medication, but only a physician, or preferably a board certified psychiatrist, can determine that."

Buckeye Psychiatry, LLC is located at 5060 Parkcenter Avenue, Suite F in Dublin, Ohio, just north of the Mall at Tuttle Crossing. Appointments may be made by calling 614-766-5205 and are generally available within 1-2 weeks. Additional information can be found on Buckeye Psychiatry's website at www. Car Accident Survivor Begins to Swim Her Way to Recovery

Car Accident Survivor Begins to Swim Her Way to Recovery

Aston, PA (PRWEB) September 28, 2005

On Friday, September 23, NBC kicked off its new series "Three Wishes" by helping an 11-year old girl, Abby Castleberry, recover from a life threatening car accident. In addition to assisting with her medical expenses, NBC installed an indoor Endless Pool, donated by Endless Pools, Inc., to aid in her quest to return to competitive gymnastics, swimming and soccer.

Once a healthy, athletic child, a car accident changed AbbyÂ’s life. During the accident, in which a truck broadsided her fatherÂ’s car with Abby in the passengerÂ’s seat, AbbyÂ’s head came in contact with the truckÂ’s bumper, leaving her with severe head trauma, numerous facials fractures, a broken pelvis, and a broken femur. In the months since the accident, Abby has undergone a number of surgeries, but many more loom in the near future. As she awaits the next round of surgeries, she must wear a helmet to protect her fractured skull.

When NBC asked what her wishes were, she said to help her parents pay for her medical expenses and to return to competitive athletics.

To help Abby rebuild her strength, NBC built her an exercise room complete with an Endless Pool. Measuring just 8'x15', the Endless Pool provides all the benefits of a full-size pool in a fraction of the space. It is compact enough to fit virtually anywhere, inside or out, making swimming year-round a possibility even in homes with limited space.

The Endless Pool has a smooth, adjustable, non-turbulent current, ideal for swimming, aquatic exercise and rehabilitation. The poolÂ’s unique features include specials steps, railings and jets, making it a great therapy tool.

Endless Pools, Inc., headquartered in Aston, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia, was founded in 1988 by James Murdock to manufacture and sell counter-current swimming pools for residential and commercial use. Over the last fifteen years, more than 8,000 Endless Pools have been sold and installed in the United States and 50 countries.

To learn more about the Endless Pool or order a free DVD, call (800) 233-0741 ext. 4506 or visit www. endlesspool. com/4506 (http://www. endlesspool. com/4506).
