How to Develop Defensible Yet Optimum Hospital Pricing

How to Develop Defensible Yet Optimum Hospital Pricing

Increased scrutiny of hospital prices by Federal agencies, patients and the public in general, at a time when hospital operating margins are weak, has provided great impetus for hospital financial managers to become more sophisticated in their approach to establishing prices. New methods must integrate payor contract information with market analysis and the actual cost of the CDM line item to ensure that prices are established at "Defensible yet Optimum" levels. How can optimal financial results be achieved in an era of ever diminishing financial resources and expanding regulatory complexities? Find out at this special audio conference “How to Develop Defensible Yet Optimum Hospital Pricing.” The program is scheduled for Thursday, November 10, 2005 at 1:30 - 3:00 p. m. ET.

There are more than 20 categories in which one can compete, and hundreds of institutions and agencies--including the largest ones in the world--do so each year.

Maxine Frere Receives Pocketbook Honors Award for Courageous Love, Life and Enduring Commitment

Maxine Frere Receives Pocketbook Honors Award for Courageous Love, Life and Enduring Commitment

Harlem HIV/AIDS activist Maxine Frere to receive The Pocketbook Honors in recognition of more than 20 years of service to children of the AIDS epidemic. This award ceremony is part of the on-stage production of The Pocketbook Monologues making its New York City premiere on June 28, 2008. Two amazing performances will be held featuring Kim Coles, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Jacque Reid, Toni Belafonte, Sheron Smith and creator Sharon K. McGhee.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 20, 2008

On her 61st birthday, HIV/AIDS activist Maxine Frere will receive The Pocketbook Honors in New York City. The award will be presented on June 28 in a ceremony following a special performance of The Pocketbook Monologues. This is the first year that the award will be given.

The Pocketbook Honors is bestowed to community leaders who have exhibited a commitment to promoting awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS, with an emphasis on African-American women's sexuality, intimacy and responsibility. Honorees may be recognized for program implementation, creativity in outreach methods, philosophy, mission longevity and/or systemic solutions or alliances.

"Maxine Frere has been a pillar of hope for children and families facing HIV/AIDS," says Sharon K. McGhee, creator of The Pocketbook Monologues. "Her tireless dedication to this cause is exemplary and it's our supreme delight to present her with The Pocketbook Honors this year."

A native of Harlem, New York, Maxine Frere worked as a stock girl and then a buyer's assistant for Lord & Taylor prior to pursuing a career as a registered professional nurse. Upon graduating from the Harlem Hospital School of Nursing, she touched the lives of countless children and in the mid 1980s began what would become a lifelong mission - caring for children infected by HIV/AIDS. Much of the earlier part of her career was spent helping families prepare for death. But now, due to medical advancements, awareness and other champions of hope like Frere, she's able to help children and families facing HIV/AIDS to prepare for life. Whether helping a family plan for college or standing beside one of her "kids" at their wedding, her commitment to education, health, resilience and hope resonates throughout her community.

Now at the age of 61, Maxine Frere's mission is as strong and vibrant as ever. She frequently talks to schools and churches offering much needed support, advice and encouragement to children and parents. She conducts educational programs on HIV/AIDS at her home church First A. M.E. Church: Bethel and has plans to pursue her Masters Degree in Health Education.

This year the Pocketbook Honors will be presented to Maxine Frere, Rev. J. Stanley Justice and Rev. Lynda Rassman in conjunction with the New York City premiere of The Pocketbook Monologues. The award winning cast of the on-stage production includes creator Sharon K. McGhee, Kim Coles, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Jacque Reid, and Harlem's own Coin Purse, Taylor Jenkins. This entertaining celebration will take place at the Helen Mills Theatre. Tickets are $35.00 for General Admission and $75.00 for VIP Seating, which also includes an autographed copy of The Pocketbook Monologues. 'Meet & Greet' Private Celebrity Reception tickets are also available. R. A.P. H.A. Foundation Inc., The Muse New York, and Magnificent Women Organization are supporters of this exciting event.

Air Pollution Shortens Lifespan by 10 Years

Air Pollution Shortens Lifespan by 10 Years

Air pollution is much more dangerous than previously thought; it kills up to 24,000 people each year in California alone and reduces lifespans by an average of 10 years. Air purifiers not only improve overall health and quality of life, but they also add years to your life.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 16, 2008

Air quality experts at achooallergy. com (http://achooallergy. com/) report that air purifiers improve much more than allergy and asthma symptoms.

"Air purifiers (http://www. achooallergy. com/airpurifiers. asp) improve overall health and quality of life," explains Scott Smith, director of communications at the allergy relief center. "Now we know that air pollution kills millions of people each year, and the pollutants that build up inside your home can damage your heart and take years off your life."

According to a new report from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), air pollution kills as many as 24,000 people each year in California alone, and regular exposure to air pollution shortens lifespans by an average of 10 years.

Rates of heart attacks, strokes, and other serious diseases increase exponentially after a slight increase in particulate pollution.

Most particulate air pollution comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Air pollution not only damages the lungs and contributes to respiratory disease, but it also damages the heart and cardiovascular system.

"Our report concludes these particles are 70% more dangerous than previously thought, based on several major studies that have occurred in the last five years," said Bart Croes, chief researcher for CARB.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that air pollution from smoke and various chemicals kills over three million people a year worldwide. Air pollution in China is so bad that several athletes have withdrawn from the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. On a typical day, pollution levels in Beijing are nearly five times WHO standards for safety.

A separate report from the European Environment Agency states that "the estimated annual loss of life due to air pollution is significantly greater than car accidents."

To make matters worse, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that indoor air is two to ten times more hazardous than outdoor air - and most Americans spend 90% of their time indoors. Indoor air quality is the number one environmental health problem in the United States, according to the EPA.

The EPA recommends improving ventilation and using air purifiers (http://www. achooallergy. com/airpurifiers. asp) to remove pollutants from indoor air. The EPA does not advise the use of air cleaners which emit ozone, a chemical that can irritate the lungs and trigger asthma attacks.

Dr. Kingsley Chin, an ENT physician in Atlanta, GA, recommends HEPA air purifiers. "That stands for high efficiency particulate air filter," explains Dr. Chin. "These filters will reduce pollutants in a typical room by more than 99%. That's very effective."

Dr. Chin encourages people to place HEPA air purifiers in their bedrooms, where they spend most of their time: "Typically a HEPA filter can exchange the air in one's bedroom about six times an hour, and that can make a very big difference in how one breathes in the bedroom. When you have a HEPA filter going, the bedroom door should be closed as well as the windows."

Visit achooallergy. com (http://achooallergy. com/) to learn more about indoor air quality and shop for a home air purifier (http://www. achooallergy. com/airpurifiers. asp).

Bon Ami, a Household Name in Earth-Friendly Cleaners, Celebrates 120th Anniversary, Joins Earth Share, a Nationwide Network of Environmental Organizations

Bon Ami, the earth-friendly household cleanser that generations of Americans have depended on for gentle and effective home cleaning, is celebrating its 120th anniversary by partnering with Earth Share, one of the leading advocates of environmental education in America.

Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) April 3, 2006 -–

Bon Ami, the earth-friendly household cleanser that generations of Americans have depended on for gentle and effective home cleaning, is celebrating its 120th anniversary by partnering with Earth Share, one of the leading advocates of environmental education in America.

Earth Share, a nationwide network of America's leading non-profit environmental and conservation organizations, works to promote environmental education and charitable giving through workplace giving campaigns.

“A clean environment should be everyone’s goal,” said David G. Beaham, President of Bon Ami Company. “You can be assured that Bon Ami is earth-friendly, the result of sticking to a philosophy that’s kept Bon Ami successful for 120 years. Bon Ami is committed to the environment, and is honored to join Earth Share and its members in reaffirming our commitment to being environmentally responsible.”

Environmentally sound cleaning tips can be found at www. bonami. com and www. earthshare. org.

The gentle, non-scratching cleaner, with the famous yellow and red label depicting a small chick emerging from an egg, has been a household name since its introduction in 1886. More famous than its trademark logo, though, is its reputation for being a versatile cleaning agent. Its many uses include cleaning and polishing hard surfaces in the home including countertops, sinks, stovetops, ceramic tile, stainless steel, cast iron cookware and even whitewall tires.

Bon Ami contains biodegradable detergent, making it a logical choice for partnership with Earth Share.

“Our product contains no chlorine, dye or perfume, which means Bon Ami is less likely to harm the environment during and after use,” said Beaham. “As a result, Bon Ami is recommended by many groups and organizations that promote non-toxic alternatives to some of todays most commonly used household products.”

Bon Ami, owned by Kansas City’s Faultless/Bon Ami Company, is available in grocery stores, mass merchandise stores, hardware stores, health food stores and mail order stores. More information on Bon Ami and its history is available at www. bonami. com.

Breast Augmentation Surgery & Breast Reduction Surgery...Medically Necessary Or Not?

Breast Augmentation Surgery & Breast Reduction Surgery...Medically Necessary Or Not?

Independent Review Organizations (IROs) Decide These Important Questions For Payers And Providers.

(PRWEB) June 18, 2005

Traditionally, breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) and breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) surgeries are defined by health insurers as cosmetic. ItÂ’s a definition that often puts patients at odds with health insurers. Payers have difficulty deciding if breast enhancement or breast reduction cases are medically necessary.

For example, a doctor prescribes a breast reduction for Andrea, a five-foot one-inch, 135 pound, 32-year-old female. Her plastic surgeon recommends removing 500 grams of breast tissue from each breast. Is this breast reduction surgery considered medically necessary and something that is covered under her medical insurance plan?

According to Dr. Skip Freedman, medical director at AllMed Healthcare Management, a leading Independent Review Organization (IRO), Andrea should qualify for the breast reduction treatment because of the following reasons:

For several years, she has complained of shoulder, back and neck pain, bra strap grooving and intertrigo (eczema). She wears a 34DD bra and attributes these symptoms to her breasts. SheÂ’s worn support bras, taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and has had years of chiropractic treatments without alleviating her symptoms. She has symptoms consistent with macromastia (excessively large breasts) Her doctor notes that her complaints are typical for a macromastia diagnosis.

To read Dr. Freedman's article, please click on the following link: http://www. allmedmd. com/company/download/cm_breast. htm? prweb (http://www. allmedmd. com/company/download/cm_breast. htm? prweb)

According to the American Medical Association (AMA), when reconstructive surgery, such as breast augmentation or reduction, is performed on an abnormal structure of the body caused by disease, infection, congenital deformity, trauma or tumors, the reconstructive surgery is considered medically necessary and generally done to improve the bodyÂ’s function.

Breast surgery, rather than conservative treatment or weight loss, provides the best chance for AndreaÂ’s relief. Additionally, patients, like Andrea, who have congenital breast deformity or who have experienced breast trauma, infection, tumors or disease, may also qualify for breast augmentation or reduction when itÂ’s considered reconstructive. These patients might have PolandÂ’s Disease or cancer, breast drooping caused by dramatic weight loss due to gastric surgery, significant breast asymmetry, or have had a mastectomy.

When unsure, the AMA is encouraging third-party payers to refer to such definitions in determining what services are eligible for coverage under the plans they offer or administer, as well as leverage the expertise of Independent Review Organizations for any questionable cases. Independent Review Organizations offer a deep panel of experts that understand the definitions of cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery and can help payers ensure patient treatments are medically necessary. Independent Review Organizations can also help doctors confirm their diagnosis by reviewing clear documentation and the high-resolution photographs of the breast area and any other areas affected.

To read Dr. Freedman's article, please click on the following link: http://www. allmedmd. com/company/download/cm_breast. htm? prweb (http://www. allmedmd. com/company/download/cm_breast. htm? prweb)

For more information on making informed decisions on whether breast enlargement or breast reduction is medically necessary, visit AllMedÂ’s web site at http://www. allmedmd. com (http://www. allmedmd. com).

Health Attitudes Survey Reveals Diabetes Diagnosis Can Have Hidden Benefits

Health Attitudes Survey Reveals Diabetes Diagnosis Can Have Hidden Benefits

Increased awareness of lifestyle choices benefits newly diagnosed diabetics--particularly among women.

Carlsbad, CA (PRWEB) April 28, 2005

morefocus group, a leading on-line research panel manager and publisher, today announced interim results of its latest survey in the Healthcare Attitudes series. Conducted by the Group's NCERx healthcare division, the initial diabetes survey is part of a 2 year, disease-specific, longitudinal study covering 70 separate conditions and involving over 1.5 million panelists.

The most recent diabetes survey looked specifically at patient attitudes to treatment and was designed for interview follow-up to research treatment compliance. Although, as expected, compliance is high among the diabetic population, several interesting results emerged. "Most people would agree that diagnosis with diabetes is life changing," said Dr. Regan Carey, the morefocus Study Director. "However, what may not be so obvious is that the life changes are not all bad. The vast majority of the 2,000 panelists (82%), reported that they now take a much greater interest in their overall health, while a surprising 63% report that they actually appreciate life more since diagnosis."

Richard Scuderi MD PhD, NCERx Medical Director, commented, "Clearly one would expect an increased appreciation of lifestyle choices, however detailed interviews with selected respondents confirm that the 'appreciation of life' question applied to a far more complex mix of motivators than simply the health aspects."

Women were twice as likely to make the lifestyle change as men, with a strong split emerging between the attitudes of the young and the old. While 90% of those over 65+ reported taking better care of themselves, only 54% of those of less than 18 years of age reported the same. In a parallel study of non-diabetic's attitudes, overall, 59% of those with a diabetic relative reported changing their personal lifestyle choices since their relative's diagnosis. Again, women were significantly more likely (73%), to make permanent life changes.

"We are very encouraged by the response to the Healthcare Attitudes series," commented Colin Lucas-Mudd, morefocus group CEO, "The data have significant value in driving the design of our compliance and persistency programs. With less than 17% of patients continuing medication as directed across all conditions after three months, increasing compliance and persistency is a critical component in lowering healthcare costs and improving patient care. As the results of each survey wave are compiled, the importance of patient dialog rather than unidirectional promotion is increasingly evident. Clearly, pharmaceutical manufacturers and providers need to take note and adjust their approach more rapidly than is the current trend."

The diabetes survey results and information on the Healthcare Attitudes study are available on request from morefocus at 1.800.549.3904. The on-going survey is available at the Group's diabetes website, diabetes-and-diabetics. com (http://www. diabetes-and-diabetics. com/). In early May, the Group's clinical trial publication CTResearch. com (http://www. ctresearch. com/) will be hosting a survey to compare changing patient attitudes to Rx marketing and clinical research approaches.

A SurvivorÂ’s Story: Strategies for Coping with Death, Diseases, and Disability

A SurvivorÂ’s Story: Strategies for Coping with Death, Diseases, and Disability

A survivor of multiple illnesses tells how to cope emotionally

(PRWEB) January 24, 2003

Ron Gold is a survivor: a type II diabetic suffering kidney failure and on dialysis three times a week, who went blind and then re-gained his sight with sophisticated surgery, who died twice from heart problems, was resuscitated, and later had quintuple bypass open-heart surgery. He knows about health problems and how to face them.

Late in 2002, he was again hit with another life-threatening operation. From it flowed his non-book “Walk On, Walk On”. “As you roll onto a hospital gurney”, writes Gold “and begin your ride to the Operating Room, you can choose to view the experience in one of three ways: One—you can be content to watch the ceiling move. Two—you can contemplate things that can go wrong and kill you. Yes, you can die. And three—you can visualize your gurney ride as your return to good health. I always choose the third. I convince myself that I’m riding forward to recovery. I ride with hope in my heart.”

Gold pours forth his optimism, his philosophy on surviving in the face of death. He lists his beliefs, his coping mechanisms that have seen him through. Gold writes from his heart and shares his experiences by giving public readings of his many works to civic and church groups. His stories range from inspirational to humour, from love stories to sports stories and can be found at www. Non-Books. com/Category-Gold_Stories. html (http://www. Non-Books. com/Category-Gold_Stories. html). He has compiled 12 of his stories in his newly-published book Let Me Touch Your Spirit. A writer for more than 30 years he brings a warm human touch to his subjects.

What are non-books? TheyÂ’re short, to-the-point booklets, manuals, articles, and collections (including collections of stories, humour, recipes, and tips), which are easy-to-read alternatives to books to save you time. 90% of all non-fiction readers do not read their books from cover-to-cover. They donÂ’t have time. Non-books are the perfect way to get information fast.

Listen Up! Your Unused Hearing Aids Offer Others a Sound Life

Listen Up! Your Unused Hearing Aids Offer Others a Sound Life

Legacy Hills Hearing Center by Estes Audiology and the Georgetown Sertoma Club Will Collect Donated Hearing Aids on May 15 during Hearing Aid Roundup.

Georgetown, TX (Vocus) April 30, 2010

Legacy Hills Hearing Center by Estes Audiology and the Georgetown Sertoma Club hope to be up to their ears in hearing aids when they host the Hearing Aid Roundup on Saturday, May 15, 2010. The Roundup will celebrate Better Speech and Hearing Month by asking residents in Georgetown and surrounding communities to donate their used hearing aids. The event will take place from 11 am until 3 pm at Legacy Hills Hearing Center and will include free grilled hot dogs and beverages for the public.

Donated hearing aids will be refurbished and then given to the UT-Austin Speech and Hearing Clinic, where the clinicians and audiology doctoral students will fit and make them available to those who would otherwise be unable to afford them. All donations are tax deductible.

“Everyone should have the chance to hear,” said Soriya Estes, AuD, owner and founder of Legacy Hills Hearing Center by Estes Audiology. “So each donation of an unused hearing aid is a gift of a better life for someone who is hearing impaired. We encourage everyone to come by, drop off unused hearing aids and enjoy our refreshments and some Texas hospitality.”

“Even if you don’t have a hearing aid to donate but would still like to help, the Sertoma Club will also accept monetary donations for its Hearing Aid Recycling Program,” added Jim Wilson, Speech & Hearing Director of the Georgetown Sertoma Club.

The Sertoma Club is a national organization that focuses on assisting people with hearing health issues and educating the public on the issues surrounding hearing health. The Sertoma Hearing Aid Recycling Program also known as S. H.A. R.P. is sponsored by Sertoma clubs throughout North America.

Each year, hearing loss affects millions of Americans. It is estimated that more than 34 million Americans suffer from hearing loss, including children.

The Hearing Aid Roundup will take place at 1530 Sun City Blvd. in Georgetown, next to Legacy Hills Hearing Center by Estes Audiology. The event is free to the public.

About Estes Audiology:

Women More Likely Than Men to Be Sleep Deprived

Women More Likely Than Men to Be Sleep Deprived

There are many factors that cause women to be more sleep-deprived than men. But a new pill claims to address sleeplessness no matter what the cause.

Cordova, TN (PRWEB) June 23, 2006

There are many factors that cause women to be more sleep-deprived than men. But a new pill claims to address sleeplessness no matter what the cause.

Women are especially vulnerable to chronic sleep deprivation, according to Dr. Sherry Duwe, clinical director for The Sleep and Mood Clinic in Portland, Oregon. Because of several factors that affect women, such as menstruation, menopause, as well as constant worry and the need for perfection, they are more likely than men to be unable to get the amount or quality of sleep they need.

Dr. Duwe noted that the typical woman in today’s society is always on the go and tends to juggle many different tasks, such as kids, work, and household duties, among others. For these women, it is a problem of not enough hours in the day to get everything done; thus they spend time being busy and awake when they should be winding down and falling asleep.

For many other women, Duwe pointed out, the lack of sleep is not so much determined by the woman herself, but by her hormones. Problems that occur with menopause, like hot flashes, night sweats, and just plain sleeplessness, have been combated in previous years by hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Of course, with the recent news of the dangers of HRT, most women are opting to just ride out their menopause symptoms, and their sleep is compromised because of it.

In addition, a normal and healthy woman could find herself having problems with sleep simply because of menstruation pain and hormone changes. Tossing and turning all night because of cramps or a headache is not uncommon for many women.

There are many factors that can affect one’s sleep patterns. One company called Selmedica Healthcare in Memphis, Tennessee claims to have formulated a dietary supplement that will help with sleeplessness no matter what the cause. Their new product, Diavad, uses the power of herbs to help the body achieve the balance needed to maintain a healthy, normal sleep pattern, says a company spokesman.

Educational Website for MSM is Now Located at MSMGuide. com

This educational portal offers a wealth of scientific facts and research information to foster greater understanding and confidence in the Benefits of MSM as a nutritional component.

Vancouver, Washington, (PRWEB) July 15, 2007

An educational Website with information about MSM nutritional sulfur benefits is now located at http://www. MSMGuide. com (http://www. MSMGuide. com). This educational portal offers a wealth of scientific facts and research information to foster greater understanding and confidence in the Benefits of MSM as a nutritional component.

MSMGuide. com, the first and only independent website to focus on the joint health supplement MSM, was launched on September 11, 2006. This educational portal offers a wealth of scientific facts and research information to foster greater understanding and confidence in the Benefits of MSM as a nutritional component.

Sponsored by MSM manufacturer Cardinal Nutrition, the site has no company information, product links or brand recommendations and exists solely as an information resource for consumers, retailers, researchers, practitioners and the media. The entire content was created by the MSMGuide. com Advisory Council.

"Nearly every leading joint health brand available on the nutritional supplement market contains MSM, and yet there is a tremendous lack of knowledge and awareness about the effectiveness and safety of MSM. MSMGuide. com has been created as a resource for MSM science and research," says Dr. Appleton.

The MSM Guide site features include:
Consumer Section with MSM Facts, FAQs, Dosage Tables, Manufacturing, and Safety. Practitioner Section with FAQ's and Interactions with Medications. Arthritis and Joint Pain Section with cause/treatment of common and sports joint pain. MSM Research Section with annotated research from as far back as 20 years.

Note to media: The site is designed to be an ongoing resource for news about MSM and joint health. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know. The Advisory Council is available for interviews at your convenience.

Consumer Survey Identifies Need for Education
A recent consumer survey with nearly 1,000 responses looked at the habits of people over 40 years of age who take vitamins and supplements. Of the total, 61 percent reported symptoms of arthritis and 42 percent had taken some form of a joint health supplement. Among joint health supplement users, MSM was the third most common supplement used, closely following chondroitin and glucosamine forms. The survey, conducted by Mainspring Marketing, also found:

Among joint health supplement users, 40 percent were aware of MSM.

Non-joint health supplement users who also reported symptoms of arthritis identified a "lack of credible information on joint health supplements" as the one of the top reasons for not using them.

Word of mouth was the primary way consumers heard of MSM, followed by articles and Internet

"We have a responsibility to provide credible information to consumers and practitioners about what we continue to learn about MSM so they can make informed decisions," says David Lakey, president of Cardinal Nutrition. David Lakey has sponsored rigorous clinical studies, testing, and education of MSM since introducing the supplement for human use in 1989.

CDI kicks off the season by wrapping up Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Winnipeg, MB (Vocus) October 29, 2009

CDI College in Winnipeg will wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month by attending the Manitoba Moose’s Ladies’ Night on October 30, 2009. The night will also officially kick off a season-long ticket giveaway initiative by the college.

According to CDI Director Tahl East, the new ticket giveaway grew out of the college’s “Pink Day” breast cancer awareness fundraiser on October 1, 2009. Students and staff decked themselves out in pink and decorated the entire campus in rose-coloured streamers, balloons and signage. In just a matter of hours, the campus raised hundreds of dollars in donations to the breast cancer foundation (pictures of the event are available at http://www. facebook. com/CDICollege (http://www. facebook. com/CDICollege)).

“The next day a Manitoba Moose account executive drove past our building on his way to work, saw the building all in pink and called me,” says East. “The rest is history.”

As a result, the campus was invited to attend Ladies’ Night and the college purchased season tickets to all of the team’s home games. To continue with their community involvement, CDI decided to donate tickets to various local charities throughout the season, including MacDonald Youth Services, Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Knowles Centre and Winnipeg Harvest. Each charitable group will receive several pairs to their designated game.

“Community involvement and giving back is part of education,” says East. “As a college, we want our graduates to be more than just academically ready; we want them to be ready as people. Humanity is bigger than any diploma, but together they are unbeatable.”

In addition to the ticket giveaway, CDI College will also have a “Pink Booth” as part of Ladies Night at the MTS Centre. To learn more about their programs and other community initiatives across the country, visit http://www. cdicollege. ca (http://www. cdicollege. ca).

Breaking the cycle of substance abuse among adults who suffered abuse and neglect in childhood is the focus of a new best treatment practices guide released today by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).

The publication, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Child Abuse And Neglect Issues, is the 36th in a series of Treatment Improvement Protocols published by CSAT. It offers guidance to substance abuse treatment counselors and other providers in identifying and treating

Adults with alcohol or drug abuse addictions who are survivors of

Childhood physical, sexual or other abuse or neglect. This new guide warns that, failure to treat both problems puts children of these patients at risk for abuse and neglect, and eventual self-medication with alcohol or drugs.

"While not all victims of childhood abuse and neglect become substance abusers, the relationship is clear," SAMHSA Administrator Nelba Chavez, Ph. D., said. "It is critically important that professionals who treat substance abuse in adults recognize the signs of prior childhood neglect and abuse. With estimates of as many as two thirds of all those in substance abuse treatment reporting that they were physically, sexually or emotionally abused during childhood, we must focus on treating these

Adults who are raising the next generation of children."

CSAT Director H. Westley Clark, M. D., J. D., M. P.H., explained that "TIP 36

Will help alcohol and drug treatment providers work more effectively with adults with histories of childhood abuse or neglect, and adults who abuse, or are at risk of abusing, their own children. Without proper screening and assessment of their patients, counselors may wrongly attribute symptoms of childhood trauma-related disorders to the consequences of

Current substance abuse. Understanding and treating the root causes of clients' symptoms will greatly increase the effectiveness of substance abuse treatment."

Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 36 points out that screening substance abusers for childhood abuse or neglect can have the following benefits:

Stopping the cycle: TIP 36 highlights research indicating that, while adults who were abused or neglected in their childhoods do not always abuse their own children, they are at greater risk for doing so.

Decreasing the probability of relapse:

Many substance abusers consume substances to self-medicate post-traumatic stress symptom related to childhood physical or sexual abuse or other trauma.

Improving a client's overall psychological and interpersonal functioning:

Childhood sexual abuse and neglect may affect the individual's self-concept, sense of self-esteem and ability to self-actualize.

Improving program outcome: Screening for a history of child abuse or neglect will help a program determine the needs of a client and thus improve substance abuse treatment outcomes.

The report documents the association between one form of abuse, sexual abuse, and depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, eating disorders,

Personality disorders, dissociative disorders and substance abuse.

Treatment Improvement Protocols are an integral part of CSAT's determination to bridge the gap between research and the needs and practices of treatment professionals and administrators. TIPS are

Developed by consensus panels of non-federal experts to provide best practices guidance to clinicians, program administrators and payers. Judy Howard, M. D., Professor of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles, chaired the consensus panel for

TIP 36.

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is a component of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA, a public health agency within the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the lead federal agency for improving access to quality substance abuse prevention, addiction treatment and mental health services in the U. S. Publications are often available at www. samhsa. gov or on

Automotive Manufacturers Team Up for Corporate Responsibility Training

Automotive Manufacturers Team Up for Corporate Responsibility Training

Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota in collaboration with the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) today completed three days of training in “Responsible Working Conditions” in Istanbul, Turkey.

Southfield, Mich. (Vocus) May 27, 2010

Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota in collaboration with the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) today completed three days of training in “Responsible Working Conditions” in Istanbul, Turkey. AIAG is a non-profit, member-driven organization that works with a wide range of manufacturing companies and service providers to help them operate at peak performance.

The AIAG-hosted training is designed, sponsored and funded by the automakers to help their suppliers meet local regulations – and customer expectations – for acceptable environmental and working conditions (http://cr. aiag. org). It is a supplement to corporate responsibility (http://cr. aiag. org) commitments the automakers already have in place.

The training, developed in collaboration with North American and European automakers, is part of AIAG’s comprehensive corporate responsibility (http://cr. aiag. org) initiative and is modeled after programs the North American OEMs Chrysler, Ford, GM, and Honda successfully launched with AIAG in China, and later in Mexico with the addition of Toyota. To-date, there have been more than 900 participants and information has been cascaded to more than 13,500 suppliers.

“AIAG is known for working collaboratively with the automotive industry to improve product quality and eliminate waste,” said J. Scot Sharland, executive director of AIAG. “Now, we’re finding that the same team-directed approach, proven methodologies and commitment to continuous improvement can be applied to environmental strategies, ethics (http://cr. aiag. org) training and human resource management. The goal of this training is to help ensure that all suppliers share a common understanding and commitment to responsible business practices that protect both the environment and our employees.”

Local rules, customer expectations and the fundamental principles of responsible working conditions will all be addressed in the training, as well as specific areas such as child labor, forced labor, freedom of association, harassment and discrimination, health and safety, wages and benefits and working hours. Programs in India and Brazil are in development. All of the participating automakers have demonstrated full commitment to the enhancement of working conditions in the global automotive supply chain.

“Ford believes the auto supply industry should demonstrate respect for the people who produce parts for vehicles, no matter where they live,” said Tony Brown, Group Vice President, Global Purchasing, Ford Motor Company. “We started our training program in 2003. We believe it is essential to share our learnings with AIAG and the other members of AIAG since we use much of the same supply base. It’s important that we build on our experience, not only to avoid duplicating efforts, but also to advance the agenda of working conditions as rapidly as possibly.”

In addition to the working conditions training, automotive manufacturers are also working at AIAG on other initiatives under the umbrella of corporate responsibility with the support of Program Manager Jenifer Chambers Young of the Go Green Campaign. The organization hosts a web site http://cr. aiag. org (http://cr. aiag. org) providing a repository of tools and best practices related to social and environmental programs including greenhouse gas reporting, end-of-life vehicle, International Materials Data System (IMDS), Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals (REACH), and health, safety and environment.

About AIAG
AIAG was founded in 1982 by General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corp. to develop and share best practices to create a leaner, more efficient supply base. Since then, AIAG has grown and evolved to address increasingly complex global supply chain, manufacturing and quality issues, and now has tools and processes that can help diverse industries improve their performance, by protecting and enhancing corporate reputations, rooting out waste and inefficiency, uncovering cost savings and improving quality.

AIAG’s Corporate Responsibility Web site (http://cr. aiag. org (http://cr. aiag. org)) is publicly accessible and was developed as a global resource containing important information for manufacturers and their supply base including tools for self-assessments, planning templates to facilitate cascading of the message, education and training for lower tier suppliers and direct links to other Corporate Responsibility programs.

SIUE School of Pharmacy Launches Collaborative Site for Pain, Palliative Care Pharmacy

SIUE School of Pharmacy Launches Collaborative Site for Pain, Palliative Care Pharmacy

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy has launched a new Web site: www. pharmacypainsummit. com, designed to encourage thought sharing and learning among practitioners in pain and palliative care pharmacy.

Edwardsville, IL (Vocus) October 1, 2009

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy (http://www. siue. edu/pharmacy/) has launched a new Web site: www. pharmacypainsummit. com, designed to encourage thought sharing and learning among practitioners in pain and palliative care pharmacy.

The site is structured as a blog with comment sections enabled for ongoing discussion among those involved with and interested in health care, pain management, palliative care and related pharmacy topics.

The site was launched to coincide with the Strategic Planning Summit for the Advancement of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacy (http://www. pharmacypainsummit. com/), which will be held on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 1-2, at SIUE's School of Pharmacy.

Coordinator Chris Herndon, assistant professor of pharmacy at SIUE, said the site will foster education and discussion about the concepts of pain and palliative care education and how those concepts pertain to today's professional pharmacist. "We're encouraging online collaboration among pharmacists and have created the site as an open, collaborative space used to foster discussion among all health care providers," Herndon said.

"We believe hosting this space is an added benefit not only for our students, but for the entire health care community."

Herndon said recommendations that come out of the upcoming summit will lead to pharmacists putting what they have learned into practice. "I am urging health care practitioners and pharmacists to be as active as possible in disseminating recommendations by taking part in online discussion to be shared among colleagues."

The SIUE School of Pharmacy reached an important milestone earlier this year with its advancement to full accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (http://www. siue. edu/news/archives/ArchivesJUL2009.shtml) (ACPE), the national agency for the accreditation of professional degree programs in pharmacy. The School has been called a national model for other new schools of pharmacy.

About SIUE
As the only downstate Illinois pharmacy doctorate program, the SIUE School of Pharmacy addresses the growing need for well-trained pharmacists in a career field that is experiencing rapid and dramatic growth.

The SIUE School of Pharmacy offers a quality pharmacy education that will prepare you for a successful career in health care. Earn a doctor of pharmacy degree (http://www. siue. edu/pharmacy/PharmD. shtml) from a fully accredited pharmacy school that serves as a model for new pharmacy education programs.

SIUE is a nationally recognized public university offering a broad choice of degrees and programs ranging from career-oriented fields of study to the essential, more traditional, liberal arts. At SIUE we offer 44 baccalaureate degrees, 13 post-baccalaureate certificates, 47 master's degrees, 11 post - master's certificates, two first-professional degrees, and one post-first professional certificate. How To Really Stop Violence In Sports

How To Really Stop Violence In Sports

Jay P. Granat, Ph. D., Psychotherapist and Founder of StayInTheZone. com outlines violence ending strategies for athletes, fans, coaches, league officials and parents of athletes.

(PRWEB) December 2, 2004

Violence in both basketball and football have dominated the headlines lately.

Because I am a psychotherapist who has worked with many athletes and parents of athletes with anger management issues, I would like to outline several strategies for ending the alarming behaviors we see all too often in athletic contests.

Players, coaches and managers at all levels of competition should be required to shake hands at the start and end of each contest.

These simple gestures will remind athletes that they are competing against fellow human beings during the heat of battle. Furthermore, these simple acts will promote sportsmanship and set a good example for young athletes and their parents.

Second, leagues should have clear rules outlining punishments for various offenses in a clear and succinct manner. This will help athletes to have an awareness of the consequences of their actions.

Similarly, penalties for fans who misbehave should be posted and announced prior to all sporting events. Stating these guidelines clearly will help make athletes and fans accountable for their actions.

Some of the violence we see is related to drugs, alcohol and gambling. The roles of alcohol abuse, substance abuse and compulsive gambling and their connections to violent behavior need to be studied carefully by psychologists, social psychologists and sociologists.

Also, all athletes should take courses in anger management before the start of the season. These courses should include training in meditation, self-hypnosis, conflict resolution, communication skills, sportsmanship and emotional or affective education.

Moreover, this kind of training should begin when the athletes are age six or seven. It is never to early to teach the importance of treating others with kindness, respect and dignity.

It has been said many times that the microcosm of sports mirror the problems the macrocosm of society. There is a likelihood that the violence that we find on the news, in video games, on the roads, in movies, and on televison does have an impact on our values, behaviors and attitudes. As was mentioned earlier, the relationship between these media and violence needs to be better understood. My own view is that certain people imitate what they see, while others do not. Perhaps, in time, we can identify who is at risk for modeling this behavior and is not.

It has been known for some time that people from violent families with a history of alchol and substance abuse are at at greater risk for behaving in a violent manner than are people who come from families without these disorders. Coaches, parents and league officials need to be aware of this fact and monitor athletes whom are at risk and intervene before an incident occurs.

Last, parents, educators, coaches, owners, union representatives, mental health professionals and law enforcement personnel need to work together to build a more sensitive world in which we value competition, but also cherish the importance of the feelings of our fellow human beings. We need to remember that, “Nothing is so strong as gentleness.”

Avvo Launches Free Doctor Ratings Directory to Help Consumers Find Unbiased Health Information and Interact with Doctors on the Web

Avvo Launches Free Doctor Ratings Directory to Help Consumers Find Unbiased Health Information and Interact with Doctors on the Web

New Doctor Ratings Directory Contains Profiles for Over 800,000 U. S. Doctors

Seattle, WA (Vocus) November 1, 2010

After growing to become the world’s largest lawyer ratings directory, Avvo Inc., has expanded its offerings to help consumers navigate the medical field.

Today, Avvo launched its free doctor ratings directory, changing the way consumers find information that impacts their healthcare and allowing them to interact with doctors online. Avvo also introduced a free medical question and answer forum where certified doctors answer consumers’ health-related questions.

Consumers are increasingly looking for information about their health on the web. comScore reported 96.6 million people in the U. S. were looking for health information online in the month of August alone. But, even though people are looking for doctors on the web, they are not finding unbiased, robust information to help guide them.

In a recent survey commissioned by Avvo, 80 percent of consumers spent two hours or less researching their last doctor. The survey also found 65 percent of respondents admitted to spending more time researching family vacations than a pediatrician for their children, and 49 percent said they spend more time researching a new family car than a new family doctor.

To help consumers get more information and better guidance regarding their health matters, Avvo offers detailed information about a doctor’s background, experience and disciplinary record, as well as an editorial Avvo Rating for every doctor, and patient and peer ratings, all in one place.

Avvo’s free doctor directory contains profiles for over 800,000 doctors (90 percent of licensed doctors) throughout the nation. Unlike other doctor directories and resources, Avvo does not charge visitors for its robust information, instead focusing on getting those in need as much information as possible, as easily as possible.

“As evidenced by our survey results, consumers are not spending time on their health issues because they are overwhelmed by medicine’s big words, complex procedures and serious consequences,” said Mark Britton, founder and CEO at Avvo. “Because of this, many people simply run into the arms of ‘pay-to-play’ directories where the “recommended” doctor is the one paying the most to advertise.”

Avvo is advertising-sponsored; however, advertising does not impact a doctor’s Avvo Rating or his or her participation or placement in Avvo’s search results.

Supporting Avvo’s new medical offering is a world-class Board of Medical Advisors:
Robert E. McAfee, M. D.: Former American Medical Association president, surgeon and advocate for family/national healthcare

Hunter Wessells M. D.:Professor and Nelson Chair in Urology, University of Washington

Tina S. Alster, M. D.:Founder and Director, Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery

Andrew I. Caster, M. D.:Pioneer in Lasik surgery and Founder of Caster Eye Clinic

Hear Dr. Wessells and Mark Britton talk about Avvo’s new doctor ratings directory.

“In the legal arena, we grew from concept to market leader in three years by helping consumers make better choices related to their legal matters,” continued Britton.“With the support of our medical advisors – some of the brightest minds in medicine–along with our extensive consumer and doctor research, we expect to usher in a new era for consumers who need help choosing the right doctor and researching their medical needs.”
