The Keeper(tm) Menstrual Cup Featured in Popular Online Newsletter

The Keeper(tm) Menstrual Cup Featured in Popular Online Newsletter

Alternative health product recently featured in the second most-visited natural health site in the world, with 100,000 subscribers and over two million visitors per month.

(PRWEB) September 11, 2002

Chicago, Illinois – The Keeper(tm) Menstrual Cup was recently featured in an online article entitled “The Shocking Truth About Feminine Hygiene Products -- What Are Your Options?” on the website, www. mercola. com. The Keeper is an alternative feminine hygiene product offering women a comfortable, convenient and environment-friendly option to over-the-counter synthetic disposable menstrual products. www. mercola. com is the second most-visited natural health site in the world, with 100,000 subscribers and over two million visitors per month.

The article covers many little known facts about synthetic menstrual products. Among these facts: the synthetic materials used in these products are often so absorbent they create a perfect breeding ground for Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) -- especially in young females who havenÂ’t had time to develop the necessary antibodies; also, the chlorine used in the bleaching process can release dioxin, a known carcinogen, into a womanÂ’s vagina, and indirectly, into the uterus.

It may also surprise people to know that manufacturers of pads and tampons are not required to list the ingredients they use in their products anywhere on or in the package. Women are therefore in the position of unknowingly putting potentially cancerous materials directly in contact with their vagina and reproductive organs.

The article quotes Karen Houppert, a well-regarded author on the topic of menstruation, who points out that many other countries, including Great Britain and Germany, have been “much quicker to remedy the potential dioxin problem.” According to Ms. Houppert: “In Germany, 50 per cent of the paper industry has already switched from a chlorine bleaching process to a less toxic alternative,” and “Ontario and British Columbia have passed laws requiring pulp mills to eliminate organochlorine discharges. . . ”

Also quoted is Tom Riley, author of Price of a Life, who has represented more victims of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) than any other attorney: “All experts agree that the number of TSS cases in the United States is under-reported. That is because reporting by the states to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is voluntary and most states are unwilling to incur the expense of gathering the data and submitting it to the CDC.”

Fortunately, as the article points out, there are several alternatives, including The Keeper, which can be used separately or together with the other alternative products mentioned in the article.

The Keeper is the small, internally worn, reusable soft rubber cup that has been on the market for more than fifteen years. Environment-friendly and economical, The Keeper is used and distributed by women around the world.

Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Mercola has been well known in the Chicago area for many years. He started his very popular online health newsletter in 1997.

Nourish Interactive, Inc. Offers Free Online Games And Tools for The Entire Family to Become Fit And Healthy

Nourish Interactive, Inc. Offers Free Online Games And Tools for The Entire Family to Become Fit And Healthy

Nourish Interactive launches a website that offers free nutrition oriented tools and games. This site is designed to help parents and children learn about the importance of nutrition and exercise in a fun way.

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) February 29, 2008

Web based company Nourish Interactive™, Inc. brings innovation and creative use of technology to families with the introduction of its website (nourishinteractive. com), tapping into the trend of using online tools to teach children and their parents important information in a new way. The online site creates an environment where matching tools for both the child and parent help facilitate the learning experience as it relates to a balanced diet and exercise. Free online tools send similar messages to both the parent and child, so the entire family can work as a team to establish good nutrition at home.

"The Nourish Interactive website offers free games and new ideas every month to teach children and parents nutritious habits for healthy living," said Michelle Mirizzi, MS, a registered dietician and nutrition consultant. "By playing these interactive games like Pyramid Puzzles, Matching Meals or Whack a Snack, children will definitely have fun learning how to create a healthy lifestyle."

Hosted by Chef Solus™ and two explorers, Katlin and Kevin, children have the option to play free online games such as "Falling Food" and "Bon Appetite Arcade." In addition, they can read about the adventures of Katlin and Kevin - such as going to the farmers market to learn about fresh produce. To supplement what children are learning, parents also receive a similar monthly newsletter. The online connectivity allows parents a window into what their child is learning as parents also learn about nutrition in a positive, interactive way. Treating the parent and child as a unit by sending consistent messaging reinforces the team effort and commitment necessary to create healthy nutrition habits for the entire family.

"There is a growing population of overweight children who are susceptible to medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. There are no easy answers, but after talking to many health care professionals, I realized the best solution is prevention," said Maggie LaBarbera, Founder of Nourish Interactive and a former ICU nurse. "Prevention can best be promoted through early education, and parents play a key role in their child's education. The educational nutrition games (http://www. nourishinteractive. com), interactive activities and tools on our website (nourishinteractive. com) are meant to be used conjointly - both parent and child learn in their own way about better nutrition, and most importantly, they will have fun while learning."

Free online tools for parents on the site interface with the child's games and resources to show parents what their child is learning, and how their activities and games are providing valuable information about nutrition, energy, and exercise in a fun, engaging way. The short, interactive educational pieces for parents explain the 2005 Food Pyramid, break-down food labels, and include a nutrition dictionary. Other tools include a BMI calculator to determine their child's healthy weight, and family tracking sheets so the entire family can set goals and measure progress. Additional resources for parents include links to websites that provide a wealth of information about good health, as well as links to websites for children that offer supplemental insight into good health.

About Nourish Interactive
Nourish Interactive, Inc. (http://www. nourishinteractive. com) is committed to educating both children and their parents about the importance of nutrition and exercise, with the belief that prevention is the best treatment. Nourish Interactive has developed a learning platform that comes to life with its interactive online game that offers fun, innovative ways to empower children to make healthy choices. In creating an educational product that involves both children and their parents, Nourish Interactive acknowledges the key roles both parents play to make an effective learning experience.

Today Vortex Connect, the leader in Mobile Workforce Management, announces Mobile Complete, a platform to extend and maximize the investment organizations have made in mobility. Essentially Mobile Complete is based on absolute coverage across multiple enterprise solutions and is a robust extension to the highly successful mobile workforce management modules Vortex Connect formally launched one year ago. Integrating into multiple solutions and solving multiple problems with one platform, Mobile Complete is the first and only platform to tie mobility into workforce management, scheduling, time and attendance, ERP, case management, CRM, task management and HRMS systems.

Combining these six modules with an underlying architecture designed for multiple integration points provides organizations with the answer to solve their most complex workforce management and operational needs.

“It would be irresponsible for us as a mobile leader in enterprise applications to expect organizations to be satisfied solving just one problem,” said CEO Adrian Schauer. “Our clients have asked us to help them fill multiple holes in their operations via mobility and we are thrilled to be announcing that we will be providing a more formal approach to this challenge.” Mr. Schauer adds, “This goes beyond releasing new features in a new version, this is a wholesale change to the way organizations will be able to leverage their investment in mobility. Mobilizing workforce management is still the primary focus for our clients. However after they have gone live it is the next logical step to look around the organization and identify other areas that could benefit from mobilizing in a secure and seamless environment.”

Vortex Connect’s suite of solutions are available in both stand-alone deployments as well as integrated into the majority of leading enterprise WFM, Scheduling, ERP, HRMS and Operations solutions such as Kronos, ADP, Workforce Software, API Healthcare, Clairvia, Opterus and ScheduleSoft. Therapeutic Vaccines Moving Beyond Cancer and HIV

Therapeutic Vaccines Moving Beyond Cancer and HIV

New report by Applied Data Research analyzes technology and commercial factors for emerging therapeutic vaccines.

Nashua, NH (PRWEB) April 19, 2007

A new report by Applied Data Research analyzes technology and commercial factors for emerging therapeutic vaccines.

Distinct from prophylactic vaccines, therapeutic vaccines are designed to be administered to patients who have already acquired an illness that is capable of avoiding the immune response. By introducing disease-specific stimulatory components to the immune system in a highly structured way, therapeutic vaccines aim to selectively activate the immune system against the disease and improve the patient's prognosis. For many illnesses such as hepatitis, tuberculosis and malaria that are refractory to conventional treatment regimens, vaccines that can engineer a specific and aggressive response present a highly attractive approach.

The science and technology of therapeutic vaccines are still evolving, with key elements such as disease-specific immunogenicity factors, antigen source, the role of co-stimulators and adjuvants, and vaccine delivery still under investigation for many target conditions. The highly individualized nature of the immune response makes patient variability a key focal point of vaccine design. While autologous vaccines have the advantage of being specific for each patient's disease, they are expensive and labor intensive to create. The idea behind allogeneic vaccines is that they would work for every patient with the same disease.

These findings are contained in a new and comprehensive report -- Therapeutic Vaccines - Beyond Cancer and HIV. The report has been carefully researched and written to provide timely and insightful analysis of key factors and developments shaping the therapeutic vaccine marketplace. Numerous charts, tables and graphs complement the text, with evaluations and assessments of current and probable future market developments, technology issues and business factors.

Government personnel typically sending hundred of faxes can reliably accomplish the task in a matter of seconds from their desktops via SMTP-compliant email clients running under the Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes or SAP messaging platforms.

“One particular XMediusFAX feature that our customers appreciate is fair-queuing to manage large bursts of faxes,” said Martin Demers, President and CEO of Interstar Technologies. “The technology is smart enough to allow other fax requests into the queue so that a single large job does not shut down all fax traffic.”

Some of the government agencies, among others, deploying InterstarÂ’s fax server solutions include: Sacramento County, American National Red Cross, Canadian Senate, Canadian Red Cross, and Canadian Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness (OCIPEP), as well as key government contractors such as Titan Corporation, TriWest Healthcare Alliance and Boeing.

“We selected Interstar's XMediusFAX solution for its industry-class, fault-tolerant technology and high scalability,” said Rick Green, Vice President & CIO of TriWest Healthcare Alliance is a Phoenix-based corporation that partners with the US Department of Defense (DoD) to provide access to cost-effective, high-quality healthcare for active and retired uniformed services members and their families. TriWest is under contract with the DoD to manage and administer the TRICARE program throughout 21 states in the Western US region.

About XMediusFAX® and VoIP networks

About a decade ago, VoIP was introduced as a technology that would enable businesses to reap significant cost savings, while offering more features and capabilities, such as improved mobility. While VoIP has already accomplished that to a large degree, faxing in todayÂ’s VoIP-enabled organizations still remains a legacy technology requiring POTS phone lines and/or specialized equipment.

XMediusFAX is a boardless T.38 Fax Over IP fax server solution that integrates seamlessly with leading IP telephony technologies from companies such as Cisco, 3Com/AudioCodes, and Alcatel. It maximizes ROI, streamlines workflow, and solves analog fax problems by eliminating POTS lines, specialized hardware, paper, toner and maintenance costs.

Currently, fax server solutions on the market require both fax boards and VoIP gateways to operate, and are therefore more expensive and complicated to support. XMediusFAX differentiates itself from the competition by solely operating with either VoIP gateways or fax boards, not both.

XMediusFAX is an essential component of unified messaging. Faxes can now share a common inbox, along with email and voicemail. Users can send and receive faxes directly from Microsoft Outlook, an SMTP email client, desktop application, or any T.37-compliant multifunction device (MFD). XMediusFAX, runs on Windows 2000 and 2003, and is available in Enterprise, Express and Service Provider (EE, X and SP) editions. Various email messaging platforms supported include Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003, Lotus Notes, SAP and Cisco Unity. Other key features include support for H.323 and SIP, SMTP/POP3, Least Cost Routing (LCR), G4 TIF file format, redundancy for mission critical applications, Active Directory synchronization, MMC Snap-in, HTML email notification, optional API modules, and a client for advanced fax functionalities.

The award-winning XMediusFAX truly completes and delivers on the VoIP promise of improved features/functionality and increased productivity and ROI.

Cozco Management's Restaurants Receive Coast-to-Coast Acclaim

Cozco Management's Restaurants Receive Coast-to-Coast Acclaim

Reviewers for a national magazine and a Delaware Valley newspaper gave accolades to two of Cozco’s winning concepts, The Bistro @ Cherry Hill and Philly Steak & Gyro Co.

Mt. Laurel, NJ (PRWEB) June 8, 2006

Cozco did it again! Following a long line of awards and positive press over the years, our home-run hitting food concepts are now getting national attention.

Best Life magazine, available across the U. S., just gave us “best cheesesteak” honors in their recent write-up of food in airports around the country. We’re proud of our Philly Steak & Gyro Co. store in the Philadelphia International Airport. And Best Life is put out by Rodale, which also publishes Men’s Health and Runner’s World, two well-respected national magazines.

But the local press also is giving us kudos -- again -- for our Bistro @ Cherry Hill concept. The South Jersey Courier-Post in its May 25 edition called the Bistro a “tasty, elegant alternative” to run-of-the-mill food court offerings, giving us a four-star rating.

We shouldn’t be surprised. After all, we’ve gotten more then 25 “Best of South Jersey” awards since 1996, been honored as the best Philly cheesesteak by the Philadelphia Inquirer, and received the Richard A. Griesbach Award of Excellence for best overall concessions and best food and beverage, among many other plaudits.

This news proves that the Bistro and Philly Steak & Gyro Co. are two concepts that continue to thrive while consistently satisfying consumers’ tastes!

Hospice By The Bay and Foundation Merge Under One Governing Board

Hospice By The Bay, a Bay Area regional provider of hospice and palliative care, and its Foundation have merged into one entity, Hospice By The Bay, under the guidance of a single Board of Directors.

Larkspur, CA (Vocus) February 12, 2009

As of January 1st, Hospice By The Bay (http://www. hospicebythebay. org/)], a Bay Area regional provider of hospice and palliative care, and its Foundation have become one entity, under the guidance of one Board of Directors. The new entity will be named Hospice By The Bay. The move "creates a single corporate governance structure, fully aligned toward common goals, to ensure that Hospice By The Bay operates efficiently, both strategically and organizationally," said Hospice By The Bay's Chief Executive Officer Sandra Lew, LCSW, and Board of Directors Chair Dennis Gilardi in a memo to Hospice staff. The merger, Lew adds, offers an opportunity to unite care, services, and corporate administration with the fundraising arm of the organization.

The recommendation for reorganization was the result of Hospice By The Bay (http://www. hospicebythebay. org/)'s work in 2007 with the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team, founded by Stanford's Graduate School of Business, which provides pro bono consulting services to nonprofits in the arts, education, the environment, and social services. Previously, Hospice By The Bay and Hospice By The Bay Foundation were two entities, each with its own governing board, and under the parent organization, Hospice By The Bay Partners. Lew, President of the Foundation and CEO of Hospice, will retain the title of CEO.

Hospice By The Bay's 14-member Governing Board includes officers: Dennis A. Gilardi, Chair; Richard S Riede, Esq., Vice Chair; Robert P. Kowal, Treasurer; Linda Simpson, Secretary; Stephen A. Peters, Esq.; Mary L. Taverna, Hospice By The Bay President Emeritus; and Sandra Lew, Hospice By The Bay CEO.

In addition to the Board, there are two advisory councils that include a Board Development Council to oversee and participate in fundraising and community relations, and a Board Operations Council to oversee and participate in the delivery of hospice, palliative care and other clinical programs.

Hospice By The Bay (http://www. hospicebythebay. org/)], which serves Marin, San Francisco, Northern San Mateo, and Sonoma counties, is dedicated to providing the highest quality of end-of-life care to patients and their families regardless of their ability to pay. Hospice By The Bay also serves people whose lives have been affected by the loss of a loved one through its community grief support program.

Hospice By The Bay is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been serving the Bay Area since 1975. Transportation Leaders Discuss Economic Rebound at Annual AmeriQuest Transportation Industry Symposium

Transportation Leaders Discuss Economic Rebound at Annual AmeriQuest Transportation Industry Symposium

With the economy on everyone’s mind, nearly 200 private fleet, truckload carrier, truck rental and leasing, and transportation supply chain executives gathered at the AmeriQuest Transportation Industry Symposium in Orlando recently to discuss the best ways to nurture and grow companies in challenging times. Experts at the event agreed that economic indicators point to a recovery on the horizon for both the U. S. economy and the transportation industry.

Cherry Hill, NJ (PRWEB) March 14, 2010

The mood was cautiously optimistic as nearly 200 transportation leaders from the private fleet, truckload carrier, rental and leasing, and supply communities discussed signs of economic improvement at the 7th Annual AmeriQuest Transportation Industry Symposium held recently in Orlando, FL.

Each year, AmeriQuest – a leading provider of comprehensive transportation management services – brings together the top minds in the industry to discover the best ways to nurture and capitalize on innovation in the industry. This year’s topics included the state of the economy, “the road ahead” for the transportation industry, financial challenges, and the importance of embracing change and innovation.

After an undeniably tough 2009, economic indicators for the trucking industry and industry in general are showing signs of a recovery, said Dan North, Chief Economist for Euler Hermes ACI. North took an in-depth look at the current state of the economy, pointing to indicators showing that the recession has ended, and cautioning about other economic challenges still ahead. A nationally recognized expert featured regularly on ABC, CNBC, FOX Business Network, and Bloomberg Television, North is one of the most highly anticipated speakers at the AmeriQuest event.

Keynote speaker Lou Pritchett, former Proctor & Gamble executive and author of "Stop Paddling & Start Rocking the Boat", spoke on "How to Survive and Succeed by Leading Change". He warned attendees that in the decade ahead, the source of corporate strength will be its willingness to change, not cling to stability.

Bill Graves, President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations, presented an overview of the current economic environment, national and industry policy issues, and an industry outlook. He saw signs of recovery in the uptick in manufacturing output and gross domestic product and its expected positive impact on the transportation industry.

Other speakers included Robert Brands, Innovation Coach, on "How to Deliver Profitable Growth Through Sustained Innovation"; Tom Hutchinson, President Mid American Group, on "Healthcare Reform: What Does it Mean for You?"; Thomas Tray, Aon Trucking Practice, on "Property, Casualty and Liability Insurance"; and Penny Gillespie of Gillespie International Inc., on "Need More Cash? Check Your Financial Supply Chain".

The AmeriQuest Transportation Symposium also included two panels discussing capital and credit markets and industry trends, as well as a showcase of suppliers and products such as MRO supplies, capital equipment, material handling products, and technology solutions.

SaltWorks Posts Record Sales

SaltWorks Posts Record Sales

Seattle-area company leads sea salt revolution.

Redmond, WA (PRWEB) October 17, 2006

With sales of $5 million in 2006 and a forecast of $10 million in 2007, SaltWorks™, Inc. (http://www. seasalt. com (http://www. seasalt. com)) is leading the sea salt revolution. And it is a revolution: This year alone, SaltWorks will sell over 10 million pounds of sea salt.

The company that was founded on owner Mark Zoske’s love of gourmet sea salt has come a long way in just a few years. From 2003 to 2006, SaltWorks saw a 2,000% increase in sales--and there is no slow-down on the horizon.

“Sea salt is one of the fastest-growing segments of the gourmet food industry. Consumer trends indicate the gourmet sea salt market is here to stay,” Zoske explained. “Once you start using sea salt, you can never go back. Consumers are looking for healthier gourmet sea salt to purchase and use at home, and they are demanding that manufacturers use natural sea salt in their products.”

To meet the demand, SaltWorks is moving out of its 10,000-square-foot Redmond, Wash. building into a facility triple that size in Woodinville, Wash. The new SaltWorks headquarters houses 6,000 square feet of office space, 14,000 square feet of climate-controlled warehouse space, and a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art packaging facility. The new space gives SaltWorks the ability to hold two million pounds of sea salt in inventory, ready for immediate shipment.

Since 2001, SaltWorks has become the bulk sea salt (http://www. saltworks. us/shop/category. asp? idCat=3) supplier of choice for most of the largest spice companies, food processors and gourmet stores in the U. S. The company launched its Artisan Salt Co. (http://www. artisansalt. com (http://www. artisansalt. com)) brand of retail packaged gourmet salts in 2005; Artisan now offers over 30 varieties of salt in three packaging options and is available in hundreds of high-end retailers across the country. The brand’s sales have exploded, with projected annual sales of several hundred thousand units.

Greater consumer awareness of health factors may be driving the surging interest in gourmet sea salt. “The new lower-sodium guidelines are a plus for our business,” said Zoske. “Now that people are watching their sodium intake very carefully, they’re finding that they can get more flavor with less sodium by upgrading to all-natural sea salt.”

And SaltWorks does all-natural particularly well. The company buys directly from the farmers that produce the salt--harvested and dried as it has been for centuries--and imports it without a middleman.

“SaltWorks is experiencing phenomenal growth because we focus on meeting our customers’ needs and offering a great product,” Zoske stated.

About SaltWorks™, Inc.

Founded in 2002, SaltWorks imports premium gourmet sea salts and bath salts from countries worldwide and supplies them to the wholesale, retail and consumer markets throughout North America. The company is committed to providing the purest, most natural products possible. To learn more, visit http://www. seasalt. com (http://www. seasalt. com).

Money and Markets: Dr. Martin Weiss Discusses Zaniest U. S. Election Campaign of Modern Times

Martin Weiss, Ph. D. examines the affects of a Democrat administration on an already falling dollar. In this issue of Money and Markets, Dr. Weiss discusses what could happen to investments if the Democrats win the presidency.

Jupiter, Fla. (PRWEB) February 28, 2007 -

Martin Weiss, Ph. D. examines the affects of a Democrat administration on an already falling dollar. In this issue of Money and Markets, Dr. Weiss discusses what could happen to investments if the Democrats win the presidency.

"When overseas investors decide which country to invest in, politics is often more important than economics. They will seek to put their money in the countries that display less political uncertainty. They will look for a well-defined fiscal policy, a positive trade policy and an inviting regulatory policy. Political troubles abroad are already factored into their investment allocations. Political troubles in the U. S. are just beginning to become a factor," says Martin Weiss, Ph. D.

Historically, nearly all presidential candidates pander to their political bases in the early stages of the campaign. Once nominated, they try to convince the rest of the voters that they are not as extreme as they appear. Then, when in office, they often flip-flop again, leaning back toward their political base.

Right now, none among the current crop of leading Democratic contenders is running as a "new Democrat" moderate in the mold of Bill Clinton. They sound more like old Democrats, in the mold of a Lyndon Johnson or Jimmy Carter in office. They want to raise taxes, boost government spending, and strengthen government regulation. Before they follow in the footsteps of a Bill Clinton, they want to reverse the course taken by George Bush.

And this analysis is based on four of the most widely respected business, taxpayer and shareholder organizations in the country: Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), The U. S. Chamber of Commerce, The National Taxpayers Union (NTU), and The American Shareholders Association.

Even if some of these organizations have a partisan tilt, their data and analysis cannot be overlook their. Nor can the likely consequences of a Democrat-controlled government:

Higher taxes: During the Carter Administration, the top federal income tax rate was 70%. During the Bill Clinton Administration, the top rate went from 31% to 39% -- where it has remained ever since.

More regulation: According to a report by the Small Business Administration, the burden that government regulation puts on the economy has already reached $1.1 trillion in 2004 -- or $10,172 per American household. In a democrat-controlled government, expect even more. Result: Businesses are leaving the country for friendlier, less Big Brother-like shores -- or not coming here in the first place.

More government spending: On February 6, President Bush submitted his new $2.9 trillion budget to Congress, and Democrat leaders immediately denounced it for spending too much on Iraq and not enough on key social programs.

A week earlier, House leaders approved a $463 billion spending plan for the remainder of the fiscal year that froze some federal agencies at 2006 levels. But they included increased spending for veterans' health, education, scientific research, HIV programs and public parks, among other things.

Even bigger deficits: The structural deficits created by government entitlement programs -- Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid -- will create massive new deficits in the future, regardless of which party is in control. Meanwhile, many Democrats have pledged not only to ensure no cuts or means-testing are introduced in these programs, but also to expand them and create new entitlements. That's why spending on entitlement programs is increasing rapidly -- from 40% of total government expenditures today to an expected 80% by 2030.

Higher U. S. inflation: Over the past 50 years, which political party controls the White House has generally made little difference in the ups and downs of inflation. The big, outstanding exception: The Carter years. That's when the inflation rate hit a postwar high of 13.5%. And that's when the U. S. dollar was in the gravest long-term danger. Even a modest slant in that direction can only hasten the decline in the dollar... drive more investors to pull out of the U. S. ... and give foreign stock markets an even greater advantage over ours.

"It's still OK to keep a reserve of cash in U. S. Treasury bills. But continue to reinforce holdings in investments designed to rise with the dollar's decline -- based on gold, natural resources and the best-performing foreign stock markets," advises Dr. Weiss.

Exactly How Toxic Are Household Cleaners?

Exactly How Toxic Are Household Cleaners?

The amount of Natural Cleaners sold in Supermarkets is increasing? There is a reason the Name Brand Cleaners are switching to Natural Cleaners? The amount of toxic Household cleaners is unreal.

Rapid City SD (PRWEB) July 20, 2007

The number of Natural Cleaners sold in supermarkets these days is increasing. Do you wonder why natural cleaners are outselling name brands? Is there something we are not being told about all those commercial household cleaners that accumulate under the kitchen sink?

According to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (2007),
"The average American uses 25 gallons of toxic and hazardous chemicals in their home per year. Of the 17,000 chemicals found in household cleaners, only 3 out of 10 have been tested for their effects on human health." (MDEQ, 2007).

Many cleaners contain petroleum based products, which are slow to breakdown in the environment, non-renewable and can contaminate our air and water. Of these chemicals, many are flushed down system and make their way through our sewers to our creeks, rivers, and ultimately our ocean.  According to the EPA (1995), "the air we breathe inside our homes could be as much as 5 times more polluted than the air we breathe outside." (EPA 1995).

Exactly what type of chemicals are we using in our home? Commercial Spot Cleaners can be loaded with carcinogenic ingredients, neurotoxins, central nervous system depressants, and all of these are considered hazardous waste. Sodium Fluosilicate, Na2SiF6 (A poisonous, white, amorphous powder; slightly soluble in water, and used to fluoridate drinking water and to kill rodents and insects) is commonly used in some commercial laundry detergents. Furniture Polishes can contain neurotoxins and other hazards to the environment. A close investigation in household cleaners, commercial oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and metal polishes reveals a vast amount of chemicals that are used as pesticides and even fuel. The more one comes in contact with these toxic cleaners the more one is at risk. Is it any wonder that "occupational dermatitis" is the foremost source of work-related disease?

According to the information in the Encyclopedia of Medicine (2007), Americans spend as much as $300 million a year in their quest for treatments for contact dermatitis. Florists, domestic workers, hairdressers, food preparers, janitors, and employees in industrial, construction, and health care are the people most at risk of contracting work-related contact dermatitis.

Common cleaning products could be more dangerous than germs are. Often we forget that our largest body organ, our skin, absorbs everything it contacts.

Chemicals that you are exposed to can be detected within a minute in all organs of the body. Many "cleaners" release their toxins as fumes which you then breathe in. Mothers that breast-feed should be very cautious around household cleaners since many chemicals, like chlorinated products, can form orgono-chloride compounds that accumulate in fat cells and end up in breast milk. Ask any parent how much contact a baby has with the rugs and floors in their home/day-care area, then consider the chemicals found in rug cleaners and spot removers on those same floors, and an awareness warranting caution emerges. We need to make our homes safe and eliminate all of the toxins we use in it.

The good news is that the public is becoming more aware of the toxic chemicals in commercial cleaners, and many consumers are switching to all-natural, non-toxic products.

The alternatives to harsh chemicals are finding their way onto the shelves of our supermarkets, and the consumer now has a choice between harsh commercial cleaners and these alternative products. The cost is usually less than the toxic cleaners on the shelves of super markets. The natural products usually cost less than commercial cleaners, so you are not only saving money, but protecting the environment, netting an A plus in personal health management, and gaining the sure knowledge that your home is free of toxins released by commercial cleaners.

If you would like to learn more about the chemicals in laundry soap and cleaners currently used in your home, simply go online and do a search about the products you currently use.

The lecture by Dr. Mackie is hosted by BC Epilepsy as part of its 'Speaking of Epilepsy' Summer Lecture Series 2003. BC Epilepsy is a non-profit society founded in 1959 to provide resources, support, programs and services to people in BC living with epilepsy. “BC Epilepsy is very much a community-driven organization,” says Pam Gill, Acting Executive Director, “and in the last four years our members have emphasized the need for education to demystify epilepsy as well as the desire to connect with other people living with epilepsy.”

In response, BC Epilepsy has developed new programming and service initiatives such as Partners in Teaching, which will deliver epilepsy awareness workshops to 457 elementary schools by December, and the 'Speaking of Epilepsy' Summer Lecture Series 2003. This series will educate both the public and people with epilepsy on the range of healthcare and lifestyle choices available to people living with epilepsy.
